Cornwall (UK) has suffered extensive arsenic contamination due to the historic mining and processing of mineral ores. Standard procedures for contaminated land risk assessment (DEFRA and Environment Agency, 2002a) are probably unworkable in Cornwall, with a very large number of sites classified as contaminated by arsenic. Methods of measuring the speciation and mobility of arsenic are essential for effective and rapid risk assessments of arsenic contamination.

Three clusters of lysimeters were installed in three different areas of an arsenic-contaminated Cornish site. A novel phosphoric acid microwave extraction technique was applied to the soils removed from the lysimeter holes; HPLC-HG-AFS analysis showed the majority of solid-phase arsenic to be arsenate (AsV). Pore waters obtained from the lysimeters showed variable, relatively low levels of arsenite (AsIII) and arsenate (AsV) to be present (<1–129 μg l–1). Less toxic arsenate predominated in most pore waters, with the presence of minor amounts of arsenite suggesting heterogeneous redox conditions. Pore-water arsenic concentrations were strongly positively related to solid-phase arsenate concentrations.

The use of techniques that assess the speciation of arsenic both in the solid and aqueous phases of a soil provides important information about the mobility of arsenic. The methodology presented in this paper may offer a novel basis for risk assessments of other contaminated sites.

The late Cretaceous Kızıldağ ophiolite forms one of the best exposures of oceanic lithospheric remnants of southern Neotethys to the north of the Arabian promontory in Turkey. The ultramafic to mafic cumulate rocks, displaying variable thickness (ranging from 165 to 700 m), are ductiley deformed, possibly in response to syn-magmatic extension during sea-floor spreading and characterized by wehrlite, olivine gabbro, olivine gabbronorite and gabbro. The gabbroic cumulates have an intrusive contact with the wehrlitic cumulates in some places. The crystallization order of the cumulus and intercumulus phases is olivine (Fo86–77)± chromian spinel, clinopyroxene (Mg#92–76), plagio-clase(An95–83), orthopyroxene(Mg#87–79). The olivine, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene and plagioclase in ultramafic and mafic cumulate rocks seem to have similar compositional range. This suggests that these rocks cannot represent a simple crystal line of descent. Instead the overlapping ranges in mineral compositions in different rock types suggest multiple magma generation during crustal accretion for the Kızıldağ ophiolite. The presence of high Mg# of olivine, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, and the absence of Ca-rich plagioclase as an early fractionating phase co-precipitating with forsteritic olivine, suggest that the Kızıldağ plutonic suite is not likely to have originated in a mid-ocean ridge environment. Instead the whole-rock and mineral chemistry of the cumulates indicates their derivation from an island arc tholeiitic (IAT) magma. All the evidence indicates that the Kızıldağ ophiolite formed along a slow-spreading centre in a fore-arc region of a suprasubduction zone tectonic setting.

The equations of state of dense hydrous magnesium silicates (DHMS), determined from high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction are reviewed, including hydroxylchondrodite, hydroxylclinohumite, phase A, phase B (anhydrous and hydrous), superhydrous phase B and phase E. The phases along the forsterite–brucite join, Mg2SiO4–Mg(OH)2, display near (increasing) linearity in compressibility with respect to water content and increasing bulk moduli (KT) with density. Such trends allow prediction of the as yet unknown bulk moduli of phases such as OH-Mg norbergite. The addition of water also reduces the bulk modulus of the B-phases and the anisotropy observed in axial compression. The alternating layers of octahedra and octahedra + tetrahedra completely control compression of the B phases, with the stacking direction becoming more compressible with addition of water. The enigmatic Phase E has the highest KT' yet measured for a hydrous silicate and one of the lowest KT. In contrast with other DHMS, Phase E is only slightly anisotropic in axial compression and we attribute this to the role of the intralayer cations in the structure. The degree of hydration and the vacancy concentration appear to be coupled in Phase E.

