Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean is renowned for its globally-important nesting population of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) that has been the subject of long-term research. By comparison, very little is known about the apparently small population of hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) that have been recorded in its waters, thousands of kilometres from known nesting beaches. Here, we collate 10 years of in-water tagging data, opportunistic public sighting records and underwater observations to provide a baseline for future research, and present preliminary data on habitat use derived from two individuals fitted with GPS transmitters. Although public sightings were inevitably biased towards popular recreation areas, the resulting distribution suggests that hawksbill turtles occur year round in Ascension Island's waters along the entire 65 km of coastline. Hawksbills were observed feeding on benthic algae and encrusting sponges, and were frequently seen scavenging on fish discards around the Island's pier at night aided by anthropogenic lighting. Between 2003 and 2013, 35 turtles were captured, measured, tagged and then released. Curved carapace lengths ranged from 33.5 to 85 cm (mean = 48.8 cm) indicating that most (if not all) individuals encountered around Ascension are post-pelagic juveniles. Four individuals were recaptured at least once giving a mean minimum residence time of 4.2 yr (range: 2.8–7.3 yr) and a mean growth rate of 2.8 cm yr−1. Turtles fitted with Fastloc™ GPS devices remained at Ascension Island for the duration of the study (>90 days) and occupied restricted home ranges with an average area of 2.5 km2 and an average ‘core use area’ (50% utilization distribution) of 0.05 km2. Together, these results suggest that Ascension Island serves as a mid-Atlantic developmental habitat for benthic-feeding, juvenile hawksbill turtles on extended oceanic migrations before recruiting to their adult foraging grounds, likely to be located in Brazil or tropical West Africa.

Upon infesting the hermit crab Pagurus proximus the parasitic barnacle Peltogaster reticulatus typically forms a single externa on each host. In vivo, histological and histochemical study revealed that most P. reticulatus with a single mature externa also exhibited three or four primordial externae and several buds of earlier developmental stages. It is shown that stolon buds and primordial externae in P. reticulatus internae intensively express alkaline phosphatase activity, the classical histochemical marker for mammalian embryonic stem and primary germ cells. Ovaries of the most developed primordial externae were filled with growing oocytes, so the process of oogenesis begins in the externa rudiments of P. reticulatus before the externae appear on the surface of the host body. Since the interna, which is connected to the mature externa, also integrated three or four additional primordial externae and several earlier buds, P. reticulatus, a non-colonial species based on the common presence of a single externa in each host, appears to have a hidden colonial organization at the parasitic stage of its life cycle.

A description of the first known mutualistic interaction between a cnidarian and a pelagic tunicate is presented. Calycopsid anthomedusan polyps, belonging in the genus Bythotiara, were discovered associated with individual zooids of a new doliopsid (Thaliacea: Doliolida: Doliopsidae) collected from the mesopelagic waters of Monterey Bay. One hundred and seventy five polyp-bearing doliopsid colonies have been observed and 43 were collected from 1995 to 2004. Colonies were observed in situ and then brought back to the laboratory and maintained in aquaria. More than 250 individual anthomedusan polyps were removed from positions at the buccal siphon of their doliopsid host zooids and maintained in the laboratory until they released medusae. The morphology and taxonomy of the polyps and medusae are described. A unique tentacle-based asexual reproduction strategy is discussed. The relationship between the doliopsid and the polyp appears to be mutualistic, with the doliolid obtaining both nutrition and protection from the anthomedusan polyps, while the polyps gain access to a mobile, food-rich substrate.

A study was conducted over eight consecutive days in February 2010 in which daily variations in the vertical distributions of heterotrophic bacteria, mesozooplankton and ichthyoplankton at 1–1200 m in the South-western Atlantic Ocean were investigated. Diurnal and nocturnal samples were collected at an oceanographic station at four regional depths: Tropical Water (TW) (1 m), South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) (250 m), Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) (800 m) and Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) (1200 m). Bacterial, mesozooplankton and larval fish densities significantly differed between sample depths but not between sampling tow times. In total, 154 zooplankton species and 18 larval fish species were identified. The highest number of taxa was obtained from the night-time TW trawls. This depth zone had the highest densities of mesozooplankton, larval fish and bacterioplankton (auto and heterotrophic), associated with the highest temperature and salinity and the lowest inorganic nutrient concentrations. Two sample groups were identified based on their mesozooplankton and larval fish compositions: night-time TW and other water masses (daytime TW, SACW, AAIW and UCDW). Thirty-two indicator species were detected in night-time TW. The copepod Nullosetigera impar was, to the best of our knowledge, identified for the first time on the Brazilian coast. Our results showed significant variability in the abundance and vertical distribution of mesozooplankton, bacterioplankton and larval fish along the water column in an oceanic area. We have provided new data and insights on the composition and vertical distribution of mesozooplankton, larval fish and bacterioplankton in deep waters in the South-western Atlantic Ocean.

