We prove that a domain Ω in the exterior of a convex domain C in a four-dimensional simply connected Riemannian manifold of nonpositive sectional curvature satisfies the relative isoperimetric inequality 64π2 Vol(Ω)3 < Vol(∂Ω ~ ∂C)4. Equality holds if and only if Ω is an Euclidean half ball and ∂Ω ~ ∂C is a hemisphere.

Generalized integers are defined in {2] as follows: Suppose there is given a finite or infinite sequence {p} of real numbers which are called generalized primes such that 1 < p1 < p2 < …. Form the set {l} of all possible p-products, i.e. the products of the form where are integers ≧ 0 of which all but a finite number are 0. Call these numbers generalized integers and suppose that no two generalized integers are equal if their α's are different. Then arrange {l} in an increasing sequence I = l1 < l2 < l3 < … < ln < ….

For an open subset Ω of the Euclidean space Rn, a measurable non-singular transformation T: Ω → Ω and a real-valued measurable function u on Rn, we study the weighted composition operator uCτ: f ↦ u · (f º T) on the Orlicz-Sobolev space W1·Ψ (Ω) consxsisting of those functions of the Orlicz space LΨ (Ω) whose distributional derivatives of the first order belong to LΨ (Ω). We also discuss a sufficient condition under which uCτ is compact.

Let A be a semisimple modular annihilator Banach algebra and let LA be the left regular representation of A. We show how the strong radical of A is related to the strong radical of LA.

We have defined a mini-injective module and given some structures of self mini-injective rings and certain relationships between such rings and QF-rings in [8] and [9].

In this short note we shall study the modules dual to mini-injective modules, which we call maxi-quasiprojective modules. We shall give a characterization and some structures, in terms of the above modules, of those rings whose every injective modules has the lifting property of direct decompositions modulo the Jacobian radical (see [5], [6] and [7]). Furthermore, we shall show that the above rings are closely related to QF-rings (see [8] and [9]).

We call an algebraic group monothetic if it possesses a dense cyclic subgroup. For an arbitrary field k we describe the structure of all, not necessarily affine, monothetic k-groups G and determine in which cases G has a k-rational generator.

Hardy space theory has been studied on manifolds or metric measure spaces equipped with either Gaussian or sub-Gaussian heat kernel behaviour. However, there are natural examples where one finds a mix of both behaviours (locally Gaussian and at infinity sub-Gaussian), in which case the previous theory does not apply. Still we define molecular and square function Hardy spaces using appropriate scaling, and we show that they agree with Lebesgue spaces in some range. Besides, counterexamples are given in this setting that the $H^{p}$ space corresponding to Gaussian estimates may not coincide with $L^{p}$ . As a motivation for this theory, we show that the Riesz transform maps our Hardy space $H^{1}$ into $L^{1}$ .

We consider the two-dimensional shrinking target problem in beta dynamical systems (for general $\beta>1$ ) with general errors of approximation. Let $f, g$ be two positive continuous functions. For any $x_0,y_0\in [0,1]$ , define the shrinking target set

where $S_nf(x)=\sum _{j=0}^{n-1}f(T_\beta ^jx)$ is the Birkhoff sum. We calculate the Hausdorff dimension of this set and prove that it is the solution to some pressure function. This represents the first result of this kind for the higher-dimensional beta dynamical systems.

Given a metrizable locally convex-solid Riesz space of measurable functions we provide a procedure to construct a minimal Fréchet (function) lattice containing it, called its Fatou completion. As an application, we obtain that the Fatou completion of the space L1(ν) of integrable functions with respect to a Fréchet-space-valued measure ν is the space L1w(ν) of scalarly ν-integrable functions. Further consequences are also given.

The bidual of a unital infrabarrelled l.m.c. C* algebra E, equipped with the bidual topology and the regualr Arens product, is always an l.m.c. C*-algebra. On the other hand, a unital l.m.c. *-algebra E has the C*-property if and only if every self-adjoint element x of E is strongly hermitian (x has real numerical range), or the sets of normalized states and normalized continuous positive linear forms of E coincide. Finally, every unital cpmplete l.m.c. C* algebra satisfying, locally, the property ‘the extreme points are dense in that set of continuous positive linear forms” (antiliminal algebra) has the complexes as its only normal elements.

Let L be a linear differential operator with rational coefficients such that 0 is not an irregular singularity of L and that for sufficiently many p's the equation Lv = 0 has no zero solution mod p. We show that if u is a formal power series whose coefficients are p-adic integers for almost all p and if Lu is rational, then u too is rational.

