A simple technique for obtaining bounds in terms of means and variances for the expectations of certain functions of random variables in a given class is examined. The bounds given are sharp in the sense that they are attainable by at least one random variable in the class. This technique is applied to obtain bounds for moment generating functions, the coefficient of skewness and parameters associated with branching processes. In particular an improved lower bound for the Malthusian parameter in an age-dependent branching process is derived.

The aim of this paper is is to establish Hadamard's type three-circles theorems for fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic inequalities.

Let ${ \mathbb{K} }^{m\times n} $ denote the set of all $m\times n$ matrices over a skew field $ \mathbb{K} $. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the group inverse of $P+ Q$ and its representation under the condition $PQ= 0$, where $P, Q\in { \mathbb{K} }^{n\times n} $. In addition, in view of the natural characters of block matrices, we give the existence and representation for the group inverse of $P+ Q$ and $P+ Q+ R$ under some conditions, where $P, Q, R\in { \mathbb{K} }^{n\times n} $.

We show that the residue density of the logarithm of a generalized Laplacian on a closed manifold defines an invariant polynomial-valued differential form. We express it in terms of a finite sum of residues of classical pseudodifferential symbols. In the case of the square of a Dirac operator, these formulas provide a pedestrian proof of the Atiyah–Singer formula for a pure Dirac operator in four dimensions and for a twisted Dirac operator on a flat space of any dimension. These correspond to special cases of a more general formula by Scott and Zagier. In our approach, which is of perturbative nature, we use either a Campbell–Hausdorff formula derived by Okikiolu or a noncommutative Taylor-type formula.

In a group G, um (G) denotes the subgroup of the elements which normalize every subnormal subgroup of G with defect at most m. The m-Wielandt series of G is then defined in a natural way. G is said to have finite m-Wielandt length if it coincides with a term of its m-Wielandt series. We investigate the structure of infinite groups with finite m-Wielandt length.

We consider in this paper the question of when the finite sum of products of two Toeplitz operators is a finite-rank perturbation of a single Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space over the unit disk. A necessary condition is found. As a consequence we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the product of three Toeplitz operators to be a finite-rank perturbation of a single Toeplitz operator.

In this paper we study groups in which every subgroup is subnormal of defect at most 3. Let G be a group which is either torsion-free or of prime exponent different from 7. We show that every subgroup in G is subnormal of defect at most 3 if and only if G is nilpotent of class at most 3. When G is of exponent 7 the situation is different. While every group of exponent 7, in which every subgroup is subnormal of defect at most 3, is nilpotent of class at most 4, there are examples of such groups with class exactly 4. We also investigate the structure of these groups.

This paper deals with 3-forms on six-dimensional manifolds, the first dimension where the classification of 3-forms is not trivial. It includes three classes of multisymplectic 3-forms. We study the class which is closely related to almost complex structures.

For Lauricella's hypergeometric function F(n)D of n variables, we prove two formulas exhibiting its behaviour near the boundaries of the n-dimensional region of convergence of the multiple series defining it. Each of these results can be applied to deduce the corresponding properties of several simpler hypergeometric functions of one, two, and more variables.

Let {Xn: n ≧ 1} be a sequence of independent random variables and write Letand let . Suppose that converges in law to the standard normal distribution (see [5, 280] for necessary and sufficient conditions). Let {xn} be a monotonic sequence of positive real numbers such that xn → ∞ as n → ∞. Then as n → ∞ for all ε > 0. [6] Rubin and Sethuraman call probabilities of the form probabilities of moderate deviations and obtain asymptotic forms for such probabilities under appropriate moment conditions.

It is known that 4 ≤ x(ℝ2) ≤ 7, where x(ℝ2) is the number of colour necessary to colour each point of Euclidean 2-space so that no two points lying distance 1 apart have the same colour. Any lattice-sublattice colouring sucheme for R2 must use at least 7 colour to have an excluded distance. This article shows that at least 6 colours are necessary for an excluded distance when convex polygonal tiles (all with area greater than some positive constant) are used as the colouring base.

Let $R$ be a commutative ring. In this paper we study the behavior of Gorenstein homological dimensions of a homologically bounded $R$-complex under special base changes to the rings $R_{x}$ and $R/xR$, where $x$ is a regular element in $R$. Our main results refine some known formulae for the classical homological dimensions. In particular, we provide the Gorenstein counterpart of a criterion for projectivity of finitely generated modules, due to Vasconcelos.

