A discrepancy exists between the predictions of analytical solutions of approximate Navier–Stokes equations and numerical finite-difference solutions of the full Navier–Stokes equations regarding the development of laminar flow at the entrance to cylindrical pipes for Newtonian fluids. Starting from a uniform velocity profile at the entrance to the pipe, analytical solutions of approximate Navier–Stokes equations predict the velocity profile to have a maximum at the centre of the pipe at all times. In contrast, numerical finite-difference solutions of the full Navier–Stokes equations have suggested that the location of the velocity maximum moves from the wall towards the centre of the pipe at a short distance from the entrance, after which it remains at the centre of the pipe. This study presents the first experimental evidence of the moving velocity maximum from the wall towards the centre of the pipe. The initial uniform velocity profile was achieved by flowing the fluid through a monolith composed of narrow parallel channels and the flow development was investigated using magnetic resonance velocimetry. The experimentally observed variation of the position and size of the velocity maximum with the Reynolds number and the distance from the entrance to the pipe is shown to be in good agreement with the predictions of numerical finite-difference solutions of the full Navier–Stokes equations.

In nature and in many industrial applications, the boundary of a channel flow is made of solid particles which form a porous wall, so that there is a mutual influence between the free flow and the subsurface flow developing inside the pores. While the influence of the porous wall on the free flow has been well studied, less well characterized is the subsurface flow, due to the practical difficulties in gathering information in the small spaces given by the pores. It is also not clear whether the subsurface flow can host turbulent events able to contribute significantly to the build-up of forces on the particles, potentially leading to their dislodgement. Through large eddy simulations, we investigate the interface between a free flow and a bed composed of spherical particles in a cubic arrangement. The communication between surface and subsurface flow is in this case enhanced, with relatively strong turbulent events happening also inside the pores. After comparing the simulation results with a previous experimental work from a similar setting, the forces experienced by the boundary particles are analysed. While it remains true that the lift forces are largely dependent on the structure of the free flow, turbulence inside the pores can also give a significant contribution. Pressure inside the pores is weakly correlated to the pressure in the free flow, and strong peaks above and below a particle can happen independently. Ignoring the porous layer below the particle from the computations leads then in this case to an underestimation of the lift forces.

The stability of fibre spinning flow of a polymeric fluid is analysed in the presence of thermal effects. The spinline is modelled as a one-dimensional slender-body filament of the entangled polymer solution. The previous study (Gupta & Chokshi, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 776, 2015, pp. 268–289) analysed linear and nonlinear stability behaviour of an isothermal extensional flow in the air gap during the fibre spinning process. The present study extends the analysis to take in to account the non-isothermal spinning flow in which the spinline loses heat by convection to the surrounding air as well as by solvent evaporation. The nonlinear rheology of the polymer solution is described using the eXtended Pom-Pom (XPP) model. The non-isothermal effects influence the rheology of the fluid through viscosity, which is taken to be temperature and concentration dependent. The linear stability analysis is carried out to obtain the draw ratio for the onset of instability, known as the draw resonance, and a stability diagram is constructed in the $DR_{c}{-}De$ plane. $DR_{c}$ is the critical draw ratio, and $De$ is the flow Deborah number. The enhancement in viscosity driven by spinline cooling leads to postponement in the onset of draw resonance, indicating the stabilising role of non-isothermal effects. Weakly nonlinear stability analysis is also performed to reveal the role of nonlinearities in the finite amplitude manifold in the vicinity of the flow transition point. For low to moderate Deborah numbers, the bifurcation is supercritical, and the flow attains an oscillatory state with an equilibrium amplitude post-transition when $DR>DR_{c}$. The equilibrium amplitude of the resonating state is found to be smaller when non-isothermal effects are incorporated in comparison to the isothermal spinning flow. For very fast flows in the regime of high Deborah numbers, the finite amplitude manifold crosses over to a subcritical state. In this limit, the nonlinearities render the flow unstable even in the linearly stable regime of $DR<DR_{c}$.