Terminology and notation may be found in Dekker [1] and [2]. Briefly, we fix a recursively enumerable (r.e.) field F with recursive structure, and let Ū be the vector space over F consisting of ultimately vanishing countable sequences of elements of F with the usual definitions of vector addition and multiplication by a scalar. A subspace V of Ū is called an α-space if V has a basis B which is contained in some r.e. linearly independent set S.

Eshelby et al. [1] and Stroh [2] have developed the theory of anisotropic elasticity for a three dimensional state of stress in which the stress is independent of one of the Cartesian coordinates. Various problems involving dislocations in an infinite anisotropic medium are solved in the first paper, while Stroh considers dislocation problems as well as determining the stresses round a crack subjected to an arbitrary non-uniform applied stress. In this note, which follows their treatment, we consider the problem of determining the stresses produced by the indentation of the plane surface of an anisotropic half space by a rigid punch. Problems of this type have been solved by Green and Zerna [3], Lekhnitskii [4], Brilla [5], Gallin [6] and Milne-Thomson [7] but if we take Cartesian coordinates x1, x2, x3 and let the stress be independent of x3, then these authors all assume the x1x2 plane to be one of elastic symmetry. The solution presented in this paper does not require this assumption so that it has a more general application than has been the case with previous solutions to problems of this type. The first part of the analysis given here is for general anisotropy, but in order to obtain a solution to the punch problem by the method of this paper, it is necessary to consider only a particular class of anisotropic materials. The indentation of such materials by a circular block is discussed in section 4 and the results are used in section 5 to examine the case when the circular block is on a transversely isotropic half space.

We introduce the concept of strong property $(\mathbb{B})$ with a constant for Banach algebras and, by applying a certain analysis on the Fourier algebra of the unit circle, we show that all C*-algebras and group algebras have the strong property $(\mathbb{B})$ with a constant given by $288\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}(1+\sqrt{2})$. We then use this result to find a concrete upper bound for the hyperreflexivity constant of ${\mathcal{Z}}^{n}(A,X)$, the space of bounded $n$-cocycles from $A$ into $X$, where $A$ is a C*-algebra or the group algebra of a group with an open subgroup of polynomial growth and $X$ is a Banach $A$-bimodule for which ${\mathcal{H}}^{n+1}(A,X)$ is a Banach space. As another application, we show that for a locally compact amenable group $G$ and $1<p<\infty$, the space $CV_{P}(G)$ of convolution operators on $L^{p}(G)$ is hyperreflexive with a constant given by $384\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{2}(1+\sqrt{2})$. This is the generalization of a well-known result of Christensen [‘Extensions of derivations. II’, Math. Scand. 50(1) (1982), 111–122] for $p=2$.

A set with a relation is isomorphic to a group quotient under the condition described as weak homogeneity, and to the quotient of a group with relation preserved by right and left translations if the homogeneity is strengthened. A method of constructing these group quotients and, furthermore, all such very homogeneous spaces, is described and an illustrative example given.

These notes provide a concise introduction to the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups in positive characteristic, with an emphasis on Lusztig's character formula and geometric representation theory. They are based on the first author's notes from a lecture series delivered by the second author at the Simons Centre for Geometry and Physics in August 2019. We intend them to complement more detailed treatments.

We consider positive linear operators of probabilistic type L1f acting on real functions f defined on the positive semi-axis. We deal with the problem of uniform convergence of L1f to f, both in the usual sup-norm and in a uniform Lp type of norm. In both cases, we obtain direct and converse inequalities in terms of a suitable weighted first modulus of smoothness of f. These results are applied to the Baskakov operator and to a gamma operator connected with real Laplace transforms, Poisson mixtures and Weyl fractional derivatives of Laplace transforms.

The first paper (written jointly with L. G. Kovács) of this three-part series reduced the problem of determining all varieties of the title to the study of the varieties of nilpotent groups of class (at most) four whose free groups have no nontrivial elements of odd order. The present paper deals with these under the additional assumption that the variety contains all nilpotent groups of class three. We label each such variety by a vector of eleven parameters, each parameter a nonnegative integer or ∞, subject to numerous but simple conditions. Each vector satisfying these conditions is in fact used, and matches directly a (finite) defining set of laws for the variety it labels. Moreover, one can readily recognize from the parameters whether one variety is contained in another. The third paper will complete the determination of all varieties of nilpotent groups of class four.

In this note we characterize the abelian groups G which have two different proper subgroups N and M such that the subgroup lattice L(G)=[0, M]∪ [N, G] is the union of these intervals.
