Atomic force microscopy has been used to determine more precisely the mechanism of the initial stages of dolomite dissolution. Analysis of outflow solutions initially shows fluctuations of both Ca and Mg release with concentrations of Ca >> Mg. The dolomite surface dissolves congruently in the presence of slightly acidified water as confirmed by the regular spreading of characteristic rhombohedral etch pits. Direct in situ observations show that a new phase precipitates on the dissolving surface simultaneously. As the Ca and Mg release decreases with time, the precipitated phase can be seen to spread across the dolomite surface. These observations indicate that the apparent incongruent dissolution of dolomite is a two-step process involving stoichiometric dissolution with the release of Ca, Mg and CO3 ions to solution at the mineral–fluid interface coupled with precipitation of a new Mg-carbonate phase. The coupled element release confirms the interface-coupled dissolutionprecipitation mechanism.

Cerianite-(Ce), ideally CeO2, occurs as rounded grains up to 5 μm across in a block of highly altered calcite carbonatite lava from the Kerimasi volcano, and as euhedral crystals up to 200 μm across in carbonatite-derived eluvial deposits in the Kisete and Loluni explosion craters in the Gregory Rift, northern Tanzania. X-ray powder diffraction data (a = 5.434(5) Å) and Raman spectroscopy (minor vibration modes at 184 and 571 cm—1 in addition to a strong signal at 449 cm—1) suggest the presence of essential amounts of large cations and oxygen vacancies in the Kisete material. Microprobe analyses reveal that the mineral contains both light and heavy trivalent rare earth elements (REE) (7.9-15.5 wt.% LREE2O3 and 4.9-9.7 wt.% HREE2O3), and that it is enriched in yttrium (7.1 — 14.5 wt.% Y2O3) and fluorine (2.2—3.5 wt.%). Single-crystal structure refinement of the mineral confirms a fluorite-type structure with a cation—anion distance of 2.3471(6) Å. The cerianite-(Ce) is considered to be a late-stage secondary mineral in the carbonatitic rocks.

Ca-poor and typically Na-rich feldspar megacrysts are common associates of spinel lherzolitic and pyroxenitic xenoliths in Scottish alkalic basalts. Associated megacrysts and composite megacrysts and salic xenoliths include apatite, magnetite, zircon, biotite, Fe-rich pyroxene(s) and corundum. The salic xenoliths and related megacrysts are referred to collectively as the ‘anorthoclasite suite': the majority of the samples are inferred to derive from the disaggregation of coarse-grained, typically Na-rich, syenitic protoliths at depth. Rare occurrences of euhedral anorthoclase megacrysts, together with zircon dating, imply that the suite crystallized at, or very shortly before, their entrainment by the basaltic host magmas. Some evidence suggests that the anorthoclasite suite protoliths lie within ultramafic (pyroxenitic) domains in the deep crust. The latter are inferred to be pegmatites, crystallized from carbonated trachytic magmas with widely variable Ca, Na, K, Ba and trace-element contents, and to have ranged from metaluminous to peraluminous. Crystal zonation and resorption textures within the salic xenoliths imply that the crystallization of the parent magmas was complex. Confirmation of this comes from cathodoluminescence studies of the feldspars showing that early ('primary’) anorthoclases and potassian albites exhibit partial replacement by a more potassic feldspar. A third generation of potassic feldspar (enriched in an assortment of trace elements and deduced to have crystallized from a carbonated high-K melt) forms transecting zoned veins in which carbonate fills the axial zone.

Whereas most of the anorthoclasite suite materials are inferred to have grown from metaluminous magmas, the occurrence of magmatic corundum in salic xenoliths indicates crystallization from magmas that were peraluminous. The corundum-bearing samples also contain Nb-rich oxide minerals and their associated feldspars have the highest rare-earth element (REE)contents. Accordingly, the peraluminous trachyte magmas are deduced to have been specifically enriched in high field-strength trace elements. It is proposed that formation of the anorthoclasite suite protoliths is a phenomenon closely related to that of salic glass ‘pockets', well known from spinel lherzolite xenoliths around the world. Not only are there compositional affinities, but both sets of phenomena appear to have closely pre-empted the ascent of alkali basalt (host) magmas. We propose that the two sets of phenomena are linked and that the anorthoclasite suite derived from coarse-grained sheets, generated by the aggregation of salic melt fractions rising from the shallow mantle and heralding the onset of basaltic magmatism.

