A conjecture of Orlov predicts that derived equivalent smooth projective varieties over a field have isomorphic Chow motives. The conjecture is known for curves, and was recently observed for surfaces by Huybrechts. In this paper we focus on threefolds over perfect fields, and unconditionally secure results, which are implied by Orlov's conjecture, concerning the geometric coniveau filtration, and abelian varieties attached to smooth projective varieties.

Quantum mechanics is formulated in terms of the sequences introduced in earlier papers of the series. This reformulation resolves some difficulties in the foundations of quantum theory and gives a new picture of an elementary particle.

The view which the author has expressed regarding catalytic activity as due to frozen groups of atoms with strong specific external fields is further tested by a study of the stability of preparations of copper at the instant of formation, and during the subsequent life of the catalyst.

1. Introduction and statement of results. Let f: Mn-1 → ℝn be an immersion into Euclidean space ℝn. Each unit vector v to ℝn determines a height function bv: ℝn → ℝ. If each of E and F is a real Banach space, H a compact Hausdorff space, C(H, E) the Banach space (sup norm ∥·∥∞) of continuous E-valued functions defined on H, L: C(H, E)→F a continuous linear transformation (=operator) with representing measure m, [sum ] the σ-algebra of Borel subsets of H and m˜(A) the semivariation of m on A∈[sum ], then m maps [sum ] into B(E, F**), the Banach space of all operators from E into F** (= the bidual of F), ∥L∥=m˜(H) and L(f)=∫ fdm. A convolution formula is established for Bell polynomials. This is expressed in seven equivalent ways and used to derive further properties of these polynomials. The application of these results to some twenty-seven special polynomial sets is shown and illustrated in the case of binomial, Hermite, Gegenbauer and generalized Bernoulli sets.

Let R be a commutative ring which may not contain a multiplicative identity. A set of elements a1,…,ak in R will be called an H1-set (this notation is explained in section 1) if for each relation r1a1 + … +rkak = 0 (ri ∈ R) there exist elements sij ∈ R such that

where Xl,…,Xk are indeterminates. Any R-sequence is an H1-set, but there do exist H1-sets which are not R-sequences (see section 1). Throughout this note we consider an H1-set a1,…,ak which we suppose to be partitioned into two non-empty sets bl…, br and cl,…, cs. Our main purpose is to show that the ideals B = Rb1 + … + Rbr and C = Rc1 + … + Rcs satisfy Bm ∩ Cn = BmCn for all positive integers m and n (Corollary 1). This generalizes Lemma 2 of Caruth(2) where the result is proved when a1,…, ak is a permutable R-sequence. Our proof involves more detail than is necessary just for this, and we obtain various other properties of H1-sets. In particular we extend the main results of Corsini(3) concerning the symmetric and Rees algebras of a power of the ideal Ra1 +… + Rak (Corollary 3).

Energy of the exterior and the interior fields of a particle, charged or otherwise, embedded in an empty space is calculated, using Møller's tetrad formulation of the energy-momentum complex in general relativity. It is found that the exterior field contains positive gravitational energy, and in addition, the electromagnetic energy if the particle is a charged one and that the sum total of the energies of the interior and the exterior fields is equivalent to the Newtonian mass of the particle.

1. This paper is concerned with certain properties of the solutions of differential equations of the type

where f, g have continuous partial derivatives up to the second order satisfying Lipschitz conditions in some bounded domain and are periodic in t with period 2π, ω is a positive constant and k is a small parameter. If f = 0, (1·1) is equivalent to

an equation representing the forced vibrations of a quasi-linear system of one degree of freedom.

For α a positive irrational, let 𝛢α be the subalgebra of continuous functions on the two-torus whose Fourier transform vanishes at (m, n) if m+αn < 0. These algebras were studied by Wermer and others, who proved properties such as maximality and characterised the Gelfand space. One of the major themes of current work in operator algebras is classification, but none of the properties which were investigated earlier distinguished between 𝛢α and αβ, if β is another positive irrational. We address this question. We also determine the automorphism group of 𝛢α.

In this note we consider a particular type of covering problem. Let T be given a plane set and Tθ be the set obtained from T by a rotation about some point in the plane through an angle θ in the clockwise sense. If a set K is such that for every θ there is a translation which transforms Tθ into a subset of K then we say that K is a rotation cover of T. The problem considered here is to determine for fixed n, l the triangle of least area which is a rotation cover for an n-sided regular polygon of side length l. In each case the solution is an equilateral triangle the altitude of which is given by

This solution is unique.

