This paper presents an example to show that the lattice of subvarieties of 3, 9 Λ11 is non-distributive. The example is used further to show that a certain ‘canonic” description for non-nilpotent subvarieties of pp2, p prime, is generally not unique.

We say that a regulär semigroup S is a coetension of a (regular) semigroup T by rectangular bands if there is a homomorphism ϕ: S → T from S onto T such that, for each e = e2 ∈ S, e(ϕ ϕ-1) is a rectangular band. Regular semigroups which are coextesions of pseudo-inverse semigroups by rectangular bands may be characterized as those regular semigroups S with the property that, for each e = e2 ∈ S, ω(e) = {f = f2 ∈ S: ef = f} and ωl(e) = {f = f2 ∈ S: fe = f} are bands: this paper is concerned with a study of such semigroups.

The study of topological semirings, initiated by Selden [5], arises naturally from the theory of topological semigroups. It is of interest to take a known multiplication and investigate the possible additions. Selden has done this in [5] for several compact semirings.

Burkill (1957) introduced extended Riemann-Stieltjes integrals of the form ∫baƒ(x)dkg(x)/dxk-1 to provide an alternative approach to the theory of distributions. We will denote Burkill's integral by (B)∫baƒ(x)dkg(x)/dxk-1 Burkill's paper (1957) partially motivated the study of the Riemann-Stieltjes integral in Russell (1970). He showed that the two integrals are not equivalent.

Li et al. [‘Weak 2-local isometries on uniform algebras and Lipschitz algebras’, Publ. Mat.63 (2019), 241–264] generalized the Kowalski–Słodkowski theorem by establishing the following spherical variant: let A be a unital complex Banach algebra and let $\Delta : A \to \mathbb {C}$ be a mapping satisfying the following properties:

1. (a) $\Delta $ is 1-homogeneous (that is, $\Delta (\lambda x)=\lambda \Delta (x)$ for all $x \in A$ , $\lambda \in \mathbb C$ );

The following paper is a sequel to the author's earlier paper [2]. In that paper some general results were obtained which described the motion of a fluid with a free surface subsequent to a given initial state and prescribed boundary conditions of a certain type. The analysis was based on a linearized theory but gravity effects were included. Viscosity, compressibility and surface tension effects were neglected. Among the problems treated was that of the normal symmetric entry of a thin wedge into water at rest. This Water entry problem has attracted a considerable amount of attention since the pioneer paper by Wagner [5]. Both linear and non-linear approximations have been used but all papers apart from [2] neglect gravity on the assumption that in the early stages of the penetration this is unimportant. One of the objects of [2] was to determine the solution with the gravity terms retained. A formal solution was obtained but no attempt was made to analyse this quantitatively. In the present paper we examine the extent of this effect in some detail. It will be of help to the reader to have some familiarity with the first three or four sections of [2] but in order to make the present paper self-contained we shall first reintroduce the notation used there and quote the necessary results from that paper without proof.

The results described herein were obtained in connection with the development of some lattice theoretic machinery needed by Randall and Foulis in their treatment of the so-called “logic of empirical science” (See [3] for an introduction to this subject). The final product, however, turned out to be of sufficient interest to warrant its independent presentation.

We give a detailed exposition of the theory of decompositions of linearised polynomials, using a well-known connection with skew-polynomial rings with zero derivative. It is known that there is a one-to-one correspondence between decompositions of linearised polynomials and sub-linearised polynomials. This correspondence leads to a formula for the number of indecomposable sub-linearised polynomials of given degree over a finite field. We also show how to extend existing factorisation algorithms over skew-polynomial rings to decompose sub-linearised polynomials without asymptotic cost.

In his paper [1], Thron introduced a concept of lattice-equivalence of topological spaces. Let C(X) denote the lattice of all closed sets of a topological space X. Two topological spaces X and Y are said to be lattice-equivalent if there exists a lattice-isomorphism between C(X) and C(Y). It is clear that for any continuous function f: X → Y, the induced map ψf: C(Y) → C(X), defined by ψ(F)=f−1(F), is a lattice-homomorphism. Furthermore, if h: X→ Y is a homeomorphism then ψh: C(Y) → C(X) is a lattice-isomorphism. Thron proved among others that for TD-spaces X and Y, any lattice-isomorphism: C(Y) → C(X) can be induced by a homeomorphism f: X → Y in the above way.

G(n;l) will denote a graph of n vertices and l edges. Let f0(n, k) be the smallest integer such that there is a G (n;f0(n, k)) in which for every set of k vertices there is a vertex joined to each of these. Thus for example fo = 3 since in a triangle each pair of vertices is joined to a third. It can readily be checked that fo = 5 (the extremal graph consists of a complete 4-gon with one edge removed). In general we will prove: Let n > k, andthen f0(n, k) = f(n, k).

Two graphs, the edge crossing graph E and the triangle graph T are associated with a simple lattice polygon. The maximal independent sets of vertices of E and T are derived including a formula for the size of the fundamental triangles. Properties of E and T are derived including a formula for the size of the maximal independent sets in E and T. It is shown that T is a factor graph of edge-disjoint 4-cycles, which gives corresponding geometric information, and is a partition graph as recently defined by the authors and F. Harary.

