Ruby-sapphire-sapphirine-spinel forms small, corroded, crystalline aggregates in corundum bearing alluvials shed from the Tertiary Barrington basalt shield volcano. Sapphirine is near a 7:9:3 (MgO-Al2O3-SiO2) composition and, together with the corundum, shows reaction rims of pleonaste spinel. Spinel in the aggregates has a compositional range Sp 68–73 Hc 27–29 Cm 0–3. The aggregates give new insights into the ruby-sapphire source rocks. Potential origins include metamorphic recrystallization of aluminous material (below 1460°C) or high temperature-high pressure crystallization reactions related to lamprophyric or basaltic magmas (up to 1300°C and 20 kbar). Sapphirine-spinel thermometry suggests final crystallization temperatures for the aggregates around 780 to 940°C and reaction with host magmas at over 1000°C.

The Barrington gemfield includes two distinct corundum suites. One, typical in eastern Australia, is dominated by blue-green, well-crystallized, growth-zoned sapphire, commonly containing rutile silk and Ferich spinel inclusions (Hc 51–73, Mt 18–35, Mf 6–8, Usp 2–6). The other, an unusual suite, is dominated by ruby and pastel coloured sapphires, with little crystal shape or growth zonation and restricted mineral inclusions, mostly chromian pleonaste and pleonaste. The ruby-sapphire-sapphirine-spinel aggregates provoke new thoughts on the origin of rubies and sapphires and their indicator minerals in eastern Australian and southeastern Asian volcanic gemfields.

The mineral conichalcite from the western part of Bagdad mine, Bagdad, Eureka District, Yavapai County, Arizona, USA has been characterized by electronic, near-infrared (NIR), Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show that the mineral consists of bundles of fibres. Calculations based on the results of the energy dispersive X-ray analyses on a stoichiometric basis show the substitution of arsenate by 12 wt.% of phosphate in the mineral. Raman and IR bands are assigned in terms of the fundamental modes of AsO43− and PO43− molecules and are related to the mineral structure. Near-IR reflectance spectroscopy shows the presence of adsorbed water and hydroxyl units in the mineral. The Cu(II) coordination polyhedron in conichalcite can have at best pseudo-tetragonal geometry. The crystal field and tetragonal field parameters of the Cu(II) complex were calculated and found to agree well with the values reported for known tetragonal distortion octahedral complexes.

The structural behaviour of a haüyne with a chemical composition of Na4.35Ca2.28K0.95[Al6Si6O24]- (SO4)2.03, at room pressure and from 33 to 1035°C on heating, was determined by using in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data (λ = 0.92249(5) Å). The satellite reflections in haüyne are lost at ∼400°C and a true substructure results because of this phase transition. There is a discontinuity in the a unit-cell parameter at ∼585°C. The α parameter increases rapidly and non-linearly to 585°C, but above 585°C, the expansion rate decreases. The percent volume change between 33 and 576°C is 2.0(3)%, and 0.6(3)% between 593 and 1035°C. Between 33 and 1035°C, the Al–O, Si–O and S–O distances are constant. Between 33 and 576°C, the angle of rotation of the AlO4 tetrahedron, jAl, changesfrom 11.5 to 5.8°, while the angle of rotation of the SiO4 tetrahedron, φSi, changesfrom 12.4 to 6.3°. The Al–O–Si bridging angle changesfrom 150.05(2) to 153.08(1)° from 33 to 576°C. Beyond 585°C, φAl and φSi angles remain nearly constant even though the maximum rotation of the tetrahedra is not achieved. Moreover, the Al–O–Si angle continues to increase at a slower rate from 585 to 1035°C by 1.05(2)°. From 33 to ∼585°C, the K atom position migrates at a slower rate than the Na and Ca atoms, and the structure expands at a high rate. Beyond 585°C, all the atomic positions of the interstitial cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+) remain nearly constant and the expansion of the structure is retarded.

