We use the modern tools of the duality principles and the calculus of variations to formulate, analyse and solve a class of plasticity problems involving second order partial derivatives. The Serrin-type integrals can most appropriately facilitate the existence statements for the extrema from either side of the duality relation in a larger class of BV functions, and interpret the solutions with possible discontinuities on sets of measure zero. The exact solutions of a beam and numerical solutions of a circular plate are presented to demonstrate the theoretical conclusions.

It is shown how to associate eigenvectors with a meromorphic mapping defined on a Riemann surface with values in the algebra of bounded operators on a Banach space. This generalises the case of classical spectral theory of a single operator. The consequences of the definition of the eigenvectors are examined in detail. A theorem is obtained which asserts the completeness of the eigenvectors whenever the Riemann surface is compact. Two technical tools are discussed in detail: Cauchy-kernels and Runge's Approximation Theorem for vector-valued functions.

We study a quasilinear degenerately elliptic system involving the operator curl. The leading-order term of the associated energy functional is a q-power of curl of the unknowns. It is interesting to us that the structure of the lower-order terms will play an important role in both the existence and regularity of the solutions. When the lower-order part of the energy functional is convex we obtain weak solutions by minimizing the functional in some suitable spaces of vector fields. When it is concave we obtain critical points of the truncated functional, which are weak solutions of a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. We also examine the interior Hölder regularity of the weak solutions, which indicates that the weak solution is composed of a ‘good’ divergence-free part and a ‘bad’ part in gradient form. The analysis involves local higher integrability and local Hölder gradient estimates for a translated q′-Laplace equation and a translated quasilinear equation with p-growth.

By using a rescaling technique and the Implicit Function Theorem, we establish the global bifurcation diagram. Uniqueness is proved by a separation argument to complete the bifurcation picture of the problem. Our study suggests that the bifurcation diagrams have different behaviour at λ = 0, depending on whether g(∞) > 0 or g(∞) < 0 in L∞ norm, but quite similar behaviour in Lp or W2,1.

We consider a variety of integral representations, single and multiple, old and new, for solutions of the hyper-Bessel equation u(n) – zmu =0. In particular, we show how a very early multiple Laplace integral solution of Molins (1876) may be related to recent Mellin–Barnes integral representations given by the present authors by way of multiple integral solutions given by Saxton and the second author for an associated equation. Although both these multiple integral solutions may be found by elementary methods, it is not easy to find their asymptotic expansions for large z, and we show how these may conveniently be obtained from our earlier results [10].

This paper deals with conditions which guarantee that a meromorphic function on the plane cannot satisfy any algebraic differential equation having coefficients in a given field of meromorphic functions. Some of the conditions are of growth type, while others depend on a representation for the function.

The simultaneous integral equations of Noble and Cooke, for inter alia the Dirichlet problem for an annular disc, are transformed into equations closely analogous to those recently given by Clements and Love for the corresponding Neumann problem. The transformed equations are relatively simple, and do not involve any artificial preliminary dissection of the known functions. They are also uncoupled, and admit iterative solution for virtually all radius ratios.

In the case of the conducting annular disc, iteration of these equations isused to obtain two series for the capacity, an interim one with all terms positive, and a final one with all terms after the first negative. The final series is more rapidly convergent as well as neater. It is used to provide a family of inequalities which enclose the capacity and determine it to high accuracy with very few terms, failing only when the radius ratio is close to 1.

Order-of-magnitude results are extended to the case of general second-order term, with coefficient not necessarily of fixed sign, with general positive weight-function. The bounds are used to establish the expression for the Titchmarsh–Weyl function m(λ) as a Nevanlinna function in terms of the spectral function.

Let N(u, g, h) denote the number of subgroups of index u, genus g and parabolic class number h in the classical modular group. In 1974, Petersson proved that, for g = 0 and h = 1, 2, N(u, g, h) grows exponentially with u. We obtain a formula valid for all g and h. From this we derive an asymptotic estimate, showing that Petersson's result gives the correct type of growth. The proofs use coset diagrams.

In the special case Ω = B(0, R), a disc, the explicit exact solutions of the branch τe have connected cores A and the diameter of A tends to zero when the area of A tends to zero. This result is established here for other convex domains Ω and solutions with connected cores A.

An adaptation of the maximum principles and of the domain folding arguments of Gidas, Ni and Nirenberg [9] is an important step in establishing the above result.

We consider a method for determining the asymptotic solution to a sufficiently wide class of ordinary linear homogeneous differential equations in a sector of a complex plane or of a Riemann surface for large values of the independent variable z. The main restriction of the method is the condition that the coefficients in the equation should be analytic and single-valued functions in the sector for | z | ≫ 1 possessing the power order of growth for |z| → ∞. In particular, the coefficients can be any powerlogarithmic functions. The equation

can be taken as a model equation. Here ai are complex numbers, aij are real numbers (i = 1,2,…, n; j = 0, 1, …, m) and ln1 Z≡ln z, lnsz= lnlnS−1z = S = 2, … It has been shown that the calculation of asymptotic representations for solution to any equation in the class considered may be reduced to the solution of some algebraic equations with constant coefficients by means of a simple and regular procedure. This method of asymptotic integration may be considered as an extension (to equations with variable coefficients) of the well known integration method for linear differential equations with constant coefficients. In this paper, we consider the main case when the set of all roots of the characteristic polynomial possesses the property of asymptotic separability.

This paper deals mainly with showing that meromorphic solutions of Poincaré functional equations cannot satisfy algebraic differential equations. Results of this type for entire solutions have previously been obtained by H. Wittich.

This paper deals with the periodic homogenization of nonlocal parabolic Hamilton–Jacobi equations with superlinear growth in the gradient terms. We show that the problem presents different features depending on the order of the nonlocal operator, giving rise to three different cell problems and effective operators. To prove the locally uniform convergence to the unique solution of the Cauchy problem for the effective equation we need a new comparison principle among viscosity semi-solutions of integrodifferential equations that can be of independent interest.

This paper concerns the homogenization problem for fully nonlinear first-order equations of Hamilton—Jacobi type with a finite number of scales. Under some coercivity and periodicity assumptions we provide an estimate of the rate of convergence. Finally, some examples arising from optimal control and deterministic differential games are discussed.

The relationship of the Lp (Rn) estimate and two endpoint estimates for the multi-linear singular integral operators is considered. Some conditions are given under which one of these estimates implies the others.

A closed curve flow on the 2-sphere evolved by a fourth-order nonlinear dispersive partial differential equation on the one-dimensional flat torus is studied. The governing equation arises in the field of physics in relation to the continuum limit of the Heisenberg spin chain systems or three-dimensional motion of the isolated vortex filament. The main result of the paper gives the local existence and uniqueness of a solution to the initial-value problem by overcoming loss of derivatives in the classical energy method and the absence of the local smoothing effect. The proof is based on the delicate analysis of the lower-order terms to find out the loss of derivatives and on the gauged energy method to eliminate the obstruction.

In this paper we consider a one-dimensional Stefan problem with a source term. Under the assumption that the initial profile is monotone, we obtain continuity of the free boundaries between the solid, the mushy and the liquid region.

We consider a class of semilinear elliptic boundary value problems depending on a parameter, which arise in the theory of combustion. Based on the results in another paper by the same author, a rigorous quantitative connection is shown between the solution set of the boundary value problem and that of a simple scalar equation (the Semenov approximation).