X-ray spectromicroscopy has been applied to the characterization of weathered ilmenite sand samples from Australian localities. X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (Xanes) studies were performed at the K-edges of the major elements Fe and Ti and minor impurity elements Mn and Cr. An extended suite of reference samples with crystallite sizes ranging from 1 nm to μm size were measured to establish if the absorption edge characteristics were influenced by crystal size effects. No changes were detected for oxides of Cr3+, Fe3+ or Ti4+, but the mixed Fe2+/Fe3+ oxide, Fe3O4, showed an edge shift to higher energies (by 1.5 eV) in a nanocrystalline sample. The Xanes study of a composite ilmenite grain with an unweathered primary ilmenite core and a highly weathered rim showed that Fe was present as Fe2+ in the core and Fe3+ in the rim whereas Mn was present as Mn2+ in both core and rim. Chromium, which is incorporated into the grains during weathering, is present predominantly as Cr3+, although minor (~15%) Cr6+ also occurs in highly weathered grains. The absorption K-edges of Fe3+ and Mn2+ are shifted markedly (by 2–3 eV) to higher energies in titanate phases relative to the binary oxides Fe2O3 and MnO.

This paper reviews the results of recent molecular dynamics (MD) modelling studies of the interaction of water and solute species with mineral surfaces and their behaviour in mineral interlayers. Emphasis is on results for single and double hydroxide phases. Computational results are presented for water and anions in the interlayers of the Ca2Al, Mg2Al, and LiAl2 layered double hydroxides and on the surfaces of the Ca2Al phase. Detailed results for water on the (001) surface of brucite (Mg(OH)2) are presented and compared to published results for other phases. In all these cases, hydrogen bonding and the development of a hydrogen-bond network involving the H2O molecules and the solid substrate play very significant roles. The MD methods are especially effective for investigating the structure and dynamics of mineral-fluid interfaces and mineral interlayers, because they can be applied to systems containing hundreds to thousands of atoms and for extended durations of the order of nanoseconds.

Redgillite, Cu6(OH)10(SO4)·H2O, space group P21/c, a 3.155(3) Å, b 10.441(8) Å, c 19.436(16) Å, β 90.089(13)°, V = 640.2(9) Å3, Z = 2, is a new mineral from Silver Gill, Caldbeck Fells, Cumbria, England. The strongest six lines of the X-ray powder-diffraction pattern [d in Å, (I)(hkl)] are: 9.72 (90) (002), 7.11 (100) (012), 4.60 (30) (022), 4.068 (20) (023), 2.880 (30) (112,11), 2.318 (50) (131,13). It occurs as translucent to transparent grass-green bladed crystals up to 0.15 mm long with squared-off or tapering terminations; usually in radiating groups. Forms observed are {001} prominent, {010} as composite stepped faces, and {100} irregular. Redgillite has white streak, vitreous lustre and Mohs hardness of ∼2. Blades are slightly flexible with irregular fracture and exhibit a perfect {001} cleavage and good {100} and {010} cleavages. The measured density (by sink-float) is 3.45(5) g/cm3; the calculated density is 3.450 g/cm3. The mineral dissolves slowly in dilute HCl. Redgillite is biaxial- negative with α = 1.693(2), β = 1.721(2), γ = 1.723(2), 2V = 30(2)° (meas.) and 30° (calc.); dispersion is r > v, medium; pleochroism: Y blue-green α X blue-green α Z yellow-green; orientation: X ≈ c , Y = b, Z ≈ a. Electron microprobe analyses yielded CuO 68.9, SO3 11.6, total 80.5. With water inferred from the structure analysis, the empirical formula is: Cu5.995(OH)9.991(SO4)1.003·H2O. Redgillite is typically found in thin fractures in partly oxidized sulphides where it is commonly associated with langite and more rarely with malachite, cuprite, connellite and brochantite. The name is for the Red Gill mine, from which the mineral is best known. The crystal structure of redgillite was determined and refined to R = 0.090 for 1529 observed reflections [I > 2σ(I)]. The redgillite structure consists of Jahn-Teller distorted CuO6 octahedra and SO4 tetrahedra. The octahedra share edges to form sheets that are zig-zag in cross section. The SO4 tetrahedra share an oxygen with the Cu layer and link the layers by hydrogen bonds to OH groups. The crystal structures of wroewolfeite, langite, posnjakite, spangolite and schulenbergite are similar to redgillite. They all contain edge sharing CuO6 layers connected to SO4 groups with the layers bridged via hydrogen bonds.

