This review presents most recent measurements of magnetic fields in various types of stars and substellar objects across the H-R diagram with the emphasis on measurement methods, observational and modeling biases, and the role of magnetic fields in stellar evolution.

The recently discovered transiting very hot Jupiter, HAT-P-7b, a planet detected by the telescopes of HATNet, turned out to be among the ones subjected to the highest irradiation from the parent star. In order to best characterize this particular planet, we carried out an analysis based on a complete and simultaneous Monte-Carlo solution using all available data. We included the discovery light curves, partial follow-up light curves, the radial velocity data, and we used the stellar evolution models to infer the stellar properties.

This self-consistent way of modeling provides the most precise estimate of the a posteriori distributions of all of the system parameters of interest, and avoids making assumptions on the values and uncertainties of any of the internally derived variables describing the system. This analysis demonstrates that even partial light curve information can be valuable. This may become very important for future discoveries of planets with longer periods – and therefore longer transit durations – where the chance of observing a full event is small.

The interstellar medium (ISM) spectrum is usually explained by the response of dust particles (DPs) to the absorption of ultraviolet (UV) and visible (VIS) photons from nearby stars. With regard to the unidentified infrared (UIR) bands, the DPs are thought heated by UV and VIS photons to about 100 K thereby exciting the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, the UIR bands may be explained with the DPs at 2.7 K. To wit, the UIR bands form by the direct excitation of PAHs by infrared (IR) radiation induced from the absorption of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in DPs by quantum electrodynamics (QED).

The Magellanic Clouds are often characterized as “irregular” galaxies, a term that implies an overall lack of organized structure. While this may be a fitting description of the Small Cloud, the Large Magellanic Cloud, contrary to popular opinion, should not be considered an irregular galaxy. It is characterized by a distinctive morphology of having an offset stellar bar and single spiral arm. Such morphology is relatively common in galaxies of similar mass throughout the local Universe, although explaining the origin of these features has proven challenging. Through a number of recent studies we are beginning to get a better grasp on what it means to be a Magellanic spiral. One key result of these works is that we now recognize that the most unique aspect of the Magellanic Clouds is not their structure, but, rather, their proximity to a larger spiral such as the Milky Way.

IAU Commission 5 deals with data management issues, and its working groups and task groups deal specifically with information handling, with data centres and networks, with technical aspects of collection, archiving, storage and dissemination of data, with designations and classification of astronomical objects, with library services, editorial policies, computer communications, ad hoc methodologies, and with various standards, reference frames, etc., FITS, astronomys Flexible Image Transport System, the major data exchange format, is controlled, maintained and updated by the Working Group FITS.

Astronomers are well aware of the changing nature, volume, and complexity of astronomical data. Most of us are aware that next generation instruments, with Terabyte databases, are going to present enormous challenges to the way that we process data, and our current ways of managing astronomical databases will probably no longer work. So there are a number of initiatives within the astronomical community, most notably the Virtual Observatory, which aim to address these. However, many astronomers are not aware that similar challenges are being met in other disciplines (e.g., geosciences, life sciences, etc.) and that similar solutions are being sought. As a result, astronomy has much to gain from cross-fertilisation with other disciplines.

The two Helios probes traveled at variable longitudinal and radial separations through the inner heliosphere. They collected most valuable high resolution plasma and magnetic field data for an entire solar cycle. The mission is still so successful that no other missions will collect the same kind of data in the next 20 years. One of the subjects studied after the success of the Helios mission was the identification of more than 390 shock waves driven by Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs). Combining the data from both probes, we make a statistical study for the extension of the shock waves in the interplanetary medium. For longitudinal separations of 90° we found a cutoff value at this angular separation. A shock has 50% of chance to be observed by both probes and the same probability for not being observed by two spacecrafts at the same time, when the angle between them is around 90°. We describe the dependence of the probability for shocks to be observed by both probes with decreasing spacecraft separation. Including plasma data from the ISEE-3 and IMP-8 spacecrafts improves our statistical evaluation substantially.

We observed several transits of the exoplanet TrES-1 distributed over four years from 2004 to 2007. On the basis of these observations and additional published data, we present a mid-transit time analysis. The aim is to find indications of the presence of a third body by analysing the difference between the calculated and observed transit times.

