Starting from a kinetic theory (KT) model for monodisperse granular flow, the exact Reynolds-averaged (RA) equations are derived for the particle phase in a collisional fluid–particle flow. The corresponding equations for a constant-density fluid phase are derived from a model that includes drag and buoyancy coupling with the particle phase. The fully coupled macroscale/hydrodynamic model, rigorously derived from a kinetic equation for the particles, is written in terms of the particle-phase volume fraction, the particle-phase velocity and the granular temperature (or total granular energy). As derived from the hydrodynamic model, the RA turbulence model solves for the RA particle-phase volume fraction, the phase-averaged (PA) particle-phase velocity, the PA granular temperature and the PA turbulent kinetic energy of the particle phase. Thus, unlike in most previous derivations of macroscale turbulence models for moderately dense granular flows, a clear distinction is made between the PA granular temperature $\Theta _\textit {p}$, which appears in the KT constitutive relations, and the particle-phase turbulent kinetic energy $k_\textit {p}$, which appears in the turbulent transport coefficients. The exact RA equations contain unclosed terms due to nonlinearities in the hydrodynamic model and we briefly discuss the available closures for these terms. Finally, we demonstrate by comparing model predictions with direct numerical simulation results that even for non-collisional fluid–particle flows it is necessary to provide separate models for $\Theta _\textit {p}$ and $k_\textit {p}$ in order to correctly account for the effect of the particle Stokes number and mass loading.

Analytical expressions are derived for the velocity vector, the stress components and the viscosity function in fully developed channel and pipe flow of Phan-Thien–Tanner (PTT) fluids; both the linearized and the exponential forms of the PTT equation are considered. The solution shows that the wall shear stress of a PTT fluid is substantially smaller than the corresponding value for a Newtonian or upper-convected Maxwell fluid, with implications for comparing predicted and measured values in a non-dimensional form.

The evolution of infinitesimal material line and surface elements in homogeneous isotropic turbulence is studied using velocity-gradient data generated by direct numerical simulations (DNS). The mean growth rates of length ratio (l) and area ratio (A) of material elements are much smaller than previously estimated by Batchelor (1952) owing to the effects of vorticity and of non-persistent straining. The probability density functions (p.d.f.'s) of l/〈l〉 and A/〈A〉 do not attain stationarity as hypothesized by Batchelor (1952). It is shown analytically that the random variable l/〈l〉 cannot be stationary if the variance and integral timescale of the strain rate along a material line are non-zero and DNS data confirm that this is indeed the case. The application of the central limit theorem to the material element evolution equations suggests that the standardized variables $\hat{l}(\equiv (\ln l - \langle \ln l\rangle)/({\rm var} l)^{\frac{1}{2}})$ and Â(≡(ln A − 〈ln A〉)/(var A)½) should attain stationary distributions that are Gaussian for all Reynolds numbers. The p.d.f.s of $\hat{l}$ and  calculated from DNS data appear to attain stationary shapes that are independent of Reynolds number. The stationary values of the flatness factor and super-skewness of both $\hat{l}$ and  are in close agreement with those of a Gaussian distribution. Moreover, the mean and variance of ln l (and ln A) grow linearly in time (normalized by the Kolmogorov timescale, τη), at rates that are nearly independent of Reynolds number. The statistics of material volume-element deformation are also studied and are found to be nearly independent of Reynolds number. An initially spherical infinitesimal volume of fluid deforms into an ellipsoid. It is found that the largest and the smallest of the principal axes grow and shrink respectively, exponentially in time at comparable rates. Consequently, to conserve volume, the intermediate principal axis remains approximately constant.

The performance of the stochastic model of Girimaji & Pope (1990) for the velocity gradients is also studied. The model estimates of the growth rates of 〈ln l〉 and 〈ln A〉 are close to the DNS values. The growth rate of the variances are estimated by the model to within 17%. The stationary distributions of $\hat{l}$ and  obtained from the model agree very well with those calculated from DNS data. The model also performs well in calculating the statistics of material volume-element deformation.

