In the course of a study of the corrosion products formed by seawater sprayed at a temperature of 85° F. on brass and copper sheets, a pale green compound was isolated which proved on chemical analysis to have the composition Cu2(OH)3Cl. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern of the substance was found on visual comparison to differ from that of atacamite, which has the same chemical composition. The atacamite pattern was obtained from a specimen of the mineral from Moonta, on the u peninsula, South Australia, that had been authenticated by both morphological measurement and optical study; identical patterns were obtained from a number of other specimens labelled atacamite. The pattern of the corrosion product proved to be identical, however, with that of two specimens in the Harvard collection labelled paratacamite. These were labelled as from Remolinos, Vallinar, Chile (no. 97523), and from Sierra Gorda, Chile (no. 82883).

The behaviour of iron in the weathering of biotite in a sedentary soil profile developed on appinite has been investigated using the Msbauer effect. Both Fe2+ and Fe3+ in sites with cis and trans hydroxyl groups were observed at various stages in the weathering sequence. The results indicate that there is little or no ordering of the octahedral cations in the fresh biotite and hydrobiotite, but in the more weathered interstratified vermiculite-chlorite samples Fe3+ concentrates in the more distorted sites. No evidence was obtained for the presence of an anisotropic recoil-free fraction.

Growth twins, parallel growths, and necked crystals are described from zircon populations from granitic gneisses from the Precambrian of SW. Greenland. From observations of the distribution of internal growth zones it is concluded that whereas twinning takes place early in the growth history of elbow twins it can occur at any time during crystallization of the zircon. Parallel growth is attributed to a process of synneusis or attachment of zircons that have initially undergone separate growth histories. This implies that viscosity conditions of the rocks were low enough to permit the movement and collision of growing zircon crystals. The common occurrence of zircons with central constrictions, sometimes superimposed on transverse fractures, in zircon suites from the granitic gneisses is explained in terms of late-stage chemical corrosion accompanied by brittle fracturing.

The Denchai gem sapphire deposits in Phrae Province, northern Thailand are closely associated with late Cenozoic alkaline basaltic rocks. The sapphires occur in alluvial placer deposits in palaeo-channels at shallow depths. Electron microprobe analysis of minor and trace element contents (Fe, Ti, Cr, Ga and V) of the sapphires indicate the following oxide abundances: Fe2O3 (0.32–1.98 wt.%), TiO2 (0.01–0.23 wt.%), Cr2O3 (<0.01 wt.%), Ga2O3 (0.01–0.03 wt.%) and V2O5 (<0.03 wt.%). Optical studies of sapphires revealed three types of primary fluid/melt inclusions. CO2-rich inclusions (Type I) contain three phases (LH2O + LCO2 + V) with the vapour phase comprising <10–15 vol.%. The presence of CO2 was confirmed by microthermometry and laser Raman analysis. Polyphase inclusions (Type II) (vapour + liquid + solid) contain a fluid bubble (20–30 vol.%), an aqueous phase (10–15 vol.%) and several solid phases. Silicate-melt inclusions (Type III) comprise vapour bubbles, silicate glass and solid phases. Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis revealed high concentrations of K (~;4 wt.%) as well as Ca (~;0.5 wt.%), Ti (~;1 wt.%), Fe (~;2 wt.%), Mn (~;0.1 wt.%), V (<0.03 wt.%), Rb (~;70 ppm) and Zr (~;200 ppm) in the silicate glass. The Ga2O3 abundances and Cr2O3/Ga2O3 values (<1) of the sapphires favour their formation by magmatic processes. The presence of CO2-rich fluids and high K concentrations in the silicate melt inclusions link the origin of the Denchai gem sapphires to CO2-rich alkaline magmatism.

Phosphorus contents in cumulus rocks occurring close to the level of apatite appearance in the basic rocks of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa, provide a method of calculating the proportion of intercumulus component in these rocks. Previous experimental studies have accurately constrained the phosphorus content of magmas when apatite becomes stable. The ratio of the phosphorus content in the cumulates immediately below the appearance of apatite to this liquid composition defines the proportion of trapped liquid.

Application of this method to rocks from the uppermost mafic rocks of the Bushveld Complex leads to the conclusion that there is from 1 to 6 per cent intercumulus component. Many of these rocks are multiphase cumulates and in such rocks estimation of intercumulus component from textural criteria is difficult.

If crystals grow In situ on the floor of the magma chamber such small proportions of interstitial component can be produced without appealing to excessive diffusion and circulation of magma through an unconsolidated crystal pile. The geometry of the intrusion as well as its size might have a major influence on the proportion of the liquid ultimately solidifying within a cumulus rock.

