Three spinel materials were prepared and characterized by in situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) techniques to track their phase changes that occurred in the typical batch synthesis process from a sol–gel mixture to the final crystalline spinel oxide. The materials were also characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, whereby the materials decomposition mechanisms that were observed as the precursor, was gradually heated to the final oxide. The results showed that all the materials achieved their total weight loss at about 400 °C. The in situ PXRD analysis showed the progression of the phase transitions where certain of the materials changed from a crystalline precursor to an amorphous intermediate phase and finally to the spinel cathode oxide (Li1.03Mg0.2Mn1.77O4). For other materials, the precursor would start as an amorphous phase and upon heating, convert into an impure intermediate phase (Mn2O3) before forming the final spinel oxide (Li1.03Mn1.97O4). On the other hand, the LiAl0.4Mn1.6O4 would start with an amorphous precursor, with no intermediate phases and immediately formed the final spinel oxide phase. The in situ PXRD study also showed the increases in the materials respective lattice parameters of the crystalline unit cells upon heating and the significant increases in their crystallite sizes when heated above 600 °C.

Novel compounds Ca8−xPbxZnBi(VO4)7 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5) solid solution with the whitlockite-type structure were synthesized by a standard solid-state method. The unit-cell parameters were determined by X-ray powder diffraction and using Le Bail decomposition. The crystal structural of Ca6.5Pb1.5ZnBi(VO4)7 was refined by Rietveld method. It is found that Pb2+ cations occupy a half of the M3 site, whereas the M1 and M2 sites are predominantly occupied by calcium with admixture of Bi3+ cations. The M5 site is fully occupied by Zn2+ cations. The M4 site in the structure of studied sample remains vacant and does not participate in the cations arrangement. Optical second harmonic generation demonstrates high non-linear optical activity. Dielectric investigations confirm polar space group R3c. Changes in the non-linear optical and ferroelectric parameters are matched with lead and zinc cation distribution over the sites of the whitlockite-type structure.

This paper describes a new flow-through capillary sample holder that allows the in situ study of re-solvation processes. The holder can be aligned to the goniometer's center using two perpendicular micrometric tables that move in y and z directions. The re-solvation of two ibrutinib solvates of anisole and fluorobenzene was tested using the holder to show the practical application of this technique.

In this paper, some results of neutron diffraction properties of the dispersive double-crystal Si(111) + Si(311) and Si(111) + Si(400) monochromator settings containing two bent perfect crystals but with the second one – analyzer in the strongly asymmetric diffraction geometry, are presented. For the sake of possible applications, both double crystal settings were tested in the orientation of the second crystal for the output beam compression geometry. Powder diffraction test was carried out on a α-Fe(211) pin of the diameter of 2 mm. Contrary to the Si(111) + Si(400) setting, an excellent resolution represented by full width at half maximum in the (Δd/d)-scale was obtained for the Si(111) + Si(311) double crystal monochromator in the parallel as well as in the antiparallel diffraction geometry.

An experimental X-ray powder diffraction pattern was produced and analyzed for imipenem monohydrate, an antimicrobial pharmaceutical agent. Although there are no experimental powder patterns in the ICDD PDF-4/Organics Database, there is one powder pattern calculated with single-crystal X-ray diffraction data from the Cambridge Structural Database. Here, we report the refined experimental powder diffraction data for imipenem monohydrate. These data for imipenem monohydrate are consistent with an orthorhombic crystal system having reduced unit-cell parameters of a = 8.2534(3) Å, b = 11.1293(4) Å, and c = 15.4609(6) Å. The resulting unit-cell volume, 1420.15(15) Å3, indicates four formula units per unit cell. Observed peaks are consistent with the P212121 space group.

Two novel compounds, 3-[1-(2-fluoro-4-biphenyl)ethyl]-6-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazole (C23H16F2N4S) (1) and 3-[1-(2-fluoro-4-biphenyl)ethyl]-6-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazole (C23H16ClFN4S) (2), have been designed and synthesized as cytotoxic agents. The compounds were characterized by infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectral data, elemental analysis and X-ray powder diffraction. The present study comprises spectral data and crystal structures of these novel compounds determined from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. The structure solutions were obtained by simulated annealing. The final structures were achieved by Rietveld refinement using soft restraints for all bond lengths, bond angles, and planar groups. Both compounds crystallize in space group $P\bar 1$, Z = 2, with the unit-cell parameters a = 6.37433(9), b = 11.3641(2), c = 14.09115(19) Å, α = 80.1740(8)°, β = 85.1164(8)°, γ = 80.9831(10)°, V = 991.55(3) Å3 of compound (1) and a = 6.53736(6), b = 11.55725(15), c = 14.01373(13) Å, α = 80.3323(7)°, β = 84.8939(6)°, γ = 79.3954(8)°, V = 1024.08(2) Å3 of compound (2). Structural analyses reveal that the title compounds are isostructural.

