This study presents the first dataset of physical and textural properties of sea ice collected in the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean sector of the Antarctic marginal ice zone (MIZ). Observations of sea ice from this region in the austral spring 2019, including sea-ice core temperature, salinity, crystal size, texture, oxygen isotopes and stratigraphy, were used in conjunction with a Lagrangian back-tracking algorithm and atmospheric reanalyses. This method relates the reconstructed synoptic conditions to sea-ice growth along the transect. A significant difference was found between the stratigraphy of consolidated pack ice samples collected at the same latitude and spanning over 550 km eastwards. The eastward group was found to have more disturbances in their stratigraphy which is attributed to the highly variable atmospheric and sea-ice conditions together with varying wave penetration through the sea-ice pack, notably during the passage of an intense polar cyclone, while the westward group showed no signs of disturbance or deformation. These results indicate that consolidated Antarctic sea-ice floes of similar thickness and from the same latitude in the MIZ have distinct stratigraphic properties, which will influence their physical and biogeochemical features.

Polycrystalline ice is known to exhibit macroscopic anisotropy in relative permittivity (ɛ) depending on the crystal orientation fabric (COF). Using a new system designed to measure the tensorial components of ɛ, we investigated the dielectric anisotropy (Δɛ) of a deep ice core sample obtained from Dome Fuji, East Antarctica. This technique permits the continuous nondestructive assessment of the COF in thick ice sections. Measurements of vertical prism sections along the core showed that the Δɛ values in the vertical direction increased with increasing depth, supporting previous findings of c-axis clustering around the vertical direction. Analyses of horizontal disk sections demonstrated that the magnitude of Δɛ in the horizontal plane was 10–15% of that in the vertical plane. In addition, the directions of the principal axes of tensorial ɛ in the horizontal plane corresponded to the long or short axis of the elliptically elongated single-pole maximum COF. The data confirmed that Δɛ in the vertical and horizontal planes adequately indicated the preferred orientations of the c-axes, and that Δɛ can be considered to represent a direct substitute for the normalized COF eigenvalues. This new method could be extremely useful as a means of investigating continuous and depth-dependent variations in COF.

A consolidation theory is developed for an age-hardened snow under uniaxial stress in the porosity range of 35 to 55 per cent by considering one mechanism, viz. viscous flow of interparticle bonds. For a uniaxial stress σ the differential equation for porosity n in terms of time t is shown to be

where a and ν are structural parameters and η is the coefficient of viscosity of ice. Comparison of this equation and the integrated form with existing data predicts consistent and reasonable values for a. The predicted values of η/ν range from 10−2 to 102 times the published values for, η which may indicate that ν, and hence the consolidation rate, is greatly affected by the diagenetic history of the snow and the conditions of experimentation.

In this work a model of the ultrasonic acoustic emission response in snow is developed. The model derived considers the acoustic emission response in snow as a function of stress and strain. It is suggested that the acoustic emission activity in snow is a quantitative indication of the creep rupture taking place in the material. The governing differential equation is developed; an example is then presented that considers the applicability of this equation to the release of certain types of avalanche.

Evidence from aerial photographs, maps, and field checks indicates that 319 glaciers lie in cirques of the Rocky Mountains, south of the United States-Canadian border. On a subcontinental scale, the distribution of glaciers is highly clustered, with larger and denser clusters located in the northern Rocky Mountains. Lesser concentrations of small glaciers occur in the southern Rocky Mountains. The total area of glaciers in the Rocky Mountains of the U.S.A. is 78.9 km2.

The results of systematic movement studies carried out by means of an automatic camera on the Unteraargletscher since 1969 (Flotron, 1973) are discussed together with more recent findings from theodolite measurements made at shorter intervals and over a longer section of the glacier.

In addition to the typical spring/early-summer maximum of velocity known from other glaciers, an upward movement of up to 0.6 m has been recorded at the beginning of the melt season. It was followed, after various fluctuations of the vertical velocity, by a similar but slower downward movement which continued at an almost constant rate for about three months. The uplift was not confined to the section covered by the camera but occurred nearly simultaneously in profiles located 1 km below and 2 km above. The times of maximum upward velocity (increases of up to 140 mm/d) coincided approximately with periods of large horizontal velocity and occurred after increases of melt-rate.

The following explanations for the variations of vertical velocity are considered: (1) Changes of longitudinal strain-rate. (2) Changes of the sliding velocity in a channel of variable width and with a bed slope deviating from horizontal. (3) Changes of volume due to opening or closing of crevasses. (4) Swelling or contraction of veins at the grain edges. (5) Growth (and closure) of cavities in the interior of the glacier. (6) Changes of large-scale water storage at the bed.

