Medusahead is an introduced, winter-annual grass covering millions of hectares of the semiarid West. It forms exclusive stands and has a dense thatch cover that resists the establishment of desirable species. Prescribed fire can remove medusahead litter and improve plant establishment. Medusahead control is fundamental to establishing desirable species that will, in turn, resist further invasion. Imazapic is an effective herbicide for control of medusahead, but more information is needed on its effects on desirable species. Our objectives were to test how imazapic application rate and timing affected medusahead, seeded desirable species, and other nontarget vegetation on burned and unburned rangeland in southeast Oregon. We burned existing medusahead infestations at two different sites in June 2003. Following the burn, imazapic was applied at rates of 0, 35, 70, 105, 140, 175, and 210 g ai/ha between July and October of 2003 in a randomized strip-plot design. In November 2003, monocultures of seven desirable species were drill-seeded across the imazapic treated areas. Data on cover and density of medusahead and seeded species were collected in 2004 and 2005. Cover data of nontarget species were collected in the summer of 2005. Medusahead cover was highest in control plots and lowest in plots that received the highest herbicide application rates. Medusahead cover was lower in burned plots. The effect of imazapic on nontarget vegetation was less clear. Seeded species established in the study plots, but their response to herbicide rate showed few consistent patterns; some of the seeded species showed little response to herbicide, whereas others appeared to establish best at different herbicide rates, depending on site and whether the plots were burned or unburned. Site and burn treatment also affected how imazapic rate or application month influenced cover of perennial or annual grasses or forbs.

Field research was conducted during 3 yr to evaluate response of rice and corn to simulated drift rates representing 12.5, 6.3, 3.2, 1.6, and 0.8% of the usage rates of 1,120 g ai/ha glyphosate (140, 70, 35, 18, and 9 g/ha, respectively) and 420 g ai/ha glufosinate (53, 26, 13, and 4 g/ha, respectively). Early-postemergence applications were made to two- to three-leaf rice and six-leaf corn, and late-postemergence applications to rice at panicle differentiation and to corn at nine-leaf stage (1 wk before tasseling). Crop injury was generally greater for the two highest rates of both herbicides when applied early. Little to no reduction in rice or corn height was observed with glufosinate. Glyphosate consistently reduced rice plant height when the two highest rates were applied early, and heading was delayed 2 to 5 d. In 2 of 3 yr, the highest rate of glyphosate reduced rice yield 99 and 67% when applied early and 54 and 29% when applied late. Germination of rice seeds from glyphosate-treated plants was reduced in 1 of 2 yr and for only the highest rate. For glufosinate, rice yield was reduced 30% and in only one year when applied late at the highest rate. Early application of glyphosate reduced corn yield an average of 22 to 78% for the three highest rates, but only for the highest rate at the late timing (33%). Corn yield was reduced an average of 13 and 11% for the highest rate of glufosinate at the early and late timings, respectively. In greenhouse studies, five rice varieties were equally sensitive, as were five corn varieties, to reduced rates of glyphosate and glufosinate.

In fall 2011, cotton and soybean consultants from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee were surveyed through direct mail and on-farm visits, and rice consultants from Arkansas and Mississippi were surveyed through direct mail to assess the importance and level of implementation of herbicide resistance best management practices (HR-BMPs) for herbicide-resistant weeds. Proper herbicide timing, clean start with no weeds at planting, application of multiple effective herbicide modes of action, use of full labeled herbicide rates, and prevention of crop weed seed production with importance rating of ≥ 4.6 out of 5.0 were perceived as the most important HR-BMPs in all crops. Purchase of certified rice seed was on 90% of scouted hectares. In contrast, least important HR-BMPs as perceived by consultants with importance ratings of ≤ 4.0 in cotton, ≤ 3.7 in rice, and ≤ 3.8 in soybean were cultural practices such as manual removal of weeds; tillage including disking, cultivation, or deep tillage; narrow (≤ 50 cm)-row crops, cover crops, and altered planting dates. Narrow crop rows and cover crops in cotton; altered planting dates in cotton and soybean; and cleaning of farm equipment and manual weeding in rice and soybean is currently employed on ≤ 20% of scouted hectares. Extra costs, time constraints, adverse weather conditions, lack of labor and equipment, profitability, herbicide-related concerns, and complacency were perceived as key obstacles for adoption of most HR-BMPs. With limited adoption of most cultural practices that reduce risks of herbicide-resistant weeds, there are opportunities to educate growers concerning the proactive need and long-term benefits of adopting HR-BMPs to ensure sustainable weed management and profitable crop production.