The previously unreported crystal structure of (S)-Dapoxetine hydrochloride (DAPHCl), the only active pharmaceutical ingredient specially developed for the treatment of premature ejaculation in men, has been determined from laboratory X-ray powder diffraction data with DASH and refined by the Rietveld method with TOPAS-Academic. The structure was evaluated and optimized by dispersion-corrected DFT calculations. This compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic cell, space group P212121, with unit-cell parameters a= 6.3208(3) Å, b = 10.6681(5) Å, c = 28.1754(10) Å, V = 1899.89(14) Å3, Z = 4. The refinement converged to Rp = 0.0442, Rwp = 0.0577, and GoF = 2.440. The crystal structure is a complex 3D arrangement of DAPHCl moieties held together by hydrogen bonds, π⋯π, and C–H⋯π interactions. The chloride ions form layers parallel to the ab plane and are connected by dapoxetinium moieties through N–H⋯Cl and C–H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. These layers stack along the c-axis, which are connected by C–H⋯π interactions. Hirshfeld surface analysis and fingerprint plot calculations have been performed.

Eu3+-doped SmBa3B9O18 luminescent materials were synthesized by high temperature solid state reactions. The structure and photoluminescence properties of Sm(1−x)EuxBa3B9O18 (x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6) were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectra. The results show that doping of Eu3+ ions does not change the structure of SmBa3B9O18. The luminescence is mainly the characteristic Eu3+ ion luminescence. No concentration quenching processes occur with the increment of Eu3+ concentration. The work implies that SmBa3B9O18 is a potential host material and europium-doped SmBa3B9O18 may find application in display and optical devices.

This paper summarizes an oral presentation of the same title presented at the occasion of recognizing the “The 100th Anniversary of X-ray Spectroscopy” at DXC 2013. It gives an overview of the development in electronics with focus on (mainly) energy-dispersive X-ray detectors and related data processing. Naturally this has its origin in the early transistors and the first semiconductor junction detectors of the late 1940s. It was followed by refinement of semiconductor detector technology in general and particularly by the invention of Li-drifting and employment of low-noise field effect transistors until such devices matured sufficiently to be marketed by the late 1960s. Further improvement followed in resolution, speed, operability at room temperature, and development of junction arrays with imaging capabilities. An important aspect is the development of related software requiring affordable laboratory computers, programming languages, and databases of fundamental parameters. Today x-ray fluorescence analysis (and not only the energy-dispersive variant) is widely employed as an analytical tool for the traditional technical and industrial applications but notably also, at an expanding rate as well as variety, in other fields including environmental, medical, archaeological, space, arts, and many more.

In this paper, X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for bisacodyl, C22H19NO4, are reported [a = 9.081(3) Å, b = 10.631(5) Å, c = 11.549(6) Å, α = 111.492(4)°, β = 108.082(3)°, γ = 101.501(3)°, unit-cell volume V = 922.368 Å3, Z = 2, and space group P-1]. All measured lines were indexed, and no detectable impurity was observed.

Twenty-seven scapolite samples from various localities and with compositions between Me 6–93 were obtained using electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). Their unit-cell parameters were obtained using synchrotron high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (HRPXRD) data and Rietveld structure refinements using space group P42/n. The EMPA data show the well-known discontinuity at Me 75. In addition, the unit-cell parameters, especially c, show a discontinuity at Me 75 (=five Al atoms per formula unit, apfu), ideally NaCa3[Al5Si7O24](CO3), where the scapolite solid solution is divided into two (Me% = [Ca/(Ca + Na + K)] × 100). A maximum c parameter value occurs at Me 37.5 (=four Al apfu ideally), where complete Al–Si, Na–Ca, and Cl–CO3 order occurs. The unit-cell volume, V, varies smoothly with Me% and Al apfu across the series.

The crystal structure of oxybutynin hydrochloride hemihydrate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Oxybutynin hydrochloride hemihydrate crystallizes in space group I2/a (#15) with a = 14.57266(8), b = 8.18550(6), c = 37.16842(26) Å, β = 91.8708(4)°, V = 4421.25(7) Å3, and Z = 8. The compound exhibits X-ray-induced photoreduction of the triple bond. Prominent in the layered crystal structure is the N–H⋅⋅⋅Cl hydrogen bond between the cation and anion, as well as O–H⋅⋅⋅Cl hydrogen bonds from the water molecule and hydroxyl group of the oxybutynin cation. C–H⋅⋅⋅Cl hydrogen bonds also contribute to the crystal energy, and help determine the conformation of the cation. The powder pattern is included in the Powder Diffraction File™ as entry 00-068-1305.

