During a field survey in High Semyen, northern Ethiopia, two moraine complexes were mapped, the lower one extending down to around 3 750 m. Glacial morphology is best developed in the north-western and western quadrants. Moraines are deeply weathered and carry abundant vegetation. For Mounts Badda, Cilalo, Cacca and Enguolo in southern Ethiopia, possible moraines are inferred from air photographs; there are indications for more pronounced glaciation in the western quadrant, and moraines seem to extend further down than in High Semyen. Highest moraines at Mount Elgon in northern Kenya/ Uganda were found to below 3 600 m. Major moraine complexes in the mountains of Ethiopia and East Africa suggest some spatial correlation in elevation and appearance, but absolute dates are absent.

The hardness observations taken in the Canadian Snow Survey are analysed and found to depend on snow density, temperature, and crystal size. This strength property of the snow is found to be highly variable and the variability is attributed to unstable bonding between individual snow grains.

The effects of meltwater percolation on pollen in snow, firn and glacial ice are not fully understood and currently hamper the use of pollen in ice-core studies of paleoclimate. Several studies have suggested that, due to grain size, pollen is not mobilized by meltwater transport. However, these findings contradict many ice-core pollen studies that show pollen concentrations in snow and firn are much higher than concentrations found in the ice layers they eventually form. This study addresses one aspect of this question by investigating whether meltwater percolation can effectively transport pollen within a snowpack. We used nine Styrofoam coolers filled by natural snow accumulation. The coolers were tested in three groups of three replicates each to simulate different glacier snowpack conditions, and spiked at the surface with a known amount of Lycopodium marker spores. The snow was melted to two-thirds the original volume, sampled stratigraphically and tested for spore concentrations. Meltwater effluent was also collected and examined. Results show substantial vertical and horizontal spore transport during the experiment. Peak spore concentrations were found in the bottommost snow layer or in the meltwater effluent in eight of nine coolers, indicating that the majority of surface spores were transported through the snowpack via meltwater percolation and/or runoff.

With the assimilation of satellite-based sea-ice thickness (SIT) data, the new SIT reanalysis from the Towards an Operational Prediction system for the North Atlantic European coastal Zones (TOPAZ4) was released from 2014 to 2018. Apart from assimilating sea-ice concentration and oceanic variables, TOPAZ4 further assimilates CS2SMOS SIT. In this study, the 5-year reanalysis is compared with CS2SMOS, the Pan-Arctic Ice-Ocean Modeling and Assimilating System (PIOMAS) and the Combined Model and Satellite Thickness (CMST). Moreover, we evaluate TOPAZ4 SIT with field observations from upward-looking sonar (ULS), ice mass-balance buoys, Operation IceBridge Quicklook and Sea State Ship-borne Observations. The results indicate TOPAZ4 well reproduces the spatial characteristics of the Arctic SIT distributions, with large differences with CS2SMOS/PIOMAS/CMST mainly restricted to the Atlantic Sector and to the month of September. TOPAZ4 shows thinner ice in March and April, especially to the north of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago with a mean bias of −0.30 m when compared to IceBridge. Besides, TOPAZ4 simulates thicker ice in the Beaufort Sea when compared to ULS, with a mean bias of 0.11 m all year round. The benefit from assimilating SIT data in TOPAZ4 is reflected in a 34% improvement in root mean square deviation.

Digital elevation models (DEMs) from the spaceborne interferometric radar mission TanDEM-X hold a large potential for glacier change assessments. However, a bias is potentially introduced through the penetration of the X-band signal into snow and firn. To improve our understanding of radar penetration on glaciers, we compare DEMs derived from the almost synchronous acquisition of TanDEM-X and Pléiades optical stereo-images of Grosser Aletschgletscher in March 2021. We found that the elevation bias – averaged per elevation bin – can reach up to 4–8 m in the accumulation area, depending on post co-registration corrections. Concurrent in situ measurements (ground-penetrating radar, snow cores, snow pits) reveal that the signal is not obstructed by the last summer horizon but reaches into perennial firn. Because of volume scattering, the TanDEM-X surface is determined by the scattering phase centre and does not coincide with a specific firn layer. We show that the bias corresponds to more than half of the decadal ice loss rate. To minimize the radar penetration bias, we recommend to select DEMs from the same time of the year and over long observation periods. A correction of the radar penetration bias is recommended, especially when combining optical and TanDEM-X DEMs.

