The local granular rheology is investigated numerically in turbulent bedload transport. Considering spherical particles, steady uniform configurations are simulated using a coupled fluid–discrete-element model. The stress tensor is computed as a function of the depth for a series of simulations varying the Shields number, the specific density and the particle diameter. The results are analysed in the framework of the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}(I)$ rheology and exhibit a collapse of both the shear to normal stress ratio and the solid volume fraction over a wide range of inertial numbers. Contrary to expectations, the effect of the interstitial fluid on the granular rheology is shown to be negligible, supporting recent work suggesting the absence of a clear transition between the free-fall and turbulent regimes. In addition, data collapse is observed up to unexpectedly high inertial numbers $I\sim 2$, challenging the existing conceptions and parametrisation of the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}(I)$ rheology. Focusing upon bedload transport modelling, the results are pragmatically analysed in the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}(I)$ framework in order to propose a granular rheology for bedload transport. The proposed rheology is tested using a 1D volume-averaged two-phase continuous model, and is shown to accurately reproduce the dense granular flow profiles and the sediment transport rate over a wide range of Shields numbers. The present contribution represents a step in the upscaling process from particle-scale simulations towards large-scale applications involving complex flow geometry.

The influence of turbulence on the flow around a wall-mounted cube immersed in a turbulent boundary layer is investigated experimentally with particle image velocimetry and hot-wire anemometry. Free-stream turbulence is used to generate turbulent boundary layer profiles where the normalised shear at the cube height is fixed, but the turbulence intensity at the cube height is adjustable. The free-stream turbulence is generated with an active grid and the turbulent boundary layer is formed on an artificial floor in a wind tunnel. The boundary layer development Reynolds number ($Re_{x}$) and the ratio of the cube height ($h$) to the boundary layer thickness ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$) are held constant at $Re_{x}=1.8\times 10^{6}$ and $h/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}=0.47$. It is demonstrated that the stagnation point on the upstream side of the cube and the reattachment length in the wake of the cube are independent of the incoming profile for the conditions investigated here. In contrast, the wake length monotonically decreases for increasing turbulence intensity but fixed normalised shear – both quantities measured at the cube height. The wake shortening is a result of heightened turbulence levels promoting wake recovery from high local velocities and the reduction in strength of a dominant shedding frequency.

We investigate the hovering dynamics of rigid bodies with up-down asymmetry placed in oscillating background flows. Recent experiments on inanimate pyramid-shaped objects in oscillating flows with zero mean component demonstrate that the resulting aerodynamic forces are sufficient to keep the object aloft. The mechanisms responsible for this lift production are fundamentally unsteady and depend on the shed vorticity. Here, we consider a model system of a two-dimensional flyer and compute the unsteady, two-way coupling between the flyer and the surrounding fluid in the context of the vortex sheet model. We examine in detail the flow properties (frequency and speed) required for hovering and their dependence on the flyer’s characteristics (mass and geometry). We find that, at low oscillation frequencies, a flyer of a fixed mass and shape requires a constant amount of flow acceleration to hover, irrespective of the frequency and speed of the oscillating flow. Meanwhile, at high oscillation frequencies, the flow speed required to hover is constant. In either case, the aerodynamic requirements to hover (flow acceleration or flow speed) are an intrinsic property of the flyer itself. This physical insight could potentially have significant implications on the design of unmanned air vehicles as well as on understanding active hovering of live organisms that can manipulate their flapping motion to favour a larger oscillation amplitude or frequency.

