Turbulence suppression by use of screens was studied in a small wind tunnel especially designed and built for the purpose. Wide ranges of mesh sizes and wire-diameter Reynolds numbers were covered in the present investigation, enabling the study of sub- and super-critical screens under the same, well-controlled, flow conditions. For the latter type small-scale fluctuations, produced by the screen itself, interact with the incoming turbulence. In the immediate vicinity of the screen the turbulence was found to be highly anisotropic and the intensities were higher than on the upstream side. Downstream of a short initial decay region, where the intensities decrease rapidly, the return to isotropy was found to be much slower than for the unmanipulated turbulence. The latter was generated by a square rod grid, and was shown to become practically isotropic beyond a distance of roughly 20 mesh widths from the grid. The role of the turbulence scales for the overall reduction effectiveness, and for the optimization of screen combinations for application in low-turbulence wind tunnels was studied.

We present a study of the forces during free-surface water entry of spheres of varying masses, diameters, and surface treatments. Previous studies have shown that the formation of a subsurface air cavity by a falling sphere is conditional upon impact speed and surface treatment. This study focuses on the forces experienced by the sphere in both cavity-forming and non-cavity-forming cases. Unsteady force estimates require accurate determination of the deceleration for both high and low mass ratios, especially as inertial and hydrodynamic effects approach equality. Using high-speed imaging, high-speed particle image velocimetry, and numerical simulation, we examine the nature of the forces in each case. The effect of mass ratio is shown, where a lighter sphere undergoes larger decelerations and more dramatic trajectory changes. In the non-cavity-forming cases, the forces are modulated by the growth and shedding of a strong, ring-like vortex structure. In the cavity-forming cases, little vorticity is shed by the sphere, and the forces are modulated by the unsteady pressure required for the opening and closing of the air cavity. A data-driven boundary-element-type method is developed to accurately describe the unsteady forces using cavity shape data from experiments.

We analyse the effects of small, circularly symmetric topography on the slow flow of an inviscid, incompressible, diffusionless, horizontally uniform, baroclinic current and show that the vertical influence depends primarily on three parameters: a stratification measure S (the square of the ratio of buoyancy frequency times height scale to Coriolis parameter times length scale), a topographic parameter β (ratio of scaled topographic height multiplied by scaled bottom current to Rossby number ε) and the scaled upstream shear u′0(z) (the dimensional upstream shear divided by the ratio of the r.m.s. upstream flow speed to height scale).

Investigating a linear stratification model we find that the topographic effect is depth independent if S [lsim ] ε and a Taylor column, as indicated by the appearance of closed streamlines above the bump, exists when β > 2. Moderate stratification (S ∼ 1) causes the flow to be fully three-dimensional and the Taylor column to be a conical vortex whose height depends on β S and u′0). The results are compared with Davies's (1971, 1972) experiments.

Our results tend to support the Taylor column theory of Jupiter's Great Red Spot but effects due to variations in the Coriolis parameter with latitude have been (unjustifiably) ne glected. Using typical values for the earths oceans we find that Taylor columns of significant height could be found there. Some pertinent observations from the ocean are discussed.

Numerical simulations are used to study the formation of vortex rings that are generated by applying a non-conservative force of long duration, simulating experimental vortex ring generation with large stroke ratio. For sufficiently long-duration forces, we investigate the extent to which properties of the leading vortex ring are invariant to the force distribution. The results confirm the existence of a universal ‘formation number’ defined by Gharib, Rambod & Shariff (1998), beyond which the leading vortex ring is separated from a trailing jet. We find that the formation process is governed by two non-dimensional parameters that are formed with three integrals of the motion (energy, circulation, and impulse) and the translation velocity of the leading vortex ring. Limiting values of the normalized energy and circulation of the leading vortex ring are found to be around 0.3 and 2.0, respectively, in agreement with the predictions of Mohseni & Gharib (1998). It is shown that under this normalization smaller variations in the circulation of the leading vortex ring are obtained than by scaling the circulation with parameters associated with the forcing. We show that by varying the spatial extent of the forcing or the forcing amplitude during the formation process, thicker rings with larger normalized circulation can be generated. Finally, the normalized energy and circulation of the leading vortex rings compare well with the same properties for vortices in the Norbury family with the same mean core radius.

Temporal linear stability modes depending on two space directions are computed for a two-dimensional boundary-layer flow along a flat plate. The spatial structure of each individual temporally stable mode is shown to be reminiscent of the spatial exponential growth of perturbations along the flat plate, as predicted by local analyses. It is shown using an optimal temporal growth analysis, that an appropriate superposition of a moderate number of temporal modes gives rise to a spatially localized wave packet, starting at inflow and exhibiting transient temporal growth when evolving downstream along the plate. This wave packet is in qualitative agreement with the convectively unstable disturbance observed when solving the Navier–Stokes equations for an equivalent initial condition.