Calcite (Mohs hardness 3), fluorite (hardness 4) and periclase (hardness 5 1/2) have been eroded by snow blown at moderate wind velocities, at temperatures between —10 and —25°C. Future interpretations involving ventifacts and apparently wind-blasted rock exposures must take this information into account.

Lake wander is described as a new mechanism for surface lowering of ice-cored moraines. Evidence is provided from Flanders Moraine, Vestfold Hills, Antarctica (lat. 68° 38’ S., long. 78° 12’ E.). Lakes wander when steep ice scarps retreat due to collapse and melt. Rates of wander are c. 1.3 m year−1. Rates of lowering due to lake wander on Flanders Moraine are c. 0.05 m year−1, which is comparable to rates from elsewhere attributed to different processes.

The first known occurrence of outburst flooding at Ape Lake, British Columbia, was in October 1984 following the formation of a subglacial tunnel in an ice dam created by Fyles Glacier. Following tunnel closure, the lake refilled in 150 d and then a second outburst flood occurred in August 1986. During both events, 55% of the Apc Lake volume or 46 × 106 m3 was released in less than 24 h into the 50 km long, ungauged Noeick River, producing an average discharge of 540 m3 s−1. Channel and flood-plain erosion, damage to access roads, bridges, a logging camp, and an airstrip were related to the peak or maximum instantaneous discharge. In the absence of direct measurements, and to facilitate planning for future flood events, several independent methods were employed to estimate peak discharge. A modified version of the Clague-Mathews formula and the slope-area method yield consistent estimates which approach 1600 m3 s−1 near the ice-dam outlet. Attenuation of the flood peak in Noeick River is as high as 25% in the upper 12 km due to channel and flood-plain storage. Results using Clarke’s (1982) physical-based model suggest lower discharges and may be related to the irregular morphology of Ape Lake. Since Fyles Glacier is in continuous retreat, drainage around the margin of the ice dam which began in the summer of 1987 is expected to continue and no further outburst floods are anticipated.

A low-cost, compact, short-pulse ice-penetrating radar (IPR) system with a center frequency of 50 MHz for sounding glacier topography is presented. The radar was developed to measure ice thickness and to image internal structures and basal conditions of glaciers and ice sheets with a maximum range of ∼16000 ns and a depth resolution better than 2.5 m. The receiver of the IPR system employs asynchronous operation mode, avoiding the need for a cable between the transmitter and receiver. A new sampling technology using a high-speed field programmable gate array, which implements a 256-trace stacking algorithm to realize the analog-to-digital conversion, both simplifies the structure of the receiver and increases the sampling efficiency. The power consumption of the whole receiver is <1.5 W, which can be supplied by a laptop computer. Test measurements were made during the 5th China Expedition to the Grove Mountains in East Antarctica. Field tests show the capability of this system to measure ice thickness up to 650 m and to define internal layers within the ice body.

During Cook's 1772–75 Antarctic circumnavigation on the HMS Resolution, he recorded the positions of hundreds of icebergs. This paper compares Cook's observations and those of Halley in 1700, Bouvet in 1739 and Riou in 1789, with the Brigham Young University/National Ice Center (BYU/NIC) and the Alfred Wegener Institute datasets. Cook's description of the iceberg plume east of the Amery Ice Shelf and the iceberg distributions in the Weddell, Ross and Amundsen Seas agree with modern data. In January 1774, Cook reached his farthest south on the shelf of the Amundsen Sea Embayment, the site of the current International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration field study. Cook's largest iceberg had a 2.5 km diameter, where power-law models show that icebergs of this size or smaller comprise 92% of their total number. In the eastern Weddell, Cook's observation of a sea-ice tongue with a much greater extent than in satellite imagery remains unexplained. Although Riou's icebergs lie 1000 km east of the BYU/NIC trajectories, application of the England and others (2020) fracture and drift model to the trajectories removes the discrepancy and means that all the ship observations are consistent with modern observations and theory.

We studied the diffusion rate of stable isotopes of water ice in a controlled laboratory experiment, where isotopically different layers of fabricated firn were stacked. This experiment was done in order to study the diffusion rate between the isotopically different layers and to compare the measurements with forward-calculated diffusion rates of the fabricated firn stack, using three different analytical and numerical methods. The layers varied in thickness within the stack, and the studied period includes variations in firn temperature. We sampled the firn stack on five different dates along the 144 day long experiment. We obtained a quantitatively good match between the calculated and measured diffusion rates, with a root-mean-square similarity of 67–80% in the depth-averaged diffusion rates. Despite the good average match, we found some qualitative discrepancy between our calculations and our measurements. The calculated diffusion rates predict >5% faster isotopic decay of thinner layers and 13% slower decay of thicker layers than our measurements show. We speculate that grain size and grain fabric may influence the tortuosity of the firn pack, and that the current generalization of tortuosity, being a function of firn density as the only free parameter, is an oversimplification.

