This was the second Triennium in which the Central Bureau issued electronic-only CBETs to aid in the rapid dissemination of reports. Only 174 CBETs had been issued in the 2002-2005 Triennium, but they evolved into a full supplemental and complemental publication to the Circulars during this past Triennium, reflecting the move toward electronic publication and away from printed publication.

Two consecutive transits of planetary companion OGLE-TR-111b were observed in the I band. Combining these observations with data from the literature, we find that the timing of the transits cannot be explained by a constant period, and that the observed variations cannot be originated by the presence of a satellite. However, a perturbing planet with the mass of the Earth in an exterior orbit could explain the observations if the orbit of OGLE-TR-111b is eccentric. We also show that the eccentricity needed to explain the observations is not ruled out by the radial velocity data found in the literature.

We present unique observations obtained by the Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument (MIMI) on the Cassini spacecraft, of the energetic ion population in the environment upstream from the dawn-to-noon sector of the Kronian magnetosphere during the approach phase and subsequent several orbits of the Cassini spacecraft around the planet. High sensitivity observations of energetic ion directional intensities, energy spectra, and ion composition were obtained by the Ion and Neutral Camera (INCA) of the MIMI instrument complement with a geometry factor of ~2.5 cm2sr. Charge state information was provided by the Charge-Energy-Mass-Spectrometer (CHEMS) over the range ~3 to 220 keV per charge. The observations revealed the presence of distinct upstream bursts of energetic hydrogen and oxygen ions up to distances of ~135 RS. The observations are presented and their theoretical implications are addressed.

In order to discuss the contribution of mass transfer in primordial close binaries to the blue straggler population in young clusters, we use Eggleton's stellar evolution code to simulate a grid of case A binary evolutionary models with the initial donor mass 2.0 – 8.0 M⊙ and mass ratio 0.1 – 0.9. The models cover the whole case A binaries that will experience mass transfer between 30.0 Myr to 1.0 Gyr. Based on such detailed models, we present a simulation to compare with the HST observation of young cluster NGC 1831 which can be fit with an isochrone of log(age) = 8.65. The results show very few blue stragglers could be produced by case A binary evolution. There must be some other mechanisms for blue straggler formation in young clusters.

The paper provides an overview on the results of the analyses of spectro-polarimetric observations of white dwarfs, subdwarfs, and central stars of planetary nebulae. It will also discuss the question of the origin of the magnetic fields in white dwarfs.

As messengers from the early Solar System, comets contain key information from the time of planet formation and even earlier – some may contain material formed in our natal interstellar cloud. Along with water, the cometary nucleus contains ices of natural gases (CH4, C2H6), alcohols (CH3OH), acids (HCOOH), embalming fluid (H2CO), and even anti-freeze (ethylene glycol). Comets today contain some ices that vaporize at temperatures near absolute zero (CO, CH4), demonstrating that their compositions remain largely unchanged after 4.5 billion years. By comparing their chemical diversity, several distinct cometary classes have been identified but their specific relation to chemical gradients in the proto-planetary disk remains murky. How does the compositional diversity of comets relate to nebular processes such as chemical processing, radial migration, and dynamical scattering? No current reservoir holds a unique class, but their fractional abundance can test emerging dynamical models for origins of the scattered Kuiper disk, the Oort cloud, and the (proposed) main-belt comets. I will provide a simplified overview emphasizing what we are learning, current issues, and their relevance to the subject of this Symposium.

The main purpose of Commission 14 is to foster interactions between the astronomical community and those conducting research on atoms, molecules and solid state particles. One way the Commission accomplishes this goal is through triennial compilations on recent relevant research in atomic, molecular and solid state physics, as well as related chemical fields. The most recent compilations appear in the following set of WG Triennial Reports, which were produced by members of the Working Groups and the Organizing Committee of Commission 14. Before presenting the Reports, we highlight the meetings supported by the Commission.

We have calculated optical spectra of hydrogen-rich (DA) white dwarfs with magnetic field strengths between 1 MG and 1000 MG for temperatures between 7000 K and 50000 K. Through a least-squares minimization scheme, we have analyzed the spectra of 114 magnetic DAs from the Sloan Digital Survey (SDSS; 95 previously published plus 14 newly discovered within SDSS).

Polarimetric observations demonstrated that all comets with significant values of circular polarization show predominantly left–handed circularly polarized light. We discuss the presence of homochiral organics in cometary materials as a source of the observed circular polarization. We have studied the effect of chirality on light–scattering properties of cometary dust considering particles that possess optical activity. Our investigations show that the cometary dust may include optically active materials which can be prebiological homochiral organics.

We have carried out a detailed study of the single-degenerate channel for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). In the model, a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) accretes hydrogen-rich material from an unevolved or a slightly evolved non-degenerate companion to increase its mass to Chandrasekhar mass limit. Incorporating the prescription of Hachisu et al. (1999a) for the accretion efficiency into Eggleton's stellar evolution code and assuming that the prescription is valid for all metallicities, we performed binary stellar evolution calculations for more than 25,000 close WD binary systems with various metallicities. The initial parameter spaces for SNe Ia are presented in an orbital period-secondary mass (log Pi, M2i) plane for each Z.

Adopting the results above, we studied the birth rate of SNe Ia for various Z via binary population synthesis. From the study, we see that for a high Z, SNe Ia occur systemically earlier and the peak value of the birth rate is larger if a single starburst is assumed. The Galactic birth rate from the channel is lower than (but comparable to) that inferred from observations.