Despite the growing geological evidence that fluid boiling and vapour-liquid separation affect the distribution of metals in magmatic-hydrothermal systems significantly, there are few experimental data on the chemical status and partitioning of metals in the vapour and liquid phases. Here we report on an in situ measurement, using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, of antimony speciation and partitioning in the system Sb2O3-H2O-NaCl-HCl at 400°C and pressures 270—300 bar corresponding to the vapour-liquid equilibrium. Experiments were performed using a spectroscopic cell which allows simultaneous determination of the total concentration and atomic environment of the absorbing element (Sb) in each phase. Results show that quantitative vapour-brine separation of a supercritical aqueous salt fluid can be achieved by a controlled decompression and monitoring the X-ray absorbance of the fluid phase. Antimony concentrations in equilibrium with Sb2O3 (cubic, senarmontite) in the coexisting vapour and liquid phases and corresponding SbIII vapour-liquid partitioning coefficients are in agreement with recent data obtained using batch-reactor solubility techniques. The XAFS spectra analysis shows that hydroxy-chloride complexes, probably Sb(OH)2Cl0, are dominant both in the vapour and liquid phase in a salt-water system at acidic conditions. This first in situ XAFS study of element fractionation between coexisting volatile and dense phases opens new possibilities for systematic investigations of vapour-brine and fluid-melt immiscibility phenomena, avoiding many experimental artifacts common in less direct techniques.

Sodic pyroxene is reported from an Ordovician metatrachyte of the Kaczawa Mountains, SW Poland. Its composition ranges from Jd0.98Ae0.02 to Jd0.15Ae0.85. Relict jadeite and phengite (up to 3.75 Si atoms per fomula unit) belong to the peak-pressure assemblage of an early HP-LT event. Later greenschist-facies stages are represented by riebeckite, biotite, chlorite, low-Si potassic white mica and actinolite. P-T pseudosections calculated for the range 200–450°C, 3–13 kbar allow evaluation of the conditions of formation of jadeite in the metatrachyte and derivaton of a P-T path. Considering the position of prograde, peak and retrograde metamorphic assemblages and respective mineral compositions, we can derive the following equilibration stages: 8.5±0.5 kbar, 270±20°C for the pressure maximum, 6.0±1.0 kbar, 310±20°C for the temperature maximum and 3.5±0.5 kbar, 280±20°C as well as <3.5 kbar, <280°C for the retrograde stages.

The metamorphic gradient for the peak-pressure is estimated at ∼10°C/km, which is typical of a subduction setting involving subducted continental crust, in particular of an exhumation channel within a collision zone of a microplate. Based on earlier structural observations, the ESE-oriented subduction in the NE Bohemian Massif was confined with WNW thrusting and followed by extension and ESE backward normal faulting during Devonian–Early Carboniferous times.

Trace mineral assemblages in the bornite- and chalcopyrite-rich Cu-Fe zone of the Ocna de Fier-Dognecea skarn deposits, Banat, SW Romania provide additional constraints on the genesis of this classic zoned skarn system. Observed assemblages substantiate a model, in which the Cu-Fe zone forms the proximal fluid-plume root of the system. Observed trace mineral assemblages in the magnesian forsterite-bearing skarns crystallized at ~650°C in a volatile-rich environment, evidenced by widespread phlogopite, ludwigite, valleriite and apatite. The entire assemblage thus belongs to the initial stage of skarn formation. Prolonged cooling led to sequential exsolution of trace mineral phases from bornite and chalcopyrite during the retrograde stage, although still at temperatures in excess of 500°C. Bornite is typified by the abundance of exsolved phases along cleavage planes and along crystal margins, notably chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, but also cobalt pentlandite, carrollite, wittichenite, galena, mawsonite, silver and electrum. Chalcopyrite hosts cobalt pentlandite, carrollite, wittichenite, galena and a sequence of Se- and Te-bearing minerals (kawazulite, bohdanowiczite, hessite, volynskite), along, although not restricted to, grain margins. The assemblage bornite-chalcopyrite-magnetite, with the trace phases, cobalt pentlandite, carrollite, wittichenite and various Se- and Te-bearing minerals represents a characteristic assemblage common to a disparate range of deposits formed at temperatures in excess of 500°C in the presence of volatiles and typified by relatively low fS2 fluids.