Thermal convection in a fluid contained between two rigid walls with different mean temperatures is considered when either spatially periodic temperatures are prescribed at the walls or surface corrugations exist. The amplitudes of the spatial non-uniformities are assumed to be small, and the wavelength is set equal to the critical wavelength for the onset of Rayleigh-Bénard convection. For values of the mean Rayleigh number below the classical critical value, the mean Nusselt number and the mean flow are found as functions of Rayleigh number, Prandtl number, and modulation amplitude. For values of the Rayleigh number close to the classical critical value, the effects of the non-uniformities are greatly amplified, and the amplitude of convection is then governed by a cubic equation. This equation yields three supercritical states, but only the state linked to a subcritical state is found to be stable.

Although the entrainment of non-turbulent fluid into a turbulent flow occurs across sharply defined boundaries, its rate is not determined solely by the turbulent motion adjacent to the interface but depends on overall properties of the flow, in particular, on those that control the energy balance. In the first place, attention is directed to the many observations which show that the motion in many turbulent shear flows has a structure closely resembling that produced by a rapid, finite, plane shearing of initially isotropic turbulence. The basic reasons for the similarity are the stability and permanence of turbulent eddies and the finite distortions undergone by fluid parcels in free turbulent flows. Next, the existence of eddy similarity and the condition of overall balance of energy are used to account for the variation of entrainment rates within groups of broadly similar flows, in particular mixing layers between streams of different velocities and wall jets on curved surfaces. For some flows which satisfy the ordinary conditions for self-preserving development, no entrainment rate is consistent with the energy balance and self-preserving development is not possible. Examples are the axisymmetric, small-deficit wake and the distorted wake. Finally, the implications of an entrainment rate controlled by the general motion are discussed. It is concluded that the relatively rapid entrainment in a plane wake depends on an active instability of the interface, not present in a constant-pressure boundary layer whose slow rate of entrainment is from ‘passive’ distortion of the bounding surface by eddies of the main turbulent motion. Available observations tend to support this conclusion.

A complete analytical study is presented of the reflection and transmission of surface gravity waves incident on ice-covered ocean. The ice cover is idealized as a plate of elastic material for which flexural motions are described by the Timoshenko–Mindlin equation. A suitable non-dimensionalization extracts parameters useful for the characterization of ocean-wave and ice-sheet interactions, and for scaled laboratory studies. The scattering problem is simplified using Fourier transforms and the Wiener–Hopf technique; the solution is eventually written down in terms of some easily evaluated quadratures. An important feature of this solution is that the physical conditions at the edge of the ice sheet are explicitly built into the analysis, and power-flow theorems provide verification of the results. Asymptotic results for large and small values of the non-dimensional parameters are extracted and approximations are given for general parameter values.

When the coating film around a vertical fibre exceeds a critical thickness hc, the interfacial disturbances triggered by Rayleigh instability can undergo accelerated growth such that localized drops much larger in dimension than the film thickness appear. We associate the initial period of this strongly nonlinear drop formation phenomenon with a self-similar intermediate asymptotic blow-up solution to the long-wave evolution equation which describes how static capillary forces drain fluid into the drop. Below hc, we show that strongly nonlinear coupling between the mean flow and axial curvature produces a finite-amplitude solitary wave solution which prevents local finite-time blow up and hence disallows further growth into drops. We thus estimate hc by determining the existence of solitary wave solutions. This is accomplished by a matched asymptotic analysis which joins the capillary outer region of a large solitary wave to the thin-film inner region. Our estimate of hc = 1.68R3H–2, where R is the fibre radius and H is the capillary length H = (σ/ρg)½, is favourably compared to experimental data.

The expansion of an arbitrary two-dimensional solution of the linearized stream-function equation in terms of the discrete and continuum eigenfunctions of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation is discussed for flows in the half-space, y ε [0, ∞). A recent result of Salwen is used to derive a biorthogonality relation between the solution of the linearized equation for the stream function and the solutions of the adjoint problem.

For the case of temporal stability, the orthogonality relation obtained is equivalent to that of Schensted for bounded flows. This relationship is used to carry out the formal solution of the initial-value problem for temporal stability. It is found that the vorticity of the disturbance at t = 0 is the proper initial condition for the temporal stability problem. Finally, it is shown that the set consisting of the discrete eigen-modes and continuum eigenfunctions is complete.