Tiny green crystals from Kabwe, Zambia, associated with hopeite and tarbuttite (and probably first recorded in 1908 but never adequately characterized because of their scarcity) have been studied by X-ray diffraction, microchemical and electron probe microanalysis, infrared spectroscopy, and synthesis experiments. They are shown to be orthorhombic, stoichiometric CuZnPO4OH, of species rank, forming the end-member of a solid-solution series to libethenite, Cu2PO4OH, and are named zincolibethenite. The libethenite structure is unwilling to accommodate any more Zn substituting for Cu at atmospheric pressure, syntheses using Zn-rich solutions precipitating a mixture of zincolibethenite with hopeite, Zn3(PO4)2.4H2O. Single-crystal X-ray data confirm that the Cu(II) occupies the Jahn-Teller distorted 6-coordinate cation site in the libethenite lattice, and the Zn(II) occupies the 5-coordinate site. The space group of zincolibethenite is Pnnm, the same as that of libethenite, with unit-cell parameters a = 8.326, b = 8.260, c = 5.877 Å , V = 404.5 Å 3, Z = 4, calculated density = 3.972 g/cm3 (libethenite has a = 8.076, b = 8.407, c = 5.898 Å , V = 400.44 Å 3, Z = 4, calculated density = 3.965 g/cm3). Zincolibethenite is biaxial negative, with 2Vα(calc.) of 49°, r<v, and α = 1.660, β = 1.705, and γ = 1.715 The mineral is named for its relationship to libethenite.

The distribution of sorbed arsenic(V) among different geochemical fractions for arsenic(V)-loaded red mud, an oxide-rich residue from bauxite refining that has been proposed as an adsorbent for arsenic, was studied as a function of sorbed arsenic(V) concentration using a sequential extraction procedure. The release of previously sorbed arsenic(V) was also studied as a function of pH and arsenic(V) concentration. Most sorbed arsenic(V) (0.39–7.86 mmol kg–1) was associated with amorphous and crystalline Al and Fe oxides (24.1–43.8% and 24.7–59.0% of total sorbed arsenic, respectively). Exchangeable arsenic was the smallest fraction (0.4–5.2% of total sorbed arsenic). The distribution of sorbed arsenic(V) was related to the arsenic surface coverage. For arsenic surface coverages >∼30% the percentage of arsenic(V) associated with the amorphous Al oxide fraction increased and that associated with the crystalline oxide fraction decreased. The arsenic(V) exchangeable fraction increased from 1.4 to 756 μmol kg–1 as surface coverage increased from 388 to 7855 μmol kg–1. The release of sorbed arsenic(V) from red mud was greater at alkaline pH values (maximum release of ∼33% of previously sorbed arsenic at pH = 12), but for high arsenic(V) initial concentration (0.2 mM arsenic) considerable amounts of arsenic (6.5% of previously sorbed arsenic) were released at pH 4, in accordance with the dissolution of amorphous Al oxides in the red mud. The results obtained suggest a greater mobility of sorbed arsenic(V) as its surface concentration approaches saturation.

The crystal structure of whewellite [Ca(C2O4)·H2O] and the dehydration mechanism of caoxite [Ca(C2O4)·3H2O] have been studied by means of differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction (powder and single-crystal) analysis and infrared analysis. The first and second analyses confirmed the direct transformation of caoxite into whewellite without an intermediate weddellite [Ca(C2O4)·2H2O] stage. Infrared spectra obtained from caoxite, weddellite and whewellite emphasize the similarity of the O–H-stretching band and O–C–O-stretching band in whewellite and caoxite and the unique bands of weddellite. The structure refinement at low temperature (123 K) reveals that all the hydrogen atoms of whewellite form hydrogen bonds and the two water molecules prop up the crystal structure by the hydrogen bonds that cause a strong anisotropy of the displacement parameter.

Comparing the structural features of whewellite with those of weddellite and caoxite suggests that caoxite and whewellite have a sheet structure consisting of Ca2+ ions and oxalate ions although weddellite does not. It is additionally confirmed that the sheets of caoxite are corrugated by hydrogen bonds but whewellite has flat sheets. The corrugated sheets of caoxite would be flattened by dehydration so the direct transformation of caoxite into whewellite would not occur via weddellite. Essential for this transformation is the dehydration of interlayered water molecules in caoxite leading to the building of the crystal structure of whewellite on its intralayered water molecules. The difference in conformation of water molecules between those two crystal structures may explain the more common occurrence of whewellite than of caoxite in nature.