The Saghro Cenozoic lavas form a bimodal suite of nephelinites (with carbonatite xenoliths) and phonolites emplaced in the Anti-Atlas belt of Morocco. Despite the paucity of samples with intermediate composition between the two main types of lava (only one phonotephrite flow is reported in this area), whole-rock major element modelling shows that the two main lithologies can be linked by fractional crystallization. The most primitive modelled cumulates are calcite-bearing olivine clinopyroxenites, whereas the final stages of differentiation are characterized by the formation of nepheline-syenite cumulates. This evolution trend is classically observed in plutonic alkaline massifs associated with carbonatites. Late-stage evolution is responsible for the crystallization of hainite- and delhayelite-bearing microdomains, for the transformation of aegirine-augite into aegirine (or augite into aegirine-augite), and for the crystallization of lorenzenite and a eudialyte-group mineral as replacement products of titanite. These phases were probably formed, either by crystallization from late residual peralkaline melts, or by reaction of pre-existing minerals with such melt, or hydrothermal peralkaline fluid.

Clay-like, hydrous nickel silicates from Niquelandia, Goias, Brazil, and from Jacupiranga, São Paulo, Brazil, arc examined by X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis, and thermogravimetric methods. The nickel silicates from Niquelandia are ferric iron montmorillonites, with nickel in the octahedral positions and, to a lesser extent, in interlayer positions. The chemical compositions of samples dried at 110°C average (Mg0.15Ni0.08Ca0.015Na0.005) (Fe0.92IIIFe0.025IIAl0.55Mg0.37Ni0.22) (Si3.88Al0.12)O10(OH)2(H2O)0.93. The layer charge originates largely in the octahedral sheet. The cation-exchange capacities average 107 me/100 g clay (110°C). These minerals differ from non-tronites, in which the layer charge originates mainly in the tetrahedral sheets.

The nickel silicates from Jacupiranga resemble chlorites, with a non-expanding basal spacing of 14·2-14·3 Å. The better crystalline forms give X-ray data in good agreement with a la polytype structure, which is consistent with their formation by low-temperature processes. Chemical formulae derived on the basis of O10(OH)8 give an average of 5·47 cations in octahedral positions. Thermogravimetric measurements show up to 4% H2O lost between 110 and 500 °C. These results suggest a partial vermiculitization of the interlayer sheets. A new method of calculating a structural formula is developed that gives an interlayer composition of the form R1.75(OH)3.75(H2O)1.14, with (OH + H2O)/R = 2·80, which approaches the ratio for a dioctahedral sheet structure.

A comparison of these defect chlorites with available data on schuchardtites shows many similarities; however, schuchardtite is not yet sufficiently well denned for the Jacupiranga chlorites to be given this name.

Studies of the weathering of platinum-group minerals in natural deposits have indicated that the platinum-group elements (PGE) can be mobilized under appropriate conditions and have sufficient solubility to move into solution. Although inorganic chemistry provides feasible mechanisms under the extreme conditions encountered in laterites it appears likely that PGE-organic complexes offer a more convincing explanation of the apparent solubility. Experimental work undertaken to illustrate the organic processes and the reaction timescale examined various reactions including those between Pt and Pd foils and humic and fulvic acid solutions. These reactions appear pertinent to those that may occur between the PGE particles ejected by vehicle exhaust catalysts and the natural environment.