We present an exhaustive experimental and theoretical study of the shapes of simple and compound jets formed when one (simple) or two (compound) immiscible liquids are injected into another liquid. The viscosity of the co-flowing external liquid is chosen to vary the characteristic Reynolds number of the outer stream, $Re_{o}$, over a wide range of values. Our slender-body theory in Gordillo et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 738, 2014, pp. 335–357) is extended to predict the shapes of simple jets when $Re_{o}$ is such that $Re_{o}\gg 1$ and also to predict the shapes of compound jets in the case of $Re_{o}\lesssim O(1)$. The validity of our theoretical results, applicable to describe the dynamics of simple or compound jets within an outer carrier fluid in a wide variety of practical situations, is tested using a set-up where the liquids flow from a pressurized chamber towards an extraction tube, finding a very good agreement between the predicted and the observed shapes. Moreover, when $Re_{o}\lesssim O(1)$, and thanks to the fact that the liquid jets produced using our method are highly stretched in the downstream direction, we find that the values of the critical capillary number above which a steady stretched jet is produced, with the capillary number defined here using the outer stream velocity and viscosity, is well below the corresponding critical values characterizing other similar procedures, like flow focusing. This experimental result, which is supported by a spatio-temporal stability analysis in which the axial gradients of the unperturbed solution are retained in the dispersion relation, imply a substantial saving of energy and of the volume of outer liquid necessary to generate a steady capillary jet from which drops are regularly produced. Additionally, making use of continuity arguments and of the fact that drops are formed as a consequence of the growth of a capillary instability, we provide closed expressions for the drop diameters and their production frequencies when the capillary number is above the critical one, in very good agreement with experiments. The simple or double microemulsions generated by the capillary disintegration of the type of simple or compound highly stretched steady jets described here might find applications in biotechnology, pharmacy, cosmetics or materials science.

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are used to examine the pressure fluctuations generated by a spatially developed Mach 5.86 turbulent boundary layer. The unsteady pressure field is analysed at multiple wall-normal locations, including those at the wall, within the boundary layer (including inner layer, the log layer, and the outer layer), and in the free stream. The statistical and structural variations of pressure fluctuations as a function of wall-normal distance are highlighted. Computational predictions for mean-velocity profiles and surface pressure spectrum are in good agreement with experimental measurements, providing a first ever comparison of this type at hypersonic Mach numbers. The simulation shows that the dominant frequency of boundary-layer-induced pressure fluctuations shifts to lower frequencies as the location of interest moves away from the wall. The pressure wave propagates with a speed nearly equal to the local mean velocity within the boundary layer (except in the immediate vicinity of the wall) while the propagation speed deviates from Taylor’s hypothesis in the free stream. Compared with the surface pressure fluctuations, which are primarily vortical, the acoustic pressure fluctuations in the free stream exhibit a significantly lower dominant frequency, a greater spatial extent, and a smaller bulk propagation speed. The free-stream pressure structures are found to have similar Lagrangian time and spatial scales as the acoustic sources near the wall. As the Mach number increases, the free-stream acoustic fluctuations exhibit increased radiation intensity, enhanced energy content at high frequencies, shallower orientation of wave fronts with respect to the flow direction, and larger propagation velocity.

Resonant sloshing in an upright annular tank is studied by using a new nonlinear modal theory, which is complete within the framework of the Narimanov–Moiseev asymptotics. The applicability is justified for a fairly deep liquid (the liquid-depth-to-outer-tank-radius ratio $1.5\lesssim h=\bar{h}/\bar{r}_{2}$) and away from the non-dimensional inner radii $r_{1}=\bar{r}_{1}/\bar{r}_{2}=0.08546$, 0.17618, 0.27826, 0.31323, 0.31855, 0.43444, 0.46015, 0.48434, 0.68655, 0.70118. The theory is used to describe steady-state (stable and unstable) resonant waves due to a harmonic excitation with the forcing frequency close to the lowest natural sloshing frequency. We show that the surge-sway-pitch-roll excitation is always of either longitudinal or elliptic type. Existing experimental results on the horizontally excited steady-state wave regimes in an upright circular tank ($r_{1}=0$) are utilised for validation. Inserting an inner pole with the radii $r_{1}\approx 0.25$ and 0.35 ($1.5\lesssim h$) causes that no stable swirling and/or irregular waves exist. The response curves for an elliptic-type excitation are examined versus the minor-axis forcing-amplitude component. Stable swirling is then expected being co- and counter-directed to the angular forcing direction. Passage to the rotary (circular) excitation keeps the co-directed swirling stable for all resonant forcing frequencies but the stable counter-directed swirling disappears.

