Observations of the water level in Beaver Lake, an epishelf lake in East Antarctica, show a regular tidal signal that is lagged and attenuated from the tides beneath the adjacent Amery Ice Shelf. The phase lag and amplitude attenuation can be created by a narrow inlet connection between Beaver Lake and the cavity beneath the Amery Ice Shelf. A forced linear damped oscillator is used to determine the inlet dimensions that are required to produce the observed phase lag and amplitude attenuation. The model shows that the observations are consistent with a tidal flow that is restricted by the drag created by flow in the narrow inlet. Analysis shows that the phase lag and amplitude attenuation of the tides in Beaver Lake has increased over the years 1991-2002, probably due to a thickening of the overlying ice shelf. The response is sensitive to subtle variations in the dimensions of the inlet.

Glaciers in the Southern Patagonia Icefield (SPI) have been shrinking in recent decades, but due to a lack of field observations, understanding of the drivers of ablation is limited. We present a distributed surface energy balance model, forced with meteorological observations from a west–east transect located in the north of the SPI. Between October 2015 and June 2016, humid and warm on-glacier conditions prevailed on the western side compared to dry and cold conditions on the eastern side. Controls of ablation differ along the transect, although at glacier-wide scale sensible heat (mean of 72 W m−2 to the west and 51 W m−2 to the east) and net shortwave radiation (mean of 54 W m−2 to the west and 52 W m−2 to the east) provided the main energy sources. Net longwave radiation was an energy sink, while latent heat was the most spatially variable flux, being an energy sink in the east (−4 W m−2) and a source in the west (20 W m−2). Ablation was high, but at comparable elevations, it was greater to the west. These results provide new insights into the spatial variability of energy-balance fluxes and their control over the ablation of Patagonian glaciers.

Once fallen, snow settles due to the combined effects of metamorphism and deformation of the ice matrix under gravity. To understand how these coupled processes affect snow evolution, we performed oedometric compression tests and continuously monitored the snow microstructure with X-ray tomography. Centimetric samples with an initial density between 200 and 300 kg m−3 were followed during an initial sintering phase and under two different loads of 2.1 and 4.7 kPa at $-8^\circ$C for ~1 week. The microstructure captured at a voxel size of 8.5 μm was characterized by density, specific surface area (SSA) and two metrics related to bond network, namely the Euler characteristic and the minimum cut surface. Load-induced creep of the ice matrix was observed only for sufficiently low values of initial density (<290 kg m−3 in our tests), and was shown to be associated to a significant increase of the number of bonds. Application of the load, however, did not affect the individual bond size nor the SSA, which appeared to be mainly controlled by isothermal metamorphism. The uniaxial compression did not induce any creation of anisotropy on the microstructural characteristics. Overall, our results show that, for the considered conditions, the deformation of the ice matrix mainly leads to a reduction of the pore space and an increase of the coordination number, while metamorphism mainly affects the grain and bond sizes.

Despite a number of studies reporting glacier extent changes and their response to climate change over the eastern Tien Shan, glacier mass-balance changes over multiple decades are still not well reconstructed. Here, glacier mass budgets on the Karlik Range, easternmost Tien Shan during the time spans of 1972–2000 and 2000–2015 are quantified using digital elevation models reconstructed from topographic maps, SRTM X-band radar data and ASTER images. The results exhibit significant glacier mass loss in the Karlik Range for the two time spans, with a mean mass loss of −0.19 ± 0.08 m w.e. a−1 for the 1972–2000 period and −0.45 ± 0.17 m w.e. a−1 for the 2000–2015 period. The doubling of mass loss over the latter period suggests an acceleration of glacier mass loss in the early 21st century. The accelerated mass loss is associated with regional warming whereas the decline in annual precipitation is not significant.

In addition to field observations and quantitative analyses of natural phenomena, an opportunity exists for the application of glaciological knowledge. Major problems preventing the widespread use of ice and snow as structural materials are related to processing methods, properties of ice and snow, and deterioration during the melt season. These difficulties have been considered and an experimental program carried out to determine the feasibility of developing practical methods for using ice and snow as engineering materials. Results show that the development of improved processing methods for both ice and snow, the development of ice alloys with improved properties, and the extension of the use season provide real opportunities for applied glaciology.