Zincian hercynite is present in pelites within the aureole of the Ardara Pluton. The hercynite is always surrounded by cordierite, garnet, or feldspar and is never in contact with quartz. From textural and chemical evidence it is apparent that the hercynite is produced by the reaction of zincian staurolite → zincian hercynite + cordierite + sillimanite. A temperature of about 725°C at pressure of about 2·6 kb and anφo2 below that defined by the Q.F.M. buffer is postulated for this reaction.

The decomposition of chrysotile fibres heated in air has been studied in the range 100–1400°C by electron microscopy and infra-red absorption. The first observable change in the structure occurred at 580°C, where cavities started to open up between the (001) layers of chrysotile as the fibres were dehydrated, giving rise to strong low-angle diffraction. There was no evidence of any structure in the remaining material but some degree of the original atomic arrangement was preserved for the magnesium silicates, forsterite, and enstatite, later developed in certain preferred orientations. The manner of this crystallization was determined by the thermal treatment, for in samples held between 600°C and 800°C forsterite developed slowly with little further disruption of the fibre while above 800°C the remaining amorphous areas rapidly recrystallized to a mixture of forsterite and enstatite. It is suggested that the mechanisms described by other investigators to explain the development of forsterite in preferred orientations may serve simply to nucleate the crystallization and a similar mechanism to account for the nucleation of the enstatite crystallization is considered. At high temperatures a possible doubling of some of the lattice parameters of the silicates was observed.

In 1911 Dr. W. B. Wright briefly described the felspathized quartzite blocks in the hornblendite of Port Easdale, Kiloran Bay, Colonsay, Hebrides. He showed that the exposures provide a conclusive demonstration that the action of hornblendite magma on quartzite xenoliths was to convert them to alkali-felspar and quartz, so that in the final stage ‘one can recognize in numerous angular and rounded patches of felspathic material, without visible xenolithic core, the ghosts of former masses of quartzite’.

A Green mineral akin to monazite, derived from the State of Travancore in southern India, was investigated chemically during the first world war by the Imperial Institute, London, and was found to be exceptionally rich in thorium and uranium. No description of this unusual 'monazite' has hitherto been published.

The high content of radioactive elements in this mineral led the State Geologist, Mr. Venkitarama Mahadevan, to have a deposit opened up in 1945, in readiness for an assessment of the radioactive mineral resources of Travancore. At the invitation of the former Dewan, Sir C. P. Ramaswami Aiyar, K.C.S.I., K.C.I.E., this assessment was carried out by Dr. C. F. Davidson early in 1946.

Combined cathodoluminescence (CL) and transmitted light microscopy were used to characterize quartz from flat and steeply dipping quartz veins and from veinlets in banded host rocks from the giant Muruntau Au quartz vein deposit, Kyzyl Kum Desert, western Uzbekistan. The CL examinations were carried out using a ‘hot-cathode’ CL microscope linked to a highly sensitive digital video camera. The multi-stage deformed flat quartz veins and the steeply dipping hydrothermal formations at Muruntau are characterized by quartz with different CL colours, internal structures and degree of secondary alteration. Primary growth zoning of quartz, indiscernible in conventional polarized light was found to occur only in steeply dipping veins. The bulk of the high-grade Au mineralized ‘central’ quartz veins is dominated by one generation of hydrothermal quartz; intense brecciation of these veins is indicated by the occurrence of fragments of zoned quartz crystals. Primary growth zoning in quartz may be revealed not only by variations in the intensity of blue CL and/or by primary fluid inclusions arranged within the zones, but also by secondary inclusions and recrystallization phenomena developed along boundary surfaces between the zones. Using the results from CL imaging and microstructural analysis of the quartz, fluid inclusions investigated earlier were assigned to genetic types; the evidence of probably primary inclusions is of considerable importance for further studies of the geochemical conditions during vein formation. Considering geological and mineralogical data, CL studies of vein quartz may help to reveal the history of precipitation, deformation and recrystallization processes in the Muruntau Au ore field.

