We study natural families of $\bar {\partial } $-operators on the moduli space of stable parabolic vector bundles. Applying a families index theorem for hyperbolic cusp operators from our previous work, we find formulae for the Chern characters of the associated index bundles. The contributions from the cusps are explicitly expressed in terms of the Chern characters of natural vector bundles related to the parabolic structure. We show that our result implies formulae for the Chern classes of the associated determinant bundles consistent with a result of Takhtajan and Zograf.

Representations of non-type I groups G which may be expressed as an increasing union of type I normal subgroups are considered. Groups with this structure are natural generalisations of the CAR algebra (viewed as a twisted group C*-algebra) and are also group theoretic analogues of AF algebras. This paper gives a systematic account of their representation theory based on a canonical construction of one-cocycles for the G-action on the dual of a normal subgroup. Some examples are considered showing how to construct inquivalent irreducible representations (non-cohomologous cocycles) and also factor representations by a method which generalises the well-known construction of non-isomorphic factors for the CAR algebra.

We consider the cosine functional equation (see [1, 2, 3]) , where f(z) is an entire function of a complex variable z and x, y are complex variables.

Szekeres defined a continuous analogue of the additive ordinary continued fraction expansion, which iterates a map T on a domain which can be identified with the unit square [0, 1]2. Associated to it are continuous analogues of the Lagrange and Markoff spectrum. Our main result is that these are identical with the usual Lagrange and Markoff spectra, respectively; thus providing an alternative characterization of them.

Szekeres also described a multi-dimensional analogue of T, which iterates a map Td on a higherdimensional domain; he proposed using it to bound d-dimensional Diophantine approximation constants. We formulate several open problems concerning the Diophantine approximation properties of the map Td.

In a previous paper, ‘The concept of “largeness” in group theory’, a partial order was defined on the class of infinite groups, and this partial order was seen to give some precision to our intuitive notions of what it means for one infinite group to be ‘larger’ than another. The aim of this paper is to look more closely at groups which are ‘low down’ in this partial order, and to examine the interplay between properties of groups and finiteness conditions in group theory.

We present in this paper a discussion on some stability properties of line graphs. After relating the semi-stability properties of the line graph of a graph to a concept of Sheehan, we proceed to deduce that, with fully characterised lists of exceptions, the line graphs of trees and unicyclic graphs are semi-stable. We then discuss the problem of deciding which line graphs are stable. Via a discovery of the finite number of graphs G such that both G and its complement have stable line graphs, we show that P4 is the only self-complementary graph whose line graph is stable.

In this paper, we construct from any given good (3,1)-dimensional manifold pair finitely many almost identical imitations of it whose exteriors are mutative hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The equivariant versions with the mutative reduction property on the isometry group are also established. As a corollary, we have finitely many hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same volume and the same isometry group.

Bieberbach's conjecture, proposed in 1916 and still unsolved, states that if ƒ(z) = z+a2z2+… is holomorphic and univalent in the disc ∣z∣ < 1 then ∣an∣ ≦ n for each n ≧ 2, with equality for some n only if ƒ(z) is the Koebe function of is obtained from this function by a rotation. Very recently Bombieri has succeeded in showing that if ƒ(z) is sufficiently close to the Koebe function, then with equality only if ƒ(z) = k(z). This had previously been proved by Garabedian, Ross and Schiffer [3] for even values of n.

We characterize the generalized ordered topological spaces X for which the uniformity (X) is convex. Moreover, we show that a uniform ordered space for which every compatible convex uniformity is totally bounded, need not be pseudocompact.

We consider certain affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. We give a Lie theoretic interpretation of the generalized Euler identities by showing that they are associated with certain filtrations of the basic representations of these algebras. In the case when the algebras have prime rank, we also give algebraic proofs of the corresponding identities.