In 1972 the state of a hanging glacier on the Weisshorn gave cause for alarm, as part of it seemed to be accelerating and a repetition of an earlier avalanche of ice seemed possible (see Röthlisberger, previous abstract). For this reason movement surveys were undertaken. The various surveying methods applied on the Weisshorn are outlined and the accuracy of the measurements is given. By least-square analysis different types of curves have been fitted to the data for velocity versus time. The best fit obtained so-far has been with hyperbolae. The confidence of extrapolations from such curves is discussed in relation to forecasts. By evaluating repeated photographs taken by an automatic camera from a single position, using a stereo plotter, the flow pattern has been established at the surface, part of the front, and one of the lateral faces of the ice mass. Changes with time caused by the deformation of the ice mass, the formation of crevasses and the crumbling away of the ice at the edge have been observed.

Meteorological observations were made on Lewis Glacier, Mount Kenya, during the “long rains” in April 1960. General meteorological observations indicated rather similar conditions to those found in other months. Ablation occurred on each day but amounts were generally small. Rather more accumulation occurred than is expected during the dry season, but again amounts were small. The net accumulation over a to day period was only 0.38 cm. water-equivalent, although about 30 cm. new snow (about 10 cm. water-equivalent) was lying when the expedition arrived. Detailed observations of short-wave radiation, temperature, wind and humidity with estimates of long-wave radiation were used to calculate the heat balance at the surface of the upper ablation region. Agreement between calculated and measured ablation was reasonably good. Over the periods considered, radiation accounted for 89.5 per cent of ablation, turbulent exchange from the air for 8.0 per cent and evaporation for 2.5 per cent. Subsurface melting was taken into account and the formation of ice bands in terms of such melting is discussed.

Surface ponds on Antarctic fast ice were examined by measuring temperature, salinity and concentrations of chlorophyll a (Chl-a), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and nutrients (NO3 + NO2, PO4 and SiO2) in the surface pond water and under-ice water. Sea-ice cores were also collected from the bottom of a surface pond (pond-ice core) and from a site away from the pond (bare-ice core). Time-series measurements of surface pond water temperature showed that it varied with solar radiation rather than with air temperature. Comparison of water properties between surface pond water and under-ice water suggested that DIC and nutrients were consumed by biological productivity during pond formation. Depth profiles of nutrient concentrations in the pond-ice core suggested the remineralization of organic matter at the bottom of the surface pond. The Chl-a concentration was lower at the bottom of the pond-ice core than in the bare-ice core, suggesting that surface pond formation reduces ice algae abundance in sea ice because meltwater flushes algae from the porous sea ice into the under-ice water.

The study of glaciers and ice caps in remote and cloudy regions remains difficult using current remote sensing tools. Here the potential of stereo radargrammetry (SRG) with RADARSAT-2 Wide Ultra-Fine images is explored for DEM extraction, elevation changes and mass-balance calculations on Barnes Ice Cap (Nunavut, Canada). Over low-relief terrain surrounding Barnes, a vertical precision of ~7 m (1σ confidence level) is measured, as well as an average vertical bias of ~4 m. Moreover, we show that the C-band penetration depth over the ice cap is insignificant at this time of the year (i.e. late ablation season). This is likely due to a wet surface and the presence of superimposed ice that leads to a surface radar response. Comparing the SRG DEMs with other datasets, an historical glacier-wide mass balance of −0.52 ± 0.19 m w.e. a−1 is estimated for 1960–2013, whereas it decreases to −1.06 ± 0.84 m w.e. a−1 between 2005 and 2013. This clear acceleration of mass loss is in agreement with other recent studies. Given its all-weather functionality and its possible use without ground control points, the RADARSAT-2 SRG technology represents an appropriate alternative for glacier monitoring in cloudy and remote regions.

Wire strain meters and seismometers spaced longitudinally along the upper part of Variegated Glacier, Alaska, showed quasi-periodic episodes of increased velocity (mini-surges), which lasted about 1 day and recurred at intervals of a few days to 2 weeks during the early part of the melt seasons of 1979, 1980, and 1981. The zone affected by these mini-surges corresponds to the zone of highest velocity and basal stress increase over the previous decade, and the initiation of the most recent surge in 1982. Mini-surges initiate locally; as a single melt season progresses, the later mini-surges start at higher locations and show a distinct down-glacier propagation of a characteristic strain pattern and associated zone of acoustic emissions at speeds of 0.1–0.6 km h−1. During mini-surges, extensile and compressive strain-rates exceed 10 × 10−4 d−1 and 40 × 10−4 d−1, respectively; typical strain-rates between mini-surges were less than 2 × 10−4d−1 in magnitude. Seismic activity jumped by two orders of magnitude and was distinctly audible during a mini-surge. Maximum strain-rate during mini-surges decreased from year to year. The high time resolution of the strain allows short time-scale structure of velocity variations to be deduced. As a propagating mini-surge passes, the velocity anomaly at a fixed location is characterized by a rapid initial rise over a few hours to two distinct peaks separated by a few hours, followed by a slower return to normal velocity taking up to a day. The double peak in velocity may arise from a single, very sharp, transient peak in the basal slip velocity associated with the initial opening of cavities at the base in response to a sudden rise in basal water pressure (observed by Kamb and Engelhardt). This supports an important role for basal cavitation in the mini-surge mechanism.

