Push-morainal banks at the grounding lines of tidewater termini of temperate glaciers are the source of two types of restraining forces operating at the glacier terminus. Horizontal normal forces derive from the lateral support and transport of the bank of sediment at the terminus, whereas a horizontal shear force operates along the base of a bank pushed in front of an advancing glacier. The simple model we present suggests that bank-related restraining forces are significantly larger than the restraining force derived from the hydrostatic pressure of water adjacent to the submerged terminus of a glacier. During glacier advance, restraining forces continually increase, resulting in decreasing flow rates, glacier thickening and the eventual cessation of advance. During retreat, restraining forces continually decrease, resulting in increasing flow rates, glacier thinning and the potential for unstable, rapid, sustained retreat. The normal, seasonal, oscillatory advance retreat cycle of a glacier is moderated by restraining forces associated with push moraines. Unstable retreat is likely initiated when bank-related restraining forces fall below some threshold value during the seasonal retreat cycle. Calving is not a primary cause of glacier retreat, but is more likely a short-term response to increased flow rates. Increased flow rates result in glacier thinning and an approach toward buoyancy, both of which fluctuate seasonally in accordance with bank-related restraining forces.

a method of making field measurements of the liquid water fraction of snow has been developed in which a snow sample is dissolved in methanol to produce a temperature depression. The depression is linearly related to the liquid water content of the snow sample. a single operator can perform four to five measurements per hour with a maximum absolute error of 1.0%.

While glacier fabric reflects the accumulated strain, detailed azimuthal information is required to link the microstructure to the flow, and this is not easily gathered at depth. Borehole logging provides a way to obtain a log of azimuthal orientation of tilted stratigraphic features that can be used to orient the core with respect to glacier flow. We demonstrate this using acoustic borehole logs and the ice core from a 162 m borehole in Upper Fremont Glacier, Wind River Range, Wyoming, USA. We measured the dip of tilted dust and bubble layers in the actual ice core, identified them on the borehole log, then used their strike to orient the core sections containing them. We examined the crystal orientation fabric of our samples, using electron backscatter diffraction in a scanning electron microscope. When we compared the orientation of the tilted layers in some samples with the fabric, we found that the normal to the foliation and the c-axes maxima both pointed in the direction of maximum shear stress. This illustrates the usefulness of borehole logs for orienting ice cores after removal from the borehole, and for developing a better understanding of fabric development.

Valtellina, located in the Italian Alps of Lombardy, is extensively glaciated. Since 1925, terminal variations of the glaciers have been recorded. By analysing a significant sample of valley glaciers, we have recognized a rapid retreat of the termini which occurred between 1925 and the early 1970s. A period of advance followed, which stopped in the second half of the 1980s. The mean summer-temperature fluctuations at the meteorological station of Sondrio at the centre of Valtellina, show that the period 1925–52 was very warm, and then the temperatures dropped. The most intense winter precipitation occurred in the period 1925–37. The behaviour of these glaciers is similar to that of other Alpine glaciers, although time of response may be different.

Radiometers, suspended at a height of 15 m between two towers anchored to the bottom of the ice cover, have been used to measure the average or integrated albedo of the surface. The work was carried out in May 1967 at Tanquary Fiord, Ellesmere Island (lat. 81° 25′ N., long. 76° 50′ W.) during the period when the surface of the ice cover was undergoing rapid change. The albedo was observed to have a value of almost 1·0, for a fresh snow cover, and about 0·8 for a weathered snow cover. It decreased to 0·6 as the wind partially cleared the surface of snow and gradually to 0·5 with further deterioration of the snow. The onset of melting, produced when the daily mean temperature exceeded 0°C, rapidly lowered the albedo to a value of about 0·3.

The deep-drilling projects at the Summit ice divide will require thermal models to help interpret the paleoclimatic signals in their cores. An analytic, steady-state model predicts basal temperatures within 1 °C of the ice melting-point and basal ice no older than 100–400 kyear should melting occur. A two-dimensional, time-dependent temperature model includes the effects of realistic two-dimensional ice flow and the temperature and mass-balance patterns of the last two glacial cycles. The model relaxes some assumptions made in one-dimensional studies and produces lower basal temperatures. The basal temperatures are most sensitive to the value of the geothermal heat flux and the mass-balance pattern. If the flux is less than 56 mW m−2, the bed has likely been frozen throughout the last glacial cycle. The decoupling of the energy and mass-conservation equations is a significant source of error which can be eliminated only by a fully coupled ice-flow/ heat-flow model.

The hardness observations taken in the Canadian Snow Survey are analysed and found to depend on snow density, temperature, and crystal size. This strength property of the snow is found to be highly variable and the variability is attributed to unstable bonding between individual snow grains.

