In this study, an overview of the current species composition of ophiuroids off Helgoland, German Bight (North Sea) is given. In addition, abundance and distribution of ophiuroids on different types of soft bottom sediments taken by van Veen grab samples around Helgoland were recorded. The literature was reviewed in order to outline the diversity of ophiuroid species over the past 130 years in the inner German Bight. In the historical literature, quantitative references often apply to verbal descriptions and thus make comparisons to modern data and assessment of possible changes in abundance rather subjective.

In total, six ophiuroid species were identified off Helgoland: Acrocnida brachiata, Amphiura filiformis, Amphipholis squamata, Ophiothrix fragilis, Ophiura albida and Ophiura ophiura. The species found in this study had also been reported by previous investigators and are regarded as ‘common’ species in the German Bight. Occasional findings in this area refer to Amphiura chiajei, Ophiopholis aculeata, Ophiocten affinis and Ophiura sarsi, which are regarded here as ‘rare’ species. These findings, however, do not indicate sustainable changes in the species diversity over time.

Apart from Acrocnida brachiata, a newcomer in the 1970s, findings of the common species mentioned above can be dated back to 1875. Therefore, a fairly stable composition of brittle stars is represented in the inner German Bight during the past 130 years.

The feeding biology of bahia sprat (Rhinosardinia bahiensis) was studied in two habitats of a tropical semi-arid estuary, on the north-eastern Brazilian coast. Samplings were collected on a monthly basis (January 2010–February 2011), and fish were caught during the day using an 8 m beach seine. Habitat use was size-dependent, with tidal mudflat occupied by higher size-classes than tidal creeks, which were occupied by smaller conspecifics. The diet analysis of different size-classes revealed that all sizes of fish consumed similar taxa (Calanoida, Cyclopoida and Decapoda larvae), and that the relative proportion of taxa consumed reflected fish size. Dietary differences between the two nursery areas mainly reflected prey availability. Although high diet overlap was only found between some size-classes in tidal mudflat, these results seem to demonstrate a strategy for efficient use of space potential; intraspecific competition was probably minimized by a differential habitat use patterns.

There is an important small-scale fishery using mechanized dredges and targeting clams (mainly wedge clam Donax trunculus and striped venus clam Chamelea gallina) along the Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean Sea). This study evaluated for the first time the discards and impact of mechanized clam dredging on the Catalan coast. To this end, three surveys were performed on board standard clam vessels (September and November 2016 and January 2017). Surveys were conducted in the three main clam fishing areas (Rosas Bay, South Barcelona and Ebro Delta). The composition of discards and the impact caused to discarded species was assessed using a three-level scale (undamaged; minor or partial damage; and lethal damage). Our study revealed that a large proportion of the catch (between 67–82% weight) is discarded. Even though about 63% of the discarded species were undamaged, 11% showed minor or partial damage and 26% lethal damage. Infaunal and epifaunal species with soft-body or fragile shells were the most impacted by the fishing activity (e.g. the sea urchin Echinocardium mediterraneum (~89%) and the bivalve Ensis minor (~74%)). Our results showed different levels of impact by target species and fishing area.

A new species of the family Tritoniidae is described for the tropical South Atlantic Ocean. The animal was found off north-east Brazil. Marionia limceana sp. nov. is up to 31 mm long, with a sturdy white body, of which the notum is covered with two rows of red polygons running from the rhinophores to the tail; notum with tubers; bi-lobed veil with 16 velar papillae; retractable white rhinophores; 11–14 pairs of branchial plumes; the anus is located below the 4th gill on the right side, and the genital opening is under the 3rd gill. Internally, M. limceana sp. nov. is distinguished from other tritoniids by jaws with three or four rows of denticles on the inner lips, a belt of 18 stomach plates; and the radular formula 26 × 26–32.1.1.1.26–32 teeth. The animal was found feeding on octocorals of a species of the new genus Stragulum, and is the first reported nudibranch to feed on this genus.