The cause of differential susceptibility of barnyardgrass, hemp sesbania, pitted morningglory, and prickly sida to glyphosate was examined by measuring the absorption of 14C-glyphosate, quantifying the amount of epicuticular wax, and observing the wettability of leaf surfaces. In greenhouse experiments, the biomass of barnyardgrass and prickly sida was reduced by 95% by Roundup Ultra®. Hemp sesbania and pitted morningglory showed more tolerance, with 66 and 51% average biomass reduction, respectively. Absorption of 14C-glyphosate in a controlled environment did not follow the trend in species susceptibility with barnyardgrass, 30%; prickly sida, 18%; hemp sesbania, 52%; and pitted morningglory, 6%; absorption. The high tolerance of pitted morningglory to glyphosate can be attributed mostly to limited absorption, but the tolerance of hemp sesbania is due to other mechanisms. The addition of nonionic surfactant (NIS) to a low rate of Roundup Ultra® reduced absorption of 14C-glyphosate by barnyardgrass and hemp sesbania, but had no effect on the herbicidal activity. Glyphosate absorption in the four weed species was not correlated with quantity of chloroform-extracted wax or leaf wettability. Pitted morningglory and prickly sida, which contained the least leaf wax, also had smaller contact angles or higher leaf wettability than the species with more waxy leaves. The adjuvant in Roundup Ultra® reduced contact angles of the four species compared to contact angles obtained using deionized water alone. The addition of 0.25% v/v NIS alone to water reduced contact angles more than did the adjuvant in Roundup Ultra® solution.

Propanil-resistant barnyardgrass was reported in Poinsett County, AR, in 1990. Greenhouse studies were initiated to determine the distribution of propanil-resistant barnyardgrass in the state and to characterize the resistance. Barnyardgrass seeds were obtained in 1991 and 1992 from fields in 19 of the 38 rice producing counties in Arkansas where propanil treatment at recommended rates gave unsatisfactory barnyardgrass control. Barnyardgrass seedlings from the various sources were treated with propanil at 4.5 kg ai/ha and seedling injury response was compared to the response of seedlings collected from known resistant and susceptible barnyardgrass populations. Propanil-resistance of varying levels was confirmed in 115 (16 counties) out of the 138 Arkansas barnyardgrass seed sources. Propanil I50 values (rate of herbicide required to provide 50% injury/control) were determined to be 14, 20, and 39 kg/ha for slightly, moderately, and highly resistant barnyardgrass, respectively. A resistance factor of 20® was found in the highly resistant barnyardgrass category. Development of resistance was highly correlated with crop rotations where rice was grown one out of two, or two out of three years.

The fate of imazamox, imazethapyr, and imazaquin in soil was evaluated at various soil moisture levels and at soil pH levels of 5 and 7. The percentage of each herbicide sorbed, desorbed, dissipated, and metabolized over time was compared. Soil was kept at its field pH (pH 7) or modified to a lower pH (pH 5) and equilibrated to field moisture contents ranging from 0.27 to 0.21 g water/ g soil, at and below the field capacity of the soil. Soil moisture in the range studied did not affect the fate of the herbicides. The percentage of applied herbicide found in soil solution was greatest for imazamox and least for imazaquin (imazamox > imazethapyr > imazaquin) and was greater at pH 7 than at pH 5 for all three herbicides. Over time, less herbicide was in the soil solution and less was desorbed. Metabolism followed the same pattern. Among the herbicides, metabolism followed the following sequence, imazamox > imazethapyr > imazaquin with metabolism greater at pH 7 than at pH 5 for all three herbicides. At pH 7, the half-life for imazamox was 1.4 wk and for imazethapyr was 16 wk, and the estimated half-life for imazaquin was 191 wk.