Kingstonite, ideally Rh3S4, is a new mineral from the Bir Bir river, Yubdo District, Wallaga Province, Ethiopia. It occurs as subhedral, tabular elongate to anhedral inclusions in a Pt-Fe nugget with the associated minerals isoferroplatinum, tetraferroplatinum, a Cu-bearing Pt-Fe alloy, osmium, enriched oxide remnants of osmium, laurite, bowieite, ferrorhodsite and cuprorhodsite. It is opaque with a metallic lustre, has a black streak, is brittle and has a subconchoidal fracture and a good cleavage parallel to [001]. VHN25 is 871–920 kg/mm2. In plane-polarized reflected light, kingstonite is a pale slightly brownish grey colour. It is weakly pleochroic and displays a weak bireflectance. It does not possess internal reflections. The anisotropy is weak to moderate in dull greys and browns. Reflectance data and colour values are tabulated. Average results of twenty electron microprobe analyses on four grains give Rh 46.5, Ir 16.4, Pt 11.2, S 25.6, total 99.7 wt.%. The empirical formula is (Rh2.27Ir0.43Pt0.29)Σ2.99S4.01, based on 7 atoms per formula unit (a.p.f.u.). Kingstonite is monoclinic (C2/m) with a = 10.4616(5), b = 10.7527(5), c = 6.2648(3) Å, β = 109.000(5)°, V = 666.34(1) Å3 (Z = 6). The calculated density is 7.52 g/cm3 (on the basis of the empirical formula and unit-cell parameters refined from powder data). The seven strongest X-ray powder-diffraction lines [d in Å(I) (hkl)] are: 3.156 (100) (310), 3.081 (100) (31), 2.957 (90) (002), 2.234 (60) (202), 1.941 (50) (23), 1.871 (80) (41) and 1.791 (90) (060, 33). The structure of kingstonite was solved and refined to Rp = 3.8%. There are four distinct metal sites with Rh occupancies of 0.64–0.89. Two metal sites are regular RhS6 octahedra that share edges to form a ribbon running parallel to c. The other two metal sites are coordinated by 4 S + 2 Rh and 5 S + 2 Rh and define a puckered Rh6 ring. The ribbons of regular RhS6 octahedra alternate with the columns of Rh6 rings linked by S atoms. S–S bridges also connect the ribbons and columns. As such, the kingstonite structure is essentially that of synthetic Rh3S4. Minor differences in the unit-cell parameters, atom coordinates and displacement parameters of kingstonite and synthetic Rh3S4 arise from the considerable substitution of Ir for Rh. The mineral name honours Gordon Kingston (formerly of Cardiff University) in recognition of his contributions to platinum group element mineralogy and the geology of their mineral deposits.

Coarse-grained mertieite-II [Pd8(Sb,As)3] crystals (up to 2.5 mm across) with inclusions of sperrylite and intergrown with keithconnite [Pd3(Te,Bi)], cooperite-braggite, a Pt-Pd-Hg alloy, a (Pd,Pt)9Te phase and Au-Ag alloy occur in alluvial sediments in the Darya river, Aldan Shield, Russia. The primary PGM assemblage underwent alteration with formation of a very fine-grained mixture of Pd-bearing oxides and hydrated oxides. The Pd oxide/hydrated oxide aggregates (up to 100 μm wide and ~1 mm long) occur along crystallographic planes, on grain boundaries and fractures, occasionally intergrown with goethite. The Pd-O-bearing compounds formed after (1) mertieite-II (Sb content reaches 23 wt.%), (2) keithconnite (variably enriched in Te, up to 7 wt.% and Bi, up to 6 wt.%) and (3) potarite (with high Hg content, up to 35 wt.%). The variably oxidized and hydrated PGM assemblage can be attributed to supergene alteration and small-scale element redistribution under cool climatic conditions with a limited degree of leaching.

Two-dimensional pyrite crystals (40–80 µm wide and 2–3 µm thick) and large thin crusts are reported from the mudstones from the Carboniferous coal basin in Poland. Crystals occur on a flat surface, originally probably a crack in the rock, and are composed of uniform particles (150–200 nm wide). A hypothetical pathway of the formation of 2D pyrite crystals is presented: (1) formation of pyrite particles (or monosulphide precursors) in the suspension introduced onto the surface of the crack, and forming a film with a smooth meniscus at the air/suspension interface on the rock substrate; (2) thinning of the suspension film due to the water loss, increase of particle concentration, and formation of the first monolayers; (3) growth leading to the formation of thin crystals complying with pyrite crystallography.