Models for calculating glacier mass balance are sensitive to surface reflectivity variation. Fieldwork carried out on Peyto Glacier, Alberta, Canada, contributes to the data set available for ice-reflectivity parameterization in such models. Hemispherical reflectivity in the visible and near-infrared parts of the solar spectrum was obtained for rock, snow and three contrasting glacier surfaces to examine temporal and spatial variations. Glacier-ice near-infrared reflectivity displays only minor spatial variation (0.12–0.17) in comparison with the visible range (0.23–0.40), the latter being influenced primarily by surface impurity content. Surface roughness is of minor importance compared with impurities. Temporal variation of reflectivity was weak at all glacier-ice and rock locations; slight variations observed were due to changes in either solar zenith angle or cloud amount. Snow reflectivity displayed pronounced diurnal asymmetry and a larger response to cloud cover. The minimal temporal variation in glacier-ice reflectivity simplifies its parameterization. This behaviour is additionally useful for satellite-based measurements of the reflectivity field on larger glaciers, as images obtained within a 6 h window centred on solar noon are likely to yield values which are within 2–3% of daily mean values.

The spatial distribution of geothermal heat flux (GHF) under ice sheets is largely unknown. Nonetheless, it is an important boundary condition in ice-sheet models, and suggested to control part of the complex surface velocity patterns observed in some regions. Here we investigate the effect of including subglacial hydrology when modelling ice streams with elevated GHF. We use an idealised ice stream geometry and a thermomechanical ice flow model coupled to subglacial hydrology in the Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM). Our results show that the dynamic response of the ice stream to elevated GHF is greatly enhanced when including the interactive subglacial hydrology. On the other hand, the impact of GHF on ice temperature is reduced when subglacial hydrology is included. In conclusion, the sensitivity of ice stream dynamics to GHF is likely to be underestimated in studies neglecting subglacial hydrology.

Laboratory pH analyses of glacial melt waters are unrepresentative of in situ values, due primarily to CO2 gas exchange between the sample and the atmosphere, and solute enrichment from chemical reaction with sediment and colloidal particles. A method is presented which enables field pH measurements that are reproducible within ±0.04 pH units to be made in glacial melt waters, using commonly available digital pH meters with combination electrodes.

During initial spring snow melt in May 1981 at Gornergletscher, Switzerland, melt waters in the proglacial stream leaving the glacier terminus were oversaturated with respect to atmospheric p(CO2), and rapidly increased pH during CO2 outgassing at in situ temperature and pressure. Summer ice melt from glaciers which are temperate in the ablation zone are usually undersaturated by about ten times with respect to atmospheric p(CO2), and rapidly lower their pH values to achieve equilibrium upon encountering the atmosphere, as observed at Gornergletscher during July and August 1981. Gornergletscher summer proglacial stream waters, sometimes show pH increases from rock weathering, with the rate limited by the transfer rate of CO2 across the air-water interface to drive the weathering reactions. Throughout the year, any water parcel at equilibrium with atmospheric CO2 is generally at an equilibrium pH value, if filtration prohibits solute enrichment. For these reasons, laboratory pH measurements are unacceptable for quantitative studies of melt-water chemistry and should be discontinued.

The glacier sliding theory of Nye is modified to include the effect of solutes in subglacial regelation waters on the sliding process. Motivation for this development stems from studies of subglacially formed chemical deposits that appear to be widespread on rock surfaces recently exposed by retreating temperate glaciers. These deposits indicate clearly that considerable local concentration of solutes commonly occurs subglacially as a result of the selective rejection of solutes into the melt during the freezing associated with regelation sliding. Because solutes accumulate where regelation waters refreeze, they tend to lower the temperature there and hence inhibit the heat transport away from these areas that is essential for regelation sliding. For a simple sinusoidal bed and solute distribution in the regelation water film, the modified theory shows that a maximum excess of solutes of, for example, several millimoles/1 of dissolved CaCO3 along lee surfaces relative to stoss surfaces impedes basal sliding significantly, especially if the bed roughness wavelength does not exceed about one meter.