For the spatial stability problem, it is shown that the continuous spectrum of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation contains four branches. The biorthogonality relation is used to derive the formal solution to the boundary-value problem of spatial stability. It is shown that the boundary-value problem of spatial stability requires the stream function and its first three partial derivatives with respect to x to be specified at x = 0 for all t. To be applicable to practical problems, this solution will require modification to eliminate disturbances originating at x = ∞ and travelling upstream to x = 0.

For the special case of a constant base flow, the method is used to calculate the evolution in time of a particular initial disturbance.

We study experimentally and theoretically the evolution of two-dimensional patterns in the Rayleigh—Taylor instability of a thin layer of viscous fluid spread on a solid surface. Various kinds of patterns of different symmetries are observed, with possible transition between patterns, the preferred symmetries being the axial and hexagonal ones. Starting from the lubrication hypothesis, we derive the nonlinear evolution equation of the interface, and the amplitude equation of its Fourier components. The evolution laws of the different patterns are calculated at order two or three, the preferred symmetries being related to the non-invariance of the system by amplitude reflection. We also discuss qualitatively the dripping at final stage of the instability.

A discrete vortex method was used to analyse the separated non-steady flow about a cambered airfoil. The foil flow modelling is based on the thin lifting-surface approach, where the chordwise location of the separation point is assumed to be known from experiments or flow-visualization data. Calculated results provided good agreement when compared with the post-stall aerodynamic data of two airfoils. Those airfoil sections differed in the extent of travel of the separation point with increasing angle of attack. Furthermore, the periodic wake shedding was analysed and its time-dependent influence on the airfoil was investigated.

The acoustic radiation pressure exerted by a plane — progressive or standing — sound wave on a compressible sphere suspended freely in a viscous fluid is calculated. In deriving the general expression for the radiation pressure, it is supposed that the radius of the sphere is arbitrary. Two limiting cases of interest are then considered. In the first of these, it is assumed that the sound wavelength is much larger than the radius of the sphere which is, in turn, much larger than the viscous wavelength, it being supposed that this condition is satisfied both outside and inside the sphere. In the second case, the situation is investigated when the radius of the sphere is small compared with the viscous wavelength which is, in turn, much smaller than the sound wavelength, it being supposed that this condition is satisfied, as before, both outside and inside the sphere. It is shown that in both cases the expressions for the radiation pressure are drastically different from the well-known expressions for the radiation pressure in a perfect fluid: the calculation of the radiation pressure from the formulae obtained for a perfect fluid in the cases when the effect of viscosity is not negligible gives both quantitatively and qualitatively wrong results.

The decay of grid-generated turbulence in the presence of strong thermal stratification is studied in a continuously stratified, open-loop wind tunnel at Brunt–Väisälä frequencies up to 2.5s−1. The data include one-point statistical measurements through moments of fourth order and associated power- and cross-spectra. Cross-channel phase measurements are used to analyse the scales of correlation of velocity and temperature. The present data are considerably more coherent than previous salt-stratified data, and the structural form of stratified turbulence is thus more clearly manifested. No internal wave effects are observed at any stage of the decay. Stratified turbulence is found to be a two-scale process dominated by buoyancy forces at large scales of motion and dissipative effects at small scales. The two-scale structure is used to develop universal buoyancy scalings for the decay of the vertical heat flux, the scalar variance, and the molecular dissipation rates, and, in particular, for the vertical velocity decay. Velocity and temperature spectra satisfy universal equilibrium scaling at high wavenumbers, but show buoyancy effects at small wavenumbers. The flow remains isotropic at high wavenumbers over the entire range of turbulent decay studied. Cospectral and phase data are used to validate the two-scale model of the turbulence. The flow may show large-scale restratification while active turbulence persists at smaller scales, so that the vanishing of the vertical transport does not represent extinction of turbulent motion. Additionally, an original universal equilibrium scaling is developed for the cross-spectrum. Lengthscale evolution is measured, and the overturning and buoyancy lengthscales (associated with potential and kinetic energy, respectively) are found to characterize flow development. The role of the Prandtl number is assessed by comparison to previous works, and the Prandtl number is found to have a significant influence upon stratified turbulence evolution.

Experimental investigations of the boundary layer receptivity, on the sharp leading edge of a at plate, to acoustic waves induced by two-dimensional and three- dimensional perturbers, have been performed for a free-stream Mach number M∞ = 5.92. The fields of controlled free-stream disturbances were studied. It was shown that two-dimensional and three-dimensional perturbers radiate acoustic waves and that these perturbers present a set of harmonic motionless sources and moving sources with constant amplitude. The disturbances excited in the boundary layer were measured. It was found that acoustic waves impinging on the leading edge generate Tollmien–Schlichting waves in the boundary layer. The receptivity coefficients were obtained for several radiation conditions and intensities. It was shown that there is a dependence of receptivity coefficients on the wave inclination angles.

