The paper employs methods of multitype branching processes to evaluate the probability of survival of mutable clones under environmental conditions which are unfavorable to the original parent of the clone. When other factors are taken to be constant, the long-term survival probability of a clone is implicitly demonstrated as a function of the intrinsic rate of mutation carried by this clone. The existence of a mutation rate which maximizes clone survival probability is shown and the effects of environmental deterioration on this optimal rate are studied. Finally, rigorous quantitative results are obtained for the classical situation of a Poisson distribution of offspring numbers. These results are then applied to the biological problem of indirect selection (Eshel (1972)).

In [1] the authors dealt with a particular queueing system in which arrivals occurred in a Poisson stream and the probability differential of a service completion was μσn when the queue contained n customers. Much of the theory could not be carried out further analytically for a general σn, which is a purely n-dependent quantity. To carry the analysis further to the extent of finding the “effective” service time and the waiting time distribution when σn is a linear function of n, (which is considered to be rather general and sufficient for practical purposes), constitutes the subject matter of this paper.

The first-passage problem for the one-dimensional Wiener process with drift in the presence of elastic boundaries is considered. We use the Kolmogorov backward equation with corresponding boundary conditions to derive explicit closed-form expressions for the expected value and the variance of the first-passage time. Special cases with pure absorbing and/or reflecting barriers arise for a certain choice of a parameter constellation.

A limit theorem for inter-record times is obtained which seems to explain many of their known asymptotic properties. The process of inter-record times is shown to be approximately non-homogeneous Poisson.

A contact process first posed as a random mapping problem is discussed together with a model for the spread of a rumour through an archaic telephone system. Snowball sampling and the well-known Reed–Frost chain binomial model are also commented on. Our main interest and emphasis is on distributional properties of discrete-time models. Simple combinatorial arguments are used along with a class of discrete distributions originally proposed for catch–recapture sampling.

We consider the exact distribution of the number of peaks in a random permutation of the integers 1, 2, ···, n. This arises from a test of whether n successive observations from a continuous distribution are i.i.d. The Eulerian numbers, which figure in the p.g.f., are then shown to provide a link between the simpler problem of ascents (which has been thoroughly analysed) and both our problem of peaks and similar problems on the circle. This link then permits easy deduction of certain general properties, such as linearity in n of the cumulants, in the more complex settings. Since the focus of the paper is on exact distributional results, a uniform bound on the deviation from the limiting normal is included. A secondary purpose of the paper is synthesis, beginning with the more familiar setting of peaks and troughs.

Let ψ(u) be the ruin probability in a risk process with initial reserve u, Poisson arrival rate β, claim size distribution B and premium rate p(x) at level x of the reserve. Let y(x) be the non-zero solution of the local Lundberg equation . It is shown that is non-decreasing and that log ψ(u) ≈ –I(u) in a slow Markov walk limit. Though the results and conditions are of large deviations type, the proofs are elementary and utilize piecewise comparisons with standard risk processes with a constant p. Also simulation via importance sampling using local exponential change of measure defined in terms of the γ(x) is discussed and some numerical results are presented.

This note gives a method of finding an upper bound for the mean of the maximum of n identically distributed non-negative random variables. The bound is explicitly given and numerically compared with the exact value of the mean of the maximum for some classical distributions (geometric, Poisson, Erlang, hyperexponential).

For modelling non-stationary spatial random fields Z = {Z(x) : x∊ℝn, n≥2} a recent method has been proposed to deform bijectively the index space so that the spatial dispersion D(x,y) = var[Z(x)-Z(y)], (x,y)∊ℝnxℝn, depends only on the Euclidean distance in the deformed space through an isotropic variogram γ. We prove uniqueness of this model in two different cases: (i) γ is strictly increasing; (ii) γ(u) is differentiable for u > 0.

Some properties of the number of up- and downcrossings over level u, in a special case of regenerative processes are discussed. Two basic relations between the density functions and the expected number of upcrossings of this process are derived. Using these reults, two examples of controlled M/G/1 queueing systems are solved. Simple relations are derived for the waiting time distribution conditioned on the phase of control encountered by an arriving customer. The Laplace-Stieltjes transform of the distribution function of the waiting time of an arbitrary customer is also derived for each of these two examples.

In this paper we derive the exact asymptotics of the probability of Parisian ruin for self-similar Gaussian risk processes. Additionally, we obtain the normal approximation of the Parisian ruin time and derive an asymptotic relation between the Parisian and the classical ruin times.

In a sequence of independent Bernoulli trials the probability for success in the kth trial is pk, k = 1, 2, …. The number of strings with a given number of failures between two subsequent successes is studied. Explicit expressions for distributions and moments are obtained for the case in which pk = a/(a + b + k − 1), a > 0, b ≥ 0. Also, the limit behaviour of the longest failure string in the first n trials is considered. For b = 0, the strings correspond to cycles in random permutations.

