The activities of mankind which introduce excess nutrients and/or pollutants of various kinds into lakes, streams, estuaries, soils and the air, can, and often do, cause significant changes in aquatic and terrestrial environments world-wide. The pollution problem is critical because of the pressures of increasing populations, industrial growth and intensification of agricultural production. Conflicts of interest arise everywhere as challenges to resource use and natural state (‘beauty’) are turned into public issues.

Insect pests are major yield reducers in sorghum under traditional farming practices in Africa. The use of resistant varieties in an integrated pest management scheme provides the most cost effective and practical means of sorghum insect control. Corneous grain sorghums are more weevil resistant than their softer endosperm counterparts. A wide range of sources of resistance to shootfiy, stem-borer and greenbug are known. Breeding for resistance to sorghum insects has been practised with varying degrees of success. Greenbug resistance breeding in sorghum has been successful in the U.S.A. Stem-borers are perhaps the most serious group of sorghum insects in Eastern Africa and further efforts are needed in breeding for resistance to these pests. In an effective pest resistance breeding work, the breeder and the entomologist must work as a team to make the fastest possible progress. Where several pests are of concern in an area, genotypes with multiple resistance in good agronomic backgrounds are needed.

Available pieces of information on Cicadulina sp. leafhopper biology, with specific references to the suitability of various species for mass rearing and resistance screening for maize streak virus (MSV) are critically reviewed. The following are summarized: (a) effect of distribution pattern and species composition on the efficiency of collection of live specimens for establishing a colony for mass rearing; (b) species biology and fecundity as affected by temperature and humidity; (c) species specificity in MSV transmission; (d) host plant preference and adaptation to mass rearing conditions. All these parameters affect the suitability of various Cicadulina species used as vectors in maize resistance screening and breeding to MSV disease.

Full-grown pupae Agrotis ipsilon were irradiated with 5 or 10 krad and crossed with unirradiated female. The F1 progeny were more sterile than parents. Percentage of mated female of F1 was greatly reduced while the mating frequency was increased. Less inseminated females were among the F1, particularly when the female inherited the sterility. The mortality among larvae of the F1 was high and dose-dependent, and that among F2 larvae was even higher. The sex ratio of the F1 progeny was altered in favour of male, while that of the F2 was normal. 10 krad for P1 male was sufficient to inhibit hatching of the eggs produced by F1 adults.

A laboratory study of the biology of Corcyra cephalonica (Staint.) was made at 30°C and 70% r.h. on sorghum. The number of eggs laid per female, oviposition period, development time and survival from egg to adult were determined. The data were used to estimate the finite rate of increase and the intrinsic rate of natural increase of the moth. For the finite rate of increase (λ) the estimated value was 18 per lunar month, corresponding to an intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) of 2.9. The results are compared with published data and it is concluded that the pest potential of C. cephalonica has been, hitherto, underestimated.

The effects of various exposure to irradiation from cesium 137 in nitrogen and air on survival and fecundity of Glossina palpalis palpalis were compared. With doses from 3 to 21 krad in nitrogen atmosphere, male fertility was inversely correlated with dose, above 15 krad male survival was inversely correlated with dose. All males subjected to either 21 krad in nitrogen or 15 krad in air were sterilized. Females appeared to be more sensitive to gamma-irradiation than males; a dose of 6 krad in nitrogen resulted in 100% sterility and arrested further development of the ovaries after the ovulation of follicles A1 and C1. In males, this dose caused 70.3% sterility. Approximately 97 and 98% sterility were obtained when males were treated with 15 krad in nitrogen and 12 krad in air respectively. No fly emerged from irradiated puparia younger than 15 days. Irradiation of 15 or 20 days old puparia killed the insect either before or shortly after eclosion, whereas the normal patterns of emergence, survival and reproduction were observed from puparia that were irradiated when 25 days old or older.