In this paper we describe the groups admitting a covering with Hall subgroups. We also determine the groups with a π1-Hall subgroup, where π1 is the connected component of the prime graph, containing the prime 2.

Let M and N be finitely generated and graded modules over a standard positive graded commutative Noetherian ring R, with irrelevant ideal R+. Let be the nth component of the graded generalized local cohomology module . In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of Assf R+ () as n → –∞ whenever k is the least integer j for which the ordinary local cohomology module is not finitely generated.

We give a characterization of nuclear Fréchet lattices in terms of lattice properties of the seminorms. Indeed, we prove that a Fréchet lattice is nuclear if and only if it is both an AL- and an AM-space.

Several rather general sufficient conditions for the extrapolation of the calculus of generalized Dirac operators from L2 to Lp are established. As consequences, we obtain some embedding theorems, quadratic estimates and Littlewood–Paley theorems in terms of this calculus in Lebesgue spaces. Some further generalizations, utilised in Part II devoted to applications, which include the Kato square root model, are discussed. We use resolvent approach and show the irrelevance of the semigroup one. Auxiliary results include a high order counterpart of the Hilbert identity, the derivation of new forms of ‘off-diagonal’ estimates, and the study of the structure of the model in Lebesgue spaces and its interpolation properties. In particular, some coercivity conditions for forms in Banach spaces are used as a substitution of the ellipticity ones. Attention is devoted to the relations between the properties of perturbed and unperturbed generalized Dirac operators. We do not use any stability results.

Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$ be a domain in $\mathbb{R}^{m}$ with nonempty boundary. In Ward [‘On essential self-adjointness, confining potentials and the $L_{p}$-Hardy inequality’, PhD Thesis, NZIAS Massey University, New Zealand, 2014] and [‘The essential self-adjointness of Schrödinger operators on domains with non-empty boundary’, Manuscripta Math.150(3) (2016), 357–370] it was shown that the Schrödinger operator $H=-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}+V$, with domain of definition $D(H)=C_{0}^{\infty }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA})$ and $V\in L_{\infty }^{\text{loc}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA})$, is essentially self-adjoint provided that $V(x)\geq (1-\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{2}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}))/d(x)^{2}$. Here $d(x)$ is the Euclidean distance to the boundary and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{2}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA})$ is the nonnegative constant associated to the $L_{2}$-Hardy inequality. The conditions required for a domain to admit an $L_{2}$-Hardy inequality are well known and depend intimately on the Hausdorff or Aikawa/Assouad dimension of the boundary. However, there are only a handful of domains where the value of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{2}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA})$ is known explicitly. By obtaining upper and lower bounds on the number of cubes appearing in the $k\text{th}$ generation of the Whitney decomposition of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$, we derive an upper bound on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{p}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA})$, for $p>1$, in terms of the inner Minkowski dimension of the boundary.

Let M be a commutative cancellative atomic monoid. We consider the behaviour of the asymptotic length functions and on M. If M is finitely generated and reduced, then we present an algorithm for the computation of both and where x is a nonidentity element of M. We also explore the values that the functions and can attain when M is a Krull monoid with torsion divisor class group, and extend a well-known result of Zaks and Skula by showing how these values can be used to characterize when M is half-factorial.

A finite variety is a class of finite groups closed under taking subgroups, factor groups and finite direct products. To each such class there exists a sequence w1, w2,… of words such that the finite group G belongs to the class if and only if wk(G) = 1 for almost all k. As an illustration of the theory we shall present sequences of words for the finite variety of groups whose Sylow p-subgroups have class c for c = 1 and c = 2.

A star is a planar set of three lines through a common point in which the angle between each pair is 60∘.A set of lines through a point in which the angle between each pair of lines is 60 or 90∘ is star-closed if for every pair of its lines at 60∘ the set contains the third line of the star. In 1976 Cameron, Goethals, Seidel and Shult showed that the indecomposable star-closed sets in Euclidean space are the root systems of types An, Dn, E6, E7 and E8. This result was a key part of their determination of all graphs with least eigenvalue −2. Subsequently, Cvetković, Rowlinson and Simić determined all star-closed extensions of these line systems. We generalize this result on extensions of line systems to complex n-space equipped with a hermitian inner product. There is one further infinite family, and two exceptional types arising from Burkhardt and Mitchell’s complex reflection groups in dimensions five and six. The proof is a geometric version of Mitchell’s classification of complex reflection groups in dimensions greater than four.