Microprobe analyses of the halogen contents of apatites from two samples of amphibolite-facies schist from Connemara, Ireland, have been used to calculate the fugacity ratios fHCl/fH2O and fHF/fH2O using the experimental data of Korzhinskiy. The results imply fugacities for both acids in the range 0.03 to 0.1 bars, but whereas for the lower grade rock fHF > fHCl, the migmatitic sample gives fHF⋍fHCl. An independent estimate of fHF/fH2O from the biotite composition in one sample is in acceptable agreement with the result obtained from apatite.

Natrocarbonatite lavas erupted from hornitos T37B and T49B at Oldoinyo Lengai (Tanzania) during 23–30 July, 2000 are unusual in containing sylvite and fluorite microcrysts together with fluorite-nyerereite intergrowths. The latter are relatively coarse grained and exhibit granular textures indicative of slow crystallization rates relative to those of their host subaerial lavas. Fluorite microcrysts are considered to be derived by the fragmentation of the fluorite-nyerereite clasts. Sylvite microcrysts contain inclusions of ferroan alabandite [(Mn0.67-0.71Fe0.33-0.29)S] and are poor in Na (1.9–7.7 wt.% Na; 6.1–23.4 mol.% NaCl). Intergrowth and microcrystal fluorite contains 1–3.5 wt.% Sr. Intergrowth nyerereite has a composition similar to that occurring as bona fide phenocrysts. The groundmass of lava erupted from hornito T37B contains nyerereite microphenocrysts (4–8 wt.% BaO) that are epitaxially mantled by barian nyerereite (12–20 wt.% BaO). The latter are compositionally and texturally distinct from the groundmass phase X, which is considered to be a burbankite-group mineral. The fluorite-nyerereite clasts are considered to be derived from the magma chamber underlying hornitos T37B and T49B, and thus representative of some of the products of crystallization of natrocarbonatite magma under hypabyssal conditions. The origins of the sylvite microcrysts cannot, as yet, be determined.

Green biotite-like material occurring in Haast Schist at Brighton, eastern Otago, consists of biotite and a kaolin-group mineral interlayered on a 1 μm scale. Electron probe analyses of composite grains show K2O contents of 4.4 to 8.5 wt.%, in part reflecting the kaolin content, and in part, leaching of K+ ions. Phengitic muscovite shows similar but less extreme effects. Kaolin, siderite, calcite, and titanium oxides have formed in the rock during hydrothermal alteration of epidote, sphene, and biotite by carbonated waters. Potassium leaching due to surficial weathering processes appears to be widespread in biotites from the schists of eastern Otago, and biotites (hydrobiotites?) with K2O as low as 4 wt. % are reported. Similar material with 0.8 to 2.4% K2O and with Na2O about 1% is thought to be more highly degraded biotite. Microprobe analyses of kaolin and chlorites from associated rocks are given in addition to those of ‘biotite’ and phengitic muscovite. Analyses of sheet biotite and sheet muscovite from the Mataketake Range pegmatites in the highest grade parts of the Haast Schist terrane are presented for comparison. The study shows that biotite is more widespread in eastern Otago than was previously thought, and that almandine-rich garnet is not confirmed down-grade of the first appearance of biotite in eastern Otago.

The Woodbine meteorite, ploughed up in Illinois in 1953, is a fine octahedrite with numerous inclusions of silicate minerals. The minerals present include kamacite, taenite, troilite, schreibersite, orthopyroxene (Fs6), diopside, olivine (Fa4), plagioclase (An9), and graphite. The chemical analysis is: Fe 73·06, Ni 9·08, Co 0·15, P 0·47, C 0·21, FeS 1·65, SiO2 8·55, TiO2 0·02, Al2O3 0·53, Cr2O3 0·03, FeO 0·49, MnO 0·03, MgO 5·19, CaO 0·34, Na2O 0·29, K2O 0·02, sum 100·11. Woodbine is compared with other meteorites of similar composition. The silicate material has chondritic composition, and is quite different from the silicate material of the mesosiderites, with which some of these meteorites have been classed.

The structure refinement of a hastingsite (Cl 0.91 p.f .u.) from West Ongul Island, Ltitzow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica, has been carried out in order to characterise the effect of CI on the crystal structure. The composition of the Cl-rich hastingsite is K0.69Na0.26Ca1.99Mg1.09Fe2+2.71Fe3+0.92Mn0.04Ti0.10−Al2.31Si5.83O22OH0.99Cl0.91F0.10 with unit cell parameters a 9.962(3), b 18.283(7), c 5.572(1) Å and β 104.87(3)°.

