1. The apparent cleanliness of the premises in which chicks are reared has little bearing on the growth rate of chicks within a given environment.

2. Bacterial counts of faeces from chicks reared under clean or extremely contaminated conditions showed no difference between the two sets of conditions.

3. Delaying feeding until 72 hr. after hatching retarded growth to at least 7 weeks of age. If the age of the chicks was calculated from the time at which the chicks were fed rather than the date of hatch, the weights of the chicks fed 72 hr. after hatching corresponded with those of the chicks fed immediately.

4. The contents of the duodenum and mesenteric intestine showed higher bacterial counts when feeding was delayed for 72 hr. than when feed was given shortly after hatching. This effect was no longer evident after the chicks were 1 week old.

5. Administration of penicillin in the water did not reduce the difference in growth rates between the chicks given feed immediately and those from which feed was withheld.

6. Antibiotics may decrease the thickness of the intestinal wall without stimulating growth.

1. A survey of the trade in fat cattle, calves and sheep through the collecting centres of the Ministry of Food has been made for the counties of Anglesey and Caernarvon.

2. The results show that the Anglesey stock are invariably heavier and in better condition and marketed slightly earlier in the year, than those of Caernarvon.

3. The imported fat cattle were heavier and more uniform than the home-bred.

4. A check has been made of the variations in live-weight of fat cattle according to colour. Invariably the Black cattle (Welsh) have been lighter, and the Red/White (Hereford) heavier than the average live weight of all cattle of both sexes.

5. The bulk of the meat produced in the two counties is delivered during the autumn months, confirming the experience that the winter fattening of cattle is not now widely practised.

6. In sheep husbandry the two counties are complementary. The small draft mountain ewe, crossed with a heavier type ram, is capable of rearing a fat lamb practically equal to her own body weight in less than 6 months.

7. Losses in mature ewes and rams are suspected to be high because of the small proportions of them, in relation to the population figures, that are delivered to the collecting centres.

The absorption and movement of 14C-labelled maleic hydrazide (2000 mg/1) and 2,4-D (250 mg/1) were studied in seedlings and mature plants of a local strain of onion (Allium cepa L.) from Kano, Nigeria, in the presence and absence of N (20 mg/1).

Plants absorbed and accumulated considerable amounts of both the chemicals. Addition of N to the treatment solution reduced the absorption of 2,4-D. Also, N reduced the mobility of the chemicals from the roots to the tops which resulted in accumulation of the chemicals in the bulbs.

It is now generally recognized that the glands of internal secretion play an important part in regulating metabolism and so controlling the nutrition of the animal. Hatui found that castration was followed by a putting on of fat except in those cases in which the pituitary underwent a compensatory hypertrophy, when the animal remained normal in weight.

The genetic parameters of lifetime production traits and their relationship with milk yield in first, second and third lactations were estimated from information on 753 Tharparkar cows. The heritability estimates for milk yield in first, second and third lactations were 0·22 ± 0·10, 0·33 ± 0·14 and 0·49 ± 0·17 and for number of lactations completed, lifetime milk production, number of days in milk and herd life 0·58 ± 0·23, 0·51 ± 0·22, 0·54 ± 0·22 and 0·34 ± 0·20 respectively. The genetic and phenotypic correlations among the four lifetime production traits were in the range of 0·83–1·0 and 0·84–0·85 respectively. The phenotypic correlations of milk yield in first, second and third lactations with lifetime production traits were significant and ranged between 0·15 and 0·56. The corresponding genetic correlations ranged between 0·26 and 0·83. For the first three lactations, the genetic correlations of lifetime traits with the third lactation were high and that between lifetime milk yield and yield in third lactation the highest (0·83 ± 0·17). The direct and correlated responses from single trait selection were also estimated.

Field experiments made for 4 years between 1976–7 and 1979–80 in a semi-arid environment of north-west India showed that the productivity of dryland unirrigated wheat can be increased considerably by adjusting the date of sowing to conducive atmospheric temperatures. Sowing in the middle of November when daily mean temperatures ranged between 19 and 21 °C produced yields ranging between 2·6and 3·5t/ha (averaged over the 4 years) compared with 1·4–3·3 t/ha obtained from the crop sown by mid-October when the daily mean temperature ranged between 24 and 26 °C. The tall cultivar C 306, a derivative of winter x spring wheat cross, could withstand sowing at higher temperatures (mid-October) more than the spring wheats. High temperatures prevailing during the seedling stage of spring wheats shortened their vegetative growth and initiated early differentiation. Night temperatures above 13 °C coupled with day temperatures of 33–35 °C in the last fortnight of October adversely affected the tillering of spring wheats sown on 15 October and produced smaller spikes with few fertile spikelets.