Since 2012, when Ophiothela was first described in the Atlantic, there has been no consensus regarding its identification. It has been described as O. mirabilis, O. cf. mirabilis, O. danae, or only Ophiothela sp. In order to fill these gaps, our aim was to test if specimens from Brazil are Ophiothela mirabilis and/or Ophiothela danae. Syntypes from the Museum of Comparative Zoology and United States National Museum, Smithsonian Institution, were used. We examined species boundaries of the small six-rayed brittle star Ophiothela using independent character sets utilizing morphology (external morphology and morphometry) and molecular data (16S and COI). Concordance was found between the analyses indicating that Ophiothela sp. from Brazil (BR), Ophiothela mirabilis and Ophiothela danae are closely related. We suggest that O. danae should be considered as a junior synonym of O. mirabilis. A detailed description of O. mirabilis BR is presented using external morphology and microstructural ossicles (arm plates, vertebra, dental and oral plates). This description includes new diagnostic features, particularly regarding its microstructures: (i) transspondylous articulation (first record in Ophiotrichidae); (ii) eight smooth knobs on the dorsal surface of the vertebrae (to date only in Ophiothela); (iii) vertebrae with distal keel divided into two separate end processes matching the two large dorsal grooves proximally (first time in the literature); and (iv) an opening on both sides of the oral plate (as seen in other fissiparous species Ophiactis savignyi and Ophiocomella ophiactoides).

A brief résumé is given of the work done on British Folliculinidae up to the present time.

Descriptions follow of eight British species, many of which are revised accounts based on personal observations.

During two sampling campaigns carried out in August 1998 and November 2002, 232 cumaeans from eight species belonging to the families Bodotriidae and Nannastacidae were collected. This paper presents the first ecological data on a shallow water tropical cumacean assemblage from the Persian Gulf, where 50% of the existing species were recently described as new for the science. Neither the environmental conditions (except for the sediment organic content) nor the cumacean assemblage descriptors differed between the two sampling periods. However, two different species dominated in each period (i.e. Eocuma travancoricum and Heterocuma inerme in 1998 and 2002, respectively) and the MDS analysis revealed differences in the assemblage composition between periods, particularly for the deepest sampling stations. An increasing density together with the increase in gravel content, and a decreasing density together with the increasing silt content characterized the distribution pattern of both the whole cumacean assemblages and the two dominant species, the latter being also positively correlated with the mean grain size and negatively correlated with depth and organic matter (E. travancoricum) and with depth (H. inerme).

In a previous paper an account was given of the breeding and growth of Sagitta setosa throughout a year (2). The results appeared to show that the last spawning took place in October and the resulting offspring lived through November and December without maturing and that by February there were indications that a number were spawning. At the end of the following April and beginning of May a complete spawning population was formed. Owing to the large size at which these matured it was assumed (2, p. 148) that they had been the offspring of adults spawning in February. The true trend of events was however by no means clear as the increase in average size from January to May was very even (2, Plate II). There was a distinct difference at this period between S. elegans and S. setosa. In S. elegans a spawning population of individuals all about the same length was produced in February which apparently gave rise to a brood which had grown to a large size by April and May, and the change in size from February to May was much more abrupt than in S. setosa (1, Plate I). It was clear that while the February curve for S. elegans showed very little variation in size for the majority of the population caught, the population in May tended to be very widely dispersed. In S. setosa, on the other hand, there was a gradual narrowing down of the dispersion until a spawning population with little variation in length was produced by May.

The diversity and distribution of the Bivalvia fauna is examined in the various seas of Greek territorial waters. There is a statistically significant correlation between the bibliographical sources and the recorded variety of Bivalvia at any given area, with the deeper areas containing fewer species. Attention is given to some species ‘introduced’ into the area.

Cluster analysis, based on the species present at 30 regions which represent distinct geographical and ecological units, do not show any differentiation that corresponds to a geographical pattern. However, a distinct group is associated with the deeper open areas, which suggests that ecological parameters, such as depth and degree of enclosure, play an important role in the distribution of species.

An investigation into the natural regime of coastal suspended solids before discharge of potash mining waste is described. Regular samples of suspended material were taken over the period September 1968 to August 1970. Statistical analyses showed significant differences in suspended solid values between the months and between inshore and offshore sampling stations. There was no significant difference between sampling points along the coast. The inshore suspended solid values were low from May to September. At other months and at the offshore stations there was a gradual change from summer (low) to winter (high) values and vice versa.

Sea temperature, sea state, tidal range and river flow correlated significantly with suspended solid values. It is suggested that wave action, tidal currents and river flow control most of the variation in load of suspended matter off the N. Yorkshire coast. The significant negative correlation between temperature and suspended solid values is not regarded as a causal relationship. Low temperatures are associated with high wave activity and high river flow rates; factors which are more likely to have a causal relationship with suspended solid loads than temperature. Thus, suspended matter variations off the Yorkshire coast are probably determined by physical rather than biological temperature-dependent processes.