Weed management systems were compared in bromoxynil-resistant, glyphosate-resistant, and nontransgenic cotton. A standard system of pendimethalin preplant incorporated (PPI), fluometuron preemergence (PRE), fluometuron plus MSMA early postemergence-directed (POST-DIR), and cyanazine plus MSMA late POST-DIR in combination with cultivation controlled broadleaf signalgrass, large crabgrass, common lambsquarters, jimsonweed, pitted morningglory, prickly sida, sicklepod, and smooth pigweed 98 to 100% late season. Weed control, cotton yield, and net returns were similar when pyrithiobac or bromoxynil plus MSMA postemergence (POST) replaced fluometuron plus MSMA POST-DIR. Fluometuron PRE had little to no effect in bromoxynil systems. Glyphosate POST to three- to four-leaf-stage cotton followed by cyanazine plus MSMA late POST-DIR and cultivation controlled weeds 96 to 100%. Glyphosate POST followed by glyphosate POST-DIR and cultivation controlled pitted morningglory and large crabgrass 89 to 90% and other species at least 94%. Yields and net returns at one location were similar for glyphosate applied twice or glyphosate POST followed by cyanazine plus MSMA POST-DIR and the standard system. Pendimethalin plus fluometuron in glyphosate systems did not increase yield or net returns. At a location severely infested with large crabgrass, pendimethalin plus fluometuron in glyphosate systems increased yield 37 to 44% and net returns 85 to 108%, respectively, when glyphosate was applied to cotton at the three-to four-leaf stage, but not if glyphosate was applied to cotton at the one-leaf stage. Yield and net returns were similar when bromoxynil-resistant, glyphosate-resistant, and nontransgenic cotton were treated using the standard system.

The allelopathic potential of wild radish was evaluated in controlled environments by determining if an aqueous extract from oven-dried wild radish shoots suppressed germination and radicle growth of some crops and weeds common to the southeastern United States. In addition, phytotoxicity from topical applications of the aqueous extract was assessed, along with crop and weed suppression by soil incorporated, air-dried wild radish residues. Germination and radicle growth of all species were reduced by the extract compared with distilled water. However, topical applications of the aqueous extract failed to induce injury on any species by 7 d after treatment. Emergence and shoot fresh weight of the bioassay plants were reduced by wild radish residue incorporated into soil, with the level of suppression dependent on the quantity of residue incorporated. Sicklepod and prickly sida were extremely sensitive to incorporated wild radish residues, with > 95% fresh weight reduction at 0.5% (wt/wt) residue, compared with an untreated control. Conversely, yellow nutsedge showed a high degree of tolerance in all trials. Of the crops evaluated, cotton emergence and growth were most sensitive to incorporated wild radish residues. These data indicate that wild radish aqueous extract or incorporated residues (or both) suppress seed germination, radicle growth, seedling emergence, and seedling growth of certain crops and weeds and these responses are attributed to an allelochemical effect.

A synthetic data set was created by incorporating results from previously published papers on antagonistic and synergistic herbicide interactions between two herbicides applied as a tank mixture or sequentially, and then analyzed on the basis of various properties of the herbicides and target plants. Generally, interactions between herbicides were antagonistic more frequently than synergistic. This trend held no matter whether the interacting herbicides were absorbed by the same or different parts of the plant, had the same or different translocating abilities, had the same or different modes of action, and regardless of whether the target plants were annual or perennial plants, or crops or weeds. Antagonistic interactions occurred much more frequently when the target plants were monocot than dicot, and in the Compositae, Gramineae, or Leguminosae than in the Chenopodiaceae or Convolvulaceae families.