A survey to establish the distribution of tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) in southern Sudan was conducted using biconical traps. Only Glossina fuscipes fuscipes was caught. The results obtained revealed a further northern advance of G. f. fuscipes of c. 29 km along River Bahr el Jebel and 48 km along River Luri, and a southern contraction of Glossina morsitans submorsitans belt from Lewis' distribution limit. Glossina f. fuscipes was encountered in gallery forest along water courses with no significant differences in sex ratios and proportions of tenerals and non-tenerals between trap catches (P>0.1). Flies were absent from villages and open savanna woodland forests away from water courses. Trap catches were significantly higher during wet than dry season (t = 2.681; P < 0.025), although flies could be caught in any one location during both seasons. These results are discussed in relation to the current epidemic of human African trypanosomosis (HAT) in southern Sudan.

The assumption was made that for a complete understanding of the feeding behaviour and nutrition of Atherigona soccata larvae on various cultivars of sorghum, it was necessary to investigate the relationship between plant chemicals occurring in resistant sorghum plants and the digestive enzymes of larvae. However, at least an introduction to the anatomical organization of the alimentary canal of larvae is needed to understand the digestion and absorption of food taken from resistant and susceptible sorghum lines.

The present preliminary investigation was undertaken to determine qualitatively some of the enzymes present in the gut and salivary glands of the third instar by locating enzymes histochemically on polyacrylamide gels.

The virus Rhabdionvirus oryctes Huger was tried against the root and stem borer of the cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) in Sri Lanka by pouring a virus suspension into the galleries, releasing virus-infected adults and placing virus-mixed sawdust at the base of the infested stem. Results obtained after several surveys showed that the sawdust technique gave more positive results. The establishment and infection of the virus in the beetle population accounted for a reduction in the beetle damage to the tree in certain pockets of the cashew plantation.

Investigations were carried out on the seasonal population fluctuations of the moth Cydia ptychora. The population increased from May to September and declined from November to April. Increasing temperatures and decreasing r.h. appeared to be associated with population decline, while the reverse seemed to favour population increase.

From light trap catches, sex ratios of adults showed considerable variation from month to month. The overall ratio was 2:1, in favour of the males, but there was a tendency for adjustment towards an apparently female-biased ratio from March to August.

Bracon (?) hancocki was found to be a major parasite. Other biotic factors contributing to population regulation included 13 hymenopterous parasites and three predators (Philodicus temerarius, Bactria sp. nr. guineensis and Chrysopa sp.)

Fluoride accumulation and the relative fluoride loading of different body parts in the wild mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mandarina M.), mulberry geometrid (Pathonandria atrineata B.) and mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) near fluoride pollution sources in the main sericultural region of China were studied. The results showed that the insects had an increased fluoride accumulation if compared to their feed, and that there were wide differences between the different insect species with the same feed and within the same polluted site. The digestive tract of the insect retained much higher fluoride content than other body parts. Moreover, a highly significant correlation was found between fluoride content in the studied insects and that of the mulberry leaves on which they were collected. Of the three insects studied, the mulberry geometrid appears to be most adapted to environmental fluoride, while the domestic silkworm is the least able to tolerate high fluoride levels, experiencing high mortalities at 94.3 mg/kg.

Mulberry (Morus spp.) was found to be the most sensitive plant to air-borne fluoride pollution among six plants studied in polluted areas, and could be a useful bioindicator to monitor environmental pollution. The highest fluoride content was found in the oldest leaves, and in plants growing closest to and downwind from the pollution source.