The mass balance of Storglaciären in Kebnekajse, Swedish Lappland, has been studied in some detail sine 1946. Out of sixteen budget years, fourteen have given a deficit, one a surplus and one has been balanced. It is emphasized that more attention should be paid to the accuracy needed for significant mass balance studies. At present the density of the observation network on Storglaciären is 120 observations per km.2 for accumulation and 13 observations per km.2 for ablation measurements. The net loss during the sixteen years of observation amounts to nearly 10 per cent of the total glacier volume, and it is suggested that the principal cause of this loss is the increase in the mean summer temperature.

This paper examines the debris-rich basal ice layer from Worthington Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A., a small valley glacier overlying rigid bedrock. The debris-rich basal ice layer studied shows evidence for large-scale longitudinal compressive deformation (isoclinal folds and nappes), similar in style and magnitude features to that reported from push moraines formed in glacial sediments. The debris-rich ice largely comprised stratified solid ice (layers of alternating debris-rich and debris-poor ice) which we suggest results from the tectonic attenuation of folds produced from the deformation of the frozen debris, glacier ice and bubble-rich ice that comprise the initial basal layer of Worthington Glacier. Beneath the glacier lies a thin bed of saturated diamicton which contains evidence of limited movement. It is suggested that this is the result of the partial melt-out of the debris-rich basal ice layer which then behaved as a local (and seasonal) thin deforming layer.

It is suggested that this example, from a valley glacier flowing over rigid bedrock, provides further evidence that the processes of sediment transport, incorporation and deposition in the debris-rich basal ice are similar to and linked with those in the deforming layer.

Equilibrium-line altitudes on the White Glacier, Axel Heiberg Island, and the north-west sector of the Devon Ice Cap are shown to be closely related to mean July freezing-level heights at nearby upper-air weather stations. An inverse relationship between July freezing-level heights and mass balance on the Devon Ice Cap is also shown. Reasons for such correlations are suggested and some limitations of the relationship are outlined. Recent lowering of the freezing level in July is discussed in relation to the theoretical “steady-state” equilibrium-line altitudes in the Canadian high Arctic. It is suggested that positive mass-balance years have predominated over a large part of northern Ellesmere Island and north-central Axel Heiberg Island since 1963, and some glaciological evidence supporting this hypothesis is given.

We analysed the three-dimensional microstructure of sea ice by means of X-ray-micro computed tomography. Microscopic (brine- and air- pore sizes, numbers and connectivity) and macroscopic (salinity, density, porosity) properties of young Arctic sea ice were analysed. The analysis is based on ice cores obtained during spring 2016. Centrifuging of brine prior to CT imaging has allowed us to derive confident relationships between the open, vertically connected and total porosity of young sea ice at relatively high temperatures. We analysed the dependence of the microscopic properties on vertical position and total brine porosity. Most bulk properties (salinity, density) and pore space properties (pore sizes and their distribution) show a strong dependence on total brine porosity, but did not change significantly over the course of the field work. However, significant changes were observed for pore numbers (decreasing over time) and pore connectivity (increasing over time). CT-based salinity determinations are subject to larger than standard uncertainties (from conductivity), while the CT method yields important information about the salinity contributions from closed and open pores. We also performed a comparison of CT-based air porosity with calculations based on density from hydrostatic weighing. The consistency is encouraging and gives confidence to our CT-based results.

Results art, presented of spectral analyses of the surface and bedrock profiles along a flow line of the Wilkes ice cap and the surface along the Greenland E.G.I.G. profile. Although the bedrock appears irregular over all was velengths studied, the ice-cap surface is typically characterized by a smooth curve with small-scale surface undulations superimposed on it. The following relations of Budd (1969, 19701 are confirmed. The “damping factor" or ratio of the bedrock amplitude to the surface amplitude is a minimum for wavelengths λ about 3.3 times the ice thickness. The surface lags the bed in the direction of motion by λ/4. The magnitude of the minimum damping factor φm is typically least near the coast, and increases inland depending on the ice thickness Z, the velocity V, and the mean ice viscosity η (which is a function of stress and temperature) according to

where p is the mean ice density and g is the gravitational acceleration. Thus the determination of the damping factors provides a valuable means of estimating the ice flow parameter η.

