We prove a Lusin type theorem for a certain class of linear partial differential operators G(D), reducing to [1, Theorem 1] when G(D) is the gradient. Moreover, we describe the structure of the set {G(D)f = F}, under assumptions of non-integrability on F, in terms of lower dimensional rectifiability and superdensity. Applications to Maxwell type system and to multivariable Cauchy–Riemann system are provided.

We answer some questions about the semicontinuity in L∞ and in Lp of functionals defined on W1,n (Ωℝn) as integrals of non-convex functions of the gradient matrix, and we give a conjecture for the general case.

We consider the second order, linear differential equation

in the case where, roughly, q ∊ L1 [0, ∞). We devise a representation for the spectral function, τ(t), associated with (*) which is valid for t sufficiently large. Our results are the best possible.

We investigate maxima and minima of some functionals associated with solutions to Dirichlet problems for elliptic equations. We prove existence results and, under suitable restrictions on the data, we show that any maximal configuration satisfies a special system of two equations. Next, we use the moving-plane method to find symmetry results for solutions of a system. We apply these results in our discussion of symmetry for the maximal configurations of the previous problem.

A uniform asymptotic expansion of the Laplace integrals ℒ(f, s) with explicit remainder terms is given. This expansion is valid in the whole complex s−plane. In particular, for s = −ix, it provides the Fourier integral expansion.

This paper deals with initial value problems in ℝ2 which are governed by a hyperbolic differential equation containing a small positive factor ε in front of the second order part of the differential operator. Pointwise a priori estimates for the solution are established by means of an energy integral method. With the help of these estimates it is shown that the solution admits an asymptotic expansion into powers of ε which is uniformly valid in compact subsets of ℝ2. All results are obtained under the assumption that the characteristics of the first order part of the differential operator satisfy a so-called “timelike” condition. A discussion of the concepts “timelike” and “spacelike” is given.

The paper discusses the nature of the singularities at any finite point t = t0 of real solutions x(t), y(t) of the system of differential equations x′ = P(x, y), y′ = Q(x, y) in which P, Q are polynomials in both x and y. Its main interest is in cases when the leading terms of P, Q are of the same degree n. Conditions are given under which the only possible singularities are algebraic poles and pseudo-poles. Conditions are also given under which the only possible singularities are of wildly oscillatory type.

We derive a stage-structured model for an insect population in which a larva matures on reaching a certain size, and in which there is intra-specific competition among larvae that hinders their development, thereby prolonging the larval phase. The model, a system of delay differential equations for the total numbers of adults and larvae, assumes two forms. One of these is a system with a variable state-dependent time delay determined by a threshold condition, the other has constant and distributed delays, a size-like independent variable replacing time t, and no threshold condition. We prove theorems on boundedness and on the linear stability of equilibria.

Self-shrinkers are an important class of solutions to the mean curvature flow and their generalization is λ-hypersurfaces. In this paper, we study λ-hypersurfaces and give a rigidity result about complete λ-hypersurfaces.

In this paper we investigate three-dimensional complete minimal hypersurfaces with constant Gauss-Kronecker curvature in a space form M4(c) (c ≤ 0). We prove that if the scalar curvature of a such hypersurface is bounded from below, then its Gauss-Kronecker curvature vanishes identically. Examples of complete minimal hypersurfaces which are not totally geodesic in the Euclidean space E4 and the hyperbolic space H4(c) with vanishing Gauss-Kronecker curvature are also presented. It is also proved that totally umbilical hypersurfaces are the only complete hypersurfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature and with zero quasi-Gauss-Kronecker curvature in a space form M4(c) (c ≤ 0) if the scalar curvature is bounded from below. In particular, we classify complete hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and with constant quasi-Gauss-Kronecker curvature in a space form M4(c) (c ≤ 0) if the scalar curvature r satisfies r≥ ⅔c.