Deep water cladorhizids are now generally thought to be carnivorous. While the methods of prey capture have been established for species of Asbestopluma, and perhaps Chondrocladia, information is sparse for species of Cladorhiza. The external morphology of the deep-sea Alaskan species, Cladorhiza corona, was examined immediately after collection, and then again later using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All sponges examined had captured, and in most cases, fully encased, prey items which for the most part consisted of planktonic copepods. The hypothesis of this paper is that the primary process of prey capture is by means of a sticky substance and that prey stick to the sponge on contact. The abundant cladorhizid anisochelae do not seem to be arranged in a manner such that they can be used for prey capture as has been seen in Asbestopluma. Digestion of the prey occurs in a temporary cavity created by migrating sponge cells. Within this cavity lipid from the copepod is liberated, then absorbed and transported to the central part of the sponge. It is not known how much of the remaining tissue of the copepod is digested. Copepods have very high lipid content so their capture would provide the sponge with abundant energy from each prey item. The sponges seem to have their highest density in areas where bottom flow and migrating copepod numbers are both high.

Naticids and muricids are the main drilling gastropod families that leave a characteristic hole in their shelled prey. Drilling predation can be evaluated along spatial scales, and different latitudinal patterns (equatorward, poleward, mid-latitude peaks or no trend at all) have already been described. For Argentine Patagonia, most studies have analysed muricid predation, but scant information is available on naticid predation. This study provides evidence of predation by the moon snail Notocochlis isabelleana on a thin and fragile burrowing bivalve, Darina solenoides, along the intertidal sandflats at Pozo Salado, San Matías Gulf, in northern Patagonia. To estimate the incidence of predation, articulated specimens of Darina solenoides (N = 432) were randomly collected in the intertidal zone. Drill holes (N = 94) were recorded in shell lengths ranging between 10 and 35 mm. Taking into account previous studies in the region, the intensity of mortality by drilling (22%) constitutes a higher value than expected for this latitude. These results may help explain local patterns in a particular site in northern Patagonia which has been previously identified as an outlier, but further studies aimed at evaluating macrogeographic patterns are necessary for a better understanding of the regional factors that might be governing these predator–prey interactions.

A new species of Chloeia (Annelida: Amphinomidae) is described from deep water (750–1045 m) off southern Brazil. Chloeia kudenovi sp. nov. differ from previously described species by the extremely elongated neuropodial cirri of the second chaetiger, number and position of noto- and neuroaciculae and lack of body pigmentation. This study provides additional data on the morphological diversity of the genus.

Two new species of Munidopsis from the hydrothermal vent area, Kairei Field, Central Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean and Forecast Vent Field, Mariana Back Arc Basin in the west Pacific are described and illustrated. Their affinities to closely related species are discussed. The number of Munidopsis species associated to hydrothermal vents in the world oceans has increased to 16. The habitat of new species is briefly described and the pattern of abundance of vent associated Munidopsis is briefly discussed.

The tolerance of the European sea bass to high salinities was determined through abrupt and gradual transfers to different hyperosmotic media. Mortality rate reached roughly 50% in fish abruptly transferred to 70 psu salinity and in fish gradually adapted to 90 psu salinity. All fish abruptly transferred to 90 psu salinity expired in less than three hours. A crisis and regulation type osmoregulatory pattern, related to the range of the osmotic shock, was recorded following abrupt transfers to the tolerable experimental media. The lethal level of blood osmolality in sea bass was determined.