Electron microprobe analyses of chromite ores from Baramiya, Seifein, Siwigat, Ashayer, Um Salatit and Ras Shait, Egypt, reveal two compositional groups. The unaltered chromites from Baramiya and Seifein have high Al and low Cr contents [Cr/(Cr + Al) = 0.56] whereas the remainder have low Al and high Cr contents [Cr/(Cr + Al) = 0.73]. Such bimodality characterises Alpine-type peridotites. The second group probably crystallised at higher T and lower P than the first group and has a composition characteristic of a type III alpine-type peridotite, i.e. of arc or possibly ocean plateau origin but not of mid-ocean ridge origin. The crystallisation setting of the first group is less certain but not inconsistent with the same environment as the second group so that considering the likely higher pressure of crystallisation of the first group overall favours plutonic crystallisation in the roots of an arc for both groups.

Rim, patchy and fracture alteration of the chromite occurred possibly partly of late magmatic (deuteric) origin but mainly connected with fluid movements, serpentinisation and tectonism. The final composition of the resultant ferritchromite is variable and depends largely on the original chromite composition; the composition of the ferritchromite developed in highly cataclased chromites deviates markedly from that of the original chromite presumably due to unmixing and migration.

Transmission electron microscopy has been used to investigate the mechanism of natural biotite breakdown under pyrometamorphic disequilibrium conditions. Biotite in a xenolith of pelitic gneiss collected from a Tertiary dolerite sill, Isle of Mull, Scotland, shows evidence of an incipient reaction, characterised by a darkening in colour and the appearance of areas of fine-grained reaction products. TEM and analytical electron microscope data show that the reaction can be described as:

The orientations of the product phase are controlled by the crystallography of the reacting biotite, demonstrating that the transformation proceeds by a topotactic mechanism. An empirical method, based on the Mg/(Fe2+ + Fe3+) ratios of coexisting spinel and biotite from experimental data, is used to deduce that the reaction occurred above ∼ 770 °C. A comparison of the natural reaction microstructures with those produced experimentally suggest that the xenolith was probably above 800 °C for less than 48 hours and cooled to temperatures of 770 °C after ∼ 150–200 hours.

The Takab meta-ultramafic rocks of northwestern Iran crop out in association with a variety of metamorphic rocks and they can be divided into three types on the basis of dominant mineral assemblage and degree of serpentinization: metaperidotites, talc-serpentine rocks and serpentinites. The peridotite protoliths were mainly spinel-harzburgites and -dunites. The talc-serpentine rocks formed under low-grade conditions and their dominant mineral assemblage is lizardite/chrysotile + talc + calcite/dolomite. Pseudomorphic textures after olivine and pyroxene are typical. Later, lower amphibolite-facies metamorphism produced antigorite, clinochlore and tremolite. Late alteration, assisted by local shearing, produced more antigorite and late lizardite in the metaperidotites. The mineral chemistry of the serpentine polymorphs is variable. Compositions of coexisting spinel and olivine point to an ophiolitic origin. Thermometric estimates from co-existing relict olivine, pyroxenes and spinel are in the range 1000–1200ºC; clinopyroxene barometry yields a pressure of 24± 2.7 kbar for the mantle conditions. Exhumation and hydration followed, and the stability of lizardite/chrysotile constrains the T and XCO2 to <280ºC and <0.002, respectively. Subsequent prograde regional metamorphism took place in an orogenic setting, reaching peak temperatures in the range 410–540ºC at XCO2 >0.1. A Neoproterozoic–Early Cambrian age for the Takab protoliths is suggested on the basis of correlations with the Central Iran Zone. The strips of ultramafic rock in the Takab complex can be attributed to lithospheric remnants of the Proto-Tethyan ocean which closed during the Pan-African orogeny.