The structure of turbulent boundary layers which develop with zero pressure gradient on a smooth wall and a k-type rough wall was examined using arrays of X-wires. Although the data were obtained only on two orthogonal planes, the technique provides some information on the three-dimensionality of the large-scale structures. The major effect of the roughness is to tilt the inclination of the structures towards the wall-normal direction. This is caused by the reduced damping of the wall-normal velocity fluctuations close to the rough surface and the break-up of structures whose scales are comparable to the size of the roughness elements. Both effects cause a reduction in the streamwise lengthscales, as suggested by all the measured two-point correlations. The correlations also show that the roughness tends to reduce the overall anisotropy of the large-scale motion. There is evidence to suggest that the magnitude of the vorticity field is larger over the rough wall.

Mean flow measurements are presented for fully developed turbulent pipe flow over a Reynolds number range of $57\,{\times}\,10^3$ to $21\,{\times}\,10^6$ where the flow exhibits hydraulically smooth, transitionally rough, and fully rough behaviours. The surface of the pipe was prepared with a honing tool, typical of many engineering applications, achieving a ratio of characteristic roughness height to pipe diameter of 1 : 17000. Results for the friction factor show that in the transitionally rough regime this surface follows a Nikuradse (1933)-type inflectional relationship rather than the monotonic Colebrook (1939) relationship used in the Moody diagram. This result supports previous suggestions that the Moody diagram in the transitional regime must be used with caution. Outer scaling of the mean velocity data shows excellent collapse and strong evidence for Townsend's outer layer similarity hypothesis for rough-walled flows. Finally, the pipe exhibited smooth behaviour for scaled roughness height $k_s^+ \,{\le}\, 3.5$, which supports the suggestion by Zagarola & Smits (1998) that their pipe was hydraulically smooth for $Re_D\,\,{\leq}\, 24\,{\times}\,10^6$.

The role of the streamwise vortices on the aeroacoustics of a Mach 0.9 axisymmetric jet is investigated using two different devices to generate streamwise vortices: microjets and chevrons. The resultant acoustic field is mapped by sideline microphones and a microphone phased array. The flow-field characteristics within the first few diameters of the nozzle exit are obtained using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV). The flow-field measurements reveal that the counter-rotating streamwise vortex pairs generated by microjets are located primarily at the high-speed side of the initial shear layer. In contrast, the chevrons generate vortices of greater strength that reside mostly on the low-speed side. Although the magnitude of the chevron's axial vorticity is initially higher, it decays more rapidly with downstream distance. As a result, their influence is confined to a smaller region of the jet. The axial vorticity generated by both devices produces an increase in local entrainment and mixing, increasing the near-field turbulence levels. It is argued that the increase in high-frequency sound pressure levels (SPL) commonly observed in the far-field noise spectrum is due to the increase in the turbulence levels close to the jet exit on the high-speed side of the shear layer. The greater persistence and lower strength of the streamwise vortices generated by microjets appear to shift the cross-over frequencies to higher values and minimize the high-frequency lift in the far-field spectrum. The measured overall sound pressure level (OASPL) shows that microjet injection provides relatively uniform noise suppression for a wider range of sound radiation angles when compared to that of a chevron nozzle.

Experiments are reported on the dynamics of a bed of particles sheared by a viscous Couette flow in an annular channel, with emphasis on the distributions of particle velocities, durations and lengths of the small saltation flights, and surface density of the moving particles. The velocity distributions are shown to decay approximately exponentially, with mean value, $U_{p}$, equal to $0.1\,\gamma d$, where $\gamma$ is the shear rate and $d$ is the particle diameter. The duration of the flights does not depend on the shear rate, and is equal to 15 times the settling time $d/V_{S}$, where $V_{S}$ is the Stokes settling velocity. Starting from an initially loosely packed bed, the surface density of the moving particles, $N_{p}$, was observed to decrease slowly over several days, unlike their velocity which remains constant with time. This decay is related to the increase of the threshold shear rate for particle motion, and corresponds to rearrangement of the particles near the bed surface (armouring). When the stationary state is reached, $N_{p}$ depends linearly on the shear rate, so that the particle flow rate, $Q_{p} \,{=}\, N_{p}U_{p}$, is a quadratic function of the shear rate. Two theoretical models are proposed to account for these observations. In the first one, the erosion and deposition rates are modelled using the two hydrodynamic time scales: the inverse shear rate $\gamma^{-1}$ for the erosion rate, and the settling time $d/V_{S}$ for the deposition rate. This model accounts for the linear dependence of $N_{p}$ on the shear rate. The second model was developed to capture the slow decrease of $N_{p}$, by considering the trapping of moving particles into troughs of the bed. This trapping model does recover the main features observed experimentally, although the characteristic time for the decrease of $N_{p}$ still remains too short. Our observations are, finally, compared to existing numerical and experimental studies on turbulent flows.