The duration of residence at identifiable refuges in separate territories was assessed over an 800-d period for the goldsinny, Ctenolabrus rupestris, a territorial labrid (Osteichthyes: Perciformes: Labridae), on the west coast of Scotland. Goldsinny (N=12; seven male, five female) were taken from, tagged and returned to, marked refuges using anaesthetics applied underwater. Over the whole study period two goldsinny (one male, one female) moved between adjoining territories, but most (eight out of the ten recaptured or observed) remained in the refuge in which they were released.

Brandt (1927) has summarised and reviewed our knowledge of the nitrogen compounds existing in sea-water, including nitrites. In general, estimations of nitrite in sea-water have been made colorimetrically, using the Griess-Ilosvay reagent, which has also been used in the present work. Usually the amount of nitrite found, recorded as milligrams of nitrogen per cubic metre, was small. Raben's results have been grouped by Brandt as follows, 0 mg., 48 cases; under 1 mg., 53 cases; 1–4 mg., 21 cases; 5–9 mg., 6 cases. Orr (1926) in the Clyde Area, found from under 1 mg. to about 10 mg. in June 1925, the deeper water having more than the upper layers. Harvey (1926) states that, “in a number of. water samples from the English Channel, examined either on board ship or immediately after landing, no definitely detectable traces of nitrites could be found either by the Griess-Ilosvay reagent or with the strychnine reagent without sulphuric acid, except in the case of inshore water subject to pollution. After storage-an appreciable quantity of nitrite has been detected in several instances. In water from 830 metres in the Bay of Biscay, preserved with mercuric chloride when collected, and in water at various depths up to 3000 metres, similarly preserved, collected by the R.R.S. Discovery some 200 miles west of Portugal, no nitrite could be definitely detected.”

Caprella spp. (Crustacea: Amphipoda) inhabiting the Sargassum algal community in Otsuchi Bay near unpopulated areas of northern Japan, were collected from 1994 to 2001 and subjected to analysis of butyltin (BT) concentrations. The period from 1994 to 2001 corresponds to four to 11 years after legislation limiting the use of tributyltin (TBT) on small boats and aquaculture facilities was passed in Japan. Butyltin compounds including TBT, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) were detected in all samples of Caprella spp., although the three BTs were not detected in seawater samples collected from the same area between 1997 and 1999. The concentration of total BTs (BTs=MBT+DBT+TBT) in Caprella spp. significantly decreased from 84 ng BTs/g wet wt in 1994 to 7·4 ng/g wet wt in 2001. The concentrations of BTs in Caprella spp., which have a high bioconcentration factor for TBT, are thought to reflect the average concentrations of BTs in the surrounding seawater in the previous few months. The half-life of BTs and TBT in Caprella spp. was 2·38 years and 2·07 years, respectively, which are less than half of that of TBT in seawater based on the national survey of The Ministry of the Environment, Japan. Illegal usage of TBT near the studied area may have decreased due to monitoring of BTs.

Investigations showed that populations of Cirriformia tentaculata (Montagu) at Plymouth, Coverack and Salcombe produce both free-swimming and demersal larvae from single egg batches. The proportion of free-swimming to demersal larvae varies from one brood to another but is constant in different cultures from a single brood. Control of the proportion in which the two behavioural types are produced appears to be genotypic and not phenotypic. The larval types could not be separated morphologically but additional evidence for the existence of polymorphism in the species was provided by the variation of esterase pattern between adults. The population that existed in Southampton water previous to the winter of 1962/63 and which produced only demersal larvae was probably genetically isolated from other populations of the worm and showed behaviour atypical of the species as a whole.

Introduction

Since the publication of a note reporting behavioural differences existing between the larval stages of Cirriformia tentaculata (Montagu) from Southampton Water and from Plymouth Sound (George, 1963), continuing investigations have shed more light on the problem. Observation of the Southampton population from 1959 to 1962 showed that demersal larvae were produced throughout the breeding season, from May to September (George, 1964a), whereas Wilson (1936) found that a population from Drake's Island, Plymouth Sound, produced a free-swimming larval stage in July of 1928 and 1933. It is known that some species of polychaete produce pelagic and non-pelagic forms according to the time of year (Mesnil & Caullery, 1917; Thorson, 1946). The Plymouth population was therefore re-examined to determine whether free-swimming larvae were produced during the entire breeding season.