Hielscherite, ideally Ca3Si(OH)6(SO4)(SO3)·11H2O, (IMA 2011-037) is the first ettringite-group mineral with essential sulfite. We have identified a continuous natural solid-solution series from endmember thaumasite, Ca3Si(OH)6(SO4)(CO3)·12H2O, to a composition with at least 77 mol.% endmember hielscherite. In this series, the SO3:CO3 ratio is variable, whereas the SO4 content remains constant. Compositions with more than 50 mol.% endmember hielscherite have only been found at Graulay quarry near Hillesheim in the western Eifel Mountains, Rhineland-Palatinate, where they occur with phillipsite-K, chabazite-Ca and gypsum in cavities in alkaline basalt. Sulfite-rich thaumasite has been found in hydrothermal assemblages in young alkaline basalts in two volcanic regions of Germany: it is widespread at Graulay quarry and occurs at Rother Kopf, Schellkopf and Bellerberg quarries in Eifel district; it has also been found at Zeilberg quarry, Franconia, Bavaria. Hielscherite forms matted fibrous aggregates up to 1 cm across and groups of acicular to prismatic hexagonal crystals up to 0.3 × 0.3 × 1.5 mm. Individual crystals are colourless and transparent with a vitreous lustre and crystal aggregates are white with a silky lustre. The Mohs hardness is 2–2½. Measured and calculated densities are Dmeas = 1.82(3) and Dcalc = 1.79 g cm–3. Hielscherite is optically uniaxial (–), ω = 1.494(2), ε = 1.476(2). The mean chemical composition of holotype material (determined by electron microprobe for Ca, Al, Si, and S and gas chromatography for C, H and N, with the S4+:S6+ ratio from the crystal-structure data) is CaO 27.15, Al2O3 2.33, SiO2 7.04, CO2 2.71, SO2 6.40, SO3 12.91, N2O5 0.42, H2O 39.22, total 98.18 wt.%. The empirical formula on the basis of 3 Ca atoms per formula unit is Ca3(Si0.73Al0.28)Σ1.01(OH)5.71(SO4)1.00(SO3)0.62(CO3)0.38(NO3)0.05·10.63H2O. The presence of sulfite was confirmed by crystal-structure analysis and infrared and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra. The crystal structure of sulfite-rich thaumasite from Zeilberg quarry was solved by direct methods based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data (R1 = 0.064). The structure of hielscherite was refined using the Rietveld method (Rwp = 0.0317). Hielscherite is hexagonal, P63, a = 11.1178(2), c = 10.5381(2) Å, V = 1128.06(4) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest reflections in the X-ray powder pattern [(d, Å (I)(hkl)] are: 9.62(100)(010,100); 5.551(50)(110); 4.616(37)(012,102); 3.823(64)(112); 3.436(25)(211), 2.742(38)(032,302), 2.528(37)(123,213), 2.180(35)(042,402;223). In both hielscherite and sulfite-rich thaumasite, pyramidal sulfite groups occupy the same site as trigonal carbonate groups, with analogous O sites, whereas tetrahedral sulfate groups occupy separate positions. Hielscherite is named in honour of the German mineral collector Klaus Hielscher (b. 1957).

Effects of supercooling have been studied in a range of basaltic melts by isothermal and constant cooling rate experiments at one-atmosphere, using the wire-loop container method. The nucleation of plagioclase in these melts is systematically controlled by supercooling (-ΔT), time below the liquidus temperature, and initial superheating (+ΔT). The temperature at which the melt is initially superheated prior to supercooling controls the temperature at which crystal nucleation first takes place in a supercooled melt undergoing cooling; the greater the + ΔT the larger the degree of supercooling required prior to nucleation of the liquidus phase during cooling. In all six compositions investigated there are at least two fields in time-temperature space, one in which the liquidus phase always fails to nucleate on supercooling (favoured by small -ΔT) and one (favoured by large -ΔT) in which it always nucleates. These two fields may be separated by another in which the liquidus phase may or may not crystallize. Supercooling phenomena are not restricted to the liquidus phase but can also occur when the melt becomes saturated with subsequent phases. It is shown that the composition of plagioclase varies systematically with -ΔT and it is demonstrated that isothermal supercooling ‘lines’ can be used with a relatively high degree of accuracy to predict when nucleation of the liquidus phase will take place during constant cooling rate experiments.