We consider a Lévy process with no negative jumps, reflected at a stochastic boundary that is a positive constant multiple of an age process associated with a Poisson process. We show that the stability condition for this process is identical to the one for the case of reflection at the origin. In particular, there exists a unique stationary distribution that is independent of initial conditions. We identify the Laplace-Stieltjes transform of the stationary distribution and observe that it satisfies a decomposition property. In fact, it is a sum of two independent random variables, one of which has the stationary distribution of the process reflected at the origin, and the other the stationary distribution of a certain clearing process. The latter is itself distributed as an infinite sum of independent random variables. Finally, we discuss the tail behavior of the stationary distribution and in particular observe that the second distribution in the decomposition always has a light tail.

Past work relating to the computation of time-dependent state probabilities in M/M/1 queueing systems is reviewed, with emphasis on methods that avoid Bessel functions. A new series formula of Sharma [13] is discussed and its connection with traditional Bessel function series is established. An alternative new series is developed which isolates the steady-state component for all values of traffic intensity and which turns out to be computationally superior. A brief comparison of our formula, Sharma's formula, and a classical Bessel function formula is given for the computation time of the probability that an initially empty system is empty at time t later.

The paper concerns the asymptotic distributions of cluster functionals of extreme events in a dth-order stationary Markov chain {Xn, n = 1,2,…} for which the joint distribution of (X1,…,Xd+1) is absolutely continuous. Under some distributional assumptions for {Xn}, we establish weak convergence for a class of cluster functionals and obtain representations for the asymptotic distributions which are well suited for simulation. A number of examples important in applications are presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the results.

If {Zn} is a Galton–Watson branching process with infinite mean, it is shown that under certain conditions there exist constants {cn} and a function L, slowly varying at 0, such that converges almost surely to a non-degenerate random variable, whose distribution function satisfies a certain functional equation. The method is then extended to a continuous-time Markov branching process {Zt} with infinite mean, where it is shown that there is always a function φ, slowly varying at 0, such that converges almost surely to a non-degenerate random variable, and a necessary and sufficient condition is given for this convergence to be equivalent to convergence of for some constant α > 0.

Lifetime distributions for multicomponent systems are developed through the interplay of ageing and stress shocks to the system. The ageing process is explicitly modeled by an exponential function with rate affected by the magnitude of stresses from a compound Poisson process shock model. Applications of these life distributions and associated failure rates towards the study of multicomponent system survival are discussed. In particular, we illustrate the behavior of these survival functions in relevant subsets of the parameter space.

We introduce open stochastic fluid networks that can be regarded as continuous analogues or fluid limits of open networks of infinite-server queues. Random exogenous input may come to any of the queues. At each queue, a c.d.f.-valued stochastic process governs the proportion of the input processed by a given time after arrival. The routeing may be deterministic (a specified sequence of successive queue visits) or proportional, i.e. a stochastic transition matrix may govern the proportion of the output routed from one queue to another. This stochastic fluid network with deterministic c.d.f.s governing processing at the queues arises as the limit of normalized networks of infinite-server queues with batch arrival processes where the batch sizes grow. In this limit, one can think of each particle having an evolution through the network, depending on its time and place of arrival, but otherwise independent of all other particles. A key property associated with this independence is the linearity: the workload associated with a superposition of inputs, each possibly having its own pattern of flow through the network, is simply the sum of the component workloads. As with infinite-server queueing models, the tractability makes the linear stochastic fluid network a natural candidate for approximations.

We consider an infinite-capacity buffer receiving fluid at a rate depending on the state of an M/M/1 queue. We obtain a new analytic expression for the joint stationary distribution of the buffer level and the state of the M/M/1 queue. This expression is obtained by the use of generating functions which are explicitly inverted. The case of a finite capacity fluid queue is also considered.

Viral DNA is studied by the technique of radioactive labelling and subsequent ultra centrifugation which separates it from reference DNA according to length or density. One hypothesis that frequently is of service is that the strands of DNA being studied are randomly cut along their lengths. Often the average number of cuts, λ, per unit length is either known by the nature of the experiment or is desired as a statistic. If radioactive phosphorous, P32, is used to label the DNA, e.g., 6 P32 atoms per unit length of 200,000 nucleotides (each of which is connected to its neighbor by two phosphorous-containing links) then within two weeks about 3 P32 atoms will have decayed and the DNA obtained, once separated into single stranded form (denatured), will form a predictable distribution of sizes. Of course 3 decays may be obtained more quickly by starting with more than 6 P32 atoms per unit length.