The experimental work produced up to 195 μ/l Pt and 102 μ/l Pd in humic acid solutions exposed to the metal foils for about a year at room temperature. The experimental conditions can be compared to those encountered in roadside drainage supplied with PGE particles and decaying vegetation.

Consideration of the possible health effects of the PGE from the particles ejected by vehicle exhaust catalysts has centred on inhalation of the particles or absorption through the skin. Intake from drinking water or from food produced using PGE-bearing water should now also be investigated. Due to the variety of organic compounds produced by decaying vegetation the identity of the PGE-organic products is not yet known so their toxicity cannot be estimated.

Detailed analysis of the crystal structures of minerals and inorganic compounds containing oxocentred [OCu4] tetrahedra reveals the following principle for relationships between oxocentred tetrahedra and tetrahedral oxyanions (Tn+O4)−(8−n) with T = S6+ or V5+, or triangular pyramidal oxyanions (SeO3)2− (which may be considered as (SeO3E)2− tetrahedra assuming the lone pair E of selenium to be a fourth ligand): (Tn+O4)−(8−n) tetrahedra are ‘attached’ to the oxocentred tetrahedra so that their grounds (O-O-O and Cu-Cu-Cu) are parallel to each other and the mutual orientation is regular (O corners are exactly under Cu corners). We propose to describe these relationships as ‘face-to-face’, meaning that the oxocentred and cation-centred tetrahedra ‘meet’ along their ‘whole’ triangular faces. Geometric characteristics of ‘face-to-face’ relationships are discussed.

The main minerals (garnet, pyroxene, hornblende, and scapolite) in certain Dahomeyan (Archaean) garnet-hornblende-pyroxene-scapolite gneisses from Ghana have been separated and analysed. Both the garnet and the pyroxene show marked eclogitic affinities, and the rocks are considered to occupy a transitional position between the amphibolite and eclogite facies. The scapolite is a sulphatic variety containing more than 4 % SO3 and is believed to be a product of autometasomatism. A revised scheme for the distribution of mineral facies within the temperature-pressure field of metamorphism is proposed.

The Cape Cross–Uis pegmatite belt, Damara Orogen, north-central Namibia hosts multiple Ta–Nb- and Sn-oxide-bearing pegmatites. Columbite-group minerals, tapiolite, cassiterite and minor ixiolite and wodginite occur in abundance within pegmatites and display various compositional and internal structural mineralogical variations. Ta–Nb oxides display various zonation patterns indicative of multiple crystallisation phases, whereas cassiterite is dominantly homogeneous with minor euhedral columbite-group mineral inclusions. Ta–Nb oxides are mostly rich in Fe, with fractionation patterns in the columbite quadrilateral being sub parallel to the Ta/(Ta + Nb) axis; increasing Ta/(Ta + Nb) with little change in Mn/(Mn + Fe), which is consistent with classical trends in beryl-to-spodumene rare-element pegmatites. In addition, these trends suggest that co-crystallising minerals compete with Ta–Nb oxides for elements such as Mn, preventing Ta–Nb oxides from attaining Mn-rich compositions during the fractionation process. Cassiterite shows similar fractionation patterns with Fe > Mn and notable increases in the Ta content. Minor-element substitution in Ta–Nb oxides shows sharp decreases with increasing fractionation supporting the hypothesis that newly stabilised co-occurring minerals compete with columbite-group minerals for certain elements. Tapiolite shows the same minor-element trend, however, only for Sn and Ti suggesting cassiterite was a dominant competing mineral. Although crystallisation of Ta–Nb oxides from an aqueous fluid at the late-stages of pegmatite genesis is highly debated, significantly elevated Ta contents in metasomatised country rock, compared to unaltered country rock, may give new insight, suggesting that Ta may indeed partition into, and be transported by, an exsolved aqueous fluid. However, further studies of the country rock metasomatic contacts are required as currently the dataset is limited. The degree of fractionation as depicted by Ta–Nb and Sn oxides within pegmatites, indicate that a zonation from primitive to evolved pegmatites surrounding granites is not present and that pegmatites are probably not related to granites in the typical parent–daughter relationship.