The inertialess motion of lipid-bilayer vesicles flowing through a circular tube is investigated via direct numerical simulation and lubrication theory. A fully three-dimensional boundary integral equation method, previously used to study unbounded and wall-bounded Stokes flows around freely suspended vesicles, is extended to study the hindered mobility of vesicles through conduits of arbitrary cross-section. This study focuses on the motion of a periodic train of vesicles positioned concentrically inside a circular tube, with particular attention given to the effects of tube confinement, vesicle deformation and membrane bending elasticity. When the tube diameter is comparable to the transverse dimension of the vesicle, axisymmetric lubrication theory provides an approximate solution to the full Stokes-flow problem. By combining the present numerical results with a previously reported asymptotic theory (Barakat & Shaqfeh, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 835, 2018, pp. 721–761), useful correlations are developed for the vesicle velocity $U$ and extra pressure drop $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}p^{+}$. When bending elasticity is relatively weak, these correlations are solely functions of the geometry of the system (independent of the imposed flow rate). The prediction of Barakat & Shaqfeh (2018) supplies the correct limiting behaviour of $U$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}p^{+}$ near maximal confinement, whereas the present study extends this result to all regimes of confinement. Vesicle–vesicle interactions, shape transitions induced by symmetry breaking, and unsteadiness introduce quantitative changes to $U$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}p^{+}$. By contrast, membrane bending elasticity can qualitatively affect the hydrodynamics at sufficiently low flow rates. The dependence of $U$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}p^{+}$ on the membrane bending stiffness (relative to a characteristic viscous stress scale) is found to be rather complex. In particular, the competition between viscous forces and bending forces can hinder or enhance the vesicle’s mobility, depending on the geometry and flow conditions.

Upon burst, surface bubbles transfer biological and chemical material from water bodies to the air we breathe via the production of droplets. An understanding of what shapes the size and payload of such droplets starts by understanding the fundamental physics of bubble birth, drainage and burst. Our combined experimental and theoretical investigation focuses on film-drop-producing surface bubbles. Controlling fluid properties such as temperature, salinity and volatility, coupled with changes of ambient air saturation, we elucidate the ageing and lifetime of bubbles. We derive and validate a generalized bubble cap drainage model accounting for both curvature-pressure-induced drainage and Marangoni flows induced by the coupling between the bubble and its surrounding air. We show that this deterministic drainage is coupled with stochastic local perturbations, both intrinsic and extrinsic, from impacts by mist droplets to microbubbles. We derive the conditions for such perturbations to be lethal to the cap film, involving the competition of mixing and drainage time scales on the bubble, the film thickness, the size of the perturbation and the local Marangoni stresses introduced. We explain how the mixing dynamics on the cap ensures that bursts mostly occur at the foot of bubbles rather than on their cap. Our study sheds light on the coupling between the deterministic cap thinning and the stochastic events leading to bubble death. We conclude that ubiquitous water contaminants enable the birth of a bubble, sustain it through its ageing, but ultimately also kill it.

We derive and investigate exact expressions for third-order structure functions in stationary isotropic two-dimensional turbulence, assuming a statistical balance between random forcing and dissipation both at small and large scales. Our results extend previously derived asymptotic expressions in the enstrophy and energy inertial ranges by providing uniformly valid expressions that apply across the entire non-dissipative range, which, importantly, includes the forcing scales. In the special case of white noise in time forcing this leads to explicit predictions for the third-order structure functions, which are successfully tested against previously published high-resolution numerical simulations. We also consider spectral energy transfer rates and suggest and test a simple robust diagnostic formula that is useful when forcing is applied at more than one scale.