A new compound Er0.33Sr1.67Ni0.8Cu0.2O4−δ (ErSr5Ni2.4Cu0.6O11) was prepared using the conventional solid state method and annealed at 1423 K in 1 atm of oxygen gas flow. The oxygen non-stoichiometry (δ = 0.47) was determined by iodometric titration. Rietveld refinement using powder X-ray diffraction data confirms that the sample adopts the K2NiF4-type structure (space group I4/mmm (Z = 2), a = 3.760 56(4) and c = 12.3889(1) Ǻ). The final reliability factors were: Rwp = 10.75%, χ2 = 2.51, Rp = 14.80%, RB = 4.77% and RF = 2.73%. Four probe electrical resistivity measurements were performed vs. temperature in the range of 320–540 K. A semiconducting behaviour over the whole range of temperature, with a maximum conductivity of 0.026 S cm−1 is observed at 439 K.

The ICDD has developed a microanalysis tool to help scientists identify minerals from their elemental analyses, most typically micro-XRF or a microprobe analysis. Many minerals have characteristic elemental profiles that can often distinguish the mineral from others by their composition differences. In Release 2016 ICDD® PDF-4 databases 20 670 unique compositions have been identified out of 45 497 mineral and mineral-related entries. The application utilizes several common features of PDF® databases to enhance correct identification, most notably those formulas are expressed in weight and atomic percent, data sets are classified by mineral nomenclature and structural classifications, and most minerals have associated atomic and molecular structures. These crystal structures are very useful in determining compositional variants and solid solutions. The ICDD has developed algorithms that are analogous to the search/match processes used for powder diffraction identification. Data can be input as either the element or common oxide. To test the algorithm and graphics interfaces we compared results from the microanalysis module to published data from the Smithsonian Microbeam reference mineral collection. The software correctly identified 24/28 minerals by the highest merit score in the algorithm. In two cases, an isoelemental mineral was identified and in two other cases, the specimens had more elements than the reference standards hindering positive phase identification.

The crystal structure of butenafine hydrochloride has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Butenafine hydrochloride crystallizes in space group P21 (#4) with a = 13.94807(5), b = 9.10722(2), c = 16.46676(6) Å, β = 93.9663(5)°, V = 2086.733(8) Å3, and Z = 4. Butenafine hydrochloride occurs as a racemic co-crystal of R and S enantiomers of the cation. The crystal structure is characterized by parallel stacks of aromatic rings along the b-axis. Each cation forms a strong discrete N–H⋯Cl hydrogen bond. The chloride anions also act as acceptors in several C–H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds from methylene, methyl, and aromatic groups. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

The crystal structure of indacaterol hydrogen maleate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Indacaterol hydrogen maleate crystallizes in space group P-1 (#24) with a = 8.86616(9), b = 9.75866(21), c = 16.67848(36) Å, α = 102.6301(10), β = 94.1736(6), γ = 113.2644(2)°, V = 1273.095(7) Å3, and Z = 2 at 295 K. The crystal structure consists of layers of cations and anions parallel to the ab-plane. Traditional N–H⋯O and O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the cations and anions into chains along the a-axis. There is a strong intramolecular charge-assisted O–H⋯O hydrogen bond in the non-planar hydrogen maleate anion. There are also two C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the anion and cation. The cation makes a strong N–H⋯O hydrogen bond to the anion, but also acts as a hydrogen bond donor to an aromatic C in another cation. The amino group makes bifurcated N–H⋯O hydrogen bonds, one intramolecular and the other intermolecular. The hydroxyl group acts as a donor to another cation. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

The application of continuous-scan integration to collect X-ray diffraction data with a Si strip X-ray detector (CSI-SSXD) introduces additional effects on the peak shift and deformation of peak shape caused by the equatorial aberration. A deconvolutional method to correct the effects of equatorial aberration in CSI-SSXD data is proposed in this study. There are four critical angles related to the effects of spillover of the incident X-ray beam from the specimen face in the CSI-SSXD data. Exact values of cumulants of the equatorial aberration function are efficiently evaluated by 4 × 4 point two-dimensional Gauss–Legendre integral. A naïve two-step deconvolutional method has been applied to remove the effects of the first and third-order cumulants of the equatorial aberration function from the observed CSI-SSXD data. The performance of the algorithm has been tested by analyses of CSI-SSXD data of three LaB6 powder specimens with the widths of 20, 10, and 5 mm, collected with a diffractometer with the goniometer radius of 150 mm.

A commercial Empyrean X-ray diffractometer was adapted for combined grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence analysis (GIXRF) measurements with X-ray reflectivity (XRR) measurements. An energy-dispersive silicon drift detector was mounted and integrated in the angle-dependent data acquisition of the Empyrean. Different monochromator/X-ray optics units have been compared with the values obtained by the Atominstitut GIXRF + XRR spectrometer. Data evaluation was performed by JGIXA, a special software for combined GIXRF + XRR data fitting, developed at Atominstitut. A sample consisting of a ~50 nm nickel layer on a silicon substrate was used to compare the performance criteria (i.e. divergence and intensity) of the incident beam optics. An Empyrean X-ray diffractometer was successfully refitted to measure both GIXRF and XRR data.
