Non-breeding groups, I, II and III, each with six high-potassium (HK) and six lowpotassium(LK) Chokla ewes were given water once in 24, 48 and 72 h respectively. In the next summer, seven ewes (4 HK and 3 LK) from each group I, II and III were switched over to a watering schedule of once in 24, 72 and 96 h respectively and were naturally bred. All the animals were maintained on grazing alone.

Water deprivation for 72 h caused 18·8 and 19·2% body weight loss in HK and LKewes respectively; an overall average maintenance of weight loss in LK ewes was significantly higher than in HK ewes from the same group. There were significant differences in water intake due to treatments only. The HK and LK ewes from groups I and III showed a similar trend.

Pregnant ewes of HK and LK types given water once in 96 h lost 21·7 and 23·8% of their body weights respectively. Corresponding weight loss in aborted ewes were 23·8 and 33·3%. Two ewes, each from 3 LK and 4 HK animals aborted owing to water deprivation for 96 h. The water intake reached 30 and 36·5% of body weight in LK and HK pregnant ewes given water intermittently.

The wool attributes of non-pregnant ewes did not indicate a significant influence of blood potassium types. Four out of five ewes of the LK phenotype died during 3 years, irrespective of watering schedule.

Water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) are reared in many tropical and subtropical countries for meat and milk production and to serve as draught animals. The improvement of milk yield in water buffaloes has been handicapped by the absence of physiological data that may provide means of rapid genetic improvement. Endocrine function is known to vary with lactation intensity. Thyroid hormones seem to have a stimulatory effect on the metabolic rate and, consequently, on the productivity of dairy animals (Lenon & Mixner, 1957; Picha, Pichova & Karasek, 1970; Swanson, 1972). Anderson (1969) also reported an increase in thyroid activity in lactating cows and rats, although other investigators (Johnson & Vanjonack, 1976; Hart et al. 1978; Hart, Bines & Morant, 1979) reported that lactation induced a decline in plasma thyroid hormones. None of these studies performed measurement of plasma thyroid stimulating hormone.

Seven non-pregnant Murrah buffalo heifers aged 20–34 months and weighing 170–260 kg were used in a 7 × 4 incomplete latin square design to study the effect of feeding mixed diets on voluntary intake over a period of 84 days. Voluntary intake and rate of passage were determined during the last 10 days and digestibility of feed nutrients during the last 6 days of each 21-day experimental period.

Maize stover, dry grass and wheat straw were fed ad libitum mixed with either a fixed quantity of berseem hay (MH, GH and WH rations, respectively) or concentrates (MC, GC and WC rations, respectively) to total co. 0·80% of body weight (BW). Berseem hay fed free choice mixed with limited (0·70% BW) concentrates (HC ration) comprised another treatment. The mean daily total dry-matter intake (DMI g/kgW0·75) and total digestible nutrient intake (given in parenthesis) by animals were 62·2 (1·94), 72·2 (2·20), 74·3 (2·30), 75·2 (2·94), 79·5 (2·59), 85·9 (2·78) and 88·5 (2·98), respectively on MH, GH, WH, HC, MC, WC and GC rations. The digestible crude protein intake on the HC ration was higher than on the remaining six rations. Feeding a fixed quantity of either berseem hay or concentrates resulted in lower consumption of basal roughages suggesting that the physical capacity of the gut limited intake.

Dry-matter digestibility (%) and mean retention time (h), given in parenthesis, were 57·6 (69·4), 56·3 (64·6), 56·7 (67·5), 72·2 (79·9), 59·2 (620), 59·4 (620) and 58·9 (66·0), respectively on MH, GH, WH, HC, MC, GC and WC rations. The digestibilities of D.M. and proximate principles, except crude fibre (CF), of the HC ration were higher than those of the remaining six mixed diets. Concentrate feeding tended to hasten the movement of digesta of the roughage portion of the mixed diet through the digestive tract. The longest mean retention and rumen retention times were associated with the highest digestibilities. The wheat straw-berseem hay mixed diet was as good as dry grass or maize stover-berseem hay mixed diets with regard to its nutrient intake and weight gain by the heifers.