The three-dimensional development of controlled transition in a flat-plate boundary layer is investigated by direct numerical simulation (DNS) using the complete Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical investigations are based on the so-called spatial model, thus allowing realistic simulations of spatially developing transition phenomena as observed in laboratory experiments. For solving the Navier-Stokes equations, an efficient and accurate numerical method was developed employing fourth-order finite differences in the downstream and wall-normal directions and treating the spanwise direction pseudo-spectrally. The present paper focuses on direct simulations of the wind-tunnel experiments by Kachanov et al. (1984, 1985) of fundamental breakdown in controlled transition. The numerical results agreed very well with the experimental measurements up to the second spike stage, in spite of relatively coarse spanwise resolution. Detailed analysis of the numerical data allowed identification of the essential breakdown mechanisms. In particular, from our numerical data, we could identify the dominant shear layers and vortical structures that are associated with this breakdown process.

We study the flow of two immiscible fluids of different viscosities and equal density through a pipe under a pressure gradient. This problem has a continuum of solutions corresponding to arbitrarily prescribed interface shapes. The question therefore arises as to which of these solutions are stable and thus observable. Experiments have shown a tendency for the thinner fluid to encapsulate the thicker one. This has been ‘explained’ by the viscous-dissipation principle, which postulates that the amount of viscous dissipation is minimized for a given flow rate. For a circular pipe, this predicts a concentric configuration with the more viscous fluid located at the core. A linear stability analysis, which is carried out numerically, shows that while this configuration is stable when the more viscous fluid occupies most of the pipe, it is not stable when there is more of the thin fluid. Therefore the dissipation principle does not always hold, and the volume ratio is a crucial factor.

The mean flow development in an initially turbulent boundary layer subjected to a large favourable pressure gradient beginning at a point x0 is examined through analyses expected a priori to be valid on either side of relaminarization. The ‘quasi-laminar’ flow in the later stages of reversion, where the Reynolds stresses have by definition no significant effect on the mean flow, is described by an asymptotic theory constructed for large values of a pressure-gradient parameter Λ, scaled on a characteristic Reynolds stress gradient. The limiting flow consists of an inner laminar boundary layer and a matching inviscid (but rotational) outer layer. There is consequently no entrainment to lowest order in Λ−1, and the boundary layer thins down to conserve outer vorticity. In fact, the predictions of the theory for the common measures of boundary-layer thickness are in excellent agreement with experimental results, almost all the way from x0. On the other hand the development of wall parameters like the skin friction suggests the presence of a short bubble-shaped reverse-transitional region on the wall, where neither turbulent nor quasi-laminar calculations are valid. The random velocity fluctuations inherited from the original turbulence decay with distance, in the inner layer, according to inverse-power laws characteristic of quasi-steady perturbations on a laminar flow. In the outer layer, there is evidence that the dominant physical mechanism is a rapid distortion of the turbulence, with viscous and inertia forces playing a secondary role. All the observations available suggest that final retransition to turbulence quickly follows the onset of instability in the inner layer.

It is concluded that reversion in highly accelerated flows is essentially due to domination of pressure forces over the slowly responding Reynolds stresses in an originally turbulent flow, accompanied by the generation of a new laminar boundary layer stabilized by the favourable pressure gradient.