The momentum and mass conservation equations derived in part 1 are used in the limiting case of large solids-to-fluid density ratio. Bubbles generally appear in such fluidized beds and solutions are obtained which describe the motion of the particulate and fluid phases in the presence of a fully developed bubble. The analytical solutions are shown to be in fair agreement with experiment.

The stability of supercritical Couette flow has been studied extensively, but few measurements of the velocity field of flow have been made. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure the axial and radial velocities in a meridional plane for non-wavy and wavy Taylor–Couette flow in the annulus between a rotating inner cylinder and a fixed outer cylinder with fixed end conditions. The experimental results for the Taylor vortex flow indicate that as the inner cylinder Reynolds number increases, the vortices become stronger and the outflow between pairs of vortices becomes increasingly jet-like. Wavy vortex flow is characterized by azimuthally wavy deformation of the vortices both axially and radially. The axial motion of the vortex centres decreases monotonically with increasing Reynolds number, but the radial motion of the vortex centres has a maximum at a moderate Reynolds number above that required for transition. Significant transfer of fluid between neighbouring vortices occurs in a cyclic fashion at certain points along an azimuthal wave, so that while one vortex grows in size, the two adjacent vortices become smaller, and vice versa. At other points in the azimuthal wave, there is an azimuthally local net axial flow in which fluid winds around the vortices with a sense corresponding to the axial deformation of the wavy vortex tube. These measurements also confirm that the shift-and-reflect symmetry used in computational studies of wavy vortex flow is a valid approach.

The motion of a sphere in the presence of a fluid-fluid interface is studied. First, a solution is derived for a point force near a plane interface. Then the solution is extended to include the higher-order terms which are required to describe the motion of a solid sphere. Singularities of higher orders at the centre of the sphere are obtained by using the method of reflexions. For a fluid–fluid interface with an arbitrary viscosity ratio, the drag force and the hydrodynamic torque are calculated for the special cases of motion of a sphere perpendicular and parallel to the interface. In addition, the rotational motion of a sphere is also investigated.

This paper presents an experimental study devoted to investigating the effects of permeability on wall turbulence. Velocity measurements were performed by means of laser Doppler anemometry in open channel flows over walls characterized by a wide range of permeability. Previous studies proposed that the von Kármán coefficient associated with mean velocity profiles over permeable walls is significantly lower than the standard values reported for flows over smooth and rough walls. Furthermore, it was observed that turbulent flows over permeable walls do not fully respect the widely accepted paradigm of outer-layer similarity. Our data suggest that both anomalies can be explained as an effect of poor inner–outer scale separation if the depth of shear penetration within the permeable wall is considered as the representative length scale of the inner layer. We observed that with increasing permeability, the near-wall structure progressively evolves towards a more organized state until it reaches the condition of a perturbed mixing layer where the shear instability of the inflectional mean velocity profile dictates the scale of the dominant eddies. In our experiments such shear instability eddies were detected only over the wall with the highest permeability. In contrast attached eddies were present over all the other wall conditions. On the basis of these findings, we argue that the near-wall structure of turbulent flows over permeable walls is regulated by a competing mechanism between attached and shear instability eddies. We also argue that the ratio between the shear penetration depth and the boundary layer thickness quantifies the ratio between such eddy scales and, therefore, can be used as a diagnostic parameter to assess which eddy structure dominates the near-wall region for different wall permeability and flow conditions.

A general theory for two-dimensional vortex interactions is developed from the observation that, under slowly changing external influences, an individual vortex evolves through a series of equilibrium states until such a state proves unstable. Once an unstable equilibrium state is reached, a relatively fast unsteady evolution ensues, typically involving another nearby vortex. During this fast unsteady evolution, a fraction of the original coherent circulation is lost to filamentary debris, and, remarkably, the flow reorganizes into a set of quasi-steady stable vortices.

The simplifying feature of the proposed theory is its use of adiabatic steadiness and marginal stability to determine the shapes and separation distance of vortices on the brink of an inelastic interaction. As a result, the parameter space for the inelastic interaction of nearby vortices is greatly reduced. In the case of two vortex patches, which is the focus of the present work, inelastic interactions depend only on a single parameter: the area ratio of the two vortices (taking the vorticity magnitude inside each to be equal). Without invoking adiabatic steadiness and marginal stability, one would have to contend with the additional parameters of vortex separation and shape, and the latter is actually an infinitude of parameters.