HWSC systems that target weed seed production during harvest have been in use in Australian crop production systems for over 30 years. Until recently, though, grower adoption of these systems has been relatively low. It is now apparent with the introduction of a range of new weed seed targeting systems that there is renewed grower interest in the use of this approach to weed control. With the aim of determining the current adoption and use of HWSC systems, 600 crop producers from throughout Australia’s cropping regions were interviewed on their adoption and use of these systems. This survey established that 43% of Australian growers are now routinely using HWSC to target weed seed production during grain harvest. The adoption of narrow-windrow burning (30%) was considerably greater than the other currently available techniques of chaff tramlining (7%), chaff carts (3%), bale-direct system (3%), and the Harrington Seed Destructor (HSD) (<1%). When growers were asked about their future use of these systems 82% indicated that they would be using some form of HWSC within five years. Grower preferences for future HWSC use were primarily for either narrow-windrow burning (42%) or the HSD (29%). This very high level of current and potential HWSC adoption signifies that HWSC is now considered an established weed control practice by Australian growers.

A theoretical model was developed to assess the relative importance of weed competition and seed dispersal in determining long-term crop yield reductions imposed by weeds. Weed seed dispersal by cultivation, natural means, and harvest machines was incorporated into a weed and crop population model. Model simulations were conducted with green foxtail and spring wheat demographic data from the literature. Simulations indicated that seed dispersal from a weed species invading a field may have a more important influence on crop yield than the relative competitive ability of the weed with respect to the crop. However, if a weed species has a uniform or a high frequency random distribution, there is less difference in the relative importance of dispersal versus competitive ability in determining crop yield reductions. Harvest machines may be an important mechanism for dispersing weed seeds that are harvested with the crop. The practical implication is to make harvesters weed seed ‘predators’ rather than dispersal agents and thereby reduce herbicide and mechanical weed control inputs.

Field research was conducted for a period of 2 yr to evaluate the response of soybean and cotton to simulated drift rates representing 12.5, 6.3, 3.2, 1.6, and 0.8% of the usage rates of 1,120 g ai/ha glyphosate (140, 70, 35, 18, and 9 g/ha, respectively) and 420 g ai/ha glufosinate (53, 26, 13, 7, and 4 g/ha, respectively). Early-postemergence applications were made to 2- to 3-trifoliate soybean and 2- to 3-leaf cotton, and late applications to soybean at first flower and cotton at early bloom. A mid-postemergence application was also made to cotton at pinhead square (first flower bud development). Soybean and cotton injury and height reductions occurred in most cases for only the two highest rates of the herbicides with variation noted between years. Soybean height was reduced by no more than 11%, regardless of herbicide rate or timing. On the basis of visual injury, soybean was more sensitive to glyphosate than to glufosinate when applied early in 1998, but sensitivity was equal for both the herbicides in 1999. When herbicides were applied late, soybean was more sensitive to glufosinate in the first year. Cotton was more sensitive to glufosinate 7 d after application in both years, regardless of timing, but by 28 d differences between herbicides were less apparent. Cotton maturity was not delayed by either herbicide, on the basis of days to first square or flower and nodes above white flower. Both crops were able to recover rapidly from herbicide injury, and yields were not affected negatively.

Laboratory studies were conducted using a Malvern laser droplet/particle size analyzer to determine the droplet spectra of several venturi-type drift reduction nozzles compared to a standard single, elliptical-orifice flat fan nozzle. Spray solutions of glufosinate, glyphosate, and paraquat were applied through all combinations of five nozzle types (four drift reduction), three tip sizes, and four application pressures. Nozzles were also evaluated for pattern uniformity using water plus surfactant at one pressure. When averaged over herbicide, tip size, and pressure the venturi nozzles collectively produced larger volume median diameter (VMD) droplets than the standard nozzle. The percentage of spray volume in droplets < 205 μm was less for the venturi nozzles (17%) than for the standard nozzle (65%) when averaged across all factors. The order of herbicides producing the largest droplets was paraquat (470 μm) > glyphosate (460 μm) > glufosinate (400 μm), as measured by VMD. The venturi nozzles were more variable in their spray volume distribution than the standard nozzle. Utilization of venturi-type nozzles may minimize the drift potential of the herbicides evaluated but could also lead to uneven herbicide application and subsequent erratic weed control.

