A rotating and magnetized three-dimensional axisymmetric equilibrium for hot plasma confined by a gravitational field is found. The plasma density and current can exhibit strong equatorial plane localization, resulting in disk equilibria with open magnetic field lines. The associated equatorial plane pinching results in magnetic field flaring, implying a strong gravitational squeezing of the plasma carrying ambient magnetic field lines toward the gravitational source. At high plasma pressure, the magnetic field becomes strongly radial outside the disk. The model predicts the rotation frequency bound, the condition for a plasma disk, and the requirement for strong magnetic field flaring.

The role of static inductance on ion beam emission in plasma focus devices, based on anomalous resistivity, is reported. The effect of gas pressure variation on the process of energy transfer into plasma is investigated and discussed by using Lee's model. The dependence of ion beam production on filling gas pressure along with change in static inductance is studied. The results show that increase of static inductance in a specific range of operating pressure can enhance the efficiency of dense plasma focus device.

Dust-acoustic and dust-lower-hybrid diamagnetic drift wave instabilities have been examined in a collisional non-uniform quantum dusty magnetoplasma. The dust-acoustic drift instability arises through the Fermi degenerate pressure of electrons for a high-density plasma, while for a relatively low-density collisional quantum plasma and short wavelength consideration, the instability is dominated by the Bohm potential effect exciting a new quantum dust-acoustic wave. In the long-range wavelength limit, dust-lower-hybrid waves are found to be unstable because of the diamagnetic drift of magnetized ions. Various possible instability conditions are found for diamagnetic drift instability.

A possibility of relaxation of relativistically hot electron and positron (e − p) plasma with a small fraction of hot or cold ions has been investigated analytically. It is observed that a strong interaction of plasma flow and field leads to a non-force-free relaxed magnetic field configuration governed by the triple curl Beltrami (TCB) equation. The triple curl Beltrami (TCB) field composed of three different Beltrami fields gives rise to three multiscale relaxed structures. The results may have the strong relevance to some astrophysical and laboratory plasmas.

A previous stability condition (see Throumoulopoulos and Tasso, Phys. Plasmas 14, 122104 (2007)) for incompressible plasmas with field-aligned flows is extended to gravitating plasmas, including self-gravitation. It turns out that the stability condition is affected by gravitation through the equilibrium values only.

We discuss the dispersive properties of low-frequency electromagnetic (EM) perturbations in the magnetized core of self-gravitating white dwarf stars with ultra-relativistic degenerate electrons. For our purposes, we derive a dispersion relation by using the hydrodynamic equations for the ions under the action of EM and self-gravitating forces, and the inertialess electrons under the action of EM forces and the gradient of the ultra-relativistic pressure. The dispersion relation admits stability of a white dwarf star against a class of EM perturbations whose wavelengths are shorter than 15000 km.

It is shown that a pre-existing electron density ripple in a dense plasma can excite electron neutrino oscillations. For our purposes, we use the dispersion relation for neutrino oscillations and derive the Mathieu equation for the propagation of neutrino oscillations in the presence of a spatially oscillating electron density ripple. The Mathieu equation predicts instability of neutrino oscillations. The criterion under which instability occurs is presented. Analytical expressions for the neutrino oscillation frequency and the growth rate are obtained. The possible relevance of our investigation to non-thermal neutrino oscillations in dense plasma environments (e.g. the supernovae, the core of white dwarf stars etc.) is briefly mentioned.

The potential distribution around a charged dust grain in an electronegative plasma is obtained by using the appropriate dielectric susceptibilities for the Boltzmann distributed electrons and negative ions, and for the inertial positive ions that are streaming from the bulk plasma into the electronegative plasma sheath. The existence of oscillatory ion wakefields is shown. Positive ions are trapped/focused in the ion wakefields, and subsequently the negative dust particles are attracted to each other, forming ordered dust structures.

It is shown that the polarization force, arising from interactions between thermal ions and highly charged dust grains, can accelerate charged dust grains and can also create spontaneous magnetic fields in a quasi-neutral dusty plasma. The present results are relevant for understanding the origin of dust grain acceleration and the generation of spontaneous magnetic fields in cosmic dusty plasmas.

The amplitude modulation of a finite amplitude drift wave by zonal flows in a non-uniform magnetoplasma is considered. The evolution of a nonlinearly coupled drift wave-zonal flow (DW-ZF) system is governed by a nonlinear equation for the slowly varying envelope of the drift waves, which drives (via the Reynolds stress of the drift wave envelope) the second equation for zonal flows. The nonlinear dispersion relation for the modulational instability of a drift wave pump is derived and analyzed. In a special case, the DW-ZF system of equations reduces to the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which admits localized solutions in the form of DW envelope solitons, accompanied by a shock-like ZF structure. Numerical solutions of the nonlinearly coupled DW-ZF systems reveal that an arbitrary spatial distribution of the DW rapidly decays into an array of localized drift wave structures, propagating with different speeds, that are robust and, in many respect, behave as solitons. The corresponding ZF evolves into the sequence of shocks that produces a strong shearing, i.e. multiple plasma flows in alternating directions.

