We consider the formally self-adjoint 2mth-order elliptic differential operator in ℝn given by where lt is an operator of order t, and pt ≧0 for t ≧1 and establish conditions under which the operator on is essentially self-adjoint in L2. A feature is that the major conditions (including the positivity of the coefficients) have to be imposed only in an increasing sequence of annular regions surrounding the origin.

We construct multi-bump nodal solutions of the elliptic equation

in , when μ is large, under appropriate assumptions, for f superlinear and subcritical and such that the eigenvalues of the associated linearized operator on at zero, u ↦ u − λ(−Δ)−1(a+u), are positive. The solutions are of least energy in some Nehari-type set defined by imposing suitable conditions on orthogonal components of functions in .

We show that if L is a bounded (semi-)lattice and f is a range-closed idempotent residuated mapping on L then f is multiplicative if and only if it is decreasing. We then use this to prove that a bounded (semi-)lattice is implicative if and only if it can be coordinatised by a weakly multiplicative (right) Baer semigroup.

From the time of Galileo, experiment has been the core of Natural Science. Before him, of course, observation alone had in the development of astronomy played a fundamental part. Besides the great workers of the ancient civilisations, who knew the path of the sun amongst the fixed stars and could predict eclipses, and besides the fruits of Greek astronomy associated with the names of Hipparchus and Ptolemy, the more modern observational work of Tycho Brahe, analysed by Kepler, had vindicated the self-consistency of the Copernican theory of the solar system and had led to its remarkable refinement in the form of Kepler's three quantitative laws—the law of the ellipse, the law of areas, and the law connecting periodic times and major axes. This was a triumphant example of the execution of the programme then being put forward by Francis Bacon for discovering all natural laws—the method of induction from a number of instances. But it was reserved for Galileo to make a start with the process of ascertaining as far as might be, by controlled experiment, the particular nature of motion. The metaphysical questions associated with motion had not escaped the attention of the Greeks; but Zeno was apparently content with stating paradoxes, and did not resolve them. Galileo, first, experimented with moving bodies; and established that in falling they received equal increments of velocity in equal times—a kinematic theorem, like Kepler's laws. Huyghens was perhaps the first person to establish dynamical-theorems; that is to say, to infer a kinematic result from a stated physical principle—as, for example, his proof of the approximate isochromism of the pendulum based on the principle of vis viva, or, as we should now say, the conservation of energy. Huyghens, together with some of the early Restoration men of science in this country, dealt also with the collisions of bodies. The peerless Newton went further. Assuming outright three primitive “laws of motion,” he showed how the results of Galileo, Huyghens, and their contemporaries could be actually deduced; and by the addition of a fourth law, the law of universal gravitation, already conjectured by some thinkers, he arrived at the laws of Kepler as inferences. Not only so, but the four highly general and abstract laws introduced by Newton have been found sufficient to deduce an enormous complex of dynamical theorems, to express their relationships in the subsequent beautiful systems of Lagrange and of Hamilton, and to derive all but every detail in the motions both in the solar system and in distant binary stars. The basic principles laid down by Newton remained unaltered till our own day, when Einstein modified simultaneously the laws of motion, the law of gravitation, and the background of space and time which had been explicitly adopted by Newton as the scene in which his laws were to play their parts.

In this paper, we consider an eigenvalue problem for ordinary differential equations of fourth order with a spectral parameter in the boundary conditions. The location of eigenvalues on real axis, the structure of root subspaces and the oscillation properties of eigenfunctions of this problem are investigated, and asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are found. Next, by the use of these properties, we establish sufficient conditions for subsystems of root functions of the considered problem to form a basis in the space $L_p,1 < p < \infty$.

We approximate functionals depending on the gradient of u and on the behaviour of u near the discontinuity points by families of non-local functionals where the gradient is replaced by finite differences. We prove pointwise convergence, Γ-convergence and a compactness result, which implies, in particular, the convergence of minima and minimizers.

This paper deals with two-point boundary-value problems for ordinary differential equations and the operators which they induce in the appropriate Hilbert space. The problems arenot required to be self-adjoint. No auxiliary condition such as Birkhoff-regularity is imposed. If T is such an operator, it may well have no meaningful spectral structure. It is shown, however, that when T is composed with its adjoint, the result is a non-negative self-adjoint differential operator. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of this composite operator are used to delineate the domain, action, range, and generalised inverse of T.

We show how to deform a metric of the form g = gr + dr2 to a metric = Hr + dr2, which is a hyperbolic metric for r less than some fixed λ, and coincides with g for r large. Here by hyperbolic metric we mean a metric of constant sectional curvature equal to -1. We study the extent to which is close to hyperbolic everywhere, if we assume g is close to hyperbolic. A precise definition of the close to hyperbolic concept is given. We also deal with a one-parameter version of this problem. The results in this paper are used in the problem of smoothing Charney–Davis strict hyperbolizations.

The author presents a modification of the recently discovered “elementary” proof of the Prime Number Theorem. Nothing is assumed from the theory of numbers except the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic. In the second part of the proof the elements of the integral calculus are used to make clearer the basic ideas on which this part depends.