The octahedral-framework mineral bernalite, Fe(OH)3, provides a rare opportunity to examine directly the effects of a vacant A site upon the physical properties of perovskite-like structures. Here, we report the effect upon compressibility. Bernalite has been reported previously as having space group Immm (Birch et al., 1993), but numerous reflections violating I-centering were observed in the present study. A case is presented for bernalite having orthorhombic space group Pmmn. Lattice parameters were refined using the Le Bail method for a metrically tetragonal cell and their variation with pressure at room temperature was determined from 17 measurements at pressures from 10–4 to 9.3 GPa using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. No discontinuities in the compression curves of lattice parameters were observed. Fitting to a second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation-of-state (KT0' = 4) gives V0 = 438.51±0.06 Å3 and KT0 = 78.2±0.4 GPa. Second-order fits of (a/a0)3 and (c/c0)3 give elastic moduli KT0a = 82.0(6) GPa and KT0c = 71.6(4) GPa: the shorter cation–cation distance is the more compressible. These values are very close to those of stottite, FeGe(OH)6, which has tilt system a+a+c–. The difference in the elastic moduli KT0a and KT0c of bernalite and their close similarity to the stottite values support the revised Pmmn structure (tilt system a+b+c–) for bernalite proposed here. The compressional anisotropy observed in bernalite may reflect its highly anisotropic and directional H-bonding topology.

The mineral conichalcite from the western part of Bagdad mine, Bagdad, Eureka District, Yavapai County, Arizona, USA has been characterized by electronic, near-infrared (NIR), Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show that the mineral consists of bundles of fibres. Calculations based on the results of the energy dispersive X-ray analyses on a stoichiometric basis show the substitution of arsenate by 12 wt.% of phosphate in the mineral. Raman and IR bands are assigned in terms of the fundamental modes of AsO43− and PO43− molecules and are related to the mineral structure. Near-IR reflectance spectroscopy shows the presence of adsorbed water and hydroxyl units in the mineral. The Cu(II) coordination polyhedron in conichalcite can have at best pseudo-tetragonal geometry. The crystal field and tetragonal field parameters of the Cu(II) complex were calculated and found to agree well with the values reported for known tetragonal distortion octahedral complexes.

Naldrettite, Pd2Sb, is a new intermetallic mineral discovered in the Mesamax Northwest deposit, Cape Smith fold belt, Ungava region, northern Québec. It is associated with monoclinic pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, cobaltite, clinochlore, magnetite, sudburyite (PdSb), electrum and altaite. Other rarer associated minerals include a second new mineral (ungavaite, Pd4Sb3), sperrylite (PtAs2), michenerite (PdBiTe), petzite (Ag3AuTe4) and hessite (Ag2Te). Naldrettite occurs as anhedral grains, which are commonly attached or moulded to sulphide minerals, and also associated with clinochlore. Grains of naldrettite vary in size (equivalent circle diameter) from ~10 to 239 μm, with an average of 74.4 mm (n = 632). Cleavage was not observed and fracture is irregular. The mineral has a mean micro-indentation hardness of 393 kg/mm2. It is distinctly anisotropic, non-pleochroic, has weak bireflectance, and does not exhibit discernible internal reflections. Some grains display evidence of strain-induced polysynthetic twinning. Naldrettite appears bright creamy white in association with pentlandite, pyrrhotite, clinochlore and chalcopyrite. Reflectance values in air (and in oil) for R1 and R2 are: 49.0, 50.9 (35.9, 37.6) at 470 nm, 53.2, 55.1 (40.3, 42.1) at 546 nm, 55.4, 57.5 (42.5, 44.3) at 589 nm and 58.5, 60.1 (45.4, 47.2) at 650 nm. The average of 69 electron-microprobe analyses on 19 particles gives: Pd 63.49, Fe 0.11, Sb 35.75, As 0.31, and S 0.02, total 99.68 wt.%, corresponding to (Pd1.995Fe0.007)2.002(Sb0.982AS0.014S0.002)0.998. The mineral is orthorhombic, space group Cmc21, a 3.3906(1), b 17.5551(5), c 6.957(2) Å , V 414.097(3) Å3, Z = 8. Dcalc is 10.694(1) g/cm3. The six strongest lines in the X-ray powder-diffraction pattern [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 2.2454(100)(132), 2.0567(52)(043), 2.0009(40)(152), 1.2842(42)(115), 1.2122(50)(204) and 0.8584(56)(1.17.4).

