The axis-rotational evolution of exoplanets on close orbits strongly depends on their magnetic and tidal interactions with the parent stars. Impulsive perturbations from a star created by periodical activity may accumulate with time and lead to significant long-term perturbations of the planet spin evolution. I consider the spin evolution for different conditions of gravitational, magnetic and tidal perturbations, orbit eccentricity and different angles between the planetary orbit plane and the reference frame of a parent star. In this report I present a summary of analytical and numerical calculations of the spin evolution, and discuss the problem of the star-planet magnetic interaction.

Three-millimeter-wavelength spectra of a number of nearby galaxies have been obtained at the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO) using a new, very broadband receiver. This instrument, which we call the Redshift Search Receiver, has an instantaneous bandwidth of 36 GHz and operates from 74 to 110.5 GHz. The receiver has been built at UMass/FCRAO to be part of the initial instrumentation for the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) and is intended primarily for determination of the redshift of distant, dust-obscured galaxies. It is being tested on the FCRAO 14 m by measuring the 3 mm spectra of a number of nearby galaxies. There are interesting differences in the chemistry of these galaxies.

Stereographic projection of Hopf field on the 3-sphere into Euclidean 3-space is used as a model of 3D steady flow of ideal compressible fluid in MHD. In such case, flow lines are Villarceau circles lying on tori corresponding to the levels of Bernoulli function. Existence of an optimal torus with minimal relative surface free energy is shown. Optimal tori are considered as precursors of planetary orbits.

At the 1998 IAU Symposium on the Magellanic Clouds, Dr. Robert Petre observed that we were reaching a time where it was possible “to study the MC SNRs at a level of detail comparable with many Galactic remnants”, while retaining the benefits of a global view in the MCs. Over the past decade, many researchers have taken advantage of these newly accessible populations. New MC-wide surveys at various wavelengths have enabled broader searches for SNR candidates, extending our census of MC SNRs to less prominent objects — older SNRs, SNRs in complex regions, et cetera. The use of light-echoes has provided a new avenue to probe young SNRs. Higher spatial and spectral resolutions in many wavelength regimes have enabled detailed studies of individual remnants, revealing progenitor types, pulsar-wind nebulae, expansion details, and environmental effects.

Perhaps the newest conceptual development is the increasing use of the MC SNRs to study physical problems of wider significance to many fields of astronomy. For example, researchers have examined the energy and hot gas inputs of MC SNRs to the ISM, including their collective effects within superbubbles, in order to evaluate their effects on stellar feedback cycles in a galaxy. Other scientists have investigated the fraction of SNR energies going to the acceleration of cosmic rays, which has significant implications for the role of SNRs in cosmic-ray production. Most recently, the onslaught of Spitzer data has led to new exploration of dust in MC SNRs, allowing us to probe dust creation, depletion, and destruction in the MC SNR populations. In summary, the study of SNRs in the MCs appears to have “come of age” over the past decade, becoming a mature field with rich potential for future scientific work.

Galactic cosmic rays (GCR) provide information on the solar neighborhood during the sun's motion in the galaxy. There is now considerable evidence for GCR acceleration by shock waves of supernova in active star-forming regions (OB associations) in the galactic spiral arms. During times of passage into star-forming regions increases in the GCR-flux are expected. Recent data from the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) are shedding light on the structure of the Milky Way and of its star-forming-regions in spiral arms. Records of flux variations may be found in solar system detectors, and iron meteorites with GCR-exposure times of several hundred million years have long been considered to be potential detectors (Voshage, 1962). Variable concentration ratios of GCR-produced stable and radioactive nuclides, with varying half-lives and therefore integration times, were reported by Lavielle et al. (1999), indicating a recent 38% GCR-flux increase. Potential flux recorders consisting of different pairs of nuclides can measure average fluxes over different time scales (Lavielle et al., 2007; Mathew and Marti, 2008). Specific characteristics of two pairs of recorders (81Kr-Kr and 129I-129Xe) are the properties of self-correction for GCR-shielding (flux variability within meteorites of varying sizes). The 81Kr-Kr method (Marti, 1967) is based on Kr isotope ratios, while stable 129Xe is the decay product of the radionuclide 129I, which is produced by secondary neutron reactions on Te in troilites of iron meteorites. The two chronometers provide records of the average GCR flux over 1 and 100 million year time scales, respectively.