A new short-pulse digital profiling radar system that operates at lower frequencies than most ice radars used in polar regions to date has been designed and built by the U.S. Geological Survey. The transmitter is an avalanche transistor pulser which drives a resistively loaded dipole transmitting antenna. A similar, but separate antenna is connected to the receiver. The receiver has adjustable sensitivity time control (STC) of as much as 60 dB to compensate for attenuation and geometric spreading factors. A fiber-optic cable is used to transmit both control signals and data. The data-acquisition and display system incorporates very high-speed digitizing and signal averaging, real-time profile display, and data storage on standard computer nine-track magnetic tape.

The system was successfully used on Ice Stream B in West Antarctica at centre frequencies of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12.5 MHz. Bottom-return signal-to-noise ratios of more than 40 dB were obtained at 2 MHz through 800 m of ice. Convoluted internal surfaces not related to present bottom topography were resolved within the ice streams and anomalous strong reflections or “bright spots” were identified near the base of the ice. At present, there is no satisfactory glaciological explanation for either of these observations.

The Gara Glacier, a north-facing valley glacier situated in the western Himalaya, was selected to be part of the study undertaken by India in connection with the International Hydrological Decade. This paper deals with the procedure adopted and the results obtained for mass-balance assessment over a period of one year between September 1974 and September 1975. The glacier has recorded a positive net balance of the order of 2.48 X 106 m3 in terms of water equivalent.

Estimates of ice shelf mass loss are typically based on surface height measurements, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium and estimated firn thickness. Recent investigations, however, challenge the assumption that ice shelves are freely floating, particularly in proximity to narrow structures such as basal channels and shear margins. We compare contemporaneous measurements of Antarctic ice shelf thickness, from ice-penetrating radar, to freeboard height, from laser altimetry, acquired during multiple airborne surveys. On average, the hydrostatic thickness differs from observed thickness by at least ~17 ± 98 m, but this difference varies well beyond the propagated error within and among ice shelves, and depends on the corrections applied. We find that uncertainty in firn thickness can account for most, but not all, of the imbalance. Overall, errors in hydrostatic thickness do not significantly impact estimated basal melt rates. Our results indicate that localized approaches to estimating ice shelf thickness and rates of change are not applicable at large scales, and vice versa, and point to the need for more abundant and accurate firn and ice thickness measurements to improve estimates and predictions of ice shelf mass loss.

This work proposes a holistic quantitative snow avalanche risk assessment that evaluates, at reasonable computational costs and for various types of buildings, the impact of forest cover changes on the probability distribution of runout distances, impact pressures and subsequent risk estimates. A typical case study of the French Alps shows that, from a completely deforested to a completely forested path, avalanche risk for a building located downslope decreases by 53–99%, depending on how forest cover is accounted for in avalanche statistical–dynamical modeling. Local forest cover data inferred from old maps and photographs further demonstrates that a 20–60% risk reduction actually occurred between 1825 and 2017 at the site because of the afforestation dynamics, with significant modulations according to the considered building technology. These results (1) assert the protective role of forests against snow avalanches, (2) highlight the potential of combining nature-based solutions with traditional structural measures to reduce risk to acceptable levels at reasonable costs, (3) suggest a significant decrease in risk to settlements in areas that encountered similar forest cover changes and (4) open the door to the quantification of long-term avalanche risk changes as a function of changes of all its hazard, vulnerability and exposure drivers in various mountain context.

By means of modern geodetic observation techniques the ice movement along an east-west and a north-south profile across the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, was measured during the two Antarctic summers, 1962–63 and 1965–66. 103 markers were placed on the 910 km long traverse. Distances were measured by tellurometer, and traverse angles by a precision theodolite between all consecutive markers, normally 8 to 9 km apart. For this type of observation method, six men distributed into three groups of two men each were necessary.

The main part of the paper deals with data processing and with the computation of the ice movement. As the ice moves, the geometrical configuration of the traverse changes during the epoch of observation. For this “reduction to epoch” problem two methods are described in detail: (1) time reduction of observations, and (2) time reduction of positions. Between the two field journeys, only linear ice movement can be assumed. It is possible, however, to determine acceleration and curvature of the ice flow at all traverse points where the traverse angles differ considerably from 180°.

The result of all computations is the field of velocity vectors along the traverse. Obvious characteristics are the rapid increase of velocity between the McMurdo Ice Shelf and Ross Ice Shelf, the uniform and nearly parallel movement in the middle of the ice shelf (maximum velocity 935 m year−1), the decrease of velocity along the north-south profile, and the systematic increase of divergence of the flow lines towards the ice margins. Careful study of the velocity vector field shows some deviations from an entirely uniform distribution.