An erect, 60-day cultivar of cowpea, IT84S–2246, was grown with adequate soil moisture at two locations in Nigeria in 1990/91, Ibadan (7° N) and Kano (12° N), contrasting in total incident radiation (Q) and at plant population densities of 1·9–7·7 and 5·4–16·3 plants/m2, respectively. Leaf area, radiation interception and dry matter (DM) accumulation and partitioning were measured. Total shoot and seed dry weights were greater at Kano (mean 4·10 and 1·61 t/ha, respectively) than at Ibadan (mean 1·89 and 0·68 t/ha, respectively), and greater athigher plant densities. Relationships between the reciprocal of total shoot (Wt) and seed dry weight (Ws) per plant and plant population density (Np) determined at Kano and Ibadan were linear and parallel; intercepts, however, were significantly different (P < 0·005). The theoretical maximum potential Wt and Ws per unit area (i.e. 1/b) was therefore the same at Kano and at Ibadan, 448 and 170 g/m2, respectively. However, the optimum Np at Kano and Ibadan was markedly different, c. 10 and 40 plants/m2, respectively. These differences in the relations between DM yields and Np at Kano and Ibadan are examined in terms of leaf area, radiation interception and the partitioning coefficient, and the implications for the design of other agronomic investigations in cowpea are discussed.

Gill in 1871 first pointed out that when an excess of basic lead acetate is added to a solution of invert sugar the negative rotation of the latter is greatly reduced owing to the formation of a soluble lead compound of laevulose. If sufficient lead solution is added the negative rotation may become a positive one; thus in one experiment quoted by Gill a negative reading of – 28° was transformed into a positive value of + 57°. The change of rotation was not, however, permanent and on removing the lead or on acidifying the solution the original rotatory power was restored. The change of rotation was attributed to an effect of the lead on the laevulose only; a solution of dextrose was practically unaffected by the presence of basic lead acetate. Since Gill's paper the effect of basic lead acetate as a source of error in sugar analysis has been the subject of numerous papers especially by Pellet, Svoboda, Edson, Prinsen Geerligs, Watts and Tempany and Eynon.

Two experiments were conducted to study the influence of heat treatment of Vicia faba beans on the productive performance of laying hens fed diets containing large proportions of the beans. In the first experiment, the effects of extruding and pelleting the beans were studied while in the second experiment the effects of autoclaving at 121 °C for 30 min the cotyledons and hulls of the beans were evaluated. Hyline-W36 layers were used in the first experiment while two strains (Shaver-288 and Dekalb) of birds were used in the second experiment. Each experiment lasted 5 months during which data on egg production, egg weight, feed intake, mortality and body-weight gain of birds were collected. The results obtained indicated that heat treatment (extruding, pelleting and autoclaving) of the beans, cotyledons and hulls had no beneficial effect on the productive performance of laying hens fed on diets containing large proportions of the heated beans, cotyledons and hulls. Egg-size reducing factors appeared to be concentrated in the cotyledons rather than the hulls of the beans.

The analysis of plant competition experiments in which all possible pairs of p genotypes are grown in replacement series is discussed. Two methods of analyses, using models of de Wit (1960) and Gleeson & McGilchrist (1980), are compared. The two approaches, which are shown to be linked algebraically, complement each other in terms of agronomic interpretation.

During the investigation in connection with maize digestibility recorded in the current issue of this journal (1), a period of feeding was carried out in which the two pigs received a ration consisting of unsoaked crushed maize and whole milk. Although it was found necessary to discontinue the main maize trial along these lines, the results of this isolated period are not without interest, since they enable conclusions to be drawn concerning the extent of the digestion and assimilation of the constituents of milk when fed to swine.

The crushed maize used in this period was from the same stock as that fed in the mixed maize and middlings periods. The daily ration consisted of 2000 gm. crushed maize together with one quart of whole milk; it was given in two equal portions during the day, the milk and a little water being mixed with the dry maize in the trough at the time of feeding. The presence of the milk appeared to make the ration attractive to the animals, since ready and complete consumption was obtained.

In an earlier paper (Little, McLean & Winter, 1977) we reported a technique for the measurement of the phosphorus content of the diet consumed bygrazing cattle, which recently has been used successfully to measure the dietary intake of phosphorus by sheep grazing Mitchell grass (Astrebla spp.) pastures in western Queensland (Beale & McMeniman, 1978). In this technique, phosphorus of salivary origin is distinguished from that of plant origin in samples extruded by oesophageally nstulated animals by prior labelling of salivary phosphorus with the isotope 32P following the intravenous infusion of Na2H32PO4. The difference in specific activity between saliva and extruded bolus is used as the basis of the calculation of the phosphorus content of consumed herbage. Oesophageally nstulated animals may graze experimental pastures for an hour or more while samples are collected from them. It is important to have an accurate measure of saliva speoific activity, representative of that secreted during the grazing period; therefore, application of the technique is facilitated if the rate of change in saliva specific activity during collection periods is slow and linear.