Radio echo-sounding equipment has been designed, and used for depth sounding on temperate glaciers in Iceland. Two devices have been built. Mark I operates in the frequency band 2 to 5 MHz. The overall range is 100 to 1000 m. The arrival of the echo can be timed with an accuracy which corresponds to 20 m resolution. The equipment has been used for routine soundings on Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull for the last two years. Mark II operates at 2 to 10 MHz. The range is from 30 to 400 m and the range resolution is 8 m. The equipment has been used for successful soundings on valley glaciers.

The power consumption of the whole system is 18 W plus 72 W for the oscilloscope (Tektronix Model 465). The voltage is supplied from 12 V car batteries. The total weight of the equipment is about 35 kg plus the weight of batteries. The antennae are contained in 16 mm plastic tubes. The equipment is placed on two sledges and towed behind a snowmobile or a skidoo. A continuous sounding record is photographed from the oscilloscope.

During the 1978 and 1979 field seasons, ice thicknesses on the Quelccaya ice cap were determined using a Worden geodetic gravity meter along a west–east traverse and using a mono–pulse ice radar sounder along a north–south traverse. The maximum ice thickness measured was 180 ± 10 m. Based upon the known thickness of the ice cap and the net accumulation, depth–age calculations indicate that an ice core record covering at least the past 600 years and perhaps 1 300 years could be obtained from this tropical ice cap.

A topographic map of the Qori Kalis glacier (the largest outlet glacier from the Quelccaya ice cap) has been compiled at a scale of 1:6 000 from 1963 aerial photography. Terrestrial photography of the glacier was obtained in 1978 and coordinates of the edge of the glacier were determined photogrammetrically. Comparison of these two shows that over this 15 year period the glacier has thinned with the terminus retreating more than 100 m. The retreat measured for the Qori Kalis glacier is consistent with the behavior of other tropical glaciers.

We interpreted flow dynamics of the Kahiltna Pass Basin accumulation zone on Mount McKinley, Alaska, USA, using 40,100 and 900 MHz ground-penetrating radar profiles and GPS surface velocity measurements. We found dipping, englacial surface-conformable strata that experienced vertical thickening as the glacier flowed westward from a steep, higher-velocity (60 m a-1) region into flat terrain associated with a 90° bend in the glacier and lower velocities (15 m a-1) to the south. Stratigraphy near the western side of the basin was surface-conformable to ˜170m depth and thinned as flow diverged southward, down-glacier. We found complex strata beneath the conformable stratigraphy and interpret these features as buried crevasses, avalanche debris and deformed ice caused by up-glacier events. We also suggest that basin dimensions, bed topography and the sharp bend each cause flow extension and compression, significantly contributing to conformable and complex strata thickness variations. Our findings show that surface-conformable stratigraphy continuous with depth and consistent strata thicknesses cannot be assumed in accumulation basins, because local and up- glacier terrain and flow dynamics can cause structural complexities to occur under and within surface- conformable layers.

In order to avoid problems stemming from the accumulation of rock fragments at the bottom of the hole during conventional thermal drilling in ice, a new type of probe has been developed. In this system, the water is warmed electrically inside the probe itself and propelled by a micro-pump. In this way, the hot water sprayed towards the ice scatters the insulating layer of debris and drilling continues normally, as shown by tests on several glaciers over the past 4 years.

Previous research has documented a close association between high-resolution snow-pit profiles of hydrogen and oxygen stable-isotope ratios and multi-year Special Sensor Microwave/lmager (SSM/I) 37 GHz brightness temperature data in central Greenland. Comparison of the SSM/I data to profiles obtained during the 1989-91 field seasons indicated that δD and δ18O data from the near-surface snow at the Greenland summit are a reliable, high-resolution temperature proxy. To test this new technique further, additional stable-isotope data were obtained from a 2 m snow pit constructed during late-June 1995 near the GISP2 site.

This new profile, supported by pit stratigraphy and chemistry data, confirms the utility of comparing stable-isotope records with SSM/I brightness temperatures. The sub-annual variation of the δD record at the GISP2 site was determined using 15 match points, from approximately December 1991 through June 1995 and was guided in part by time-constrained hoar layers. The close association of these temperature proxies supports the assertion that snow accumulation occurs frequently through the year and that the isotope record initially contains temperature information from many times of the year. This is also independently confirmed by analysis of H2O2 data. The slope of the multi-year T vs δ correlation was evaluated along with the sub-annual variation in the amount, rate and timing of accumulation. These new results are consistent with those from the previous study and they also demonstrate that the snow in this area initially contains temperature and chemical records with sub-annual resolution. This encourages confident interpretation of the paleoclimatic signal variations in the GISP2 and GRIP deep cores.