Examination of synthetic aperture radar data collected over the southeastern Antarctic Peninsula shows that features sometimes mapped as ice shelves are more likely composed of numerous ice tongues interspersed within a matrix of fast ice and icebergs. The tongues are formed by the seaward extension of numerous small mountain glaciers that drain from the Antarctic Peninsula. Once afloat, the tongues intermingle with a matrix of fast ice and brash. Examination of 1997 RADARSAT-1 image mosaics shows that southeastern Antarctic Peninsula composite-ice shelves covered an area of about 3500 km2. Like ice tongues around the rest of Antarctica, these features are highly fragmented and likely to be susceptible to mechanical failure. One such composite shelf, located between New Bedford and Wright Inlets, was observed to decrease in area by 1200 km2 between 1997 and 2000.

Extensive damage to ice occurs during ice structure interaction by microcracking, recrystallization and melting. The objective of this work was to investigate this damage process under confined-stress conditions believed to be associated with impact zones that occur during ice–structure interaction. “Damage” refers to microstructural modification that causes deterioration of the mechanical properties. Prior experimental work has shown that a small amount of deformation causes permanent damage in ice, leading to enhanced creep rates during subsequent loading. To investigate this softening, freshwater granular ice was deformed under moderate confinement (20 MPa) at –10°C, at two rates which bracket ductile and brittle behavior (10−2 s−1 and 10−4 s−1). Samples were deformed to different levels of axial strain up to 28.8%. Thin sections were examined to assess the progressive changes in microstructure.

Both grain-boundary and intra-granular cracking began at strains corresponding to the peak stress (1–2%) for tests at both strain rates. The peak stresses were 23.4 MPa for the tests at 10−2 s−1 and 9.8 MPa for the tests at 10−4 s−1. At strains of > 1–2%, dense clusters of intra-granular cracks began to develop in the samples tested at the higher rate. At the lower rate, dynamic recrystallization was apparently the dominant deformation mechanism beyond the peak stress. The average grain-size decreased strongly during the first few per cent strain and then maintained a relatively stable value.

Heated needle probes provide the most convenient method to measure snow thermal conductivity. Recent studies have suggested that this method underestimates snow thermal conductivity; however the reasons for this discrepancy have not been elucidated. We show that it originates from the fact that, while the theory behind the method assumes that the measurements reach a logarithmic regime, this regime is not reached within the standard measurement procedure. Using the needle probe without this logarithmic regime leads to thermal conductivity underestimations of tens of percents. Moreover, we show that the poor thermal contact between the probe and the snow due to insertion damages results in a further underestimation. Thus, we encourage the use of fixed needle probes, set up before the snow season and buried under snowfalls, rather than hand-inserted probes. Finally, we propose a method to correct the measurements performed with such fixed needle probes buried in snow. This correction is based on a lookup table, derived specifically for the Hukseflux TP02 needle probe model, frequently used in snow studies. Comparison between corrected measurements and independent estimations of snow thermal conductivity obtained with numerical simulations shows an overall improvement of the needle probe values after application of the correction.

We describe the calibration and interpretation of interferograms generated from ERS-1 synthetic aperture radar Single Look Complex (SAR.SLC) images of the Rutford Ice Stream area. Ground surveys provide over 100 tie-points with which to optimise the interferometric baselines that separate nominally repeated satellite orbits. Covariant tie-point errors are dealt with by constructing an error covariance matrix for the expected values of the unwrapped interferometric phases at the tie-points. With baseline parameters that minimise the weighted residual variance, rms tie-point residuals of less than 1 cm in slant range are obtained. These are attributed to a combination of interferometric phase noise, movement survey errors and inadequate slope information. The image set used is inadequate for isolating the influences of topography and movement, so the glaciological conclusions to be drawn are limited. Nevertheless, the interferograms confirm that the whole of the upper 50 km of Carlson Inlet flows at a speed less than a tenth of that of the neighbouring Rutford Ice Stream. Also confirmed are the entry of faster-moving ice into the lower reaches of Carlson Inlet and the position of part of the Carlson Inlet grounding line. In general, the distribution of the residuals suggests no significant differences in ice movement between 1978 and 1992. An exception is the neighbourhood of the shear margin between Rutford Ice Stream and Carlson Inlet, where inconsistencies between ground surveys over the periods 1984-86 and 1994-96 and interferograms from 1994 and 1996 suggest fluctuations in velocity of up to 10 m year−1.