The birthcoat of coarse wool Barki lambs was investigated at the age of 1–1·5 months. Lambs were covered when they were 2 months old to study kemp succession, and some other adult fleece traits, at the age of 16 months in relation to the birthcoat fibre type arrays. Samples were taken from three dorsal and three lateral positions. The average halo hair grade was 5·45% and the coarse fibre type array, plateau, contributed 64·7% of the birthcoat arrays, the rest were of the less coarse, saddle, type. Halo hair grade and fibre type arrays showed an antero-posterior gradient, increasing in score and coarseness posteriorly.

All halo hairs, 41·9% of super sickles and 22·6% of hairy tip curly tip fibres were shed as first generation kemp (G1 Curly tip and histerotrich fibres shed the least and they contributed the majority of the total persistent fibres. When pre-curly tip fibres increased in the birthcoat samples, that was followed by more kemp in the adult fleece.

The average G1% kemp was 4·43. Kemp decreased in subsequent generations, values were 34·50 and 8·37 for G2/G1% and G1/%, respectively. G1%, and G2/G1% kemp showed a general trend of an increase towards posterior positions; the shoulder position was an exception to that.

Coarse birthcoat fibre type arrays, plateau, were followed by more kemp in G1% and in successive generations than were the less coarse, saddle, arrays. High values of G2/G1% kemp were followed by significantly high G3/G1% kemp. Within animals, there was a significant correlation (P < 0·01) between halo hair grade and G1% kemp.

Staple length showed a tendency to increase towards posterior positions and females showed slightly longer staples than those of males. A slight trend of decrease in staple length was observed following the less coarse array, saddle, as compared with that which followed the coarse array, plateau.

For selection against kemp at an early stage, though birthcoat halo hair grade was positively correlated with G1% kemp, a high halo hair grade is essential for the lamb's early survival, hence fibre type arrays should be considered in selection. Less coarse birthcoat arrays, saddle in the present material, and a high, within array, curly tip: pre-curly tip ratio would be preferrable.

An experiment was carried out to study the effect of early weaning on body weight and growth rate of Awassi lambs raised at Abu-Ghurib Experiment Station, Baghdad, Iraq. Sex, type of birth and weaning age significantly influenced the body weight and growth rate of lambs at all the ages studied. Dam's age and weight at lambing, however, did not affect the growth rate of the lambs. The average body weights of lambs at 4 and 6 months of age were 23·8±0·28 and 32·3 ± 0·36 kg. The average daily gain in weight up to 120 and 180 days of age was 162·3 ±2·57 and 153·7 ±1·94 g/day respectively. Males were heavier than females and singles were heavier than twins at all the ages. Lambs weaned at 60 days of age were heavier and had a faster growth rate than those weaned at 90 or 120 days of age. Males born to 2-year-old dams grew fastest while the females born to them had the lowest body weights and growth rate.

Six species and subspecies of rats and mice, Arvicanthis niloticus, Rattus norvegicus, R. rattus frugivorus, R. rattus alexandrinus, R. rattus rattus, and Mus musculus, were found associated with cotton, wheat, maize, sugar-cane, vegetables, fruit and berseem in the vicinity of Alexandria, Egypt. A. niloticus comprised 42·2% of all species collected. Maize, wheat, cotton and berseem were infested most. The lowest infestation was recorded in the fruit fields. Infestation in sugar-cane and vegetables was intermediate. R. norvegicus, M. musculus, R. rattus frugivorus, R. rattus alexandrinus and it. rattus rattusformed 23·9, 16·7, 10·4, 4·2 and 2·7% of the species collected respectively. Of the seven crops investigated, only two (cotton, wheat) were not infested with R. rattus rattus, but all were plagued with some species of rodents. The abundance of these rodents in fields seemed to be positively correlated with temperature and relative humidity. Winter represents a definite off-season for all species recorded.