In the course of a study involving the routine identification of Tunicata the need became apparent of an attempt being made to define more clearly than has been done the diagnostic characters of certain species. The examination of a widely-collected material demonstrates the fact that in certain species considerable variations in structure accompany changes of habitat (depth, latitude, temperature, type of substratum, etc.), while other species vary but slightly.

The discovery of a homoeomorph, Fallax dalliniformis, of Dallina septigera (Lovén) dredged with that species (Atkins, 1960) and, it is believed, sometimes confused with it, certainly by Fischer & Oehlert (1891), has made a brief redescription desirable. During the present work more than a hundred D. septigera of shell length 5–31 mm have been obtained, and most of them examined internally.

The original description in Latin—without figures—of Dallina septigera (= Terebratula septigera) was by Lovén in 1846 (p. 183). Unfortunately his description does not now clearly separate his species from Fallax dalliniformis, except perhaps his failure to mention the presence of dental plates, pedicle collar and spiculation. It is doubtful how much weight can be attached to this, for on the same page he failed to mention the presence of dental plates in Macandrevia cranium. He gave the length as 28 mm, width as 21.5 mm and depth as 17 mm.

The objective of the study was to investigate the seasonal variations in proximate and fatty acid composition of wild sobaity (Sparidentex hasta) for a one-year period during (i) pre-spawning (October–December), (ii) spawning (January–March), (iii) post-spawning (April–June) and summer (July–September). Five male and five female fish were collected from market each month and used for the study. Skinless fillets from both sides of sobaity were taken, chopped, minced, frozen and freeze dried. Freeze-dried ground male and female fish samples were pooled separately and homogenized for proximate composition and fatty acid analysis. The results of the investigation showed that the muscle proximate composition and fatty acid profile of sobaity differed significantly (P < 0.05) among different seasons with the highest muscle lipid during the pre-spawning and spawning season. Palmitic acid (C16:0) was the most dominant muscle fatty acid followed by oleic acid (C18:1n-9). The muscle docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n-3) levels in pre-spawning and spawning seasons were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those in other seasons. A good n-3/n-6 ratio (2.26–3.11) and the higher DHA levels (10.16–11.47%) observed in muscles during the pre-spawning and spawning season indicated a better nutritional value of sobaity at this time of the year.

Modular organization of colonial hydroids is based on cyclic morphogenesis during growth of their body. In many thecate hydroids (Hydrozoa: Leptomedusae) the shoots of the colony consist of a few distinct elements and possess complex spatial organization. In most cases, the evolutionary sequence of morphogenetic modifications that led to present-day organization of shoots is obscure and not obvious. One of the approaches that allow getting insight into the morphogenetic evolution in colonial thecate hydroids is to analyse the spectrum of different minor morphotypes presented in the population of the certain species. In our opinion, some rare morphotypes allow understanding and reconstructing the scenario of morphogenetic evolution of species under consideration. We describe the application of such an approach for reconstruction of the morphogenetic evolution of Dynamena pumila (L.) (Sertulariidae) with some additional conclusions.

The œcological significance of cilia and ciliary currents has been studied hitherto mainly so far as they are connected either with the epidermis or with the intestine. Epidermal cilia produce currents by which either the animal itself is moved or the surrounding medium is carried over the surface of the unmoved animal. In the latter case the ciliary currents serve for collecting substances, ordinary food and oxygen. It may be said, that the degree of specialisation of epidermal cilia generally indicates the degree of intimate dependence of the animal on its outside conditions (natural surroundings). (The cases where epidermal cilia are connected with sense organs are comparatively few.)

Most work in tunicate heart physiology has been directed towards finding the actual physiological cause of heart reversal rather than the adaptive advantage of it to the animal (see reviews by Krijgsman, 1956; Kriebel, 1968; Goodbody, 1974). Krijgsman (1956) concludes: ‘We do not know whether there is any functional significance in the periodic reversal of beat. One can see no reason why a permanent one-way circulation should not be efficient. Presumably the cause of reversal is the periodic exhaustion of the pacemakers, which has no physiological significance.’ Because of the abundance of pacemaker systems in nature in which periodic exhaustion does not take place, this conclusion should be re-examined.
