We prove an observation associated with η3(τ)η3(7τ) which is found on page 54 of Ramanujan’s Lost Notebook (S. Ramanujan, The Lost Notebook and Other Unpublished Papers (Narosa, New Delhi, 1988)). We then study functions of the type η3(aτ)η3(bτ) with a+b=8.

If h is the composition of two formal power series f and g, and if h is even, what can be said about f and g? Some partial answers are given here.

Let $I(n)$ denote the number of isomorphism classes of subgroups of $(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^{\times }$, and let $G(n)$ denote the number of subgroups of $(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^{\times }$ counted as sets (not up to isomorphism). We prove that both $\log G(n)$ and $\log I(n)$ satisfy Erdős–Kac laws, in that suitable normalizations of them are normally distributed in the limit. Of note is that $\log G(n)$ is not an additive function but is closely related to the sum of squares of additive functions. We also establish the orders of magnitude of the maximal orders of $\log G(n)$ and $\log I(n)$.

Suppose that G is a π-separable group. Let N be a normal π1-subgroup of G and let H be a Hall π-subgroup of G. In this paper, we prove that there is a canonical basis of the complex space of the class functions of G which vanish of G-conjugates ofHN. When N = 1 and π is the complement of a prime p, these bases are the projective indecomposable characters and set of irreduciblt Brauer charcters of G.

The subject matter of this note is the notion of a dependence structure on an abstract set. There are a number of different approaches to this topic and it is known that many of these lead to precisely the same structure. Axioms are given here to specify the minimal dependent sets for such a structure. They are closely related to conditions introduced by Hassler Whitney in [1] and to a certain “elimination axiom” for the independent sets.

This paper inverstigates the automorphism groups of Cayley graphs of metracyclic p-gorups. A characterization is given of the automorphism groups of Cayley grahs of a metacyclic p-group for odd prime p. In particular, a complete determiniation of the automophism group of a connected Cayley graph with valency less than 2p of a nonabelian metacyclic p-group is obtained as a consequence. In subsequent work, the result of this paper has been applied to solve several problems in graph theory.

Let R be a ring in which the multiplicative semigroup is completely semisimple. If R has the maximum (respectively, minimum) condition on principal multiplicative ideals. then R is semiprime artinian (respectively, a direct sum of dense rings of finite-rank linear transformations of vector spaces over division rings).

The object of this paper is to study the sequence of torsion-free ranks of the quotients by the terms of the lower central series of a finitely generated group. This gives rise to the introduction into the study of finitely generated, residually torison-free nilpotent groups of notions relating to the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. These notions are explored here. The main result concerning the sequences alluded to is the proof that there are continuously many such sequences.

This note investigates torsion-free abelian groups G of finite rank which embed, as subgroups of finite index, in a finite direct sum C of subgroups of the additive group of rational numbers. Specifically, we examine the relationship between G and C when the index of G in C is minimal. Some properties of Warfield duality are developed and used (in the case that G is locally free) to relate our results to earlier ones by Burkhardt and Lady.

These generalizations of Hardy's Integral Inequality are generalizations of some inequalities of B. G. Pachpatte.

We study the last passage time and its asymptotic distribution for minimum contrast estimators defined through the minimization of a convex criterion function based on U-functionals. This includes cases of non-smooth estimators for vector valued parameters. We also derive a Bahadur-type representation and the law of iterated logarithms for such estimators.

It is well known that every elliptic curve over the rationals admits a parametrization by means of modular functions. In this short note, we show that only finitely many elliptic curves over $\mathbf{Q}$ can be parametrized by modular units. This answers a question raised by W. Zudilin in a recent work on Mahler measures. Further, we give the list of all elliptic curves $E$ of conductor up to 1000 parametrized by modular units supported in the rational torsion subgroup of $E$. Finally, we raise several open questions.

A square matrix A is transposable if P(RA) = (RA)T for some permutation matrices p and R, and symmetrizable if (SA)T = SA for some permutation matrix S. In this paper we find necessary and sufficient conditions on a permutation matrix P so that A is always symmetrizable if P(RA) = (RA)T for some permutation matrix R.

A construction is given for a non-desarguesian projective plane P and an absolute-point free polarity on P such that the group of collineations of P which commute with the polarity is isomorphic to an arbitrary preassigned finite group.

We show that every one-codimensional closed two-sided ideal in a boundedly approximately contractible Banach algebra has a bounded approximate identity. We use this to give a complete characterization of bounded approximate contractibility of Beurling algebras associated to symmetric weights. We give a slight modification of a criterion for bounded approximate contractibility. We use our criterion to show that, for the quasi-SIN groups, in the presence of a certain growth condition on a weight, the associated Beurling algebra is boundedly approximately amenable if and only if it is boundedly approximately contractible. We show that approximate amenability of a Beurling algebra on an IN group necessitates the amenability of the group. Finally, we show that, for every locally compact abelian group, in the presence of a growth condition on the weight, 2n-weak amenability of the associated Beurling algebra is equivalent to every point-derivation vanishing at the augmentation character.

Then it is well-known (Harris [1], p. 143) that, provided G(O+)-G(O-) 0 and G is not a lattice distribution, M(t) is given asymptotically by where c is the unique positive value of p satisfying the equation .

In many respects the theory of semi-prime rings (i.e. rings without proper nilpotents) is similar to that for lattice-ordered groups. In this paper semi-prime rings are faithfully represented as subrings of continuous global sections of sheaves of integral domains with Boolean base spaces. This representation allows a simple description of a particular extension of a semi-prime ring as the corresponding ring of all continuous global sections. The ideals in a semi-prime ring R that give rise to the stalks in the sheaf representation are then characterized when R is projectable. Finally equivalent conditions are given for a semi-prime ring R to satisfy a condition, that in the case of lattice-groups, was termed “weak projectability” by Spirason and Strzelecki [8]. Some of the results that are common to semi-prime rings and lattice-groups (and semi-prime semigroups) have been extended to certain universal algebras by Davey [3].

We introduce a class of inverse semigroups of injective transformations and our main result concerns isomorphisms between two such semigroups. This result is then applied to semigroups of homeomorphisms between closed subsets of a T1 topological space, semigroups of homeomorphisms between compact subsets of k-spaces and semigroups of isomorphisms between subsemilattices of semilattices. In the first two cases it is shown that the two inverse semigroups under consideration are isomorphic if and only if the corresponding topological spaces are homeomorphic. In the latter case, the two inverse semigroups are isomorphic if and only if the semilattices are either isomorphic or are dual isomorphic infinite chains.

In this paper, necessary and sufficient conditions are established for the continuation of small oscillations of a simple pendulum as its string length is decreased uniformly to zero, and the accompanying terminal value of the angular displacement is determined.
