The flow in the wake of a finite rotating disc was recently investigated by Leslie [1], who showed that the structure of the wake was very similar to that found for the two-dimensional flow past the trailing edge of a flat plate by Goldstein. Here, we investigate the inner region where the Goldstein wake joins onto the flow over the plate itself. Because there is no pressure jump across the rim at the edge of the Ekman layer, no third deck is necessary, so this inner region has width O (E½) and contains just two decks, the lower thickness O(E⅔) and the upper with thickness O(E½); E is the Ekman number for the flow. The resultant differential equation in the lower deck for the radial and axial velocities is uncoupled from that for the azimuthal velocity, and has exactly the same form as the equation found by Stewartson [4] for the lower deck in the flat plate problem cited above.

Let q = pn, p a rational prime, and let be the finite field with q elements. The polynomial ring is considered as an analogue of the ring of rational integers ℤ. Completing the quotient field with respect to the normalized valuation at ∞, and then taking algebraic closure, we obtained the field k∞ whose elements will be called “numbers”.

In trying to extend some theorems of diophantine approximation to number fields or function fields, one meets certain difficulties associated with the presence of units. By using a very simple trick, one overcomes these difficulties. In this paper I limit myself to one example.

In general the terminology and notation of [1] is used throughout. A correspondence for topological spaces is a triple f: P → Q where P and Q are topological spaces and f is a subset of P × Q, the graph of f: P → Q. A correspondence f: P → Q will be called graph-compact, or graph-closed, or graph-Souslin, or graph-analytic if f is, respectively, compact or closed or Souslin or analytic in P × Q.

We consider the following question: for which metrizable separable spaces $X$ does the free abelian topological group $A(X\oplus X)$ isomorphically embed into $A(X)$. While for many natural spaces $X$ such an embedding exists, our main result shows that if $X$ is a Cook continuum or $X$ is a rigid Bernstein set, then $A(X\oplus X)$ does not embed into $A(X)$ as a topological subgroup. The analogous statement is true for the free boolean group $B(X)$.

Let G and H be Hausdorff locally compact groups. By R(G, H) we denote the space of continuous homomorphisms of G into H equipped with the compact-open topology, namely that which is generated by subsets of the form

where K is any compact subset of G and U is any open subset of H. Further, let R0(G, H) be the subset of R(G, H) consisting of elements r satisfying the conditions that the quotient space H/r(G) is compact and r is proper, i.e., the action of G on H defined as the action by left translations of r(G) on H is proper. It has been shown by H. Abels [2] that if G and H are such that at least one of them has a compact defining subset then R0(G,H) is open in R(G,H). Moreover, for each r0 ∈ R0(G,H) there exists a neighbourhood M and a compact subset F of H such that r(G) F = H for all r ∈ M and for each compact subset K of H the union is a relatively compact subset of G. It is furthermore shown in [1] that if G contains no small subgroups and H is connected then the subset of R0(G, H) consisting of isomorphisms of G into H is open in R(G, H). These results, in the case in which H is a connected Lie Group and G is a discrete group, have been established by Weil in [5] and [6] appendix 1.

It is well known that two Borel subsets of the unit interval are Borel isomorphic, if, and only if, they have the same cardinality. The problem of the existence of analytic, non-Borelian subsets of the unit interval, which are not Borel isomorphic, has not been resolved within ZFC. With the additional assumption of the existence of an uncountable coanalytic set which does not contain a perfect set, it has been shown that there are at least three Borel isomorphism classes of analytic non-Borelian sets [4, 5].

We consider a body which occupies the open, bounded, regular region B, whose boundary is ∂B and whose closure is . We denote by da the element of surface area, by dυ the element of volume, and by n the outward unit normal. That these two subjects—the History of Science and the Psychology of Invention—are intimately connected with one another, is immediately evident and needs no explanation. Perhaps, however, it has not always been sufficiently appreciated. The recent Congress for the History of Science (Jerusalem, 1953) has given me an opportunity of trying to apply to the latter the data of the former.

Summary. A rigid circular inclusion, or peg, is symmetrically fixed in an infinite elastic strip of finite width. A simple tension acts on the ends of the strip while the edges are stress free, and no slip takes place between peg and strip. The system is in a state of generalized plane stress.

Asymmetry classes of convex bodies have been introduced and investigated by G. Ewald and G. C. Shephard [2], [3], [6]. These classes are defined as follows. Let denote the set of all convex bodies in n-dimensional Euclidean space ℝn. For K1, K2 ∊ write K1 ∼ K2 if there exist centrally symmetric convex bodies S1, S2 ∊ such that

The problem of finding rational points on varieties defined by two additive cubic equations has attracted some interest. Davenport and Lewis [12], Cook [8] and Vaughan [16] showed that the pair of equations

with integer coefficients a,, bt always has a nontrivial solution when s = 18, s = 17, and 5 = 16 respectively. Vaughan's result in s = 16 variables is best possible since there are examples of pairs of equations (1) with s = 15 which fail to vanish simultaneously in the 7-adic field. However if the existence of a 7-adic solution is assured then Baker and Briidern [2], building on work of Cook [9], showed that s = 16 could be replaced by s = 15, and recently Briidern [5] has obtained the result with s = 14.

This paper originated with the observation that while all of the known stable lattice packings of spheres are highly symmetric, it is futile to try to prove a converse statement: the ordinary integer-lattice provides a distinctly unstable packing of spheres, but admits a large group of orthogonal symmetries nonetheless. The integerlattice is in fact very unstable—the slightest perturbation places the spheres in a more efficient configuration. We will call such a lattice fragile. The purpose of this note is to prove that a highly symmetric lattice must be either stable or fragile.

Criteria for 2 to be an e-th power residue of a prime

p ≡ 1 (mod e = ef+1,

have been obtained in various forms for e = 2, 3, 5. Euler proved the well known result that 2 is a quadratic residue of a prime p ≡ ± l (mod 8). Dickson [1] showed that 2 is a cubic residue of p ≡ 1 (mod 3) if and only if p = L2+27M2 is soluble in integers L, M.

In 1984 Heath-Brown [5] proved the following conjecture of Erdős and Mirsky [2] (which seemed at one time as hard as the twin prime problem):

“There exist infinitely many integers n for which d(n) = d(n + 1).”

Erdős (see [4]) asked if there are infinitely many integers k which are not a difference or a sum of two powers, i.e., if there are infinitely many positive integers k with k≠|um ± vn| for u, v, m, n ε ℤ. This is certainly a very difficult problem. For example, it is known that the Catalan equation, i.e., the equation um − vn = 1 with uv≠0 and min (m, n)≥2 has only finitely many solutions (u, v, m, n), but there is no other positive integer k≥1 for which it is known that the equation

has only finitely many solution (u, v, m, n) with min (m, n)≥2.