In this letter, we propose a model to explain the disintegration of extragalactic jets and to predict the associated timescale. The model assumes that a jet is current and charge neutral as well as collimated at its source; however, the forward electron current gradually decays producing a magnetic field transverse to the direction of jet propagation. This growing transverse magnetic field eventually causes the jet to disintegrate.

It is shown that the ponderomotive force of a large-amplitude electromagnetic wave in Rydberg plasmas can generate quasi-stationary magnetic fields. The present result can account for the origin of seed magnetic fields in the ultracold Rydberg plasmas when they are irradiated by the high-frequency electromagnetic wave.

We present a derivation of the dispersion relation for electrostatic oscillations in a zero-temperature quantum plasma, in which degenerate electrons are governed by the Wigner equation, while non-degenerate ions follow the classical fluid equations. The Poisson equation determines the electrostatic wave potential. We consider parameters ranging from semiconductor plasmas to metallic plasmas and electron densities of compressed matter such as in laser compression schemes and dense astrophysical objects. Owing to the wave diffraction caused by overlapping electron wave function because of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle in dense plasmas, we have the possibility of Landau damping of the high-frequency electron plasma oscillations at large enough wavenumbers. The exact dispersion relations for the electron plasma oscillations are solved numerically and compared with the ones obtained by using approximate formulas for the electron susceptibility in the high- and low-frequency cases.

We present a dispersion relation for a plane-polarized electromagnetic wave in plasmas composed of cold electrons, relativistically hot electrons and bi-Maxwellian protons. It is shown that the free energy in proton-temperature anisotropy drives purely growing electromagnetic modes in our three-component plasma. Expressions for the growth rates and thresholds of instabilities are presented. The present results are relevant for explaining the origin of spontaneously generated magnetic fields in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas.

We present an investigation of the amplitude modulation of an external magnetic field-aligned right-hand circularly polarized electromagnetic electron-cyclotron (EMEC) wave in a strongly magnetized electron-positron plasma. It is shown that the dynamics of the modulated EMEC wave packet is governed by a cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The latter reveals that a modulated wave packet can propagate in the form of either a dark or a grey envelope soliton. This result could have relevance to the transport of electromagnetic wave energy over long distances via envelope solitons in the magnetospheres of pulsars and magnetars.

We investigate the dispersion property of a low-frequency electrostatic wave in a dense metallic electron-hole-ion plasma with nanoparticles. The latter are charged due to the field emission, and hence the metallic nanoparticles/nanotubes can be regarded as charged dust rods surrounded by degenerate electrons and holes, and non-degenerate ions. By using a quantum hydrodynamic model for the electrons and holes, we obtain the electron and hole number density perturbations, while the ion and dust rod number density perturbations follow the classical expressions. A dispersion relation for the low-frequency electrostatic wave in our multi-species dense metallic plasma is derived and analyzed. The possibility of exciting non-thermal electrostatic waves is also discussed.

It is shown that electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC)-like modes can be excited by the pre-existing electron density ripple across the external magnetic field in a dusty magnetoplasma. For this purpose, we use the ion continuity and momentum equations, together with the Boltzmann-distributed electrons, and derive the standard Mathieu equation. The latter admits unstable solutions, demonstrating that the EIC-like modes in dusty magnetoplasmas can be driven due to the free energy in the electron density ripple.

We define as the Rydberg plasma the weakly ionized gas produced in magneto-optical traps. In such a plasma, the neutral atoms can be excited in Rydberg states. Wave propagation in Rydberg plasmas and the mutual influence of plasma dispersion and atomic dispersion are considered. New dispersion relations are established, showing new instability regimes and new cut-off frequencies.

We investigate the drift dissipative instability in a non-uniform magnetized plasma composed of electrons, positive ions, negative ions and negatively charged dust particles. We use a multi-fluid plasma model and derive a dispersion relation for the electrostatic drift waves with frequencies much smaller than the ion gyrofrequencies and wavelengths longer than the ion gyroradii. The presence of the negatively charged, massive dust grains affects the drift wave frequency and the growth rate of the drift dissipative instability. The present results may be relevant to space and laboratory magnetoplasmas containing negative ions and charged dust grains.

Exact nonlinear (arbitrary amplitude) wave-like solutions of an incompressible, magnetized, non-dissipative two-fluid system are found. It is shown that, in 1-D propagation, these fully nonlinear solutions display a rare property; they can be linearly superposed.