During the past twenty years considerable attention has been given to the compositions of the pyroxenes from basic igneous rocks. Hess (1941) reviewed the courses of crystallization of pyroxenes from mafic magmas and drew a trend line for the lime-rich clinopyroxenes. The present investigation was undertaken primarily to determine more closely the trend in the ferroaugite region, for here Hess's trend was based on the analyses of two pyroxenes from the Skaergaard intrusion and both of these are now known to be somewhat unusual types. The Skaergaard intrusion which is a strongly fractionated gabbroic complex is Particularly suitable for this study of the ferroaugites. Fifteen new analyses have been made for this investigation and twenty-three analyses of the pyroxenes from this intrusion are now available. Using nineteen of these, new trend lines have been drawn (fig. 1) for the Skaergaard clinopyroxenes.

Early Proterozoic chemical sediments of the Birimian Supergroup in northern Ghana host several types of metamorphosed manganese-bearing rocks. Differences in the mineralogy and geochemistry can be attributed to facies changes in a mixed volcanic-volcaniclastic depositional environment. Manganese oxide-bearing phyllite, which is enriched in transition metals (Cu, Ni, Co, Zn), formed on the flanks of submarine volcanic edifices above an oxidation boundary. Towards the deeper basin, manganese silicate-rich gondites occur. These consist either of spessartine + quartz + ilmenite, or of spessartine + quartz + Mn amphiboles ± rhodonite ± hyalophane ± Mn stilpnomelane ± ilmenite. The Mn amphiboles are identified as manganoan actinolite, tirodite, and dannemorite. Sulphides are widespread as premetamorphic inclusions in Mn garnet grains. In the basin centre, chlorite schist containing garnet with 50–60 mol.% spessartine represents the most distal manganese-bearing rock which is highly diluted by volcanogenic background sedimentation. The origin of Mn-rich rocks is explained by heat-driven seawater convection systems active in submarine volcanic centres that provided hydrothermal solutions. Precipitation of different minerals depended on the geochemical conditions prevailing on the seafloor. During the Eburnean event (around 2000 Ma), the chemical sediments were metamorphosed to upper greenschist or lower amphibolite facies. Mineral assemblages in the gondites point to metamorphic conditions in the range of 450–500°C at 2–3 kbar.

Almost 400 specimens of natural and synthetic quartz were γ-irradiated and then heated. Polarized absorption spectroscopy, EPR, and spectrochemical analysis were used to investigate the various colors produced.

A blue color originated from absorption by the A1 and A2 bands at 1·85 and 2·55 eV. The substitutional A1 EPR hole-type center usually considered to be the cause of the color in smoky quartz does not correlate with A1 and A2, but with A3, a previously unreported absorption band at 2·90 eV. The A1 and A2 absorptions bleach at temperatures as low as 280 °C and as high as 360 °C the range for A3 being 140 to 380 °C. The B band at 3·95 eV was previously reported only in irradiated fused silica.

Greenish-yellow colors (appearing yellow when of low intensity) were observed after irradiation (followed by heating in some instances) in many specimens of natural and synthetic quartz; the color originates from the tail of a strong absorption band in the ultraviolet. The bleaching temperature range is the same as that for A2.

The wide variation in color of natural and irradiated smoky quartz can be explained by combinations of the smoky (A3), blue (A1 and A2), and greenish yellow absorption features.