Gaia development is in full speed aiming to the launch in December 2011. While the entities formally responsible to make Gaia happen are very focused to be ready in time, it is necessary to explore the readiness of the wider scientific community to exploit Gaia data in the future. The GST sees a role for itself in building and enabling the community to use the Gaia catalogues when they become available. This paper gives the background for the current activities the GST is taking to promote the community to start preparations for the exploitation of Gaia data.

During the period the Working Group had proposed and was granted renewed status by Division XI Space and High-Energy Astrophysics. Additionally the Working Group requested to be extended to Division IX Optical and Infrared Techniques, Division X Radio Astronomy, as well as Division XI.

We present an analysis of the HD planetary system based on a photometric transit dataset and radial velocities obtained on 3 December 2007. We also present limits on the presence of close stellar companions based on high resolution images.

The chemical abundances of the very metal poor double-enhanced stars are excellent information to set new constraints on models of neutron-capture processes at low metallicity. There have been many theoretical studies of s-process nucleosynthesis in low-mass AGB stars. Using the parametric approach based on the radiative s-process nucleosynthesis model, we calculate the following five parameters for a series of metal-poor stars. They are: the mass fraction of 13C pocket q, the overlap factor r, the neutron exposure per interpulse Δτ, and the component coefficients that correspond to relative contribution from the s-process and the r-process. We find that the mass fraction of 13C pocket q deduced for the Pb stars is comparable to the overlap factor r, which is about 10 times larger than normal AGB model; q ~ 0.05; and the neutron exposure per interpulse Δτ for all Pb stars are about 10 times smaller than the ST case (Δτ ~ 7.0mb−1). Although the two fundamental parameters Δτ and q obtained for the Pb stars are very different from the AGB stellar model, the results of the larger value of q and the smaller value of Δτ can also explain the abundance distribution of the Pb stars. This suggest that the q change to larger than that of normal AGB model. Then, this factor will result in the descent of the density of 13C in the nuclear synthesis region directly. So, the neutron exposure Δτ will also decrease to the same extent. Although the neutron number density in the larger initial mass AGB stars (m > 3M⊙) is high, the neutron irradiation time is shorter, obviously the neutron exposure per interpulse in the AGB stars should be smaller. It is noteworthy that the total amount of 13C in metal poor condition is close to the ST case, which is consistent with the primary nature of the neutron source.

From recent high-accuracy transit timings measurements, we discard the 5 M⊕ planet recently proposed by Ribas et al. (2008). Thanks to a combined radial-velocity and transit timings overview we also define a mass/period domain in which a secondary planet may be found in the system. We also show that timings obtained until now, although not sufficient to remove degeneracies on mass and period, can still restrict the parameter space of the potential secondary planet.

Our model generalizes the differential D(E) and integral D(>E) spectra of cosmic rays (CR) during the 11-year solar cycle. The empirical model takes into account galactic (GCR) and anomalous cosmic rays (ACR) heliospheric modulation by four coefficients. The calculated integral spectra in the outer planets are on the basis of mean gradients: for GCR – 3%/AU and 7%/AU for anomalous protons. The obtained integral proton spectra are compared with experimental data, the CRÈME96 model for the Earth and theoretical results of 2D stochastic model. The proposed analytical model gives practical possibility for investigation of experimental data from measurements of galactic cosmic rays and their anomalous component.

We are studying the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) in the inner few degrees around the Galactic Centre, by mapping multiple 3-mm molecular lines, with the 22-m Mopra telescope. During 2006, we covered a 5 × 5 arcmin2 area of the Sagittarius B2 molecular cloud complex (Jones et al. 2008). We find substantial differences in chemical and physical conditions within the complex. We show some results here of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of line features in this Sgr B2 area. During 2007 we covered the larger region of longitude −0.2 to 0.9 deg. and latitude -0.20 to 0.12 deg., including Sgr A and Sgr B2, in the frequency range 85.3 to 91.3 GHz. This includes lines of C3H2, CH3CCH, HOCO+, SO, H13CN, H13CO+, SO, H13NC, C2H, HNCO, HCN, HCO+, HNC, HC3N, 13CS and N2H+.

