1. A theorem of Montel (14), states that if f(z) is analytic and bounded in the half-strip

Bohr (3), has proved a version of this result applicable to functions analytic, but not necessarily bounded, in S(a, b) and Hardy, Ingham and Pólya (10), have considered whether or not f(z) can be replaced by |f(z)| in (1·1) and (1·2). They show that this is not so but prove that if f(z) is analytic and bounded in S(a, b) and if

A general summability method, the so called θ-summability is considered for multi-dimensional Fourier series, where θ is in the Wiener algebra W(C,ℓ1)(d). It is based on the use of Wiener amalgam spaces, weighted Feichtinger's algebra, Herz and Hardy spaces. Under some conditions on θ, it is proved that the maximal operator of the θ-means is bounded from the Hp Hardy space to Lp (or Hp). This implies some norm and almost everywhere convergence results for the θ-means. Large number of special cases of the θ-summation are considered.

In this paper we prove that for any odd prime p, a Moufang loop of order 2p2 is a group and there is exactly one non-associative right Bol loop of order 2p2.

An extension of Bellman's analogue of Wald's identity is proved for Markov processes with a finite number of states, in which (a) the diagonal matrices of the state functions and the transition matrices may be heterogeneous but are so related that the product of the two matrices which apply at any stage has at least one modal vector in common with all of the corresponding products which apply at other stages, and (b) the probability distribution of the duration of any one realization of the process satisfies certain conditions. The condition (a) is called equimodality. The conditions for (b) are satisfied when there is asymptotically a sufficiently abrupt exponential upper bound to the probability distribution of the duration, and extends simply to validate analogues involving latent roots other than the one which appears in Bellman's formula. A certain generalization of Wald's stopping rule produces a bound of this kind.

The notation which we use is that of a recent paper by one of us, and we quote results from that paper as they are required. It is known (see R, Theorem 1, for example) that the vector space k of all cusp-forms f(z) of even negative dimension – k (k ≥ 12), belonging to the full modular group Γ(1), possesses a finite basis of forms

where k is defined by (2·10) of R and the coefficients possess the following properties:

for a prime p, where p is a positive integer.

We develop a version of Freĭman's theorem for a class of non-abelian groups, which includes finite nilpotent, supersolvable and solvable A-groups. To do this we have to replace the small doubling hypothesis with a stronger relative polynomial growth hypothesis akin to that in Gromov's theorem (although with an effective range), and the structures we find are balls in (left and right) translation invariant pseudo-metrics with certain well behaved growth estimates.

Our work complements three other recent approaches to developing non-abelian versions of Freĭman's theorem by Breuillard and Green, Fisher, Katz and Peng, and Tao.

It has been shown by Landau(8) that in a uniform plasma with a Maxwelliau velocity distribution longitudinal waves are damped. Penrose(9) has considered more general distributions and developed stability criteria. In particular, if the velocity distribution function has only one maximum, then the plasma is stable. In this paper the values of the Landau damping for some stable single maximum distributions are compared in order to assess the sensitivity of Landau damping to the form of the distribution function, and to investigate the usefulness of approximating to the Landau damping in a Maxwellian plasma by using an algebraically simpler velocity distribution function.

It is shown also that, for at least some velocity distributions having a maximum particle velocity, the behaviour of the plasma can no longer be described in terms of exponential damping, since there will be longer lasting perturbations with phase velocity equal to the maximum particle velocity.

Two related issues are explored for bond percolation on ${\mathbb{Z}^d$ (with d ≥ 3) and its dual plaquette process. Firstly, for what values of the parameter p does the complement of the infinite open cluster possess an infinite component? The corresponding critical point pfin satisfies pfin ≥ pc, and strict inequality is proved when either d is sufficiently large, or d ≥ 7 and the model is sufficiently spread out. It is not known whether d ≥ 3 suffices. Secondly, for what p does there exist an infinite dual surface of plaquettes? The associated critical point psurf satisfies psurf ≥ pfin.

Let M be a closed simply-connected 4-manifold. All manifolds will be assumed smooth and oriented. The purpose of this paper is to classify up to conjugacy the topological subgroups of Diff(M) isomorphic to the 2-dimensional torus T2 (Theorem 1), and to give an explicit formula for the number of such conjugacy classes (Theorem 2). Such a conjugacy class corresponds uniquely to a weak equivalence class of effective T2-actions on M. Thus the classification problem is trivial unless M supports an effective T2-action. Orlik and Raymond showed that this happens if and only if M is a connected sum of copies of ± ;P2 and S2 × S2 (2), and so this paper is really a study of the different T2-actions on these manifolds.

It can be very difficult to determine whether or not certain rings are really full matrix rings. For example, let p be an odd prime, let H be the ring of quaternions over the integers localized at p, and set

Then T is not presented as a full matrix ring, but there is a subring W of H such that T ≅ M2(W). On the other hand, if we take H to be the ring of quaternions over the integers and form T as above, then it is not known whether T ≅ M2(W) for some ring W. The significance of p being an odd prime is that H/pH is a full 2 x 2 matrix ring, whereas H/2H is commutative. Whether or not a tiled matrix ring such as T above can be re-written as a full matrix ring depends on the sizes of the matrices involved in T and H/pH. To be precise, let H be a local integral domain with unique maximal ideal M and suppose that every one-sided ideal of H is principal. Then H/M ≅ Mk(D) for some positive integer k and division ring D. Given a positive integer n. let T be the tiled matrix ring consisting of all n x n matrices with elements of H on and below the diagonal and elements of M above the diagonal. We shall show in Theorem 2.5 that there is a ring W such that T ≅ Mn(W) if and only if n divides k. An important step in the proof is to show that certain idempotents in T/J(T) can be lifted to idempotents in T, where J(T) is the Jacobson radical of T. This technique for lifting idempotents also makes it possible to show that there are (k + n − 1)!/ k!(n−1)! isomorphism types of finitely generated indecomposable projective right T-modules (Theorem 2·10).