Consider the action of $\operatorname{GL}(n,\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ on the $p$-adic unit sphere ${\mathcal{S}}_{n}$ arising from the linear action on $\mathbb{Q}_{p}^{n}\setminus \{0\}$. We show that for the action of a semigroup $\mathfrak{S}$ of $\operatorname{GL}(n,\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ on ${\mathcal{S}}_{n}$, the following are equivalent: (1) $\mathfrak{S}$ acts distally on ${\mathcal{S}}_{n}$; (2) the closure of the image of $\mathfrak{S}$ in $\operatorname{PGL}(n,\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ is a compact group. On ${\mathcal{S}}_{n}$, we consider the ‘affine’ maps $\overline{T}_{a}$ corresponding to $T$ in $\operatorname{GL}(n,\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ and a nonzero $a$ in $\mathbb{Q}_{p}^{n}$ satisfying $\Vert T^{-1}(a)\Vert _{p}<1$. We show that there exists a compact open subgroup $V$, which depends on $T$, such that $\overline{T}_{a}$ is distal for every nonzero $a\in V$ if and only if $T$ acts distally on ${\mathcal{S}}_{n}$. The dynamics of ‘affine’ maps on $p$-adic unit spheres is quite different from that on the real unit spheres.

Suppose A and B are continuous linear operators mapping a complex Banach space X into itself. For any polynomial pC, it is obvious that when A commutes with B, then p(A) commutes with B. To see that the reverse implication is false, let A be nilpotent of order n. Then An commutes with all B but A cannot do so. Sufficient conditions for the implication: p(A) commutes with B implies A commutes with B: were given by Embry [2] for the case p(λ) = λn and Finkelstein and Lebow [3] in the general case. The latter authors proved in fact that if f is a function holomorphic on σ(A) and if f is univalent with non-vanishing derivative on σ(A), then A can be expressed as a function of f(A).

A graph is edge-primitive if its automorphism group acts primitively on the edge set, and $2$ -arc-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on the set of $2$ -arcs. In this paper, we present a classification for those edge-primitive graphs that are $2$ -arc-transitive and have soluble edge-stabilizers.

Uniform asymptotic formulae are obtained for solutions of the differential equation for large positive values of the parameter u. Here p is a positive integer, θ an arbitrary parameter and z a complex variable whose domain of variation may be unbounded. The function ƒ (u, θ, z) is a regular function of ζ having an asymptotic expansion of the form for large u.

The results obtained include and extend those of earlier writers which are applicable to this equation.

We discuss an alternative approach to Fréchet derivatives on Banach spaces inspired by a characterisation of derivatives due to Carathéodory. The approach allows many questions of differentiability to be reduced to questions of continuity. We demonstrate how that simplifies the theory of differentiation, including the rules of differentiation and the Schwarz lemma on the symmetry of second-order derivatives. We also provide a short proof of the differentiable dependence of fixed points in the Banach fixed point theorem.

We show that for a Henstock-Kurzweil integrable function f for every ∈ > 0 one can choose an upper semicontinuous gage function δ, used in the definition of the HK-integral if and only if |f| is bounded by a Baire 1 function. This answers a question raised by C. E. Weil.

A number is squareful if the exponent of every prime in its prime factorization is at least two. In this paper, we give, for a fixed $l$, the number of pairs of squareful numbers $n$, $n+l$ such that $n$is less than a given quantity.

In this paper, the concept of essential equilibria for production economies is first given. We then prove that in ‘most’ production economies (in the sense of Baire category) all equilibria are essential.

This paper has a twofold purpose. The first is to compute the Euler characteristics of hyperbolic Coxeter groups Ws of level 1 or 2 by a mixture of theoretical and computer aided methods. For groups of level 1 and odd values of |S|, the Euler characteristic is related to the volume of the fundamental region of Ws in hyperbolic space. Secondly we note two methods of imbedding such groups in each other. This reduces the amount of computation needed to determine the Euler characteristics and also reduces the number of essentially different hyperbolic groups that need to be considered.

This paper constructs a minimal faithful representation of a semilattice of groups by partial transformations. The solution is expressed in terms of join irreducible elements of the semilattice and minimal faithful representations of groups with respect to certain normal subgroups.