Chilo species are the most important stem borers of sugar-cane. They cause heavy losses to sugar-cane crop and continue to suppress yield in the sugar industry. The control of these borer species through insecticides has been difficult as the damaging larvae spend most of their life-cycle within the cane plant. The breeding of borer resistant varieties is an ideal approach for controlling the damage as it does not cost the grower anything extra, is effective at all levels of pest infestation and its effects are cumulative and long lasting in reducing the pest population. Many plant characters such as leaf surface, rind hardness, leaf sheath tightness, fibre content, stalk pith and diameter and plant vigour have been associated with borer resistance. In sugar-cane breeding, the inclusion of borer resistance characters, in addition to many other agronomic characters required of a commercial variety, is rather difficult due to the segregating nature of this plant. Therefore, it is better to use, as parent varieties the few varieties showing marked resistance without knowing the actual reasons of resistance. The joint efforts of sugar-cane breeders and entomologists in production and selection of a large number of seedlings for desired characters can help to solve this problem to a greater extent.

Experiments carried out in a coffee plantation to determine the developmental period of Icerya paltersoni (Newst.) showed that the female and male scales lasted 157 and 129 days on average, respectively. The different stages of I. pattersoni females were found to be recognizable by the number of antennal segments. The antenna of the stage I nymphal instar is six segmented, stage II is nine segmented and stage III is eleven segmented. The antenna of adult males is eighteen segmented. Females are neotenic but the males possess a pair of grey wings and atrophied mouthparts. In the field the I. pattersoni pest population size is highest in the heavy rainfall months of April and May.

Studies on developmental biology and feeding and ovipositional preferences of the pea leaf miner, Chromatomyia horticola (Goureau), were carried out on 11 varieties of field peas, Pisum sativum L. Two varieties, P-200 and P-402, offered maximum resistance to the development of pea leaf miner by inhibiting growth as both larval and puparial development were prolonged, and adult longevity, survival and fecundity reduced. These varieties were also least preferred for feeding and oviposition. Differences between the moderately resistant HFP-4 and highly susceptible varieties HFP-5, HFP-6, HFP-12, PG-3, RAU-21, RAU-25, RAU-37and T-163 were not well marked, as most of these had a relatively high value for the developmental success index, based on indices for larval-puparial development, adult longevity, survival and fecundity, and were also highly preferred by the ovipositing females. Variety PG-3, though offering some resistance to development, was highly preferred for oviposition. The local variety T-163, was the most susceptible variety, as it had the maximum value for the developmental success index, and was highly preferred by ovipositing females. The physiological basis of resistance in the two pea varieties is suggested to be mainly non-preference and antibiosis.

Animals were trapped in Marigat, Baringo District to investigate animal reservoirs of visceral leishmaniasis in an endemic focus of the disease. Several species of rodents, carnivores and reptiles were captured. Specimens of spleen, liver and blood tissues were taken from the animals. The specimens were triturated into sterile saline and then cultured into NNN medium, and some of it injected into hamsters intraperitoneally. Skin biopsies were also taken and cultured in NNN medium. Slide smears of all the tissues taken were made stained with Giemsa stain and examined under the microscope for amastigotes. Four isolates of leishmanial parasites were made from a gerbil and three monitor lizards.

The effect of four biologically active and naturally occurring plant quinones, namely maesanin, maesaquinone, embelin and juglone on the respiration of mitochondria isolated from Glossina morsitans morsitans, Schistoscerca gregaria and Periplaneta americana was investigated. The rate of oxygen consumption by the mitochondria was measured using an oxygen electrode. Maesanin inhibited the mitochondrial electron transport chain at a level before cytochrome C whereas maesaquinone and embelin uncoupled the mitochondria. Juglone inhibited respiration in G. m. morsitans mitochondria and uncoupled those of S. gregaria and P. americana.

Transgenic plants expressing Bacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxins are now being used commercially in several crop species. These toxins have demonstrated good control of temperate (Ostrinia nubilalis) and tropical (Diatraea grandiosella and D. saccharalis) stemborers in maize. Resistance to B. thuringiensis toxins has been reported in over 11 species in both field and laboratory studies, demonstrating the need for resistance management strategies to prolong the efficacy of this valuable pest management tool within an integrated control programme. Resistance involves reduced binding of toxins to midgut epithelial cells and is generally considered to be a recessive trait. Resistance management will require the use of spatial and temporal refugia which may require unique schemes for each pest complex. Information is presented on the mode of action of cry toxins, resistance mechanisms, interaction of transgenic plants and biocontrol agents, and management/deployment strategies for transgenic maize in tropical ecologies.