In the Cl-rich hastingsite, A1, Fe3+ and Ti occupy only the M(2) site, and Fe2+ strongly prefers the M(1) and M(3) sites to the M(2) site with respect to Mg. The Mg-Fe2+ distribution suggests that the Mg-CI avoidance is realised in the intracrystalline exchange reaction among the octahedral sites in the Cl-rich hastingsite. The individual position of CI and OH was refined and the effective ionic radius of Cl in fourfold coordination is determined as 1.79 Å. Substitution of Cl for OH expands the sizes of the M(1) and M(3) sites and extends the double chains in comparison with hydroxy calcic amphiboles. Cl especially, is close to the 0(6) and 0(7) oxygens beyond the minimum distance calculated from effective ionic radii. Therefore, the Cl-rich hastingsite is considered to be deformed locally by Cl.

The Strathy complex is a fault-bounded block of the sub-Moine succession basement characterized by a marked aeromagnetic anomaly. XRF analyses of 94 rocks for 26 elements are used to illustrate the geochemistry of the complex. It comprises siliceous grey gneisses (50 analyses), subordinate amphibolite (13 analyses), hornblende gneiss (13 analyses), and ultramafites (1 analysis), with scapolite-diopside marble and calc-silicate rocks (3 analyses from Strathy, 14 analyses of other calc-silicates). Geochemically the Strathy gneisses are quite distinct from the adjacent Moine lithologies, being unusually low in K, Rb, La, and Ce, and high in SiO2 and Na2O, whilst differences in immobile elements such as Ti and Zr preclude their derivation from a Moine source. The Strathy complex is unlike other high-grade gneiss terrains and apparently acquired its characteristic geochemical features by the removal of an anatectic melt under amphibolite-facies conditions leaving a refractory residue of quartz, plagioclase, Ca-poor amphibole, and garnet ± staurolite in siliceous gneisses. Subsequent influx of water, retrogression to biotite-bearing assemblages, production of sillimanite, and anateclic trondhjemitic melts took place during the maximum metamorphism of the surrounding Moine. The complex is considered to have originated as a dacitic supracrustal sequence with minor sediments and mafic-ultramafic intrusives. REE and Y abundances suggest a Proterozoic age, possibly as part of the Laxfordian cycle.

The crystal morphology of plagioclase feldspar in seven mafic rocks has been studied by isothermal supercooling and constant rate cooling experiments at 1 atmosphere using the ‘wire-loop’ suspension method. There is a systematic variation in crystal morphology with supercooling (−ΔT), but the transitions between the different morphologies are gradual, and consecutive forms sometimes occur together. As −ΔT increases, the sequence of plagioclase morphology is generally laths → skeletal forms → fan spherulites. During isothermal supercooling the position of the plagioclase morphological fields is shown to be dependent on −ΔT, superheating (+ΔT), and also on time to a greater or lesser degree. Variations in melt composition and viscosity affect the position and slope of the boundaries of the fields. In the constant rate cooling experiments, the morphological type is dependent on the cooling rate and can be used to a limited extent as an indicator of the range of supercooling over which the first crystals nucleated and grew.

The oxygen and hydrogen isotope composition of hydrothermal fluids associated with the Variscan granites of southwest England has been inferred from analysis of various silicate minerals (predominantly quartz) and by direct analysis of fluid inclusions within quartz and fluorite. These data have been combined with the results of a fluid inclusion study to develop a model for the origin and evolution of hydrothermal fluids in the region. Magmatic fluids expelled from the granites had compositions in the range δD = −65 to −15‰, and δ18O = 9 to 13‰. Respective temperature, salinity, fluid δD, and fluid δ18O values for the (i) early Sn-W mineralization, (ii) later Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide mineralization, and (iii) latest ‘crosscourse’ Pb-Zn-F mineralization are: (i) 230–400 °C, 5–15 wt.% NaCl equiv., −39 to −16‰, and 7.0 to 11.2‰, (ii) 220–300 °C mostly 2–8 wt.% NaCl equiv., −41 to −9‰, and 2.3 to 8.1‰, and (iii) 110–150 °C 22–26 wt.% NaCl equiv., −45 to +2‰, and −1.8 to +5.5‰. These data highlight the important role of both magmatic fluids exsolved from the crystallizing granite, and basinal brines circulating within restricted fracture systems.

Carbonatite magmas are considered to be ultimately derived from mantle sources, which may include lithospheric and asthenospheric reservoirs. Isotopic studies of carbonatite magmatism around the globe have typically suggested that more than one source needs to be invoked for generation of the parental melts to carbonatites, often involving the interaction of asthenosphere and lithosphere.