We also showed the distributions of the parameters of the binary systems at the moment of supernova explosion and the distributions of the properties of companions after supernova explosion. The former provides physics input to simulate the interaction between supernova ejecta and its companion, and the latter is helpful for searching the companions in supernova remnants.

Stereographic projection of Hopf field on the 3-sphere into Euclidean 3-space is used as a model of 3D steady flow of ideal compressible fluid in MHD. In such case, flow lines are Villarceau circles lying on tori corresponding to the levels of Bernoulli function. Existence of an optimal torus with minimal relative surface free energy is shown. Beat of oscillations with wave numbers corresponding to structural radii of optimal torus leads to scaling of optimal tori. Spatial intersection of homothetic tori within one torus result in formation of cluster with the size depending on scaling factor. Optimal tori are considered as precursors of planetary orbits.

This project consists in mapping a 4-square-degree region searching for exoplanets using the transit method. This “mini-survey” will be the first use of the 16″ robotic telescope developed by Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC-Brazil) and Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (LNA/MCT-Brazil). The chosen region is over the Columba constellation and our first observations have shown that we have enough signal-to-noise ratio to search for transits on about 20,000 stars with ~13 < I < 16 mag, a magnitude range between the OGLE and HAT projects. In this star sample we expect to find about a dozen planets with transits duration of 1-3 hours and magnitude depth from 0.001 to 0.010 mag. As for other projects, all information will became public as a VO service.

Modern radio telescopes are extremely sensitive to plasma on the line of sight from a radio source to the antenna. Plasmas in the corona and solar wind produce measurable changes in the radio wave amplitude and phase, and the phase difference between wave fields of opposite circular polarization. Such measurements can be made of radio waves from spacecraft transmitters and extragalactic radio sources, using radio telescopes and spacecraft tracking antennas. Data have been taken at frequencies from about 80 MHz to 8000 MHz. Lower frequencies probe plasma at greater heliocentric distances. Analysis of these data yields information on the plasma density, density fluctuations, and plasma flow speeds in the corona and solar wind, and on the magnetic field in the solar corona. This paper will concentrate on the information that can be obtained from measurements of Faraday rotation through the corona and inner solar wind. The magnitude of Faraday rotation is proportional to the line of sight integral of the plasma density and the line-of-sight component of the magnetic field. Faraday rotation provides an almost unique means of estimating the magnetic field in this part of space. This technique has contributed to measurement of the large scale coronal magnetic field, the properties of electromagnetic turbulence in the corona, possible detection of electrical currents in the corona, and probing of the internal structure of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This paper concentrates on the search for small-scale coronal turbulence and remote sensing of the structure of CMEs. Future investigations with the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) or Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) could provide unique observational input on the astrophysics of CMEs.

We present results from an attempt to detect radio emission from the interaction between a transiting extra-solar planet and its host star. We determine a new upper limit of 47 mJy on the radio flux density from HD 189733b, in the frequency range 327–347 MHz.

References including experimental data on line structure, hyperfine structure (HFS) or isotope structure (IS) are also included.

It is known since long ago that in comets a large quantity of organic matter exists in form of grains or is embedded in silicate grains. This was detected in situ by cometary space missions as well as inferred as a distributed source of some molecules observed in comets. Since organic matter is rather volatile, finding slow sublimating grains in comets can be good evidence of organics as a constituent of such grains. Here we describe a method to detect sublimating grains in comets. It consists of specific observations, specific data analysis, and some light-scattering modeling. We detect sublimating grains by measuring the quantity of grains as a function of the nucleocentric distance. Once detected, it is possible to get their photometric characteristics and compare them with the results of light-scattering modeling. The method has been applied to several comets. Sublimating grains were reliably identified for two of them.

We present the results of binary population simulations of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars. We show that nitrogen and fluorine are useful tracers of the origin of CEMP stars, and conclude that the observed paucity of very nitrogen-rich stars puts strong constraints on possible modifications of the initial mass function at low metallicity. The large number fraction of CEMP stars may instead require much more efficient dredge-up from low-metallicity asymptotic giant branch stars.

The presence of magnetic fields in O-type stars has been suspected for a long time. The discovery of such fields would explain a wide range of well documented enigmatic phenomena in massive stars, in particular cyclical wind variability, Hα emission variations, chemical peculiarity, narrow X-ray emission lines and non-thermal radio/X-ray emission. Here we present the results of our studies of magnetic fields in O-type stars, carried out over the last years.

Research in atomic and molecular collision processes and spectral line broadening has been very active since our last report (Schultz & Stancil 2007, Allard & Peach 2007). Given the large volume of the published literature and the limited space available, we have attempted to identify work most relevant to astrophysics. Since our report is not comprehensive, additional publications can be found in the databases at the web addresses listed in the final section. Elastic and inelastic collisions among electrons, atoms, ions, and molecules are included and reactive processes are also considered, but except for charge exchange, they receive only sparse coverage.

We have measured transit times for HD 189733 passing in front of its bright (V = 7.67) chromospherically active and spotted parent star. Nearly continuous broadband photometry of this system was obtained with the MOST (Microvariability & Oscillations of STars) space telesope during 21 days in August 2006, monitoring 10 consecutive transits. We have used these data to search for deviations from a constant orbital period which can indicate the presence of additional planets in the system that are as yet undetected by Doppler searches. We find no variations above the level of ±45 s, ruling out planets in the Earth-to-Neptune mass range in a number of resonant orbits. We find that a number of complications can arise in measuring transit times for a planet transiting an active star with large star spots. However, such transiting systems are also useful in that they can help to constrain and test spot models. This has implications for the large number of transiting systems expected to be discovered by the CoRoT and Kepler missions.