Although all of the mechanisms (1)–(5) have some effect on the vertical ice movement, they cannot account for the observed variations of vertical velocity. We therefore conclude that large-scale water storage at the bed is the main cause of the uplift. Apparently the storage system is efficiently connected with the main subglacial drainage channels only during times of very high water pressure in the channels.

The findings are of some interest to the concepts of glacier sliding: As mentioned above the maxima of horizontal velocity—and thus of the sliding velocity—have not been measured at the time when the storage had attained a maximum, but at the time of maximum vertical velocity, which we assume to be the time of most rapid growth of cavities at the bed. This behaviour of the sliding velocity agrees with that predicted by a simple finite-element model of the basal ice on a wavy bed with water-filled cavities. In particular, the model shows that the sliding velocity is larger during the process of cavity growth than at the final stage when the cavities have grown to the size which is stable for the applied water pressure.

Radio-echo sounding (RES) is a radar technique widely employed in Antarctica and Greenland to define bedrock topography but, over the last decade, it has also played an important role in subglacial lake exploration and hydrogeological studies at the bedrock/ice interface. In recent studies, bedrock characterization has been improved through analysis of radar power echoes to evaluate the electromagnetic (EM) properties of the interface and allow the distinction between wet and dry interfaces. The RES received signal power depends on ice absorption and bedrock reflectivity, which is closely linked to the specific physical condition of the bedrock. In this paper, an evaluation of EM ice absorption was conducted starting from RES measurements collected over subglacial lakes in Antarctica. The idea was to calculate ice absorption starting from the radar equation in the case of subglacial lakes, where the EM reflectivity value is considered a known constant. These values were compared with those obtained from analysis of ice-core dielectric profiles from EPICA ice-core drilling data. Our analysis reveals that the ice absorption rate calculated from RES measurements has an average value of 7.2 dB km−1, and it appears constant, independent of the subglacial lake depth in different zones of the Dome C area.

A major consideration for maritime activity in the Southern Hemisphere is the northern limit of icebergs, or the Southern Ocean Limit Of Known Ice (SOLOKI). This analysis of historical reports of icebergs during Southern Hemisphere voyages from 1687 to 1933 provides a basis for examination of their geographical and chronological occurrence during ~250 years. The analyses use tabulated data from 742 voyages and other reports from many sources, some including first-person descriptions. While these data are dependent on icebergs being reported by mariners, as well as the variable frequency of voyages, they demonstrate distinct periods of exceptional frequency of icebergs occurring in certain localities, particularly the far South Atlantic. Based upon historical records the evidence suggests unprecedented numbers of icebergs were present in southern shipping channels in the 1890s. When these historical observations are combined with modern iceberg drift trajectories, their possible origin can be elucidated. Owing to the numbers of icebergs seen and their geographical spread, our results suggest that this was possibly the largest near-synchronous calvings in the last 300 years, and the northernmost extent of the SOLOKI.

Decadal-scale, high-resolution geodetic measurements of glacier thinning have transformed our understanding of glacier response to climate change. Annual glacier mass balance can be estimated using remote-sensing proxies like snow-line altitude. These methods require field data for calibration, which are not available for most glaciers. Here we propose a method that combines multiple remotely-sensed proxies to obtain robust estimates of the annual glacier-wide balance using only remotely-sensed decadal-scale geodetic mass balance for calibration. The method is tested on Chhota Shigri, Argentière and Saint-Sorlin glaciers in the Himalaya and the Alps between 2001 and 2020, using four remotely-sensed proxies – the snow-line altitude, the minimum summer albedo over the glacier and two statistics of normalised difference snow index over the off-glacier area around the ablation zone. The reconstructed mass balance compares favourably with the corresponding glaciological field data (correlation coefficient 0.81 − 0.90, p < 0.001; root mean squared error 0.38 − 0.43 m w.e. a−1). The method presented may be useful to study interannual variability in mass balance on glaciers where no field data are available.