Six species of fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis, Nosopsyllus fasciatus, Ctenocephalides felis felis, Leptopsylla segnis, Pulex irritans and Echidnophaga gallinacea), three of sucking lice (Polyplax abyssinica, P. spinulosa and Hoplopleura capitosa), five of parasitic mites (Ornithonyssus bacoti, Laelaps echidnina, L. keegani, Androlaelaps zulu and Haemolaelaps sp.) and the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus sanguineus were recovered from the rodents. Fleas (especially X. cheopis) and lice generally showed a certain degree of host specificity. A close relationship has been shown to exist between the abundance of fleas and lice and the abundance of some rodent hosts and climate. However, no definite host specificity or relation to climate was shown by infestation with mite species. Only B. sanguineus sanguinetie was recovered from S. rattus frugivorus during July, October and December; from R. rattus alexandrinus during November; and from R. rattus rattus during September. Its rate of infestation did not exceed one specimen per rodent host.

1. A survey of commercial crops of spring oats suggested tilth as a major factor affecting emergence.

2. In field experiments conducted on clay and sandy soils, the surface tilth was regarded as a population of aggregates characterized by size which was analysed by means of a five-point quadrat. A tilth index was calculated from the data thus obtained. Under the rough tilths on the clay soil emergence and tilth were directly related, but on the sandy soil there was an optimum degree of cultivation, the plots with the finest tilth had been over-cultivated and gave a low rate of emergence (Fig. 2).

3. A greenhouse pot experiment examined the effect of a cover above the seed of 21 tilths, of varying proportions of 0·03–0·25 in., 0·25–1·25 in., 1·25–2·25 in. diameter aggregates, the soil below the seed being uniform in all treatments. This confirmed that emergence rates were higher under fine surface tilths than under very rough tilths (Fig. 3). An increase in the proportion of 0·03–0·25 in. fraction increased emergence regularly whereas an increase in the proportion of the 1·25–2·25 in. fraction reduced emergence regularly. The presence of 0·25–1·25 in. aggregates reduced emergence compared with that where 0·03–0·25 in. only were present, but the effect of an increase in the proportion was not regular (Fig. 4).

4. A second greenhouse pot experiment compared the effect of 3 tilths above the seed and 2 irrigation treatments. The low emergence rate (58%) caused by a very rough tilth under restricted irrigation was raised to 86% by liberal irrigation.

5. From the evidence of both pot experiments it is postulated that a covering tilth above the seed of 25% or more by weight of fine soil (0·03–0·25 in.) and not more than 40% of coarse aggregates (1·25–2·25 in.) will permit a rate of emergence of at least 80%.

6. As the fine covering tilths in the pot experiment gave high rates of emergence as compared with rougher tilths, it is suggested that the low rate of emergence, on the sandy soil field experiments, was due to a lack of soil moisture induced by over-cultivation.

Variations in floral morphology have been observed by most breeders involved in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walpers) improvement. Usually, the most successful pod set is achieved following hand pollination when plants with large flowers are used as female parents because these are easy to manipulate. In breeding work involving wide crosses, unconscious selection of female parents on the basis of flower size could lead to correlated changes in pod and seed characteristics which may or may not be desirable. This would depend on the heritability of flower size and its correlation with the pod and seed characteristics.

One hundred and eighty triple test cross families arising from three barley crosses (C 164 x EB 1556, BG 25 x NP 21 and BH 15 x RD 103) were grown in two blocks of a randomized-block design in saline-alkali soil prepared in micro-plots. The families were evaluated for number of days from sowing to heading, plant height, number of tillers per plant, ear length, number of grains per ear, 100-grain weight and grain yield per plant. The cross BG 25 x NP 21 showed epistasis only for number of days toheading and number of grains per ear; in contrast, epistasis was present in all traits in BH 15 x RD 103. In cross C 164 x EB 1556, epistasis was detected for plant height, ear length and number of grains per ear. Thus, epistasis appears to be related to specific cross combination. The ‘j and l’ type epistasis was more pronounced than the ‘i’ type. Early generation selection may be used for number of days to heading which Exhibited epistasis marginally with preponderance of additive gene effects, while for the remaining traits selection should be deferred till an advanced generation.

Copper has been detected in a large number of plants, and is probably present in very minute amounts in all vegetation. Estimations of copper content of a number of plants have been made, notably by Fleurent and Levi(1), Maquenne and Demoussy(2) and McHargue(3).