Two mineralogically distinct lamproites occurring as dykes in the Raniganj coalfield of eastern India are described in terms of a mineralogical-genetic classification as: (1) peralkaline olivine-ilmenitephlogopite- K-feldspar lamproite (var. Damodar); and (2) peralkaline pseudoleucite-phlogopite-amphibole- K-feldspar lamproite (var. Damodar). Compositional and paragenetic data are provided for major, accessory and trace minerals. Minerals common to both rocks include: chlorite-pseudomorphed phenocrystal olivine, phenocrystal Ti-rich Al-poor phlogopite and tetraferriphlogopite, groundmass potassic amphiboles, Sr-rich apatite and monazite-(Ce), late stage Na-poor K-feldspar and quartz. The rocks differ in terms of the character of the amphiboles (Ti-potassian arfvedsonite vs. K-richterite– K-magnesioarfvedsonite–K-arfvedsonite solid solution), spinel compositions (qandilite–chromite– magnetite vs. chromite–ulvöspinel–magnetite), the presence or absence of: pseudoleucite, microphenocrystal magnesian ilmenite, diopside, titanian aegirine, lorenzenite, an unamed Ti-silicate, an unnamed Mg-Zr silicate, bazirite, rutile, dolomite and norsethite. The rocks are considered to be members of a spectrum of modally-diverse peralkaline rocks, formed from a common parental magma produced by the partial melting of the ancient metasomatized lithospheric mantle of the northern Singhbhum craton. None of the rocks can be considered as aillikites, minettes, orangeites or kimberlites.

A single-crystal neutron diffraction study of oxy-dravite from Osarara (Narok district, Kenya) was performed. Intensity data were collected in Laue geometry at 10 K and anisotropic-structure refinement was undertaken. For the first time, two independent H sites were refined unambiguously for a mineral belonging to the tourmaline supergroup and located at 0.26, 0.13, 0.38 (labelled as H3, site occupancy ∼98%) and at 0, 0, 0.9 (labelled as H1, site occupancy ∼25%). The H-bonding scheme can thus be defined as follows: (1) the O at the O3 site acts as a ‘donor’ and the O at the O5 site as ‘acceptor’, the refined O3–H3 bond distance is 0.972(2) Å (and 0.9946 Å corrected for “riding motion”), H3⋯O5 = 2.263(2) Å, O3⋯O5 = 3.179(1) Å and O3–H3⋯O5 = 156.6(1)°; (2) the oxygen at the O1 site acts as a ‘donor’ and the O atoms at O4 and O5 as ‘acceptors’, the refined O1–H1 bond distance is 0.958(8) Å (and 0.9833 Å corrected for “riding motion”), H1⋯O4 = 2.858(6) Å, O1⋯O4 = 3.378(1) Å and O1–H1⋯O4 = 115.12(1)°, whereas H1⋯O5 = 2.886(6) Å, O1⋯O5 = 3.444(1) Å and O1–H1⋯O5 = 118.23(1)°. A further test refinement was performed with the H1 site out of the three-fold axis (at 0.02, 0.01, 0.90); this leads to O1–H1 = 0.995(8) Å (and 1.0112 Å corrected for “riding motion”), H1⋯O4 = 2.747(6) Å and O1–H1⋯O4 = 121.7(4)°, whereas H1⋯O5 = 2.654(9) Å and O1–H1⋯O5 = 136.5(6)°. Bond-valence analysis shows that the H-bonding strength involving O3 is stronger than that involving O1: ∼0.11 and <0.05 valence units, respectively.

The refined angle between the O3–H3 vector and [0001] is 3.40(9)°. Such a small angle is in line with a pleochroic scheme for the OH-stretching absorption bands measured by infrared spectroscopy.

In the following pages an account is given of the rock assemblages produced at the contact of a dolcrite intrusion with chalk. Owing to the intense localized assimilation of calcium carbonate by the dolerite magma, unusual rock types are produced. The products of the endogenous contact-zone are dealt with in detail. Those of the exogenous contact-zone have in part been described already, but some additional data are incorporated in this account.