Retreating glaciers are a consequence of a warming climate. Thus, numerous monitoring campaigns are being carried out to increase understanding of this on-going process. One phenomenon related to dynamic glacial changes is glacier-induced seismicity; however, weak seismic events are difficult to record due to the sparse seismological network in arctic areas. We have developed an automatic procedure capable of detecting glacier-induced seismic events using records from a single permanent seismological station. To distinguish between glacial and non-glacial signals, we developed a fuzzy logic algorithm based on the signal frequency and energy flow analysis. We studied the long-term changes in glacier-induced seismicity in Hornsund (southern Spitsbergen) and in Kongsfjorden (western Spitsbergen). We found that the number of detected glacial-origin events in the Hornsund dataset over the years 2013-14 has doubled. In the Kongsfjorden dataset, we observed a steady increase in the number of glacier-induced events with each year. We also observed that the seasonal event distribution correlates best with 1 month lagged temperatures, and that extreme rain events can intensify seismic emissions. Our study demonstrates the possibility of using long-term seismological observations from a single permanent station to automatically monitor the dynamic activity of nearby glaciers and retrieve its characteristic features.

During seismic profiling on the northwest Ronne Ice Shelf Antarctica, a rift in the ice shelf was encountered. The rift trends southeast to northwest and is located approximately 30 km inland from the present-day ice front The rift is 340 m wide and the surface elevation of the ice shelf drops by 14.65 m over the axis of the rift. The rift has an asymmetrical base with a near-vertical ice-water interface on its northeast flank and a more gently dipping ice-water interface forming its southeastern flank. The ice shelf thins from a thickness of 350 m away from the rift to a thickness of 225 m at the rift axis. The rift is the probable location of a future major calving event on this section of the Ronne Ice Shelf, an event which would release an iceberg of up to 30 km by 180 km into the Weddell Sea.

Firn samples from a 20 m. deep pit were examined by pollen analysis methods in order to confirm the stratigraphy of the annual net accumulation back to 1949. The late summer horizon separates the overlying winter layer with a small pollen content from a firn layer with a large pollen content. There are also differences in the spectra of the species which enable a seasonal separation of the layers. In addition, the mineral dust content was examined.

A digital image-processing approach is proposed which allows the extraction of two-dimensional polycrystalline ice microstructure (grain boundaries) from thin sections observed between cross-polarisers. It is based on image segmentation of colour images. The method is applied to the preliminary analysis of the shallow ( Holocene) ice of the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) ice core at Dome Concordia. Structural parameters, such as the mean cross-sectional area, shape anisotropy and grain morphology, are obtained. The interest and limitations of this automatic procedure are discussed.

Numerical methods are used to examine the interaction between the spatial distribution of the basal shear traction and the corresponding basal velocity for an inclined slab geometry. In our improved treatment, we reject the common assumption that basal velocity is a simple function of local variables in favour of a non-local treatment that includes normal deviatoric stress and takes basal velocity to be an integrated response to spatially varying influences. Computationally, one must either iterate the basal velocity with a friction parameterization that relates basal shear traction to basal velocity or, alternatively, prescribe the basal shear traction that results from bed decoupling and substrate déformation.

The average of basal shear traction over the entire bed of the ice mass is invariant under changes in sliding distribution and thus constitutes a useful reference; any local relative reduction of traction leads to basal movement, either sliding over the bed or moving with a deforming subglacial layer. The local stress réduction is accompanied by a concentration of traction up-and down-glacier of the moving base. Growth, decay and possible migration of basal stress concentrations may be closely related to short-lived sliding events and to surges.

The errors involved in ice thickness determinations in Antarctica by seismic reflection shooting, gravity observations and radio-echo sounding are briefly discussed. Relative accuracies of 3%, 7-10% and 1.5% have been suggested. Double checks of ice depths from radar sounding in east Antarctica indicate an internal consistency of measurement for this technique of <1%. Comparison of carefully executed seismic shooting and routine radio-echo sounding results against absolute ice thickness values from two deep core drilling sites show no significant differences between these two remote methods (i.e. both are better than 1.5%).

Over 60 comparisons are examined between radar ice thicknesses and over-snow measurements obtained on eight independent traverses in east Antarctica. Three traverses exhibit consistently unacceptable results-U.S. Victoria Land Traverse II (southern leg), Commonwealth Transanlarctic Expedition and the U.S.S.R. Vostok to South Pole Traverse—which probably result from misinterpretation of “noisy” seismograms. The remaining comparisons indicate mean differences, including some navigational uncertainty, of ≈3%, <8% and 5% between radio-echo and (1) seismic, (2) gravity, and (3) gravity tied to seismic determinations, respectively.