The growth of 120 Friesian heifers born into one herd over a period of 12 years was studied for the period from 6 months of age to calving at about 30–35 months of age. Live weights were recorded weekly and rates of live-weight gain were calculated for each 3-month period for each animal. Δt 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age the heifers weighed 360, 590, 800 and 950 lb. The coefficients of variation of live weight did not vary with age and averaged ±10·0%. Coefficients of variation of live-weight gain increased from ± 20% at 6–9 months of age to ±60% at 24–27 months of age. Growth rate declined by 0·02 lb/day from 12 months to 30 months of age for animals under constant managerial conditions. Heifers wintered indoors grew faster than those wintered outdoors. The growth of younger animals was decreased more by outdoor wintering (a reduction of 0·6 lb/day at 15 months) than was the growth rate of older animals (a reduction of 0·3 lb/day at 21 months of age). When live-weight gain was low in winter there was marked compensatory growth at grass the following summer. Pregnant heifers grew 0·1 lb/day faster in early pregnancy and 0·6 lb/day faster in the last 4 months of pregnancy than did barren heifers.

There was no appreciable difference between the live-weight gain of spring- and autumn-born heifers. With an autumn calving policy spring-born heifers were served and conceived 135 days earlier and weighed 106 lb less at calving than did autumn-born heifers. There was little difference in the milk yield of the two groups in 305 days of the first lactation.

The regression equation of live weight (lb) on age (months) to 3rd calving was W = 1449 – 2027 e-0·042t. It was concluded that in the interests of economic rearing the dairy farmer could with advantage exercise greater control of the relationship between nutrition and growth during high cost winter periods and low cost summer periods.

Cassia acutifolia Del., known in the Sudan as ‘Senna Makka’ and in commerce as ‘Alexandrian Senna’ (Tothill, 1948), is indigenous to the Sudan and grows wild in the Northern and Central Provinces. It is used locally as a laxative and itsactive ingredient senoside is extracted for pharmaceutical purposes in England, U.S.A. and Germany. The Sudan has been exporting pods and leaves of Senna for many years and the crop has been steadily growing in economic importance. The exported produce is obtained from wild or cultivated Senna plants. Recently a breeding programme has been initiated to provide improved varieties that can both meet the growers’ need for high yield and satisfy the market's demand for uniform high quality produce. Before a proper plant breeding programme can be established, the mode of reproduction must be known since crop breeding procedures are largely determined by the reproductive system. This paper reports on studies made to determine the breeding system in Alexandrian Senna.

The oil content of a number of introduced and local varieties was determined using three nuclear magnetic resonance oil analysers at different centres and compared with results from conventional solvent extraction. Differences were evident between the three centres and between the techniques but in both cases the rankings were similar.

A number of herbicide treatments involving the use of trifluralin, preforan and igran were compared together with hand weeding as methods for the control of weeds in a cultivar of Phaseolus vulgaris sown on 19 January 1972.

Favourable increases in yield of beans were obtained by combinations of preforan and igran which were associated with an increase in the number of pods produced per plant. Hand weeding failed to give a significant increase in final yield.

Within 14 days from sowing there was an appreciable weed cover in the control and hand-weeded plots but little evidence of weeds in the herbicide-treated plots. At 41 days there were still no significant differences between the control and the plots to be hand weeded. There was, however, a considerable reduction in percentage cover of weeds on the herbicide treated plots. Trifluralin and preforan were equally effective in reducing weed cover.

Attempts were made to relate various parameters of growth in wheat substitution lines to final yield of grain and assess the extent to which such relationships could be useful as early predictors of yield. The associations were measured by calculating correlation coefficients, partial regression coefficients, standard partial regression coefficients and independent contribution to yield. Significant correlation coefficients were common but significant partial regression coefficients were rare. The remaining estimates provided a ranked order of characters associated with yield. Those parameters of vegetative growth showing most association with final yield were themselves related fairly directly to ear and grain size. It was concluded that direct estimates of yield must remain the most appropriate character on which to base selection in cereals.

Nitric phosphates containing 80, 50 and 30% water-soluble phosphorus, and Mussoorie rock phosphate, alone or with Amjhore pyrites, farmyard manure or straw, were compared relative to concentrated superphosphate for each of three cycles of a clusterbean–wheat and a groundnut–wheat rotation. Both the field experiments were made on alkaline P-deficient Samana sands. All phosphatic fertilizers were applied to each crop at the rate of 10, 20 and 30 kg P/ha. Dry forage of clusterbean, groundnut pods and grain yield of wheat were measured. The model of concurrent straight line response was employed to calculate availability coefficient ratios which express the relative effectiveness of the different phosphatic fertilizers.