A number of minerals and residual glasses from absarokites, shoshonites, and latites have been analysed by electron probe.

Clinopyroxenes show very little iron-enrichment and these rocks are thus distinguished from tholeiites and alkali basalts.

Glasses from this group are also distinct from tholeiites and alkali basalts and occupy a separate field on a CaO-Na2O-K2O diagram.

A trachyte plug near Jos contains a suite of inclusions, commonly rounded and of large size, including olivine nodules, pyroxenites, and a variety of basic to intermediate plutonic rocks, as well as albite megacrysts.

The olivine nodules are typical of those found elsewhere in alkaline basic lavas and widely interpreted as upper mantle fragments. Most of the other inclusions contain evidence of crystallization at high pressures, even the syenites, which are interpreted as plutonic equivalents of the trachyte; for the feldspar in them is sanidine-microperthite.

Discovery of this inclusion assemblage in a trachyte provides further support for the thesis that alkaline salic lavas can be generated at sub-crustal depths, by partial melting beneath domically uplifted continental shield areas (Bailey, 1964).

The Nigerian Cenozoic volcanic province lies in an area of regional uplift, and is characterized by scattered small volcanic centres rather than by major eruptive foci. High pressure inclusions are being found at an increasing proportion of these centres, suggesting that the magmas rose directly and rapidly to the surface from the upper mantle levels at which they were all (including the trachyte) generated.

Demicheleite-(I), ideally BiSI, is the iodine-dominant analogue of demicheleite-(Br) and demicheleite-(Cl). It was found in an active medium-temperature intracrateric fumarole at La Fossa crater, Vulcano Island, Aeolian archipelago, Sicily, Italy. The mineral is the first bismuth sulphoiodide so far discovered in a wholly natural environment, and corresponds to the already known synthetic compound. It occurs as acicular to stout, translucent crystals up to 0.25 mm long in an altered pyroclastic breccia, together with demicheleite-(Br), bismoclite, bismuthinite, godovikovite, panichiite, aiolosite, brontesite, adranosite and other new phases under study. The colour is dark red to black, the lustre submetallic. The unit cell is orthorhombic, space group Pnam, with a = 8.4501(7) Å, b = 10.1470(9) Å , c = 4.1389(4) Å , V = 354.88(4) Å3, and Z = 4. The crystal habit is prismatic, with the main forms {110} and {111} inferred from analogy with demicheleite-(Br). Twinning was not observed. The strongest 6 lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [dobs.(Å) (I/I0) (hkl)] are: 6.490 (100) (110); 4.346 (94) (120); 3.896 (90) (210); 2.709 (60) (310); 2.161 (38) (330); 3.243 (22) (220). The chemical analysis obtained by WDS electron microprobe gave: Bi 58.32, S 9.43, I 23.69, Br 5.66, Cl 1.01, totalling 98.11 wt.%, corresponding to an empirical formula (based on 3 a.p.f.u.) of: Bi0.97S1.03(I0.65Br0.25Cl0.10)Σ1.00. The unit-cell data are close to those of the synthetic compound, whose crystal structure is already known. The calculated density is 6.411 g cm–3.

Sphalerite is the main source of In – a ‘critical’ metal widely used in high-tech electronics. In this mineral the concentration of In is commonly correlated directly with Cu content. Here we use X-ray absorption spectroscopy of synthetic compounds and natural crystals in order to investigate the substitution mechanisms in sphalerites where In is present, together with the group 11 metals. All the admixtures (Au, Cu, In) are distributed homogeneously within the sphalerite matrix, but their structural and chemical states are different. In all the samples investigated In3+ replaces Zn in the structure of sphalerite. The In ligand distance increases by 0.12 Å and 0.09–0.10 Å for the 1st and 2nd coordination shells, respectively, in comparison with pure sphalerite. The In–S distance in the 3rd coordination shell is close to the one of pure sphalerite. Gold in synthetic sphalerites is coordinated with sulfur (NS = 2.4–2.5, RAu–S = 2.35 ± 0.01 Å). Our data suggest that at high Au concentrations (0.03–0.5 wt.%) the Au2S clusters predominate, with a small admixture of the Au+ solid solution with an Au–S distance of 2.5 Å. Therefore, the homogeneous character of a trace-element distribution, which is commonly observed in natural sulfides, does not confirm formation of a solid solution. In contrast to Au, the presence of Cu+ with In exists only in the solid-solution state, where it is tetrahedrally coordinated with S atoms at a distance of 2.30 ± 0.03 Å. The distant coordination shells of Cu are disordered. These results demonstrate that the group 11 metals (Cu, Ag and Au) can exist in sphalerite in the metastable solid-solution state. The solid solution forms at high temperature via the charge compensation scheme 2Zn2+↔Me++Me3+. The final state of the trace elements at ambient temperature is governed by the difference in ionic radii with the main component (Zn), and concentration of admixtures.