Direct numerical simulations are performed for the uniform flow around an inclined circular disk. The diameter–thickness aspect ratio ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}=D/t_{d}$) of the disk is 50 and the inclination angle ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$) is considered over the range of $0^{\circ }\leqslant \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\leqslant 80^{\circ }$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=0^{\circ }$ refers to the condition where the flow is normal to the disk. The Reynolds number ($\mathit{Re}$), based on the short axis of projection in the streamwise direction, is defined as $\mathit{Re}=U_{\infty }D\cos \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$, where $U_{\infty }$ is the velocity of the flow and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ is the kinematic viscosity. $\mathit{Re}$ is investigated over the range of 50 ${\leqslant}\mathit{Re}\leqslant$ 300. In the considered $\mathit{Re}$–$\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ parametric space, five states are observed and denoted as: (I) steady state (SS); (II) periodic state (PS); (III) periodic state with a low frequency modulation (PSL); (IV) quasi-periodic state (QP) and (V) chaotic state (CS). Both $\mathit{Re}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ affect the bifurcation mechanism. The bifurcating sequence occurring at $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=0^{\circ }$ is generally observed over the whole $\mathit{Re}$–$\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ space, although it is advanced at small $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ and delayed at large $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$. The advancement of thresholds for different states is due to the effects introduced by inclination, which tend to select the plane of symmetry for the wake in order to regulate the wake and intensify some flow features. Nevertheless, the bifurcations are still in the dominant position when leading a state without stable symmetry, i.e. the planar symmetry could not be recovered by small $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$. These phenomena are further discussed with respect to the vortex shedding patterns behind the disk. Furthermore, for any fixed disk, the wake behaviour is only associated with that found in the steady vertical state of a freely falling disk. The fully coupled fluid–body system is fundamentally different from the fixed cases.

Microorganisms must approach other suspended organisms or particles in order to interact with them during a host of life processes including feeding and mating. Microorganisms live at low Reynolds number where viscosity dominates and strongly affects the hydrodynamics of swimmer and nearby cells and objects. Viscous hydrodynamics makes it difficult for two surfaces to approach closely at low Reynolds numbers. Nonetheless, it is observed that microorganisms in fluid are still able to approach closely enough to interact with each other or suspended particles. Here, we study how the physical constraints provided by viscous hydrodynamics affects the feasibility of direct approach of flagellated and ciliated microorganisms to targets of different sizes. We find that it is feasible for singly flagellated swimmers to approach targets that are the same size or bigger. On the other hand, for squirmers, the feasibility of approach depends on near-field flows that can be controlled by the details of their swimming strokes.

High Reynolds number is thought to be a fundamental condition essential for the occurrence of log scaling in turbulent boundary layers. However, while log variation of mean velocity is seen to occur at moderate Reynolds numbers in the traditional boundary layer literature, log variations of higher-order moments are evident only at much higher Reynolds numbers, as reported in recent experiments. This observation suggests that, underlying the occurrence of log scaling in turbulent boundary layers, there exists a more fundamental condition (apart from the largeness of Reynolds number) – the requirement of self-similar evolution of a mean-flow quantity of interest along a mean-flow streamline, i.e. the mean advection of the scaled mean quantity of interest is required to be zero. Experimental data from the literature provide strong support for this proposal.

A fundamental understanding of the filament thinning of viscoelastic fluids is important in practical applications such as spraying and printing of complex materials. Here, we present direct numerical simulations of the two-phase axisymmetric momentum equations using the volume-of-fluid technique for interface tracking and the log-conformation transformation to solve the viscoelastic constitutive equation. The numerical results for the filament thinning are in excellent agreement with the theoretical description developed with a slender body approximation. We show that the off-diagonal stress component of the polymeric stress tensor is important and should not be neglected when investigating the later stages of filament thinning. This demonstrates that such numerical methods can be used to study details not captured by the one-dimensional slender body approximation, and pave the way for numerical studies of viscoelastic fluid flows.

In turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard (RB) convection, a transition to the so-called ultimate regime, in which the boundary layers (BL) are of turbulent type, has been postulated. Indeed, at very large Rayleigh number $Ra\approx 10^{13}{-}10^{14}$ a transition in the scaling of the global Nusselt number $Nu$ (the dimensionless heat transfer) and the Reynolds number with $Ra$ has been observed in experiments and very recently in direct numerical simulations (DNS) of two-dimensional (2D) RB convection. In this paper, we analyse the local scaling properties of the lateral temperature structure functions in the BLs of this simulation of 2D RB convection, employing extended self-similarity (ESS) (i.e., plotting the structure functions against each other, rather than only against the scale) in the spirit of the attached-eddy hypothesis, as we have recently introduced for velocity structure functions in wall turbulence (Krug et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 830, 2017, pp. 797–819). We find no ESS scaling at $Ra$ below the transition and in the near-wall region. However, beyond the transition and for large enough wall distance $z^{+}>100$, we find clear ESS behaviour, as expected for a scalar in a turbulent boundary layer. In striking correspondence to the $Nu$ scaling, the ESS scaling region is negligible at $Ra=10^{11}$ and well developed at $Ra=10^{14}$, thus providing strong evidence that the observed transition in the global Nusselt number at $Ra\approx 10^{13}$ indeed is the transition from a laminar type BL to a turbulent type BL. Our results further show that the relative slopes for scalar structure functions in the ESS scaling regime are the same as for their velocity counterparts, extending their previously established universality. The findings are confirmed by comparing to scalar structure functions in three-dimensional turbulent channel flow.

The divergence-free time-independent velocity field has been determined so as to maximise heat transfer between two parallel plates with a constant temperature difference under the constraint of fixed total enstrophy. The present variational problem is the same as that first formulated by Hassanzadeh et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 751, 2014, pp. 627–662); however, the search range for optimal states has been extended to a three-dimensional velocity field. A scaling of the Nusselt number $Nu$ with the Péclet number $Pe$ (i.e., the square root of the non-dimensionalised enstrophy with thermal diffusion time scale), $Nu\sim Pe^{2/3}$, has been found in the three-dimensional optimal states, corresponding to the asymptotic scaling with the Rayleigh number $Ra$, $Nu\sim Ra^{1/2}$, expected to appear in an ultimate state, and thus to the Taylor energy dissipation law in high-Reynolds-number turbulence. At $Pe\sim 10^{0}$, a two-dimensional array of large-scale convection rolls provides maximal heat transfer. A three-dimensional optimal solution emerges from bifurcation on the two-dimensional solution branch at $Pe\sim 10^{1}$, and the three-dimensional solution branch has been tracked up to $Pe\sim 10^{4}$ (corresponding to $Ra\approx 2.7\times 10^{6}$). At $Pe\gtrsim 10^{3}$, the optimised velocity fields consist of convection cells with hierarchical self-similar vortical structures, and the temperature fields exhibit a logarithmic-like mean profile near the walls.

This study explores the formation of circular thin-film hydraulic jumps caused by the normal impact of a jet on an infinite planar surface. For more than a century, it has been believed that all hydraulic jumps are created due to gravity. However, we show that these thin-film hydraulic jumps result from energy loss due to surface tension and viscous forces alone. We show that, at the jump, surface tension and viscous forces balance the momentum in the liquid film and gravity plays no significant role. Experiments show no dependence on the orientation of the surface and a scaling relation balancing viscous forces and surface tension collapses the experimental data. A theoretical analysis shows that the downstream transport of surface energy is the previously neglected critical ingredient in these flows, and that capillary waves play the role of gravity waves in a traditional jump in demarcating the transition from the supercritical to subcritical flow associated with these jumps.

The linear stability of a stably stratified fluid-filled cavity subject to vertical oscillations is determined via Floquet analysis. Retaining the viscous and diffusion terms in the Navier–Stokes–Boussinesq equations, with no-slip velocity boundary conditions, no-flux temperature conditions on the sidewalls and constant temperatures on the top and bottom walls, we find that the instabilities are primarily subharmonic (as is typical in many parametrically forced systems), except for in a few low-forcing-frequency ranges where the instabilities are synchronous. When the viscosity is small, the Floquet modes resemble the inviscid eigenmodes of the unforced problem, except in boundary layers. We establish scaling laws quantifying how viscosity regularizes the degeneracy associated with the inviscid idealization, and how it scales the thickness and intensity of the boundary layers. The product of boundary layer thickness and intensity remains constant with decreasing viscosity, leading to a delta distribution of vorticity on the walls in the limit of zero viscosity. This is in contrast to the zero wall vorticity in the inviscid case.