A tubular group G is a finite graph of groups with ℤ2 vertex groups and ℤ edge groups. We characterize residually finite tubular groups: G is residually finite if and only if its edge groups are separable. Methods are provided to determine if G is residually finite. When G has a single vertex group an algorithm is given to determine residual finiteness.

This paper investigates the one-dimensional propagation of weak discontinuities, that is acceleration waves, in a homogeneous and isotropic half-space composed of an arbitrary number of non-linearly hyperelastic layers. The transmission and reflection coefficients are evaluated in terms of the initial condition at the boundary, and the steepening of the waves to form a shock is discussed. The results are specialised to the case of periodic layering.

In this paper we present a classification of a class of globally subanalytic CMC surfaces in ℝ3 that generalizes the recent classification made by Barbosa and do Carmo in 2016. We show that a globally subanalytic CMC surface in ℝ3 with isolated singularities and a suitable condition of local connectedness is a plane or a finite union of round spheres and right circular cylinders touching at the singularities. As a consequence, we obtain that a globally subanalytic CMC surface in ℝ3 that is a topological manifold does not have isolated singularities. It is also proved that a connected closed globally subanalytic CMC surface in ℝ3 with isolated singularities which is locally Lipschitz normally embedded needs to be a plane or a round sphere or a right circular cylinder. A result in the case of non-isolated singularities is also presented. It also presented some results on regularity of semialgebraic sets and, in particular, it proved a real version of Mumford's Theorem on regularity of normal complex analytic surfaces and a result about C1 regularity of minimal varieties.

Using explicit equations for Jacobi vector fields on a Sasakian space form, we characterise such spaces by means of the shape operator of small geodesic spheres.

In this paper, the number of conjugacy classes in a finite group G is analysed in terms of the number of ordered pairs that generate it. Using this relation, we give a new elementary proof of one of A. Mann's results for finite groups, namely: |G| ≡ r(G) (mod. d|G|. δ|G|), where , prime and pi ≠ Pj for every i≠j, r(G) denotes the number of conjugacy classes of elements of G, d|G| = g.c.d. (p1 − 1, … pt − 1) and δ|G| = g.c.d. . The above congruence is obtained without using character theory. We also obtain new local congruences that slightly improve Mann's congruence.

with φ ∈ C(-∞, +∞) and 0≦φ(x)≦C|x|i+1(1+|x|1), −∞<x<+∞ where i and l are arbitrary positive numbers with i≧2k≧2, k integer. In first approximation the eigenvalues λ and λ− and the corresponding eigenfunctions ψ and ψ are the same for ε→0; the error decreases whenever the exponent i increases.

On the 26th of January, about noon, I observed the appearance of a coloured bow on the frozen surface of the ditch which surrounds S. John's College, Cambridge. Its appearance and position seemed to correspond with those of an ordinary primary rainbow. I at once made a rough measurement of the angle on the board of a book which I had with me, and then borrowed from Dr Parkinson, President of S. John's College, a sextant, with which I found that the angle between the bright red and the shadow of the large mirror was 41° 50′, and that for bright blue 40° 30′. The angle for the extreme red of the primary bow, as given in Parkinson's Optics, is 42° 20′, and that for violet 40° 32′. The bows formed by ice crystals are seen on the same side as the sun, and not on the opposite side.

We establish the simplicial triviality of the convolution algebra l1 (S), where S is a band semigroup. This generalizes some results of Choi (Glasgow Math. J. 48 (2006), 231–245; Houston J. Math. 36 (2010), 237–260). To do so, we show that the cyclic cohomology of this algebra vanishes in all odd degrees, and is isomorphic in even degrees to the space of continuous traces on l(S). Crucial to our approach is the use of the structure semilattice of S, and the associated grading of S, together with an inductive normalization procedure in cyclic cohomology. The latter technique appears to be new, and its underlying strategy may be applicable to other convolution algebras of interest.

We generalize the notions of the orbifold Euler characteristic and of the higher-order orbifold Euler characteristics to spaces with actions of a compact Lie group using integration with respect to the Euler characteristic instead of the summation over finite sets. We show that the equation for the generating series of the kth-order orbifold Euler characteristics of the Cartesian products of the space with the wreath products actions proved by Tamanoi for finite group actions and by Farsi and Seaton for compact Lie group actions with finite isotropy subgroups holds in this case as well.

For N = 2, n, k ∈ N, we prove the existence of a smooth potential a : Ω → R such that all sufficiently small k-jets of vector fields on Rn can be realized on the centre manifold of the semilinear parabolic equation by an appropriate nonlinearity f : ( x, s ) ∈ Ω x R ↦ f (x, s ) ∈ R2 ( here, ‘·’ denotes the scalar product in R2).

This note extends the results in ‘Optimal coercivity inequalities in W1,p(Ω)’ (G. Auchmuty, Proc. R. Soc. Edinb. A 135, 915–933.) describing the dependence of the optimal constant in the p-version of Friedrichs' inequality on the boundary integral term. In particular, it is shown that this constant is continuous, increasing, concave and increases to the optimal constant for the Dirichlet problem as s → ∞.