Polyminerallic, sulphidic mine wastes were treated with KH2PO4-H2O2 solutions to determine whether the formation of solid phosphate coatings inhibits sulphide oxidation and metal and metalloid mobility. The waste rocks were metal (PbZnCu) and metalloid (AsSb) rich and consisted of major quartz, dickite, illite and sulphide minerals (e.g. galena, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, sphalerite, pyrite, arsenopyrite) as well as minor to trace amounts of pre- and post-mining oxidation products (e.g. oxides, hydroxides, arsenates and sulphates). Scanning electron microscopy observations of the waste material treated with KH2PO4-H2O2 solutions showed that metal, metal-alkali and alkali phosphate precipitates formed and coatings developed on all sulphides (with the exception of tetrahedrite). The abundance of phosphate phases was dependant on the availability of metal and alkali cations in solution. In turn, the release of cations was dependent on the amount of sulphide oxidation induced during the experiment or the presence of soluble oxidation products. Lead and to a lesser degree Cu and Zn phosphate coatings remained stable during H2O2 leaching, preventing acid generation and metal release. In contrast, the lack of phosphate coating on tetrahedrite and arsenopyrite allowed oxidation and leaching of As and Sb to proceed and mobilized As and Sb did not form phosphate phases. As a result, As and Sb displayed the greatest release from the coated waste. Thus, the application of KH2PO4-H2O2 solutions to partly oxidized, polyminerallic mine wastes suppresses sulphide oxidation and is most effective in inhibiting Pb (Cu and Zn) release. However, the technique appears ineffective in preventing metalloid (As, Sb) leaching from tetrahedrite- and arsenopyrite-bearing wastes.

Mcalpineite, ideally Cu3TeO6·H2O, occurs as isolated 0.5 mm-sized emerald green cryptocrystalline crusts on white quartz at the long-abandoned McAlpine mine, Tuolumne County, California, U.S.A. Associated nonmetallic phases are muscovite (mariposite), calcite, goethite, hematite, chlorargyrite, choloalite, keystoneite, mimetite, malachite, azurite, annabergite and a host of unidentified crusts, both crystalline and amorphous. Associated metallic minerals include pyrite, acanthite, hessite, electrum, altaite, native silver, galena, pyrargyrite, sphalerite and owyheeite. The mineral has also been identified at the Centennial Eureka mine, Juab County, Utah, U.S.A., where it occurs as interstitial olive-green coatings and as millimetre-sized dark green-black cryptocrystalline nodules lining drusy quartz vugs. Associated minerals are xocomecatlite, hinsdalite-svanbergite, goethite and several new species including two hydrated copper tellurates, a hydrated copper-zinc tellurate/tellurite, and a hydrated copper-zinc tellurate/tellurite-arsenate-chloride. Mcalpineite is cubic, P-lattice (space group unknown), a = 9.555(2) Å, V = 872.4(4) Å. The strongest six lines in the X-ray powder-diffraction pattern [d in Å (I) (hkl)] are: 4.26(40)(210), 2.763(100)(222), 2.384(70)(400), 1.873(40)(431,510), 1.689(80)(440) and 1.440(60)(622). The average of four electron-microprobe analyses (McAlpine mine) is CuO 50.84, NiO 0.17, PbO 4.68, SiO2 0.65, TeO3 39.05, H2O (calc.) [4.51], total [100.00] wt. %. With O = 7, the empirical formula is (Cu2.79Pb0.09Ni0.01)∑2.89(Te0.97Si0.05)∑1.02O5.90·1.10H2O. This gives a calculated density of 6.65. g/cm3 for Z = 8. The average of two electron-microprobe analyses (Centennial Eureka mine) is CuO 51.2, ZnO 3.1, TeO3 39.0, SiO2 0.2, As2O5 0.8, H2O (by CHN elemental analyser) 7, total 101.3 wt. %, leading to the empirical formula (Cu2.56Zn0.15)∑2.71 (Te0.88Si0.02As0.02)∑0.92O5.47·1.53H2O. The infrared absorption spectrum shows definite bands for structural H2O with an O-H stretching frequency centred at 3320 cm−1 and a H-O-H flexing frequency centred at 1600 cm−1. In reflected light Mcalpineite is isotropic, nondescript grey, with ubiquitous brilliant apple to lime green internal reflections. The refractive index calculated from Fresnel equations is 2.01. Measured reflectance values in air and in oil are tabulated. Reflectance study also shows that cryptocrystalline aggregates are composed of micron-sized sheaves of fibrous or prismatic crystals. Other physical properties include: adamantine lustre; light green streak; brittle; uneven fracture; translucent to transparent and nonfluorescent under both long- and short-wave ultraviolet light. The name is for the first known locality, the McAlpine mine.