Field studies were conducted at Fayetteville, Arkansas, to determine whether 47 Palmer amaranth accessions from different areas of the southern United States varied in response to postemergence applications of the registered rates of the isopropylamine salt of glyphosate (840 g ae/ha), fomesafen (420 g ai/ha), and pyrithiobac (70 g ai/ha). Glyphosate controlled all Palmer amaranth accessions at least 99% 21 d after treatment (DAT). Palmer amaranth control with fomesafen was equivalent for all accessions and at least 96% 21 DAT. Percent dry weight reductions were at least 92 and 94% for glyphosate and fomesafen, respectively. Palmer amaranth control with pyrithiobac was variable and ranged from 20 to 94% 21 DAT, but differences could not be attributed to accession origin. Herbicides with alternate modes of action from pyrithiobac should be utilized for Palmer amaranth control in regions where pyrithiobac has been used continuously.

Palmer amaranth is the most problematic weed in agronomic crop production fields in the United States. A Palmer amaranth biotype was not controlled with sequential applications of glyphosate in glyphosate-resistant (GR) soybean production field in south-central Nebraska. The seeds of the putative GR Palmer amaranth biotype were collected in the fall of 2015. The objectives of this study were to (1) confirm GR Palmer amaranth and determine the level of resistance in a whole-plant dose-response bioassay, (2) determine the copy number of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSPS) gene, the molecular target of glyphosate, and (3) evaluate the response of GR Palmer amaranth biotype to POST corn and soybean herbicides with different modes-of-action. Based on the effective dose required to control 90% of plants (ED90), the putative GR Palmer amaranth biotype was 37- to 40-fold resistant to glyphosate depending on the glyphosate-susceptible (GS) used as a baseline population. EPSPS gene amplification was present in the GR Palmer amaranth biotype with up to 32 to 105 EPSPS copies compared to the known GS biotypes. Response of GR Palmer amaranth to POST corn and soybean herbicides suggest reduced sensitivity to atrazine, hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)- (mesotrione, tembotrione, and topramezone), acetolactate synthase (ALS)- (halosulfuron-methyl), and protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)- (carfentrazone and lactofen) inhibitors. GR Palmer amaranth was effectively controlled (>90%) with glufosinate applied at 593 g ai ha−1 with ≥95% reduction in biomass. More research is needed to determine whether this biotype exhibits multiple resistant to other group of herbicides and evaluate herbicide programs for effective management in corn and soybean.

Sulfonylurea herbicide resistance was crossed into a susceptible (S) prickly lettuce biotype and into ‘Bibb’ (B), a domestic lettuce cultivar, and inheritance of the resistance trait was determined. The best fit for Chi Square analysis of the metsulfuron treated F2 generations was a 1:2:1 ratio indicating the trait was controlled by a single nuclear gene with incomplete dominance. F3 generations also were treated with metsulfuron. The F3 seedlings from resistant F2 plants were resistant while the F3 seedlings from intermediate F2 plants segregated.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the interactions of tank-mix combinations of sethoxydim plus the sodium salt of bentazon, the sodium salt of acifluorfen, fomesafen, imazaquin, or the ethyl ester of chlorimuron. Antagonistic interactions were observed with tank-mixes of sethoxydim plus bentazon, imazaquin, or chlorimuron applied for fall panicum, large crabgrass, and goosegrass control in field experiments. Antagonism was observed in greenhouse experiments with tank-mixes of sethoxydim plus bentazon or imazaquin applied to goosegrass. Bentazon, acifluorfen, and fomesafen reduced 14C-sethoxydim uptake by large crabgrass. However, imazaquin and chlorimuron did not affect 14C-sethoxydim uptake. In field experiments, no interactions occurred with tank-mixes of sethoxydim plus any of the broadleaf weed control herbicides applied to entireleaf or tall morningglory.