Unsteady flow over a stationary sphere with a small fluctuation in the free-stream velocity is considered at small Reynolds number, Re. A matched asymptotic solution is obtained for the frequency-dependent (or the acceleration-dependent) part of the unsteady flow at very small frequency, ω, under the restriction St [Lt ] Re [Lt ] 1, where St is the Strouhal number. The acceleration-dependent part of the unsteady drag is found to be proportional to St ∼ ω instead of the ω½ dependence predicted by Stokes’ solution. Consequently, the expression for the Basset history force is incorrect for large time even for very small Reynolds numbers. Present results compare well with the previous numerical results of Mei, Lawrence & Adrian (1991) using a finite-difference method for the same unsteady flow at small Reynolds number. Using the principle of causality, the present analytical results at small Re, the numerical results at finite Re for low frequency, and Stokes’ results for high frequency, a modified expression for the history force is proposed in the time domain. It is confirmed by comparing with the finite-difference results at arbitrary frequency through Fourier transformation. The modified history force has an integration kernel that decays as t−2, instead of t½, at large time for both small and finite Reynolds numbers.

Electrokinetic flow instabilities occur under high electric fields in the presence of electrical conductivity gradients. Such instabilities are a key factor limiting the robust performance of complex electrokinetic bio-analytical systems, but can also be exploited for rapid mixing and flow control for microscale devices. This paper reports a representative flow instability phenomenon studied using a microfluidic T-junction with a cross-section of 11 $\umu$m by 155 $\umu$m. In this system, aqueous electrolytes of 10:1 conductivity ratio were electrokinetically driven into a common mixing channel by a steady electric field. Convectively unstable waves were observed with a nominal threshold field of $0.5\,\hbox{kV}\,\hbox{cm}^{-1}$, and upstream propagating waves were observed at $1.5\,\hbox{kV}\,\hbox{cm}^{-1}$. A physical model has been developed for this instability which captures the coupling between electric and flow fields. A linear stability analysis was performed on the governing equations in the thin-layer limit, and Briggs–Bers criteria were applied to select physically unstable modes and determine the nature of instability. The model predicts both qualitative trends and quantitative features that agree very well with experimental data, and shows that conductivity gradients and their associated bulk charge accumulation are crucial for such instabilities. Comparison between theory and experiments suggests the convective role of electro-osmotic flow. Scaling analysis and numerical results show that the instability is governed by two key controlling parameters: the ratio of dynamic to dissipative forces which governs the onset of instability, and the ratio of electroviscous to electro-osmotic velocities which governs the convective versus absolute nature of instability.

Experimental results on flow-field statistics are presented for turbulent oscillatory flow in a circular pipe for the range of Reynolds numbers Reδ = U0δ/ν (U0 = amplitude of cross-sectional mean velocity, δ = (2ν/ω)½) = Stokes layer thickness) from 550 to 2000 and Stokes parameters Λ = R/δ (R = radius of the pipe) from 5 to 10. Axial and radial velocity components were measured simultaneously using a two-colour laser-Doppler anemometer, providing information on ensemble-averaged velocity profiles as well as various turbulence statistics for different phases during the cycle. In all flows studied, turbulence appeared explosively towards the end of the acceleration phase of the cycle and was sustained throughout the deceleration phase. During the turbulent portion of the cycle, production of turbulence was restricted to the wall region of the pipe and was the result of turbulent bursts. The statistics of the resulting turbulent flow showed a great deal of similarity to results for steady turbulent pipe flows; in particular the three-layer description of the flow consisting of a viscous sublayer, a logarithmic layer (with von Kármán constant = 0.4) and an outer wake could be identified at each phase if the corresponding ensemble-averaged wall-friction velocities were used for normalization. Consideration of similarity laws for these flows reveals that the existence of a logarithmic layer is a dimensional necessity whenever at least two of the scales R, u*/ω and ν/u* are widely separated; with the exact structure of the flow being dependent upon the parameters u*/Rω and u2*/ων. During the initial part of the acceleration phase, production of turbulence as well as turbulent Reynolds stresses were reduced to very low levels and the velocity profiles were in agreement with laminar theory. Nevertheless, the fluctuations retained a small but finite energy. In Part 2 of this paper, the major features observed in these experiments are used as a guideline, in conjunction with direct numerical simulations of the ‘perturbed’ Navier–Stokes equations for oscillatory flow in a channel, to identify the nature of the instability that is most likely to be responsible for transition in this class of flows.