In the rift-related, Proterozoic Gardar Igneous Province of SW Greenland, carbonatite occurs as dykes within the Igaliko Nepheline Syenite Complex, as eruptive rocks and diatremes at Qassiarsuk, as a late plug associated with nepheline syenite at Grønnedal-Íka, and as small bodies associated with ultramafic lamprophyre dykes. The well-known cryolite deposit at Ivittuut was also rich in magmatic carbonate. The carbonatites are derived from the mantle with relatively little crustal contamination, and therefore should provide important information about the mantle sources of Gardar magmas. In particular, they are found intruded both into Archaean and Proterozoic crust, and hence provide a test for the involvement of lithospheric mantle.

A synthesis of new and previously published major and trace element, Sr, Nd, C and O isotope data for carbonatites and associated lamprophyres from the Gardar Province is presented. The majority of Gardar carbonatites and lamprophyres have consistent geochemical and isotopic signatures that are similar to those typically found in ocean island basalts. The geochemical characteristics of the two suites of magmas are similar enough to suggest that they were derived from the same mantle source. C and O isotope data are also consistent with a mantle derivation for the carbonatite magmas, and support the theory of a cogenetic origin for the carbonatites and the lamprophyres. The differences between the carbonatites and lamprophyres are considered to represent differing degrees of partial melting of a similar source.We suggest that the ultimate source of these magmas is the asthenospheric mantle, since there is no geochemical or isotopic evidence for their having been derived directly from ancient, enriched sub-continental lithospheric mantle. However, it is likely that the magmas actually formed through a two-stage process, with small-degree volatile-rich partial melts rising from the asthenospheric mantle and being ‘frozen in’ as metasomites, which were then rapidly remobilized during Gardar rifting.

The Pandé massif is a small (4.9×63.4 km) subvolcanic complex of the Cameroon Line striking W – E and intrudes a Panafrican granite basement. It comprises a syenite-granite suite, where coarse- to finegrained syenites are predominant and the granites are the product of residual melt after syenite crystallization, and two volcanic (trachyte-rhyolite and trachyte) sequences. Amphibole and pyroxene are the dominant mafic silicates, the first occurring mainly in rhyolites and coarse- to medium-grained syenites, and the second, principally in all syenites, trachytes and granites. Rare biotite flakes are encountered in the coarse-grained or alkaline syenites and fayalite rimmed with oxides occurs in trachyte from the first volcanic sequence (T1). Apatite and zircon are common accessories, whereas some titanite occurs in the medium-grained syenites. The plutonic rocks are drusy, intrude the first volcanic sequence but pre-date the second (T2).

All the mafic minerals are Fe-rich. Detailed studies of amphibole and pyroxene show that their compositions define relatively limited trends, amphibole varying from ferro-richterite to arfvedsonite and pyroxenes along the acmite-hedenbergite join of the Ac-Hd-Di diagram, in both the intrusive suite and volcanic rocks. Where the two minerals coexist, pyroxene crystallized subsequent to amphibole, a situation generally found in late-stage or subsolidus aegirines. The overlap in plutonic and volcanic pyroxene trends suggests their crystallization from magmas of the same composition. However, the presence of quartz and fayalite in T1 and of pure aegirine in T2 and the occurrence of Zr-bearing aegirine (NaZr0.5Fe0.52+Si2O6) in the early crystallizing alkaline syenites evolving towards pure aegirine from medium- to fine-grained quartz syenites and granites, are consistent with changes in oxygen fugacities during magmatic differentiation. Two stages are distinguished: fO2 increasingly decreased from T1 to alkaline syenite emplacement (from 10−16 to 10−24 bracketed by WM and QFM buffers) where a disequilibrium, probably caused by water dissociation with volatile loss (H2) during magma degassing, favoured crystallization of Zr-bearing aegirine; a decrease in amphibole proportions towards medium-grained quartz syenites and an increase in fO2 from the medium-grained quartz syenites to granites and T2 sequence.

The Mg-poor nature of all the mafic silicates, subsolidus origin of amphiboles, crystallization of pyroxene subsequent to amphibole and subsolidus trends defined by pyroxenes are compatible with the parental magma having itself been a late-stage derivative magma, e.g. the last product of an alkaline melt from which the voluminous Mayo Darlé granite bodies crystallized.

The natural glasses recognized as tektites are characterized by their acidic composition, the silica percentage ranging from 68 to 80. Their origin is still a debatable point. Within this range glasses are known which have undoubtedly been produced by the fusion of siliceous terrestrial materials in the intense heat developed when large iron meteorites have struck the earth's surface; while others of the same origin show silica ranging up to 98 per cent., that is, an almost pure silica-glass.

