Answering two questions of Beresnevich and Velani, we develop zero-one laws in both simultaneous and multiplicative Diophantine approximation. Our proofs mainly rely on a versatile Cassels–Gallagher type theorem and the cross fibering principle of Beresnevich, Haynes and Velani.

This paper is motivated by Davenport’s problem and the subsequent work regarding badly approximable points in submanifolds of a Euclidean space. We study the problem in the area of twisted Diophantine approximation and present two different approaches. The first approach shows that, under a certain restriction, any countable intersection of the sets of weighted badly approximable points on any non-degenerate ${\mathcal{C}}^{1}$ submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ has full dimension. In the second approach, we introduce the property of isotropically winning and show that the sets of weighted badly approximable points are isotropically winning under the same restriction as above.

In this paper we investigate the p-periodicity of the S-arithmetic groups G = GL(n, Os(K)) and G1 = SL(n, Os(K)) where Os(K) is the ring of S-integers of a number field K (cf. [12, 13]; S is a finite set of places in K including the infinite places). These groups are known to be virtually of finite (cohomological) dimension, and thus the concept of p-periodicity is defined; it refers to a rational prime p and to the p-primary component Ĥi(G, A, p) of the Farrell-Tate cohomology Ĥi(G, A) with respect to an arbitrary G-module A. We recall that Ĥi coincides with the usual cohomology Hi for all i above the virtual dimension of G, and that in the case of a finite group (i.e., a group of virtual dimension zero) the Ĥi, i ∈ℤ, are the usual Tate cohomology groups. The group G is called p-periodic if Ĥi(G, A, p) is periodic in i, for all A, and the smallest corresponding period is then simply called the p-period of G. If G has no p-torsion, the p-primary component of all its Ĥi is 0, and thus G is trivially p-periodic.

For a convex polytope P, let s(P) and σ(P) denote, respectively, the largest t such that P has a t-dimensional face (section) which is a simplex. Using Gale diagrams, lower bounds are obtained for these numbers and formulae are developed for the behaviour of s and σ over Cartesian and other products.

A reduction method due to R. Rado [7] yields an elegant proof of the Halls' theorems on transversals of a family of sets (see for example [4]). We use here this method to give simple new proofs of some basic theorems on common transversals of a pair of families of sets.

A new and more geometric proof is obtained of Stanley's lower bounds on the face numbers of centrally symmetric simple polytopes.

A (countably) compact measure is one which is inner regular with respect to a (countably) compact class of sets. This note characterizes compact probability measures in terms of the representation of Boolean homomorphisms of their measure algebras, and shows that the same ideas can be used to give a direct proof of J. Pachl's theorem that any image measure of a countably compact measure is again countably compact.

A sequence {an} of integers is said to be primitive if ai × aj whenever i ≠ j. Let f be a polynomial with integer coefficients and A a sequence of positive integers. We discuss further a problem considered in [1] in which I. Anderson, W. W. Stothers and the author investigated primitive sequences of the form f(A) = {f(x), x ∈ A}. (Of course, we can assume f(x)→ ∞ as x → ∞.) We shall prove the following theorem in which A(n), as usual, denotes the number of memhers of A that are. less than or equal to n.

In [2], Fabrikant and his colleagues obtain a closed form solution to a generalized potential problem for a surface of revolution. This they specialize to solve three electrostatic problems for a spherical cap, including one for which the boundary conditions are not axisymmetric. In all three the solutions are expressed in terms of elementary functions.

No systematic study seems to have been made of so natural a question as the analogue for matrices of quadratic residues. One generalization of x2 (x an integer) is X2 (X an integral matrix). Another is X′ X, where the prime means “transpose”. We study here the solvability for X of the congruence

We prove a characterization of functions in B1/4(K)\C(K), where K is a compact metric space in terms of c0-spreading models, answering a Problem of R. Haydon, E. Odell and H. Rosenthal. Beginning with B1/4(K) we define a decreasing family (Vξ(K),║ · ║ξ)1≤ξ<ω1 of Banach spaces whose intersection is DBSC(K) and we prove an analogous stronger property for the functions in Vξ(K)\C(K). Defining the s-spreading model-index, we classify B1/4;(K) and we prove that s-SM[F]>ξ for every F∈ Vξ(K). Also we classify the separable Banach spaces by defining the c0-SM-index which measures the degree to which they have sequences with extending spreading models equivalent to the usual basis of c0. We give examples of Baire-1 functions and reflexive spaces with arbitrary large indices.