The Magellanic Clouds were the largest members of a group of dwarf galaxies that entered the Milky Way (MW) halo at late times. This group, dominated by the LMC, contained ~4% of the mass of the Milky Way prior to its accretion and tidal disruption, but ≈70% of the known dwarfs orbiting the MW. Our theory addresses many outstanding problems in galaxy formation associated with dwarf galaxies. First, it can explain the planar orbital configuration populated by some dSphs in the MW. Second, it provides a mechanism for lighting up a subset of dwarf galaxies to reproduce the cumulative circular velocity distribution of the satellites in the MW. Finally, our model predicts that most dwarfs will be found in association with other dwarfs. The recent discovery of Leo V (Belokurov et al. 2008), a dwarf spheroidal companion of Leo IV, and the nearby dwarf associations supports our hypothesis.

The Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) Project is a consensus collaboration among the foremost international researchers of the physics of hot, massive stars, with the basic aim of understanding the origin, evolution and impact of magnetic fields in these objects. The cornerstone of the project is the MiMeS Large Program at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, which represents a dedication of 640 hours of telescope time from 2008-2012. The MiMeS Large Program will exploit the unique capabilities of the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter to obtain critical missing information about the poorly-studied magnetic properties of these important stars, to confront current models and to guide theory.

Anhydrous interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), which are the most mineralogically primitive extraterrestrial materials available for laboratory analysis, contain several percent organic matter. The high O:C and N:C ratios suggest the organic matter in the anhydrous IDPs is significantly less altered by thermal processing than the organic matter in meteorites. X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy demonstrate the presence of C=C, most likely as C-rings, C=O, and aliphatic C-H2 and C-H3 in all the IDPs examined. A D-rich spot, containing material that is believed to have formed in a cold molecular cloud, has C-XANES and infrared spectra very similar to the organic matter in the anhydrous IDPs, possibly indicating a common formation mechanism. However the primitive organic matter in the IDPs differs from the interstellar/circumstellar organic matter characterized by astronomical infrared spectroscopy in the relative strengths of the asymmetric aliphatic C-H2 and C-H3 absorptions, with the IDP organic having a longer mean chain length. If both types of organic matter originated by the same process, this may indicate the interstellar organic matter has experienced more severe radiation processing than the organic matter in the primitive IDPs.

About 10 TeV γ-ray emission within 10 pc region from the Galactic Center had been reported by 4 independent groups. Considering that this TeV γ-ray emission is produced via a hadronic model, and the relativistic protons came from the tidal disruption of stars by massive black holes, we investigate the spectral nature of the injected relativistic protons required by the hadronic model. The calculation was carried on the tidal disruption of the different types of stars and the different propagation mechanisms of protons in the interstellar medium. Compared with the observation data from HESS, we find for the best fitting that the power-law index of the spectrum of the injected protons is about −1.9, when a red giant star is tidally disrupted, and the effective confinement of protons diffusion mechanism is adopted.

Studying the disk of the Milky Way in its cosmological context, as reflected in the title of this conference, was pioneered by Bengt Strömgren, in whose honour we are gathered here. A significant legacy of his is the understanding that advances are achieved by making connections among fields that are tenuously related on initial inspection. When the tools to achieve this were not available, Bengt Strömgren developed the necessary techniques, such as Strömgren photometry to quantify the local stellar population.

A numerical simulation with ENLIL+Cone model was carried out to study the propagation of the shock driven by the 2005 May 13 CME. We then conducted a statistical analysis on a subset of similar events, where a decameter-hectometric (DH) type II radio burst and a counterpart kilometric type II have been observed to be associated with each CME (DHkm CME). The simulation results show that fast CME-driven shocks experienced a rapid deceleration as they propagated through the corona and then kept a nearly constant speed traveling out into the heliosphere. Two improved methods are proposed to predict the fast CME-driven shock arrival time, which give the prediction errors of 3.43 and 6.83 hrs, respectively.