The basis for an ecological risk assessment based on meeting the needs of recent UK and EU legislation is described. The background to the framework and the legislative driver and relevant definitions of harm are provided, prior to an overview of the proposed ecological risk assessment process, which has been broken down into a Tiered approach. Tier 0 requires the establishment of a conceptual site model, where potential contaminant-pathway-receptor linkages are sought and, assuming they are identified, lead on to higher Tier assessments. Tier 1 relies largely on chemical analysis of soil contaminant levels and comparison with soil quality guideline values to assess the likelihood of harm. In some cases biological screening assays may also be undertaken within this Tier. Based on a weight of evidence approach, should data from Tier 1 indicate harm or leave uncertainty, then Tier 2 biological testing is undertaken using assays relevant to the site of interest. In situations where harm is identified under Tier 2 then Tier 3 is reserved for establishing the extent of harm within the ecosystem. Finally the use of the 'weight-of-evidence' approach to generate scientifically robust conclusions regarding the harm (or potential for harm) within the ecosystem is briefly outlined. The framework discussed is currently being adopted by the UK Environment Agency, with implementation expected in 2005. The UK scheme compares favourably with comparative schemes operating in other countries possessing the merits of being iterative, tiered, flexible with agreed exit points subject to satisfying defined criteria and so speeding the decision-making process.

This issue of Mineralogical Magazine is the 5th in a loosely defined series of special thematic issues (or part issues), deriving from conferences organized by the Mineralogical Society. The associated conference was entitled ‘Environmental Mineralogy, Geochemistry and Human Health’ and took place in January 2005, in Bath. A common thread to all these Mineralogical Society conferences has been the role of mineralogy in applied science and technology and particularly in environmental science, focussing on the multidisciplinarity of modern mineralogy; the conferences (and special issues) have been particularly successful in bringing along scientists from outside traditional Mineralogy/Earth Sciences. Notably, the series comes at a time when the popularity of Mineralogy/Geology, but also science in general, is low, and many, particularly young, scientists are seeking to place themselves in a better position in the eye of the public and the media, and often also to find new focus for their research. A primary ambition for the series is thus to demonstrate Mineralogy's extensive outreach and has so far succeeded in giving the scientific community a sense of the wider role mineralogists can play.

This paper describes a vein-shaped graphite occurrence in which, for the first time, the geological, mineralogical and isotopic evidence support its formation by physical remobilization of previously formed syngenetic graphite. The deposit studied is located in the Spanish Central System and it occurs along the contact between a hydrothermal Ag-bearing quartz vein and a graphite-bearing quartzite layer. The characteristics of this occurrence differ from those of fluid-deposited vein-type graphite mineralization in that: (1) graphite flakes are oriented parallel to the vein walls; (2) graphite crystallinity is slightly lower than in the syngenetic precursor (graphite disseminated in the quartzite); and (3) the isotopic signatures of both types of graphite are identical and correspond to biogenic carbon. In addition, the P-T conditions of the hydrothermal Ag-bearing quartz veins in the study area (P <1 kbar, and T up to 360°C) contrast with the high degree of structural order of graphite in the vein. Therefore, physical remobilization of graphite can be regarded as a suitable alternative mechanism to account for some cases of vein-shaped graphite deposits. Such a mechanism would require a previous concentration of disseminated syngenetic graphite promoted, in this case, by the retrograde solubility of quartz. This process would generate monomineralic graphite aggregates enhancing its lubricant properties and permitting graphite to move in the solid state along distances in the range of up to several metres.

Two mixites from Boss Tweed Mine, Tintic District, Juab County, Utah and Tin Stope, Majuba Hill, Pershing County, Nevada, USA, were analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and by Raman spectroscopy. The SEM images show the mixite crystals to be elongated fibres up to 200 μm long and 2 μm wide. Detailed images of the mixite crystals show the mineral to be composed of bundles of fibres. The EDX analyses depend on the crystal studied, though the Majuba mixite gave analyses which matched the formula BiCu6(AsO4)3(OH)6.3H2O. Raman bands observed in the 880–910 cm−1 and 867–870 cm−1 regions are assigned to the AsO-stretching vibrations of (HAsO4)2− and (H2AsO4)− units, whilst bands at 803 and 833 cm−1 are assigned to the stretching vibrations of uncomplexed (AsO4)3- units. Intense bands observed at 473.7 and 475.4 cm−1 are assigned to the v4 bending mode of AsO4 units. Bands observed at 386.5, 395.3 and 423.1 cm−1 are assigned to the v2 bending modes of the HAsO4 (434 and 400 cm−1) and the AsO4 groups (324 cm−1). Raman spectroscopy lends itself to the identification of minerals on host matrices and is especially useful for the identification of mixites.