From multiple linear regression analyses, sea state, tidal range and river flow were found to account for 64·1% of the variation of the inshore suspended solid values and 52·4% of the variation of offshore values. Using the multiple regression equations as mathematical models it was possible to derive accurate predictions of the natural suspended solid load.

Food of Seriola lalandi was mainly composed of juveniles of horse mackerel (Trachurus lathami) (%IRI = 99.66) showing the species as carnivorous feeders predating on small pelagic organisms.

The taxonomy of six species and one subspecies of Natatolana, which have previously been recorded from the north Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, is reviewed. Natatolana caeca, N. gallica, N. gracilis and N. neglecta are redescribed from the type material. The location of possible type material of N. borealis is reported and a redescription of this species is provided, based on material from the type locality. Natatolana neglecta var. imicola is recognized as a valid species. Natatolana schtnidti is regarded as a junior synonym of N. imicola based on comparison of type material and this material is used to redescribe the species. Distribution records for these species are summarized from examination of material held in various collections and a key to separate these species is provided.

One of the lobsters kept in the tanks of the Plymouth Laboratory moulted on the night of 2 0 August 1940. This opportunity was taken to examine the changes in water content and osmotic pressure of the freshly moulted as compared with unmoulted lobsters. Though only one recently moulted individual has been examined, the results seem to be worthy of note since so far as we are aware no data are available on the subject in regard to Homarus. The biology of moulting among lobsters has received the attention of many investigators (vide Herrick (1895) and Drach (1939) for summary and literature).

The water content was determined by distilling the fresh lobster together with a known weight of sea water under xylol. This method is a modification of that of Dean and Stark which one of us (A. G. L.) has tried on a number of animals and found to give accurate results. The density was estimated by a modification of a method previously described (Lowndes, 1938). Osmotic pressure of blood and the external medium were measured by Baldes's (1934) modification of the Hill thermoelectric technique, as employed by one of us (N. K. P.) in the study of prawns and other crustaceans. The water content of the moulted skin was calculated from its dry weight taken after dehydrating in a hot air oven for 48 hr. at 105° C. Osmotic pressure was measured 17±6 hr. after moult; density and water content after 34±6hr. The temperature of sea water at which the density was estimated was 17° C.

In making benthic surveys it is often difficult to extract all the animals from the various sediments in good condition. Even the IBP Handbook (Holme & Mclntyre, 1971) does not give comprehensive details of methods for extracting animals from the complete range of sediment types. The greatest difficulty is presented by clays and compacted silt. In recent work we have had very satisfactory results by using the following procedure. Core and grab samples taken in the field are stored in seal-tight buckets for processing in the laboratory. In the case of grab samples taken from boats, preliminary sieving is performed on site and only the resistant sediments returned to the laboratory. The samples are broken into pieces of approximately 100 cm3 or less and stored in 5 % formaldehyde solution using a volume about three times that of the sediment. This serves to fix and preserve the fauna and also helps in the breakdown of clays. At this stage samples may be stored for a long time. Wherever layers of soft mud are found among the resistant material they are washed off, sieved and the fauna preserved separately. The resistant samples are then frozen in a domestic freezer and left for 24 h before thawing. The freezing is very effective in breaking down resistant sediments into small particles, thus releasing the animals, which can readily be removed by elutriation. Normally, most animals seem to be adversely affected by freezing in much the same way as some vegetables lose their consistency when frozen (an exception to this are members of the polychaete family Phyllodocidae). However, the prior treatment with formalin seems to protect the tissues from damage by freezing.

The response of the shore crab Gaetice depressus to predation risk stimuli of either the octopus Octopus vulgaris or crushed conspecifics was examined at two different time phases in the activity rhythm (active and inactive period) by laboratory experiments. When octopus chemical stimuli were introduced to the experimental aquarium, the crab activity decreased in the active period (night) but not in the inactive period (daytime). When the chemical stimuli of crushed G. depressus were introduced, the activity of the crabs increased in the inactive period although the stimuli decreased the activity in the active period. This indicates that G. depressus adjust their anti-predator response according to a combination of the type of predation risk and also the activity rhythm.