We present equivalent width measurements and limits of six diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs, λ 4428, λ 5705, λ 5780, λ 5797, λ 6284, and λ 6613) in seven damped Lyα absorbers (DLAs) over the redshift range 0.091 ≤ z ≤ 0.524, sampling 20.3 ≤ log N(Hi) ≤ 21.7. Based upon the Galactic DIB–N(H i) relation, the λ 6284 DIB equivalent width upper limits in four of the seven DLAs are a factor of 4–10 times below the λ 6284 DIB equivalent widths observed in the Galaxy, but are not inconsistent with those present in the Magellanic Clouds. Assuming the Galactic DIB–E(B − V) relation, we determine reddening upper limits for the DLAs in our sample. Based upon the E(B − V) limits, the gas-to-dust ratios, N(H i)/E(B − V), of the four aforementioned DLAs are at least ~5 times higher than that of the Galactic ISM and are more consistent with the Large Magellanic Cloud. The ratios of two other DLAs are at least a factor of a few times higher. The best constraints on reddening derive from the upper limits for the λ 5780 and λ 6284 DIBs, which yield E(B − V) ≤ 0.08 mag for four of the seven DLAs and are more consistent with the Magellanic Clouds rather than the Galaxy. Our results suggest that, in DLAs, quantities related to dust, such as reddening and metallicity, appear to have a greater impact on DIB strengths than does H i gas abundance. The molecules responsible for the DIBs in DLA selected sightlines are underabundant relative to sightlines in the Galaxy of similarly high N(H i). Using DIBs to study the ISM of DLAs provide evidence that at least some population of DLAs are more Magellanic-like than Galactic-like.

We have initiated an extensive program of molecular analysis of extraterrestrial organic matter isolated from a broad range of meteorites (spanning multiple classes, groups, and petrologic types), including recent molecular spectroscopic analyses of the organic matter in the Comet 81P/Wild 2 samples. The results of these analyses clearly reveal the signature of multiple reaction pathways that transformed extraterrestrial organic matter away from its primitive roots. The most significant molecular transformation occurred in the post-accretionary phase of the parent body. However, each of the various chemical transformation trajectories point unambiguously back to a common primitive origin. Applying a wide range of spectroscopic techniques we find that the primitive organic precursor is striking in its chemical complexity exhibiting a broad array of oxygen- and nitrogen-bearing functional groups. The π-bonded carbon exists as predominately highly substituted single ring aromatics, there exists no evidence for abundant, large, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We find that the molecular structure of primitive extraterrestrial organics is consistent with synthesis from small reactive molecules, e. g. formaldehyde, whose random condensation and subsequent rearrangement chemistry at low temperatures leads to a highly cross-linked macromolecule.

We have started high precision photometric monitoring observations at the AIU Jena observatory in Großschwabhausen near Jena in fall 2006. We used a 25.4cm Cassegrain telescope equipped with a CCD-camera mounted piggyback on a 90cm telescope. To test the attainable photometric precision, we observed stars with known transiting planets. We could recover all planetary transits observed by us.

We observed the parent star of the transiting planet TrES-2 over a longer period in Großschwabhausen. Between March and November 2007 seven different transits and almost a complete orbital period were analyzed. Overall, in 31 nights of observation 3423 exposures (in total 57.05h of observation) of the TrES-2 parent star were taken. Here, we present our methods and the resulting light curves. Using our observations we could improve the orbital parameters of the system.

The magnetic chemically peculiar stars exhibit both inhomogeneous horizontal distribution of chemical elements on their surfaces and the light variability. We show that the observed light variability of these stars can be successfully simulated using models of their stellar atmospheres and adopting the observed surface distribution of elements. The most important elements that influence the light variability are silicon, iron, and helium.

The IAU Working Group on Libraries was officially recognized for the first time in the Transactions of the IAU XXIA Reports on Astronomy (McNally 1991), but librarians were involved in Commission 5 activities before that (largely due to the efforts of George A. Wilkins, president of the Commission from 1982 to 1988, see Transactions of the IAU XXA Reports on Astronomy, Swings 1988). Wayne Warren (NASA GSFC, MD, USA) and Helen Knudsen (Calech, CA, USA) were the group's first chairpersons, Brenda Corbin (U.S. Naval Observatory) became Helen Knudsen's successor in 1990. Since 1996, Fionn Murtagh (School of Computer Science, Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland) and Uta Grothkopf (European Southern Observatory, Germany) have been co-chairs.