In [4] I extended the Plücker formulae to curves in Pn for any n, under fairly strong genericity hypotheses. In this paper we seek to weaken these hypotheses using the theory of excess intersections. The method applies to just one of the formulae (so the results are complete only for n=3), and for this we obtain a number which is a sum of local contributions, given by an explicit rule. We evaluate these contributions in the cases when they are determined by the terms of least order in the respective Taylor expansions, thus obtaining explicit formulae in numerous cases.

Some experiments are described in which the efficiency of ionisation of potassium at a hot molybdenum surface was investigated. The degree of ionisation observed is consistent with the most recent measurements of the electron work function of molybdenum.

The first examples of Bohr almost periodic functions that are not almost periodic were given by T. -S. Wu. Later, the present author showed that Bohr almost periodic functions could be distal (and not almost periodic) and even merely minimal. Here it is proved that all Bohr almost periodic functions are minimal. The proof yields an unusual feature about the orbit of a Bohr almost periodic function, one which does not characterize Bohr almost periodic functions, but can be used to show that a Bohr almost periodic function f that is point distal must be distal or, if f is almost automorphic, it must be almost periodic. Some pathologies of Bohr almost periodic functions are discussed.

Numerical solution of differential and integral equations is concerned mainly with the determination of the wanted function at a finite number of discrete points which are, in general, uniformly spaced. A first approximation to the solution can be obtained if the given differential or integral system is replaced by a difference system. Any differential or integral operator can be expressed as an infinite series of difference operators and the difference system of the first approximation is obtained by neglecting all but the first few terms of the infinite expansions. We shall distinguish two processes for improving the approximation: the first uses a tabular interval of moderate length but the approximation to the given continuous system is improved by including in the difference system as many terms of the infinite expansions as are necessary or practicable; the second process uses an unvarying difference system of low accuracy, but the tabular interval is reduced in successive approximations, the process being continued until two successive approximations agree within the accuracy required. We regard these processes as essentially distinct. If the solutions obtained by the two processes approach limits, these limits need not coincide.

The problem of completing the mathematical structures abstracted from the time ordering of the events in the space-times of general relativity is motivated and solved. The new construction is compared with that of Geroch, Kronheimer and Penrose (5).

1. We work in the category of compact polyhedral spaces and polyhedral maps ((5)). Given spaces M and Q and a map f: M → Q, we define Ur(f) to be the set of points x ∈ M such that f−1f(x) contains at least r points. Sr(f) is the closure of Ur(f) in M. f is an embedding if it is a homeomorphism into, and an immersion if it is locally an embedding. We shall call f a simple immersion if S3(f) = ø and the connected components of S2(f) are individually embedded by f. Obviously a simple immersion is an immersion. If M and Q are manifolds (as they will be for the rest of the paper)f: M → Q is proper if it takes ∂M, the boundary of M, into ∂Q. In (2) the following result was proved:

Theorem 1. Let Mmbe(2m−q)-connected and Qq be(2m−q + 1)-connected, m ≤ q−3. Then any proper map f: M → Q which embeds ∂M is homotopic rel ∂M to an embedding.

1. The questions considered in this note are suggested by the elementary topology of the trajectories of systems of non-linear differential equations. Such a system may be assumed in the form

and the values of the dependent variables x1, x2, …, xn at ‘time’ t can be represented by a point P(t) in a ‘phase space’ . As t varies, P(t) describes a curve in , which is a trajectory of (1). Now it often happens that contains a subspace E (usually of lower dimension) with the following properties: (i) by considering the trajectories generated by points P(t) which are, for t = 0, in E, all the trajectories of (1) are obtained; (ii) if P(0) is in E, then P(t) is not in E for 0 < t < c, where c is a constant independent of P(0) in E; (iii) if P(0) is in E, then the trajectory meets E again for some finite t at a point P(T) (T is not necessarily the same for all points of E). By considering P(T) as the image of P(O), a mapping of E into itself is defined which is associated with the system (1), and the topology of the trajectories of (1) can be studied conveniently by discussing this mapping. When the functions fi in (1) satisfy the continuity and Lipschitz conditions of the classical existence-and-uniqueness theorem, the mapping is one-one and continuous. The study of this ‘transformation theory’, initiated by Poincaré, has been developed chiefly by G. D. Birkhoff(l,2). His results have been applied to problems of ‘non-linear mechanics’ by N. Levinson(3).

Let $d \ge 3$ be an integer and let $P \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a polynomial of degree d whose Galois group is $S_d$. Let $(a_n)$ be a non-degenerate linearly recursive sequence of integers which has P as its characteristic polynomial. We prove, under the generalised Riemann hypothesis, that the lower density of the set of primes which divide at least one non-zero element of the sequence $(a_n)$ is positive.