The Younger Granites of Nigeria contain varied assemblages of iron-rich ferromagnesian minerals in which amphiboles are an important component. Eighteen of these amphiboles (separated from rocks belonging to nine complexes) have been chemically analysed and the results are presented and discussed. The amphiboles are shown to fall into two groups, a lime-alkali group (comprised of ferrohastingsite of general formula NaCa2Fe″4Fe‴Al2Si6O22(OH)2) and an alkali group (of general formula (Na, K, Ca)2.5–3.0(Fe″, Fe‴)5(Al, Si)3O22(OH)2). The alkali amphiboles are characterized by their extremely low magnesia content, by the presence of Li and F (both in significant amounts), and are of specialinterest because of the unusual amount of ZnO they contain. Optical properties of the amphiboles have been determined but it has not been found possible to use these properties to determine accurately the chemical composition of the alkali amphiboles. It is suggested that, according to current classifications of amphiboles, the analysed alkali amphiboles should be called riebeckitic arfvedsonites or arfvedsonites. The relationship between the hastingsites and the alkali amphiboles is not yet clear.

Sulphosalts in the system CuSbS2-CuBiS2 (chalcostibite-emplectite) form a complete solid solution series. Seven compositions with the general formula Cu(SbxBi1–x)S2 have been synthesized using dry methods at 310°C. All members of the series are orthorhombic (space group Pnma) and show smoothly increasing a and b cell parameters with substitution of Bi for Sb; the c cell parameter increases up to 50% CuBiS2 substitution and then becomes constant. DSC experiments on CuBiS2 show an endothermic heat effect (2.45 kJ/mol.) at 472°C due to the breakdown reaction to Cu3BiS3 (wittichenite) plus Bi2S3 (bismuthinite). With the addition of 10% CuSbS2 to CuBiS2, the decomposition temperature increases and the endothermic peak is broadened but the energy remains essentially the same (2.53 kJ/mol.). No evidence of this decomposition was observed when the amount of the CuSbS2 component was >30%. The local structure and co-ordination of Cu in the samples were studied by EXAFS analysis of the Cu-K edge but no significant variation occurs in the local Cu environment. The Debye-Waller factor for the first shell of S atoms surrounding Cu in end member CuSbS2 tends to be slightly smaller than for the intermediate solid solutions, suggesting that the tetrahedral Cu environments in the intermediate composition samples is somewhat more disordered than in the end-member. The low expansion characteristics along c appear to be controlled by the linkages between the (CuS3 + BiS2) sheets perpendicular to c being relatively inflexible.