From a collection of 84 chemical analyses of tektites taken from the literature, only 36 (many of them due to A. Lacroix) give data for the specific gravity and refractive index which presumably were determined on the same sample of material as that analysed. These are reproduced in table I (arranged in order of silica percentages) and plotted in figs. 1 and 2. Corresponding with the range in SiO2 from 68·00 to 80·73% there is a nearly uniform decrease in d (2·498–2·339) and n (1·526–1·4867). The specific refractivity, K = (n−1)/d, varies from 0·2050 to 0·2107 (0·2258 in the case of no. 29 with the abnormally high n 1.5380).

In the last twenty years quartz has become of considerable importance to the telecommunications industry, one of its most important uses being the control of the frequency of oscillation of high-frequency transmitters. In this country alone the peak war-time demand for oscillator crystals was well over a million a year.

Although quartz is very abundant in the earth's crust it is usually found in the polycrystalline state or as small crystals. Large crystals, reasonably free from twinning and flaws, are relatively rare and most of the supply for piezoelectric purposes comes from Brazil.

The residual liquids of many tholeiitic basalts and andesites, on cooling, split into iron-rich and silica-rich fractions, which may quench to brown glassy globules and clear glass respectively. More commonly, however, cooling is sufficiently slow for the iron-rich liquid to crystallize to globular single crystals of pyroxene. Depending on the cooling rate, these crystallized globules range in shape from spheres to elongated globules bounded by crystal faces. The fine grain size of the mesostasis of most tholeiites is partly due to these small crystallized globules. The silica-rich fraction, on the other hand, is more commonly quenched to a glass, and when preserved as globules in the crystallized iron-rich fraction, it may be bounded by negative crystal faces of the surrounding pyroxene. Globules of the iron-rich liquid commonly nucleate on the surface of the plagioclase crystals where they can become trapped, later crystallizing to spherical pyroxene grains that mostly contain a minor opaque phase. In contrast, iron-rich globules that form next to pyroxene grains commonly become attached to these crystals, giving them lobate boundaries. The immiscible silica-rich liquid becomes trapped between these lobes and, with sufficiently slow cooling, results in finger-like quartzo-feldspathic inclusions extending in from the margins of the pyroxene grains. These textures can provide evidence of immiscibility in a wide range of volcanic and hypabyssal rocks, even when no glass is present.

Fluorapatite grains with monazite inclusions and/or rim grains are described in two of four samples from a set of granulite-facies metapelites collected from the Variscan Schwarzwald, southern Germany. Fluorapatite in all four samples appears to have experienced some dissolution in the partial granitic melt formed during granulite-facies metamorphism. Monazite inclusions and rim grains are highly deficient in Th and are presumed to have formed from fluorapatite in association with partial melting during granulite-facies metamorphism. Monazite inclusions range from very small (<1 μm) and very numerous to small (1–2 μm), sometimes elongated, and less numerous; both types are evenly distributed throughout the fluorapatite grain interior. Monazite rim grains tend to be 1–10 μm. The formation of monazite inclusions is proposed to be due to dissolution-reprecipitation of the fluorapatite by the aqueous fluids inherent in the granitic melt. We propose that an increase in inclusion size coupled with a decrease in inclusion number is due to Ostwald ripening (interfacial energy reduction), which is greatly facilitated by the presence of an interconnected, fluid-filled porosity in the metasomatized fluorapatite. We further propose that monazite rim grains formed principally during partial dissolution of the fluorapatite in the granitic melt and to a lesser extent by partial dissolutionreprecipitation of the fluorapatite grain rim area allowing for the partial removal of (Y+REE). We conclude that fluorapatite, with monazite inclusions and rim grains, experienced partial dissolution in a H2O-rich peraluminous granitic melt compared to fluorapatite with monazite rim grains and no inclusions which reacted with a similar, relatively less H2O-rich melt. In contrast, monazite-free fluorapatite experienced partial dissolution in a comparatively H2O-poor, subaluminous, possibly peralkaline melt.

Spontaneous fission reactions occurred in several uranium deposits in SE Gabon approximately two billion years ago. The reactor zones, between 10 to 50 cm thick, are found in Proterozoic sandstones and consist of high-grade uranium ore mantled by illite and/or chlorite (Gauthier-Lafaye et al., 1989). During a mineralogical study of sandstones (quartz arenites) underlying a natural fission reactor at Bangombé (20 km south of the Oklo uranium deposit), we have found several grains of a uranous silicate, coffinite, with unusually high concentrations of phosphorous and enriched in light rare earth elements (LREE).