It is known experimentally that laminar circular Couette flow between two concentric circular cylinders, the outer of which is fixed, becomes unstable when the speed of the inner cylinder is high enough. The flow is then replaced by a new circumferential flow with superimposed toroidal (or Taylor) vortices spaced periodically along the axis. At a higher speed still the new flow develops another instability, and is replaced by a flow in which the axially periodic vortices are simultaneously periodic travelling waves in the azimuth.

In the present paper an attack is made on the problem of instability of the Taylor-vortex flow against perturbations which are periodic both in the axial and azimuthal co-ordinates and, moreover, travel with some phase velocity in the latter. Subject to a number of assumptions and approximations, which are detailed in the paper, it is found that the Taylor-vortex flow is stable against perturbations with the same axial wavelength and phase, but unstable against perturbations differing in phase by ½π. After instability the new flow no longer has planes separating neighbouring vortices, but has wavy surfaces travelling in the azimuth. This feature is in accord with much (though not all) of the experimental evidence.

The critical Taylor number (proportional to the square of the speed) at which the Taylor vortices become unstable is found theoretically to be about 8% above the value for which Taylor vortices first appear. This must be compared with a value in the range 5-20% for the experiments which our work models most closely. The azimuthal wave-number given a slight preference by theory is 1, in agreement with those experiments.

The effects of convection and refraction dominate the heart-shaped pattern of jet noise. These can be corrected out to yield the small ‘basic directivity’ of the eddy noise generators. The observed quasi-ellipsoidal pattern was predicted by Ribner (1963, 1964) in a variant of the Lighthill theory postulating isotropic turbulence superposed on a mean shear flow. This had the feature of dealing with the joint effects of the quadrupoles without displaying them individually. The present paper reformulates the theory so as to calculate the relative contributions of the different quadrupole self and cross-correlations to the sound emitted in a given direction. Some minor errors are corrected.

Of the thirty-six possible quadrupole correlations only nine yield distinct non-vanishing contributions to the axisymmetric noise pattern of a round jet. The correlations contribute either cos4θ, cos2θ sin2θ or sin4θ directional patterns, where θ is the angle with the jet axis. A separation into parts called ‘self noise’ (from turbulence alone) and ‘shear noise’ (jointly from turbulence and mean flow) may be made.

The nine self-noise patterns combine as $A\; cos^4\theta(1)+A\; cos^2sin^2\theta(\frac{7}{8}+\frac{7}{8}+\frac{1}{8}+\frac{1}{8})+A sin^2 \theta (\frac {12}{32} & + & \frac{12}{32}+\frac{7}{32}+\frac{1}{32})\\ & = & A(cos^2\theta+sin^\theta)^2 = A;$ this is uniform in all directions as it must be, arising from isotropic turbulence. The two non-vanishing shear-noise correlation patterns combine as $B\;cos^4\theta (1) + B\;cos^2\theta sin^2\theta(\frac{1}{2})=B(cos^2\theta+sin^2\theta)^2 = A;$

The overall ‘basic’ pattern (self noise plus shear noise) thus has the form A + B(cos2θ + cos4θ)/2; this is a slight change from the previous result. The dimensional constants A and B are of comparable magnitude; the pattern in any plane through the jet axis thus resembles an ellipse of modest eccentricity.

Frequency spectra are also discussed, following the earlier work. Since the self noise depends quadratically on turbulent velocity components and the shear noise only linearly, there is a relative shift of the self noise to higher frequencies. This in conjunction with refraction figures in the explanation of the deeper pitch of jet noise radiated at small angles to the axis.

Finally, the predictions are shown to be compatible with recent experimental results.

Helium mass flow rates in a microchannel were measured, for a wide Knudsen-number range, in isothermal steady conditions. The flow Knudsen numbers, considered here, cover the range from continuum slip regime to the near free molecular regime. We used a single-channel system involved in an experimental platform more powerful than those previously used. The experimental errors and uncertainties were accurately investigated and estimated. In the continuum slip regime, it was found that the first-order approach is pertinent for Knudsen number between 0.03 and 0.3. Moreover, the slip coefficient was deduced by comparing the experiments with the theoretical first-order slip continuum approach. For Knudsen number between 0.03 and 0.7, a polynomial second-power form is proposed for the mass flow rate expression. Otherwise, the experimental results on the mass flow rate were compared with theoretical values calculated from kinetic approaches over the 0.03–50 Knudsen number range, and an overall agreement appears through the comparison. It was also found, when the Knudsen number increased, that the wall influence on measurement occurred first through the accommodation process in the transition regime followed by the wall influence through the aspect ratio in the free molecular regime.