A questionnaire survey was conducted to find out the information and knowledge of extension workers on thresholds of cotton bollworms, (Helicoverpa armigera and Diparopsis castanea). A sample of 30 extension officers was interviewed in Southern and Central provinces of Zambia. The results showed crucial deficiencies in extension worker's knowledge on thresholds of key pests and their implementation in cotton IPM. More than 60% extension officers were not aware of the basic information and knowledge such as thresholds of cotton bollworms, the recommended time to start scouting (weeks after germination of cotton) and the number of cotton plants to be examined for pest observance in each field. All extension officers indicated a desperate need for more field oriented practical training on thresholds. The recent increase in the incidence of aphids, Aphis gossypii as reported by 50% extension workers is obviously due to calendar sprays of synthetic pyrethroids and the lack of a suitable aphicide in current spray programme. Demonstrations on the practical aspects of thresholds deserve much more attention at college level and also during the in-service training. More co-operation in cotton IPM training for extension officers within Central and Southern Africa is suggested.

A headcage technique to screen for resistance to sorghum head bug, Eurystylus immaculatus Odh. (Hemiptera: Miridae) was standardized for use in West Africa. Panicles infested at the half-anthesis to complete-anthesis stage had greater population build-up and suffered maximum grain damage, loss in grain mass, grain hardness and seed germination. Panicles with higher grain damage also showed greater severity of grain mould incidence. Maximum population build-up and grain damage was recorded in panicles infested with 20 pairs of adults. Panicles infested with 30–40 pairs of bugs generally showed a decrease in population build-up, possibly because of crowding. Head bug numbers decreased with a decrease in panicle size, while the extent of grain damage increased. To screen for resistance to head bugs, data should be recorded both on head bug numbers and grain damage. Fifty nymphs (third to fourth instar) or 40 bugs collected at random can also be used in the headcage to screen for resistance to head bugs.

Four cultivars of maize, Zea mays L. viz., CM 600, Basilocal, CM 500 and Kisan were examined for their relative resistance to the maize stem borer, chilo partellus (Swinhoe) in relation to nutrition. Freshly hatched larvae of C. partellus were allowed to grow on the leaf whorls of the cultivars in the laboratory at 27 ±.2°C and 70–90% r.h. The rate of growth, food consumption and its utilization, egg laying and egg hatchability were studied. The insects showed better growth when fed CM 600 or Basilocal maize; this was shown by a higher percentage pupation (56.8 and 54.8, respectively on CM 600 and Basilocal) as compared to (24.4 and 5.6 respectively) on CM 500 and Kisan. Pupal weights were higher (40.2, 45.2, 34.4 and 32.8 mg for male pupae and 57.6, 63.7, 51.8 and 35.8 mg for female pupae), when larvae were reared on CM 600, Basilocal, CM 500 and Kisan, respectively. The growth index decreased from 1.65 on CM 600 and 1.49 on Basilocal to 0.40 on CM 500 and 0.09 on Kisan. A better consumption and utilization of the cultivars CM 600 and Basilocal was shown as also expressed by the higher weights attained by larvae grown on these two than on CM 500 and Kisan. Growth rate slowed down to 0.068 on CM 500 from 0.161 on CM 600 maize. A similar trend was observed in egg-laying and hatchability of eggs. Number of eggs laid per female decreased from 290 on CM 600 reared C. partellus to 157 on Kisan reared insects and none of the eggs laid by the latter could hatch. The degree of resistance of the cultivars to C. partellus on the basis of nutritional factors in a decreasing order is: Kisan > CM 500 > Basilocal > CM 600.