A two-fluid model to OB stars is investigated, in which the flow is described by a set of two components, One for the dense clumps and the other for the smooth gas. The two components are coupled by friction drag. The velocity structure of clumps is assumed to be beta law, thus, the velocity structure of the second component could be attained by shooting method. The result is compared with the X-ray observations.

Magnetic field is playing an important role at all stages of star evolution from star formation to the endpoints. The main effects are briefly reviewed. We also show that O–type stars have large convective envelopes, where convective dynamo could work. There, fields in magnetostatic balance have intensities of the order of 100 G.

A few OB stars with strong polar fields (Henrichs et al. 2003a) show large N–enhancements indicating a strong internal mixing. We suggest that the meridional circulation enhanced by an internal rotation law close to uniform in these magnetic stars is responsible for the observed mixing. Thus, it is not the magnetic field itself which makes the mixing, but the strong thermal instability associated to solid body rotation.

A critical question for evolution is whether a dynamo is at work in radiative zones of rotating stars. The Tayler-Spruit (TS) dynamo is the best candidate. We derive some basic relations for dynamos in radiative layers. Evolutionary models with TS dynamo show important effects: internal rotation coupling and enhanced mixing, all model outputs being affected.

Our knowledge of the Universe remains discovery-led: in the absence of adequate physics-based theory, interpretation of new results requires a scientific methodology. Commonly, scientific progress in astrophysics is motivated by the empirical success of the “Copernican Principle”, that the simplest and most objective analysis of observation leads to progress. A complementary approach tests the prediction of models against observation. In practise, astrophysics has few real theories, and has little control over what we can observe. Compromise is unavoidable. Advances in understanding complex non-linear situations, such as galaxy formation, require that models attempt to isolate key physical properties, rather than trying to reproduce complexity. A specific example is discussed, where substantial progress in fundamental physics could be made with an ambitious approach to modelling: simulating the spectrum of perturbations on small scales.

Division XII consists of Commissions that formerly were organized under the Executive Committee, that concern astronomers across a wide range of scientific sub-disciplines and provide interactions with scientists in a wider community, including governmental organizations, outside the IAU.

We present mid-IR long-baseline interferometric observations of the red supergiant WOH G64 in the Large Magellanic Cloud with MIDI at the ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Our MIDI observations of WOH G64 are the first VLTI observations to spatially resolve an individual stellar source in an extragalactic system. Our 2-D radiative transfer modeling reveals the presence of a geometrically and optically thick torus seen nearly pole-on. This model brings WOH G64 in much better agreement with the current evolutionary tracks for a 25 M⊙ star — about a half of the previous estimate of 40 M⊙ — and solves the serious discrepancy between theory and observation which existed for this object.

We investigate the tidal disruption of a red giant whose envelope is thought to be stripped off when it passed by a massive black hole. Since the low-density stellar envelope would be lost, the tidal disruption of a red giant by massive black hole is regarded as primarily happening in its core region. The object is called a stripped red giant (SRG). Comparing our results with the three candidate tidal disruption events detected by Chandra in 2001 and 2002, i.e., the X-ray flares of NGC 5905, RX J1242.6-1119A, and RX J1624.9+7554, we argue that the tidal disruption of a stripped red giant is strongly ruled out.

We present a study of solar energetic particles (SEPs) in association with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and type II radio bursts. The particle and CME observations cover the years 1996–2007. We find that heavy-ion events in association with type II bursts and proton events are produced in more western and most energetic CMEs. In addition, the source distribution of type II associated proton events with heavy ions reminds the source distribution expected for events with flare particles. Therefore, the estimation of relative contributions by flares and shocks in SEP events and separation of suggested different particle acceleration models is complicated.

This review presents most recent measurements of magnetic fields in various types of stars and substellar objects across the H-R diagram with the emphasis on measurement methods, observational and modeling biases, and the role of magnetic fields in stellar evolution.