Reconnaissance energy-balance studies were made for the first time at two sites in North Greenland to compare with conditions in West Greenland. The field experiments were planned to save weight because it is expensive to operate in North Greenland. The larger energy components (incoming radiation and ablation) were measured for 55 days altogether, and the smaller components were evaluated by indirect methods, e.g. turbulent fluxes are calculated from air temperature, humidity and wind speed, to save the weight of instruments. The energy-balance model is “tuned" by choosing surface roughness and albedo to reduce the mean error between measured ablation and modelled daily melting. The error standard deviation for ablation is only ± 5 kg m −2 d−1’, which is much lower than found in West Greenland, due to better instruments and modelling in the present study. Net radiation is the main energy source for melting in North Greenland but ablation is relatively low because sublimation and conductive-heat fluxes use energy that would otherwise be available for melting. There is a strong diurnal variation in ablation, mainly forced by variations in shortwave radiation and reinforced by nocturnal cooling of the ice surface by outgoing longwave radiation and sublimation. The model frequently predicts a frozen glacier surface at night even when air temperatures are positive.

Svalbard has experienced a dramatic increase in air temperature and glacier retreat since the end of the Little Ice Age. In many cases, this retreat has resulted in glaciers transitioning from being marine-terminating to land-terminating. Nordenskiöldbreen is an excellent contemporary example of this transition. A set of historical observations of glacier front positions was used to assess Nordenskiöldbreen's retreat rate and we found that the southern portion of the glacier front retreated by ~3500 m, since records began in 1896. The general retreat rate corresponds well with the air temperature trend during most of the 20th century. However, the average retreat rate has slowed since the 1990s despite increasing air temperatures. We show that this discrepancy between air temperature and retreat rate marks the transition from marine-terminating towards a land-terminating glacier, as the glacier's bedrock topography started to play an essential role in the glacier margin geometry, ice flow and retreat dynamics.

During a field survey in High Semyen, northern Ethiopia, two moraine complexes were mapped, the lower one extending down to around 3 750 m. Glacial morphology is best developed in the north-western and western quadrants. Moraines are deeply weathered and carry abundant vegetation. For Mounts Badda, Cilalo, Cacca and Enguolo in southern Ethiopia, possible moraines are inferred from air photographs; there are indications for more pronounced glaciation in the western quadrant, and moraines seem to extend further down than in High Semyen. Highest moraines at Mount Elgon in northern Kenya/ Uganda were found to below 3 600 m. Major moraine complexes in the mountains of Ethiopia and East Africa suggest some spatial correlation in elevation and appearance, but absolute dates are absent.

We present spatially distributed seasonal and annual surface mass balances of Wolverine Glacier, Alaska, from 2016 to 2020. Our approach accounts for the effects of ice emergence and firn compaction on surface elevation changes to resolve the spatial patterns in mass balance at 10 m scale. We present and compare three methods for estimating emergence velocities. Firn compaction was constrained by optimizing a firn model to fit three firn cores. Distributed mass balances showed good agreement with mass-balance stakes (RMSE = 0.67 m w.e., r = 0.99, n = 41) and ground-penetrating radar surveys (RMSE = 0.36 m w.e., r = 0.85, n = 9024). Fundamental differences in the distributions of seasonal balances highlight the importance of disparate physical processes, with anomalously high ablation rates observed in icefalls. Winter balances were found to be positively skewed when controlling for elevation, while summer and annual balances were negatively skewed. We show that only a small percent of the glacier surface represents ideal locations for mass-balance stake placement. Importantly, no suitable areas are found near the terminus or in elevation bands dominated by icefalls. These findings offer explanations for the often-needed geodetic calibrations of glaciological time series.

The continuity relationship that is often used in the study of ice sheets and ice shelves is developed by integrating the equation of continuity through the ice thickness. This equation is then integrated again with respect to horizontal distance from an ice divide, showing that the difference between the true ice velocity and the balance velocity, which is defined, is a measure of the time chance of the mass of a column through the ice thickness.

The relationship is applied using data from along the “Byrd” station strain network, Antarctica. This region is found to be thinning slowly (0.03 m a−1 of ice of mean density) and uniformly, but it is still close to steady-state. The calculations would show a larger thinning rate if bottom sliding contributed more to the ice movement and integral shear contributed less, but the “Byrd” station bore-hole tilting results of Garfield and Ueda (1975, 1976), together with surface velocity measurements at “Byrd” station, indicate that most of the ice flow is by deformation within the ice mass. This large amount of internal deformation is more than that predicted by most “flow laws”, probably because of the strongly oriented ice-crystal fabric in the ice sheet. The cause of ice thinning is probably decreased surface mass balance beginning before A.D. 1550.

The consistent relationship between measured velocity and balance velocity indicates that the ice flow is simple and that flow lines are in the same direction at depth as at the surface when considered smoothed over a distance of 10 km. Because the ice sheet is at present thinning, the balance velocity, calculated only from flow line and surface mass-balance data, and the somewhat mistaken assumption of steady-state is 15% less than the true ice velocity. This rather small difference confirms the use of balance-velocity estimates where velocity measurements are not available.