Since sugar beet was first grown on farms it has been difficult to establish single seedlings at the required spacing because each seed unit was liable to produce a cluster of seedlings. Plant breeders have introduced varieties with monogerm seed and these were used between 1960 and 1962 to see if they led to any savings in labour with hand and machine thinning and to determine the yields of beet after these treatments. The trials described show that, after machine thinning, predetermined final plant populations with 90% of single seedlings were obtained and, when a herbicide was effective in weed control, the labour requirement was about 5% of that required to hand single a crop from multigerm seed. When singled by hand the monogerm varieties required 90 % of the labour needed to single a multigerm crop but the mean yield per acre of the monogerm varieties used was at least six tons per acre less than that from a commercial variety with multigerm seed.

In a former number of this Journal (1), there appeared a report on the mechanical analysis of soils by this sub-committee of the Agricultural Education Association. The report contained proposals for certain modifications of the earlier A.E.A. (1906) method, of which the most important were the introduction of hydrogen peroxide as a dispersive agent in the preliminary treatment, the use of the pipette method for the actual mechanical analysis, and the abolition of the fine gravel (3 mm.–1 mm.) fraction. This report was officially adopted by the A.E.A. and the method of mechanical analysis therein proposed was accepted as the new standard to replace the 1906 method. The full details were published in the Journal of the Association (2).

Coles (1957) has reported the results of a hatchability trial in which four pens of hens each received 10% of a different sample offish meal (A–D) in their diet as the only experimental variable. There was a high level of egg production in each pen, but differences in hatchability as indicated in Table 1. The pen with lowest hatchability received fish meal D, which was darker in colour than the others. It was suggested that this might indicate a scorching of the meal with heat damage, and that in turn this might be responsible for the lower hatchability. The meals have now been analysed to investigate this point.

The gross energy of forages can be classified into three fractions, namely the unavailable fraction, the digestible energy fraction and the potentially digestible energy (PDE) fraction. The PDE fraction can only be made available by appropriate treatment and supplementation (Pigden & Heaney, 1969). In young forages the PDE fraction is relatively insignificant, but as the plant matures, the PDE fraction increases very rapidly. By treating matured forages with delignifying agents, increased nutrient digestibilities have been demonstrated Chandra & Jackson, 1971; Wilson & Pigden, 1964), but no significant improvement on the voluntary intake was achieved unless the treated material was supplemented with a source of nitrogen (Donefer, Adeleye & Jones, 1969). While Zafren (1960) used ammonium hydroxide (NH40H) as the treatment alkali, with the claim that the ammonium acetate resulting from the neutralization of the excess alkali could serve as an extra source of nitrogen in the treated straw, other investigators (Donefer et al. 1969) have adopted the method of supplementing the treated straw with a source of nitrogen. Since the efficiency with which dietary nitrogen is converted to microbial nitrogen in the rumen has a considerable influence on the efficiency the animal as a whole, studies herein reported were carried out to test the effectiveness with which rumen micro-organisms utilize different nitrogen sources in degrading cellulose in vitro.

An erect, 60-day cultivar of cowpea, IT84S–2246, was grown with adequate soil moisture at two locations in Nigeria in 1990/91, Ibadan (7° N) and Kano (12° N), contrasting in total incident radiation (Q) and at plant population densities of 1·9–7·7 and 5·4–16·3 plants/m2, respectively. Leaf area, radiation interception and dry matter (DM) accumulation and partitioning were measured. Total shoot and seed dry weights were greater at Kano (mean 4·10 and 1·61 t/ha, respectively) than at Ibadan (mean 1·89 and 0·68 t/ha, respectively), and greater athigher plant densities. Relationships between the reciprocal of total shoot (Wt) and seed dry weight (Ws) per plant and plant population density (Np) determined at Kano and Ibadan were linear and parallel; intercepts, however, were significantly different (P < 0·005). The theoretical maximum potential Wt and Ws per unit area (i.e. 1/b) was therefore the same at Kano and at Ibadan, 448 and 170 g/m2, respectively. However, the optimum Np at Kano and Ibadan was markedly different, c. 10 and 40 plants/m2, respectively. These differences in the relations between DM yields and Np at Kano and Ibadan are examined in terms of leaf area, radiation interception and the partitioning coefficient, and the implications for the design of other agronomic investigations in cowpea are discussed.