Turbulent heat transfer across a sheared wind-driven gas–liquid interface is investigated by means of a direct numerical simulation of gas–liquid two-phase turbulent flows under non-breaking wave conditions. The wind-driven wavy gas–liquid interface is captured using the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian method with boundary-fitted coordinates on moving grids, and the temperature fields on both the gas and liquid sides, and the humidity field on the gas side are solved. The results show that although the distributions of the total, latent, sensible and radiative heat fluxes at the gas–liquid interface exhibit streak features such that low-heat-flux regions correspond to both low-streamwise-velocity regions on the gas side and high-streamwise-velocity regions on the liquid side, the similarity between the heat-flux streak and velocity streak on the gas side is more significant than that on the liquid side. This means that, under the condition of a fully developed wind-driven turbulent field on both the gas and liquid sides, the heat transfer across the sheared wind-driven gas–liquid interface is strongly affected by the turbulent eddies on the gas side, rather than by the turbulent eddies and Langmuir circulations on the liquid side. This trend is quite different from that of the mass transfer (i.e. $\text{CO}_{2}$ gas). This is because the resistance to heat transfer is normally lower than the resistance to mass transfer on the liquid side, and therefore the heat transfer is controlled by the turbulent eddies on the gas side. It is also verified that the predicted total heat, latent heat, sensible heat and enthalpy transfer coefficients agree well with previously measured values in both laboratory and field experiments. To estimate the heat transfer coefficients on both the gas and liquid sides, the surface divergence could be a useful parameter, even when Langmuir circulations exist.

We present an experimental study of the time evolution of an isolated anticyclonic pancake vortex in a laboratory rotating stratified flow. Motivations come from the variety of compact anticyclones observed to form and persist for a strikingly long lifetime in geophysical and astrophysical settings combining rotation and stratification. We generate anticyclones by injecting a small amount of isodense fluid at the centre of a rotating tank filled with salty water linearly stratified in density. The velocity field is measured by particle image velocimetry in the vortex equatorial plane. Our two control parameters are the Coriolis parameter $f$ and the Brunt–Väisälä frequency $N$. We observe that anticyclones always slowly decay by viscous diffusion, spreading mainly in the horizontal direction irrespective of the initial aspect ratio. This behaviour is correctly explained by a linear analytical model in the limit of small Rossby and Ekman numbers, where density and velocity equations reduce to a single equation for the pressure. In particular for $N/f=1$, this equation ultimately simplifies to a radial diffusion equation, which admits an analytical self-similar solution. Direct numerical simulations further confirm the theoretical predictions that are not accessible to laboratory measurements. Notably, they show that the azimuthal shear stress generates secondary circulations, which advect the density anomaly: this mechanism is responsible for the slow time evolution, rather than the classical viscous dissipation of the azimuthal kinetic energy. The importance of density diffusivity is also analysed, showing that the product of the Schmidt and Burger numbers – rather than the bare Schmidt number – quantifies the importance of salt diffusion. Finally, a brief application to oceanic Meddies is considered.

A buoyancy-induced, columnar vortex is deliberately triggered in the unstably stratified air layer over a heated ground plane and is anchored within, and scales with, an azimuthal array of vertical, stator-like planar flow vanes that form an open-top enclosure and impart tangential momentum to the radially entrained air flow. The columnar vortex comprises three coupled primary flow domains: a spiraling surface momentum boundary layer of ground-heated air, an inner thermally driven vertical vortex core and an outer annular flow that is bounded by a helical shear layer and the vanes along its inner and outer edges, respectively, and by the spiraling boundary layer from below. In common with free buoyant columnar (dust devil) vortices that occur spontaneously over solar-heated terrain in the natural environment, the stationary anchored vortex is self-sustained by the conversion of the potential energy of the entrained surface-heated air layer to the kinetic energy of the induced vortical flow that persists as long as the thermal stratification is maintained. This conversion occurs as radial vorticity produced within the surface boundary layer is tilted vertically near the vortex centreline by the buoyant air to form the core of the columnar vortex. The structure and dynamics of the buoyant vortex are investigated using high-resolution stereo particle image velocimetry with specific emphasis on the evolution of the vorticity distributions and their effects on the characteristic scales of the ensuing vortex and on the kinetic energy of the induced flow.

In this paper we present an exact and explicit nonlinear solution of a $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$-plane approximation to the governing equations which retains all Coriolis terms. The solution represents an equatorially trapped wave propagating in the presence of a constant underlying background current. In particular, we show that retention of the (relatively) small-scale centripetal forces in the governing equations enables us to admit currents of any physically plausible magnitude in the background flow.