A topology on a set X is defined by specifying a family of its subsets which has the properties (i) arbitrary set intersections of members of belong to , (ii) finite set unions of members of belong to and (iii) the empty set □ and the set X each belong to . The members of are called the closed subsets of X. If X is any subset of X then denotes the closure of X, that is, the set intersection of all closed subsets which contain X, however when X = {x} contains one point only we will denote by . The pair (X, ) is called a topological space or, in what follows, a T-space. By a T-lattice we mean a complete distributive lattice of sets in which arbitrary g.l.b. means arbitrary set intersection, finite l.u.b. means finite set union and which contains the empty set □ It is well-known, for example Birkhoff [1], that if (X, ) is a T-space and the members of are partially ordered by set inclusion then is a T-lattice.

We prove certain Lp estimates (1<p<∞) for nonisotropic singular integrals along surfaces of revolution. The singular integrals are defined by rough kernels. As an application we obtain Lp boundedness of the singular integrals under a sharp size condition on their kernels. We also prove a certain estimate for a trigonometric integral, which is useful in studying nonisotropic singular integrals.

The work establishes the estimates of linear independence, transcendence, and algebraic independence measures of the values at algebraic points of a set of E-functions, satisfying linear differential equations with coefficients from C(z), rather close to their natural bounds.

If L is a pseudocomplemented distributive lattice which is generated by a finite set X, then we will show that there exists a subset G of L which is associated with X in a natural way that ¦G¦ ≦ ¦X¦ + 2¦x¦ and whose structure as a partially ordered set characterizes the structure of L to a great extent. We first prove in Section 2 as a basic fact that each element of L can be obtained by forming sums (joins) and products (meets) of elements of G only. Thus, L considered as a distributive lattice with 0,1 (the operation of pseudocomplementation deleted), is generated by G. We apply this to characterize for example, the maximal homomorphic images of L in each of the equational subclasses of the class Bω of pseudocomplemented distributive lattices, and also to find the conditions which have to be satisfied by G in order that X freely generates L.

The class of abundant semigroups originally arose from ‘homological’ considerations in the theory of S-systems: they are the semigroup theoretic counterparts of PP-rings. Cancellative monoids, full subsemigroups of regular semigroups as well as the multiplicative semigroups of PP-rings are abundant. In this paper we investigate the properties of Rees matrix semigroups over abundant semigroups. Some of our results generalise McAlister's work on regular Rees matrix semigroups.

The order cycle system of stock control can be formulated as follows: demands for stock occur according to some pattern which we call the demand process and specify in detail later in this section. At fixed intervals of time orders are placed to replenish stock. Let orders for stock be placed at the instants jN, j = 1,2, …; the interval [(j — 1)(N, jN) which we suppose closed at its lower end-point and open at its upper end-point, is called the j-th order cycle and N the length of this interval is called the order cycle period. We suppose that an order placed at time jN is delivered into stock at time jN + li where {li} is a sequence of non-negative random variables independent of the demand process and the order cycle period, we suppose also that the li are mutually independent and identically distributed with common distribution function L(x) with L(0 +) = 0 and finite expectation . The quantity li is called the lead time of the j-th order, that is of the order placed at jN and is supposed independent of the amount ordered. That portion of a demand, if any, which cannot be satisfied immediately is satisfied from future deliveries, thus every demand is satisfied eventually and a negative inventory or back orders can be held. We shall suppose that all order cycle periods under consideration are multiples of some fixed time interval of length τ which we shall take as our unit of time. For example, the interval of length τ could be one day and we would consider order cycle periods which were integral multiples of days. For convenience we take τ = 1 and suppose that the order cycle peiod N is an integer. In this paper we shall consider the following two demand processes.

In a previous paper ([14]) the author showed that a free inverse semigroup is determined by its lattice of inverse subsemigroups, in the sense that for any inverse semigroup T, implies . (In fact, the lattice isomorphism is induced by an isomorphism of upon T.) In this paper the results leading up to that theorem are generalized (from completely semisimple to arbitrary inverse semigroups) and applied to various classes, including simple, fundamental and E-unitary inverse semigroups. In particular it is shown that the free product of two groups in the category of inverse semigroups is determined by its lattice of inverse subsemigroups.

Integrals related to Cauchy's integral formula and Huygens' principle are used to establish a link between domains of holomorphy in n complex variables and cells of harmonicity in one higher dimension. These integrals enable us to determine domains to which analytic functions on real analytic surface in Rn+1 may be extended to solutions to a Dirac equation.

A number of constructions are given for arc-transitive digraphs, based on modifications of permutation representations of finite groups. In particular, it is shown that for every positive integer s and for any transitive permutation group p of degree k, there are infinitely many examples of a finite k-regular digraph with a group of automorphisms acting transitively on s-arcs (but not on (s + 1)-arcs), such that the stabilizer of a vertex induces the action of P on the out-neighbour set.
