In a paper recently published I found it necessary to extend those investigations of Lord Rayleigh which deal with the instability of the surface common to two streams of fluid. The Rayleigh investigation is equivalent to a first order approximation to the flow and concludes that the initial form of the disturbance of the common surface is maintained but that its amplitude increases exponentially with the time, the form of the surface at time t being, with particular values inserted,

where a is the initial amplitude, 2π/k the wave-length, U the velocity of the upper stream, – U the velocity of the lower stream, and ρ the density of both fluids. A second order approximation to the flow for the above particular case shows that the original disturbance does not grow symmetrically, the ordinate of the common surface being given by

(A slightly amended form of this solution is given byequation III(8).) The solution suggests the initial stages in the formation of vortices. The problem was further discussed by a numerical step-by-step method and showed the formation of vortices quite clearly.

1. The quadrics of space are linearly dependent on ten among them; any ten linearly independent quadrics may be chosen to constitute the base, but it is customary in analytical work to select the four squares and the six products of pairs of four planes which are the faces of some tetrahedron of reference. This choice is adequate enough for many purposes, but it gives an unsymmetrical twist to the work; whereas four quadrics of the base are repeated planes the other six are plane pairs, and the curve common to two of the ten base quadrics can be a skew quadrilateral, a repeated line-pair, or a line counted four times. This radical defect can be mitigated by taking as base a certain set of ten non-singular quadrics, namely, the set of ten fundamental quadrics which is so prominent a feature of Klein's figure of six mutually apolar linear complexes. Every pair of such a set of ten quadrics has its two members related to one another in precisely the same way; their common curve is a skew quadrilateral and they are their own polar reciprocals with respect to each other.

It will be shown that this system provides an example of exactly exponential decay. This is of interest in view of recent papers discussing the validity of the exponential decay law (see, for example, Khalfin (1)and Martin (2)).

A general method is described in this paper for the minimization of a function subject to a set of non-linear constraints. This method has been used to solve some problems in the geometry of numbers. Critical lattices of several regions have been computed and some results are given.

The figure in three dimensions consisting of two sets of three non-intersecting lines, such that each line of one set intersects each line of the other set, will here be called a “net.” All nets are projectively equivalent to each other: and there are just 72 projective transformations that change one net into another.

We show that for general linear groups GLn(q) as well as for q-Schur algebras the knowledge of the modular Alvis–Curtis duality over fields of characteristic ℓ, ℓ ∤ q, is equivalent to the knowledge of the decomposition numbers.

Using class field theory we prove an explicit result of André–Oort type for $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C}) \times \mathbb{G}_m(\mathbb{C})$. In this variation the special points of $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})$ are the singular moduli, while the special points of $\mathbb{G}_m(\mathbb{C})$ are defined to be the roots of unity.

In this paper, it is shown that certain quantities defined with reference to the rays of a rectilinear congruence, remain unchanged for a change in the director surface, provided that the spherical representation of the congruence is kept unchanged. These quantities may be called semi-invariants. Some known invariants have been expressed in terms of these semi-invariants. An attempt has been made to find how these semi-invariants alter when the parametric curves are changed in any manner.

A symmetric operator on a Hilbert space, with deficiency indices (m; m) has self-adjoint extensions. These are ‘highly reducible’. The original operator may be irreducible, (see example (i), below). Can the mechanism whereby reducibility is achieved be understood? The concrete examples most readily studied are those associated with differential operators. It is easy to obtain operators, associated with a formal linear differential operator, having deficiency indices (m; m). What of reducibility? Nothing seems to be known. In the case of the first-order operator we were able, using the Volterra operator, to establish irreducibility of the associated minimal operator. To investigate symmetric operators associated with a second-order differential operator, different methods had to be developed. They apply also to the first-order operator, and we employ them to demonstrate the irreducibility of the associated minimal operator. In the second-order case the minimal operator proves reducible, and we also exhibit examples of reducibility of associated symmetric operators. It would clearly be of interest to elucidate the influence of the boundary conditions on reducibility.

Cosmic censorship hypothesis [1] is a major unsolved problem in classical general relativity. According to this hypothesis singularities occurring in generic space-times should not be naked. This means that there should not be singularities to the future of a regular initial surface that are visible to observers at infinity A mathematically precise statement of the hypothesis is that a space-time should be future asymptotically predictable from a partial Cauchy surface ([2] p. 310).

We study the decay of μ(B(x,r)∩C)/μ(B(x,r)) as r ↓ 0 for different kinds of measures μ on ℝn and various cones C around x. As an application, we provide sufficient conditions that imply that the local dimensions can be calculated via cones almost everywhere.

The properties of centre-of-mass systems at high energies are discussed, and the single time form of field theory is used to set up state vectors that describe the simpler centre-of-mass states of fields. These states, which are labelled by the eigenvalues of total angular momentum, are expanded in terms of the spherical harmonic resolution of the fields about a fixed point. A discussion of the application of the method to pion-nucleon scattering is given.

One of the most important concepts in the theory of approximation by analytic functions is that of analytic continuation. In a typical problem, for example, there is generally a region Ω, a Banach space B of functions analytic in Ω and a subfamily ℱ ⊂ B, each member of which is analytic in some larger open set, and one might be asked to decide whether or not ℱ is dense in B. It often happens, however, that either ℱ is dense or the only functions which can be so approximated have a natural analytic continuation across ∂Ω. A similar phenomenon is also known to occur even for approximation on sets without interior. In this article we shall describe a method for proving such theorems which can be applied in a variety of settings and, in particular, to: (1)  the Bernštein problem for weighted polynomial approximation on the real line; (2)  the completeness problem for weighted polynomial approximation on bounded simply connected regions; (3) the Shapiro overconvergence problem for sequences of rational functions with sparse poles; (4) the Akutowicz-Carleson minimum problem for interpolating functions. Although we shall present no new results, the method of proof, which is based on an argument of the author [6], seems sufficiently versatile to warrant exposition.

Quantum mechanics is formulated in terms of the sequences introduced in earlier papers of the series. This reformulation resolves some difficulties in the foundations of quantum theory and gives a new picture of an elementary particle.

A k-3 cap in a three-dimensional Galois space, S3,q, is a set of k points, of which some 3, but no 4 are collinear. It is shown in (2) that for q ≥ 4.

Let $\mathcal{M}$ denote the mapping class group of Σ, a compact connected oriented surface with one boundary component. The action of $\mathcal{M}$ on the nilpotent quotients of π1(Σ) allows to define the so-called Johnson filtration and the Johnson homomorphisms. J. Levine introduced a new filtration of $\mathcal{M}$, called the Lagrangian filtration. He also introduced a version of the Johnson homomorphisms for this new filtration. The first term of the Lagrangian filtration is the Lagrangian mapping class group, whose definition involves a handlebody bounded by Σ, and which contains the Torelli group. These constructions extend in a natural way to the monoid of homology cobordisms. Besides, D. Cheptea, K. Habiro and G. Massuyeau constructed a functorial extension of the LMO invariant, called the LMO functor, which takes values in a category of diagrams. In this paper we give a topological interpretation of the upper part of the tree reduction of the LMO functor in terms of the homomorphisms defined by J. Levine for the Lagrangian mapping class group. We also compare the Johnson filtration with the filtration introduced by J. Levine.

An important problem in the topology of 3-manifolds is to classify manifolds obtained by Dehn surgeries on a knot in a closed 3-manifold, or equivalently, Dehn fillings of a 3-manifold M with boundary a torus.