Throughout this paper the near-ring N is assumed to be zero symmetric and to satisfy the right distributive law. That is, x · 0 = 0 and (x + y)z = xz + yz for all x, y, z ∈ N. In what follows we generalise the notion of s-primitivity first introduced in an earlier paper by the author (1968), where only distributively generated (d.g.) near-rings with identity were considered. We define a Jacobson type radical Js (N) and show that J1(N)⊇Js(N) ⊇ Q(N), where Q(N) is the intersection of all 0-modular left ideals of N (Pilz). In addition we settle some of the problems remaining from Hartney (1968).

This paper is concerned with the existence of solutions of a general boundary value problem for differential equations with deviating arguments. The results are based on a topological transversality method and rely on a priori bounds on solutions.

Models which treat molecules as graphs provide the first approximation to practically all chemical and physical theories of polymers. This paper, worded so as to aim at intelligibility by both chemists and mathematicians, deals with statistical effects of correlations on distributions of molecules in their graph-like states. The correlations are formally equivalent to fertility correlations in family trees, and the theory covers the range of correlation to the point where a man's fertility expectations depend on how many brothers he has. Chemically, this describes the ‘second shell substitution effect’ which includes certain steric hindrance situations; mathematically, the problem is solved by restoring the Markovian nature of a conventional Galton-Watson process. Long-range correlations are an inevitable and troublesome aspect of the structure of gels and this work represents a step towards improving models for real gels.

The question of “correctness” of cardinal interpolation with shifted three-directional box splines is solved for arbitrary orders of the directional vectors. It is shown that the corresponding symbol can be viewed as a collection of curves with certain properties (convexity, increasing argument, etc.) which are investigated in detail. The method of proof involves an induction argument which is based on properties of the exponential Euler splines (studied in [6]).

The strong* topology s*(X) of a Banach space X is defined as the locally convex topology generated by the seminorms x ↦ ‖Sx‖ for bounded linear maps S from X into Hilbert spaces. The w-right topology for X, ρ(X), is a stronger locally convex topology, which may be analogously characterized by taking reflexive Banach spaces in place of Hilbert spaces. For any Banach space Y , a linear map T : X → Y is known to be weakly compact precisely when T is continuous from the w-right topology to the norm topology of Y. The main results deal with conditions for, and consequences of, the coincidence of these two topologies on norm bounded sets. A large class of Banach spaces, including all C*-algebras and, more generally, all JB*-triples, exhibit this behaviour.

The paper presents solutions, for a class of shear relaxation functions, ofa linear problem formulated by Joseph [8] to elucidate the steady, supercritical flow of a viscoelastic fluid past a semi-infinite flat plate. The velocity (U, 0) at infinity is parallel to the plate, and‘supercritical flow ‘means that U is greater than the propagation speed C of shear waves. As a result, the vorticity satisfies a hyperbolic equation and is confined to the region downstream of a shock wave from the leading edge of the plate. The disturbance velocity fieldextends upstream of the shock and is continuous across it. In contrast to the case of a Newtonian fluid, the solutions are unique under the condition that the functions representing the vorticity on the two sides of the platebelong to a certain Banach space.

We provide a simplified proof of the following well-known theorem. The projection to Rn + 1of an n-dimensional rectifiable Legendrian subset of Rn+1 × Snis C2-rectifiable. Such a result generalizes the following simple fact. Let M be a hypersurface whose Gauss map has graph of class C1. Then M is of class C2.

Baumslag and Wiegold have recently proven that a finite group G is nilpotent if and only if o(xy) = o(x)o(y) for every x, y ∈ G with (o(x), o(y)) = 1. Motivated by this surprisingly new result, we have obtained related results that just consider sets of prime divisors of element orders. For instance, the first of our main results asserts that G is nilpotent if and only if π(o(xy)) = π(o(x)o(y)) for every x, y ∈ G of prime power order with (o(x), o(y)) = 1. As an immediate consequence, we recover the Baumslag–Wiegold Theorem. While this result is still elementary, we also obtain local versions that, for instance, characterize the existence of a normal Sylow p-subgroup in terms of sets of prime divisors of element orders. These results are deeper and our proofs rely on results that depend on the classification of finite simple groups.