Nitric phosphate containing 80 % water-soluble phosphorus and concentrated superphosphate were almost equal in their effectiveness in both 3-year rotational studies of clusterbean–wheat and groundnut–wheat. The relative efficiency of the nitric phosphates increased with the amount of water-soluble phosphorus they contained. Mussoorie rock phosphate was the least effective source of fertilizer phosphorus, although its efficiency is considerably higher for the legume clusterbean and for groundnut than for the cereal wheat. The efficiency of Mussoorie rock phosphate increased when it was mixed with the soil together with Amjhore pyrites, farmyard manure and straw respectively. These materials were more effective for clusterbean and groundnut than for wheat.

S1 maize varieties and varietal hybrids were tested in six locations ranging in altitude from 236 to 1600 m in Cameroon. The grain yields of highland varieties were observed to increase with each increase in altitude while the yields of the lowland varieties decreased with increasing altitude.

The highland × lowland S1 varietal crosses yielded the same as the lowland parental varieties in highland areas and better than highland parental varieties in lowland areas.

Average yields of all varieties per location increased by about 1·1 t/km increase in altitude. Eberhart & Russell's (1966) stability method found no stable variety while Francis & Kannenberg's (1978) genotype-grouping technique found five highland × lowland crosses to be relatively stable.

Number of days from planting to tasselling increased with increasing altitude by about 20 days/km increase in altitude. Highland and lowland varieties performed poorly outside their zones of adaptation because of high incidence of foliar diseases like leaf blights and rusts.

In the breeding of animals like cattle which reproduce slowly relative to the working life of a breeder, time is a factor of major importance. A study has therefore been made of the duration of samples of pedigree herds in order to obtain some indication of the time actually spent by breeders in the selective breeding of dairy cattle.

The samples consisted of pedigree Ayrshire, Jersey and Shorthorn herds, (a) established at various fixed times in the past; and (b) existing in 1939. The former were traced forwards, and the latter backwards, by means of herdbook registrations. Each sample contained not less than 300 herds, and the distribution of durations in each was considered in relation to the movement of population numbers in the whole breeds from which they were drawn.

Short-duration pigeonpea can give up to three harvests in environments with mild winters (e.g. minimum temperature above 10 °C) such as those prevailing in peninsular India (Sharma, Saxena & Green. 1978; Chauhan, Venkataratnam & Sheldrake, 1984). This is mainly due to the short time (about 120 days) taken to produce the first flush, and the strong perennial character of pigeonpea. The seed yield of short-duration pigeonpea in this multiple-harvest system may reach 5·2 t/ha (Chauhan et al. 1984).

A field experiment was carried out on soyabean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) to measure the effect of planting date (soil temperature) on seedling emergence. Seeds were sown at weekly intervals on seven planting dates from April until the end of May in SE England in 1997. Planting date had no significant effect on final percentage emergence but had a highly significant effect on time to emergence. The coefficients of variation (c.v.) for the number of days to emergence (calendar days) were high (43–45%), and therefore not a reliable method for predicting emergence. Three accumulated heat unit (AHU) methods based on air and soil temperatures were compared with the calendar day method to determine the most reliable system for predicting seedling emergence. Accumulated soil temperatures above a base of 9·0 °C had the lowest c.v.s (8–15%) and were shown to be the most reliable predictor of emergence.

Nitrification potential of a tropical vertisol saturated with water was estimated during sequential reduction of nitrate (NO3−), ferric iron (Fe3+), sulphate (SO42−) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in terminal electron-accepting processes (TEAPs). In general, the TEAPs enhanced potential nitrification rate (PNR) of the soil. Nitrification was highest at Fe3+ reduction followed by SO42− reduction, NO3− reduction and lowest in unreduced control soil. Predicted PNR correlated significantly with the observed PNR. Electron donor Fe2+ stimulated PNR, while S2− inhibited it significantly. Terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism targeting the amoA gene of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) highlighted population dynamics during the sequential reduction of terminal electron acceptors. Only the relative abundance of AOA varied significantly during the course of soil reduction. Relative abundance of AOB correlated with NO3− and Fe2+. Linear regression models predicted PNR from the values of NO3−, Fe2+ and relative abundance of AOA. Principal component analysis of PNR during different reducing conditions explained 72.90% variance by PC1 and 19.52% variance by PC2. Results revealed that AOA might have a significant role in nitrification during reducing conditions in the tropical flooded ecosystem of a vertisol.