Turbulence in solid-body rotation is generated by a flow of air passing through a rotating cylinder containing a dense honeycomb structure and a turbulence-producing grid. The velocity field is probed downstream of this device by hot-wire probes. Using the statistical quantities characterizing the fluctuating field, we show that the rotation affects mainly the components normal to the rotation axis and that these effects are triggered when the Rossby numbers constructed from macroscopic turbulent quantities, are less than unity. These results are discussed in the framework of other available experimental results on the subject. A theoretical interpretation, chiefly based on spectral analysis, is then proposed to explain the trends of the observations.

A plane, isothermal, chemically reacting mixing layer has been experimentally investigated to analyse the origin and the development of three-dimensional stream-wise vorticity. The results show that early in its evolution, the plane, free shear layer is composed of counter-rotating pairs of streamwise vortices superimposed upon the spanwise ones. This coherent, streamwise vortical structure was found to be the result of the unstable response of the layer to three-dimensional perturbations in the upstream conditions. Depending on the magnitude and location of the upstream disturbances, the location of the transition to three-dimensionality varied. However, the concentrated streamwise vorticity was always seen to form first on the braids between consecutive spanwise vortices and then to propagate into their cores.

For the low and moderate Reynolds numbers of this study, it was found that the onset of the so-called ‘mixing transition’ does not necessarily coincide with that of the formation of concentrated streamwise vorticity. These vortices were observed to have a scale, as measured by the size of their cores, somewhat smaller than but comparable with that of the spanwise ones, thus contributing substantially to the entrainment process in the early stages of mixing-layer development.

Bubble plumes in a linearly stratified ambient fluid are studied. Four well-defined flow regions were observed: an upward-moving bubble core, an inner plume consisting of a mixture of bubbles and relatively dense fluid, an annular downdraught and beyond that a horizontal intrusion flow. Depending on the gas flow rate with respect to the stratification, three types of intrusions were documented. At large gas flow rates a single intrusion was observed. As the gas flow rate was decreased, the buoyancy flux was insufficient to carry the lower fluid to the surface and a stack of intrusions were formed. At very low gas flow rates the intrusions became unsteady. The transition between these three regimes was observed to occur at critical values of the parameters N3H4/(QBg), QBg/ (4πα2u3sH), and H/HT, where N is the buoyancy frequency, H is the water depth, HT is equal to H + HA, HA being the atmospheric pressure head, QB is the gas flow rate at the bottom, g the acceleration due to gravity, α the entrainment coefficient and us the differential between the bubble and the average water velocity commonly called the slip velocity. The height between intrusions was found to scale with the Ozmidov length (QBg/N3)¼, the plunge point entrainment with the inner plume volume flux ($(Q_0 g)^{\frac{3}{4}} N^{-\frac{5}{4}}$ and the radial distance to the plunge point with (Q0g/N3)¾, where Q0 is the gas flow rate at the free surface.

These results were used to construct a double annular plume model which was used to investigate the efficiency of conversion of the input bubble energy to potential energy of the stratification; the efficiency was found to first increase, reach a maximum, then decrease with decreasing gas flow rate. This agreed well with the results from the laboratory experiments.

The motion of two drops in a uniform electric field is considered using the leaky dielectric model. The drops are assumed to have no native charge and a dielectrophoretic effect favours translation of the drops toward one another. However, circulatory flows that stem from electrohydrodynamic stresses may either act with or against this dielectrophoretic effect. Consequently, both prolate and oblate drop deformations may be generated and significant deformation occurs near drop contact owing to enhancement of the local electric field. For sufficiently widely spaced drops, electrohydrodynamic flows dominate direct electrical interactions so drops may be pushed apart, though closely spaced drops almost always move together as a result of the electrical interaction or deformation.