Abstract. Ice-shelf thickness and velocity anomalies resulting from ice-stream discharge fluctuations are calculated for an ideal ice shelf fed by a single ice stream and confined within a rectangular coastal geometry. Ice-shelf response to periodic forcing is found to be linear (thickness and velocity anomalies oscillate at the forcing frequency, and response scales with the forcing). Thickness anomalies are trapped near the ice-stream outlet and propagate down-stream at a slow, advective time-scale. Velocity anomalies tend to be widespread and propagate instantaneously throughout the ice-shelf environment. Ice-shelf response is sensitive to ice-stream fluctuation time-scale in the manner of a low-pass filter; longer forcing time-scales produce more widespread ice-shelf response. If ice-stream velocity and thickness fluctuations are in phase, thickness-anomaly maxima typically occur down-stream of the ice-stream outlet. This effect may determine where ice rumples and rises are likely to form in response to stochastic ice-stream variability.

The Northern and Southern Patagonian Icefields are rapidly losing volume, with current volume loss rates greater than 20 km3 a−1. However, details of the spatial and temporal distribution of their volume loss remain uncertain. We evaluate the rate of 21st-century glacier volume loss using the hydrological balance of four glacierised Patagonian river basins. We isolate the streamflow contribution from changes in ice volume and evaluate whether the rate of volume loss has decreased, increased, or remained constant. Out of 11 glacierised sub-basins, seven exhibit significant increases in the rate of ice volume loss, with a 2006–2019 time integrated anomaly in the rate of glacier volume loss of 135 ± 50 km3. This anomaly in the rate of glacier-volume-loss is spatially heterogeneous, varying from a 7.06 ± 1.69 m a−1 increase in ice loss to a 3.18 ± 1.48 m a−1 decrease in ice loss. Greatest increases in the rate of ice loss are found in the early spring and late summer, suggesting a prolonging of the melt season. Our results highlight increasing, and in some cases accelerating, rates of volume loss of Patagonia's lake-terminating glaciers, with a 2006–2019 anomaly in the rate of glacier volume loss contributing an additional 0.027 ± 0.01 mm a−1 of global mean sea-level rise.

The heat capacities of quenched and annealed heavy ice Ih were measured in the temperature range 14 to 300 K by an adiabatic calorimeter. A relaxational thermal anomaly was found at around 115K and this phenomenon was ascribed to the onset of deuteron ordering in the crystal. The average activation enthalpy of the relaxational process was determined to be (26±5) kJ mol–1. Residual entropies of the crystal were recalculated on the basis of the present heat-capacity data combined with the revised values for enthalpy of vapourization, saturated vapour pressure, and spectroscopic entropy. They are (3.47±0.41) J K–1 mol–1 for the quenched crystal and (3.44±0.41) J K–1 mol–1 for the crystal annealed at 102–106 K for 264 h. The characteristics and the origin of the anomaly are discussed in comparison with that of ordinary ice.

Continuous measurements of incident and reflected short-wave radiation have been obtained from 12 May to 17 June 1968 on the ice cover at Tanquary Fiord, Ellesmere Island (lat. 81° 25′ N., long. 76° 50′ W.). The observations were made with radiometers suspended between two towers at a height of 50 ft (15 m) to sample an area large enough to be representative of the surface of the ice cover. From the start of surface melting, time-lapse photographs were taken at intervals of 3 h with a camera mounted on one of the towers at a height of 20 ft (6 m) and slanted below the horizontal.

Values are presented, for the observation period, of incident short-wave radiation, albedo, air temperature at screen height and percentage of surface covered with melt pools. It is shown that the albedo decreases linearly with increasing area of water puddles.

The production of meltwater from glacier ice, which is exposed at the margins of land ice during the summer, is responsible for a large proportion of glacier mass loss. The rate of meltwater production from glacier ice is especially sensitive to its physical structure and chemical composition which combine to determine the albedo of glacier ice. However, the optical properties of near-surface glacier ice are not well known since most prior work has focused on laboratory-grown ice or deep cores. Here, we demonstrate a measurement technique based on diffuse propagation of nanosecond-duration laser pulses in near-surface glacier ice that enables the independent measurement of the scattering and absorption coefficients, allowing for a complete description of the processes governing radiative transfer. We employ a photon-counting detector to overcome the high losses associated with diffuse optics. The instrument is highly portable and rugged, making it optimally suited for deployment in remote regions. A set of measurements taken on Crook and Collier Glaciers, Oregon, serves as a demonstration of the technique. These measurements provide insight into both physical structure and composition of near-surface glacier ice and open new avenues for the analysis of light-absorbing impurities and remote sensing of the cryosphere.