Polychaete worms are known to thrive in extreme environmental conditions, however little is known about how polychaete species will respond to major climatic stressors, such as ocean acidification. Here, we examined the distribution of Fabriciidae (Annelida, Sabellida) species along a gradient of ocean acidification, caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) vent emissions in a shallow, coastal system off the island of Ischia (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). A total of 265 specimens of Fabriciidae, representing six species from five genera, were collected along the gradient. Most of the species were found across the entire CO2 gradient, suggesting polychaetes may have a high tolerance for ocean acidification in the future. Two of the species were new to science, and two of the genera were previously unrecorded in the Mediterranean. A full description of the new species Brifacia aragonensis sp. nov. and Parafabricia mazzellae sp. nov. is given, both of which were most abundant in the most acidified areas (pH 6.6–7.2). The geographical distribution and ecology of the new taxa, as well as of the other fabriciid species collected, is discussed. Taxonomic keys to identify the Fabriciidae species currently recorded in the Mediterranean Sea are also provided.

In 1926 Pelseneer discovered the eggs of Trivia europea on the French coast. These he found were laid in capsules embedded in the compound ascidian Polyclinum luteum, the molluse biting a hole and laying its eggs in a vase-like capsule completely enveloped in the ascidian except for the wide lip of the vase which projects freely and can be easily seen with the naked eye (Pelseneer, 1926, Figs. 11–12). He also hatched some larvae from these eggs which were very interesting, as they possessed an accessory shell somewhat similar in shape to the Echinospira of Lamellaria perspicua. He did not obtain the eggs directly from the Trivia and was not able to keep the larvæ alive more than a few days. In his paper he expresses the hope that some worker will confirm his observations experimentally. This I am now able to do, having procured the eggs actually laid by the Trivia, hatched them out and kept them alive for more than a week, afterwards collecting the larvæ from the plankton from stages which exactly corresponded with those from the egg up to late stages which metamorphosed into young Trivia, and young stages of Trivia feeding on compound ascidians which corresponded with the metamorphosed forms.

Trivia europea is common at Plymouth between tide-marks and in a few fathoms of water; occasionally further out in deeper water. Records are available from the shore to the region beyond the Eddystone.

The feeding habits of Polyacanthonotus rissoanus, the sixth most abundant species below 1000 m on the deep slope of the Catalan Sea (western Mediterranean), were studied in the Mediterranean Sea. Samples were obtained at depths between 1000 and 2250 m. Diet was analysed for two seasons (summer and autumn) and three different bathymetric strata. The most important food items found were small epibenthic and suprabenthic crustaceans and polychaetes, and occasionally other groups such as Priapulida, Gastropoda and Foraminifera. At 1000–1425 m, the mysids were preferential prey, while in summer at all depths analysed, isopods were a dominant prey. Polychaetes have certain incidence in the diet only at 1000–1425 m, being a dominant prey in autumn. Individuals at the 1000–1425 m depth ingest larger numbers of prey of higher average sizes than those at 1425–2250 m. The scarcity of resources below 1200–1400 m resulted in diversification of diet and encouraged preying on deposited foraminiferans, molluscs or moving copepods.

The pink shrimp Dichelopandalus bonnieri Caullery, 1896, is widely distributed on North Atlantic coasts; it is recorded from the Bay of Biscay, south and west Norway, Scottish and Irish Coasts, South of Iceland and the east coast of North America on muddy substrates in depths ranging from 40 m to 1200 m (Kemp, 1910).

Investigating the spatio-temporal patterns of planktonic larvae is fundamental to studies regarding stock assessment and larval dispersal of commercial and non-commercial, i.e. invasive or rare marine invertebrates. Because of the difficulty involved in morphological identification of marine invertebrate larvae, various molecular methods based on PCR have been used to enhance taxonomic resolution. In previous studies, different methods for the preservation or pretreatment of larvae were applied in each case. However, no comparative studies have been conducted to determine the optimal method for PCR testing for bivalve larvae, and no information is available regarding the selection of an appropriate method.

This study compared the PCR success rate of 6 pretreatment methods for larvae of the Mediterranean blue mussel, which was preserved using different fixatives (70% ethanol, 100% ethanol, 70% acetone and 10% formalin). The results revealed that the success rate of PCR was different for each pretreatment; moreover, the use of ammonium sulphate and Tween 20 buffer with proteinase K digestion was found to be the most effective method. Some pretreatments showed lower success rates for long-fixed larvae than for short-fixed larvae for formalin-fixed larvae; however, the success rate of PCR amplification for ethanol-fixed larvae pretreated by this method did not decrease through 1-year fixation. In addition, this pretreatment showed a high success rate for different fixation periods. These findings suggest that the selection of the pretreatment method is critically important for successfully amplifying larval DNA and that the pretreatment involving the use of ammonium sulphate prior to PCR amplification enables the use of fixatives for preserving bivalve larvae. This method will be utilized in various field studies and molecular genetic studies.