Long term weed management programs for annual weeds should take into account seed production as well as yield losses from weeds. In this research economic optimum thresholds, determined with a simulation model, were compared to the economic thresholds derived from field studies with common sunflower and velvetleaf in soybean. An economic optimum threshold model, including a biological submodel and a submodel evaluating the financial benefit from controlling each weed species in soybean, was constructed to estimate the biological events and processes and economic costs of each weed. Long-term weed management programs were simulated in continuous soybean over a 15-yr period. The model optimized a POST treatment of bentazon by computing costs associated with weed interference and changes in estimated seedbank size. The economic optimum threshold populations were estimated to be 0.3 to 0.4 velvetleaf plants per 10 m2 and 0.4 common sunflower plants per 10 m2. The economic thresholds calculated to be 2.6 velvetleaf plants per 10 m2 and 1.5 common sunflower plants per 10 m2. The economic optimum threshold was calculated to be 7.5-fold and 3.6-fold lower than the economic thresholds for velvetleaf and common sunflower, respectively. The larger ratio for velvetleaf reflected the large quantity and longevity of seeds produced. The smaller ratio for common sunflower reflected the shorter persistence of the seeds and higher seed predation rates.

Herbicide-resistant crops, such as glyphosate-resistant (GR) soybean, allow for broad-spectrum, flexible weed control with minimal crop injury; however, the development of GR weeds, such as horseweed, has forced reliance on alternative herbicides for control of these weeds. While preplant (PP) herbicides provide excellent control of GR-horseweed, there are currently no POST herbicide control options within soybean. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of dicamba for the control of GR-horseweed when applied PP, POST, and sequentially in dicamba-resistant soybean. Dicamba applied PP at 600 g a.e. ha−1 provided 90 to 100% control of GR-horseweed 8 wk after application (WAA) across three field trials conducted in Ontario in 2011 and 2012. Similarly, sequential applications provided 91 to 100% control. This technology provides a much-needed POST option of dicamba to be applied as a rescue treatment to control weed escapes caused by late emergence or poor initial control following a PP herbicide application.

Soybean producers of South Carolina were surveyed in 2000 through mail and on-farm visits to determine which production practices limit seed yields the most. Production systems have direct implications on weed management practices, difficulties, and future problems. When asked to describe two extension and research focus areas that would improve current soybean production, the number one response was improved weed control strategies. Fifty-seven percent of the respondents indicated that weeds were the pest that most limited soybean yield. Sicklepod, Palmer amaranth, morningglory species, common cocklebur, yellow nutsedge, and Texas panicum were considered the most problematic weeds. More than half the producers (68%) used glyphosate-resistant soybean, with one-half of these farmers producing soybean in row widths > 51 cm. Of the farmers who grew conventional soybean, 10% used narrow rows (≤ 51 cm), whereas 22% used wide rows (> 51 cm). Only 27% of the farmers who planted glyphosate-resistant soybean used a soil-applied herbicide. Forty-three percent of farmers based the need for a postemergence herbicide on weed size, 21% used no repeatable method, 21% relied on days after soybean emergence, 11% depended on soybean size or groundcover, and only 4% used a combination of weed density and size. Thirty-five percent of the farmers did not rotate soybean with another crop. In fields where soybean parasitic nematodes reduced soybean growth or caused plant death, late-season weed infestations were often exacerbated, especially in the absence of nonresidual herbicides. Specific reasons for difficulty in managing weeds in soybean may include a diverse weed spectrum, which is difficult to control with a single herbicide, the use of wide-row soybean, the lack of crop rotation, the prevalence of nematodes that directly affect crop development and, in turn, weed management, the lack of an appropriate criterion for timing postemergence herbicide applications, and the greater attention paid to production of more valuable crops. Educational efforts addressing weed management problems and association of such problems with other production practices are needed if weed management is to be improved and weed-induced yield losses minimized.