In [6] the first author proved that for any β ∈ (1, βKL) every x ∈ (0, 1/(β − 1)) has a simply normal β-expansion, where βKL ≈ 1.78723 is the Komornik–Loreti constant. This result is complemented by an observation made in [22], where it was shown that whenever β ∈ (βT, 2] there exists an x ∈ (0, 1/(β − 1)) with a unique β-expansion, and this expansion is not simply normal. Here βT ≈ 1.80194 is the unique zero in (1, 2] of the polynomial x3 − x2 − 2x + 1. This leaves a gap in our understanding within the interval [βKL, βT]. In this paper we fill this gap and prove that for any β ∈ (1, βT], every x ∈ (0, 1/(β − 1)) has a simply normal β-expansion. For completion, we provide a proof that for any β ∈ (1, 2), Lebesgue almost every x has a simply normal β-expansion. We also give examples of x with multiple β-expansions, none of which are simply normal.

Our proofs rely on ideas from combinatorics on words and dynamical systems.

In the general systems of vortices represented by (1) the mean variation in pressure is

where K is a number which varies between 1 and √2. When the vortices are confined to cubical partitions, the case most nearly analogous to that of free turbulence, K = 1·06, so that the conjecture which I made some years ago, that would be equal to is probably nearly correct.

It is our purpose in this paper to present concise proofs of four theorems which take up the greater part of a paper due to Brudno (1). The proofs of Theorems 1 and 2 have appeared already ((2), (3)), but we present them again so that comparisons can be made with the other two.

A. J. Miller has proposed a stochastic model for the study of highway traffic in one direction along a two-lane road in which the desired speed of a vehicle is sampled from a continuous probability distribution and queues of vehicles are Poisson distributed on the highway. Miller has derived the equilibrium expression for the relation between the spacial densities of all vehicles and the spacial densities of those which are freely travelling. This relationship takes the form of a non-linear integral equation which is left unsolved. The present model differs from the original only in the assumption of a discrete distribution of desired speeds. Although the derivations of the equilibrium equations are based upon different arguments from those of Miller, these relations transform to the corresponding integral equations in the limit of a continuous speed distribution. The main body of the paper is devoted to a detailed investigation of the case of two speeds and asymptotic results are obtained for three speeds.

In this paper formulae are developed for the first and second focal lengths, and the positions of the first and second principal planes of a type of electrostatic lens which has been the subject of study (mostly experimental) in several previous papers. The lens, which is commonly used in electron optical devices, lends itself to a theoretical study, although this does not appear to have been attempted before. It consists of two equal semi-infinite cylinders placed end to end so that their axes coincide and the ends are separated by a small gap. If the cylinders are at potentials V1 and V2 and we write σ = V2/V1, the system behaves as an electron lens when σ > 0 and as an electron mirror when σ < 0. In the latter case some experimental results have been given by Nicoll(1) who also studied the focusing action in the case σ > 0 and, in particular, the formation of intermediate images when σ ≪ 1 and when σ ≫ 1. But for the precise formulation of the relationship between σ and the number of cross-overs a theoretical study, based on the paraxial equation, would be necessary. The problem will be indicated below. An experimental determination of the lens characteristics for values of σ from about 2 to 15 and for several gap widths has been made by Spangenberg(2), whose results will be compared with those obtained in the present paper. The two-cylinder lens has also been studied by Klemperer and Wright(3) using an experimental and a numerical (trigonometrical) method, and some crude analytical results have been given by Gray(4).

The braid group on n + 1 strings has the presentation

where xi corresponds to the single crossing of the i string over the i + 1 string, and rij is a commutator when i < j − 1, and a braid relator when i = j − 1. B1 is the trivial group and B2 is infinite cyclic; we shall assume n ≥ 2 throughout.

Let M be a closed, connected, orientable 3-manifold. In Row [10], Jaco and Myers [3] and Myers [7], it was pointed out that the topological type of M is closely related to the knot theory in M. Therefore it is an interesting problem to find knots in M with nice properties. Alexander proved M contains a fibred link (see [9]). Myers proved, in [7], M contains a hyperbolic knot, and, in [8], every link in M is concordant to a hyperbolic link. In this paper we consider the fibred version of his results.

The helical solutions of the Frenkel-Thomas equations for a free spinning particle are discussed following manifestly covariant lines. For the purposes of expressing the equations in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian form, the definition of spin by H. C. Corben is not entirely satisfactory being frame-dependent. The use of a spin ‘four-vector’ is discussed which makes the solution of the equations shorter and more elegant than that of Corben. Such a derivation necessitates the use of the Frenet-Serret formulae. By basing a Lagrangian formalism on this definition of spin we show that the covariant Euler-Lagrange equations (with multipliers) lead directly to the Frenkel-Thomas equations. Such a derivation is thus an improvement on those of other authors and suggests a more suitable canonical formalism for these equations.

In this paper the values of m(6)2,9, m(5)2,8 and m(5)2,9 have been determined as well as improved bounds on other arcs, and in particular a general construction for certain large arcs in planes of square order has been given. Table 5 summarizes the known values of m(n)2, q for 2 ≤ n ≤ q and q ≤ 9.
