A class of Markov chains is considered for which a certain property of the tail events makes bounded harmonic functions obtainable from bounded space-time harmonic functions. Applications to almost surely convergent Markov chains are given and, in particular, a representation of Martin-Doob-Hunt type is derived for all bounded harmonic functions of a finite mean supercritical branching process.

We construct combinatorial bases of the $T$-equivariant cohomology $H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4},k)$ of the Bott–Samelson variety $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}$ under some mild restrictions on the field of coefficients $k$. These bases allow us to prove the surjectivity of the restrictions $H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4},k)\rightarrow H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{-1}(x),k)$ and $H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4},k)\rightarrow H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}\setminus \unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{-1}(x),k)$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}:\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}\rightarrow G/B$ is the canonical resolution. In this paper we make use of semigroup methods on the space of compactly supported measures to obtain a Bochner representation for α-bounded positive-definite functions on a commutative hypergroup.

It is shown that a so-called shortly connected combinatorial inverse semigroup is strongly lattice-determined “modulo semilattices”. One of the consequences of this theorem is the known fact that a simple inverse semigroup with modular lattice of full inverse subsemigroups is strongly lattice-determined [7]. The partial automorphism semigroup of an inverse semigroup S consists of all isomorphisms between inverse subsemigroups of S. It is proved that if S is a shortly connected combinatorial inverse semigroup, T an inverse semigroup and the partial automorphism semigroups of S and T are isomorphic, then either S and T are isomorphic or they are dually isomorphic chains (with respect to the natural partial order); moreover, any isomorphism between the partial automorphism semigroups of S and T is induced either by an isomorphism or, if S and T are dually isomorphic chains, by a dual isomorphism between S and T. Counter-examples are constructed to demonstrate that the assumptions about S being shortly connected and combinatorial are essential.

We characterize Hermitian cones among the surfaces of degree $q+1$ of $\text{PG}(3,q^{2})$ by their intersection numbers with planes. We then use this result and provide a characterization of nonsingular Hermitian varieties of $\text{PG}(4,q^{2})$ among quasi-Hermitian ones.

A maximal tolerance of a lattice L without infinite chains is either a congruence or a central relation. A finite lattice L is order-polynomially complete if and only if L is simple and has no central relation.

The notion of weak compactness plays an important role in normed linear space theory. However in many instances norm completeness of the space is an important assumption for obtaining relevant theorems. This note generalises the concept of weak compactness for subsets of normed linear spaces and obtains generalisations of known theorems including that of Eberlein [2]. We use the methods and techniques of “non-standard analysis” in the proofs; several useful non-standard results for normed linear spaces are given.

Let S be a compact semigroup and f a continuous homomorphism of S onto the (compact) semigroup T. What can be said concerning the relations among S, f, and T? It is to one special aspect of this problem which we shall address ourselves. In particular, our primary considerations will be directed toward the case in which T is a standard thread. A standard thread is a compact semigroup which is topologically an arc, one endpoint being an identity element, the other being a zero element. The structure of standard threads is rather completely determined e.g. see [20]. Among the standard threads there are three which have a rather special rôle. These are as follows: A unit thread is a standard thread with only two idempotents and no nilpotent element. A unit thread is isomorphic to the usual unit interval [14]. A nil thread again has only two idempotents but has a non-zero nilpotent element. A nil thread is isomorphic with the interval [½, 1], the multiplication being the maximum of ½ and the usual product — or, what is the same thing, the Rees quotient of the usual [0, 1] by the ideal [0,½ ]. Finally there is the idempotent thread, the multiplication being x o y = mm (x, y). These three standard threads can often be considered separately and, in this paper, we reserve the symbols I1I2 and I3 to denote the unit, nil and idempotent threads respectively. Also, throughout this paper, by a homomorphism we mean a continuous homomorphism.

Let A be a complex sequentially complete, locally convex (not necessarily commutative) topological algebra with the defining family {pα}α∈D of seminorms in which (*): for each sequence xn → 0 there exists xm ∈ {xn} such that xmk → 0 as k → ∞. Then each multiplicative linear functional on a Fréchet algebra satisfying the above condition (*) is Continuous.

These results answer open questions (1) and (2) (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 11, 1953) in the affirmative for Fréchet algebras in which (*) holds. It is also shown that a positive linear functional on such algebras with identity and continuous involution is continuous, thus partially generalizing Shah's result (1959).

We give a systematic treatment of caloric measure for arbitrary open sets. The caloric measure is defined only on the essential boundary of the set. Our main result gives criteria for the resolutivity of essential boundary functions, and their integral representation in terms of caloric measure. We also characterize the caloric measure null sets in terms of the boundary singularities of nonnegative supertemperatures.

The main results of the paper give necessary and sufficient conditions as well as sufficient conditions that continuous bijections of a manifold onto itself be homeomorphisms. Such conditions include the embedding of manifolds, preserving ends, preserving closed half-rays and restrictions on boundary components. A number of counterexamples are given to likely conjectures.