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed to study the behaviour of flow past a sphere in the regime of high stratification (low Froude number $Fr$). In contrast to previous results at lower Reynolds numbers, which suggest monotone suppression of turbulence with increasing stratification in flow past a sphere, it is found that, below a critical $Fr$, increasing the stratification induces unsteady vortical motion and turbulent fluctuations in the near wake. The near wake is quantified by computing the energy spectra, the turbulence energy equation, the partition of energy into horizontal and vertical components, and the buoyancy Reynolds number. These diagnostics show that the stabilizing effect of buoyancy changes flow over the sphere to flow around the sphere. This qualitative change in the flow leads to a new regime of unsteady vortex shedding in the horizontal planes and intensified horizontal shear which result in turbulence regeneration.

Since their discovery by Yves Couder and Emmanuel Fort, droplets walking on a vibrating liquid bath have attracted considerable attention because they unexpectedly exhibit certain features reminiscent of quantum particles. While the behaviour of walking droplets in unbounded geometries has to a large extent been rationalized theoretically, no such rationale exists for their behaviour in the presence of boundaries, as arises in a number of key quantum analogue systems. We here present the results of a combined experimental and theoretical study of the interaction of walking droplets with a submerged planar barrier. Droplets exhibit non-specular reflection, with a small range of reflection angles that is only weakly dependent on the system parameters, including the angle of incidence. The observed behaviour is captured by simulations based on a theoretical model that treats the boundaries as regions of reduced wave speed, and rationalized in terms of momentum considerations.

A novel method to estimate unsteady aerodynamic force coefficients from pointwise velocity measurements is presented. As opposed to other existing methodologies, time-resolved full velocity fields are not required. The methodology is based on a resolvent-based reduced-order model which requires the mean flow to obtain physical flow structures and pointwise measurement to calibrate their amplitudes. A computationally affordable time-stepping methodology to obtain resolvent modes in non-trivial flow domains is introduced and compared with previous existing matrix-free and matrix-forming strategies. The technique is applied to the unsteady flow around an inclined square cylinder at low Reynolds number. The potential of the methodology is demonstrated through good agreement between the fluctuating pressure distribution on the cylinder and the temporal evolution of the unsteady lift and drag coefficients predicted by the model and those computed by direct numerical simulation.

In their bipolar-coordinate analysis of circular-cylinder electrophoresis near a dielectric wall, Keh et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 231, 1991, pp. 211–228) found that, when an electric field is applied parallel to the wall, the translational and rotational electrophoretic mobilities increase monotonically as the ratio $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$ of the cylinder–wall separation to the cylinder radius decreases, eventually diverging as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}^{-1/2}$ when $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}\rightarrow 0$. Considering the singular limit $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}\ll 1$ from the outset, we conduct here an asymptotic analysis of that electrokinetic problem, providing insight to the manner by which the intense electric field in the narrow gap is transformed into $O(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}^{-3/2})$ shear stresses; these stresses, in turn, overcome the large Stokes resistance so as to provide the large electrophoretic mobilities. In a companion problem, where the cylinder is exposed to a uniform current emanating from a nearby reactive electrode, the intense gap-scale electric field results in an $O(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}^{-2})$ pressure, giving rise in turn to a large repulsive force. In that problem we find that the cylinder velocity perpendicular to the wall approaches a finite limit as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}\rightarrow 0$. We also discuss the role of ‘dielectrophoretic’ forces which are inevitable in the above semi-bounded configurations.

A laboratory investigation was performed to study distinctive features of the laminar-to-turbulent transition over distributed roughness characterized by two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) periodic, low-order topographies at roughness Reynolds number $Re_{k}\approx 300$. Systematic experiments were performed using high-spatial-resolution planar particle image velocimetry (PIV) in a refractive-index-matching (RIM) channel, where the roughness covered the entire length of the test section. The results show that the flow over the 2D roughness becomes turbulent much sooner than its 3D counterpart ($Re_{x}=50\,000$ versus 120 000). This is attributed to the presence of a velocity inflection point resulting from flow separation within the troughs of the 2D roughness. In the transitional region, unsteady disturbances above the two roughnesses appear upstream of near-roughness disturbances. The above-roughness disturbances are associated with the inflection point in the vertically displaced boundary layer for the 2D case, and with the mean velocity deficit resulting from the interaction of the wakes of upstream elements for the 3D case. The near-roughness fluctuations are associated with the shear layer present behind the crests of both roughnesses. The transitional region is characterized by the interaction between above- and near-roughness disturbances, which merge, leading to a rapid vertical growth of the turbulent fluctuations.
