Four cultivars of maize, Zea mays L. viz., CM 600, Basilocal, CM 500 and Kisan were examined for their relative resistance to the maize stem borer, chilo partellus (Swinhoe) in relation to nutrition. Freshly hatched larvae of C. partellus were allowed to grow on the leaf whorls of the cultivars in the laboratory at 27 ±.2°C and 70–90% r.h. The rate of growth, food consumption and its utilization, egg laying and egg hatchability were studied. The insects showed better growth when fed CM 600 or Basilocal maize; this was shown by a higher percentage pupation (56.8 and 54.8, respectively on CM 600 and Basilocal) as compared to (24.4 and 5.6 respectively) on CM 500 and Kisan. Pupal weights were higher (40.2, 45.2, 34.4 and 32.8 mg for male pupae and 57.6, 63.7, 51.8 and 35.8 mg for female pupae), when larvae were reared on CM 600, Basilocal, CM 500 and Kisan, respectively. The growth index decreased from 1.65 on CM 600 and 1.49 on Basilocal to 0.40 on CM 500 and 0.09 on Kisan. A better consumption and utilization of the cultivars CM 600 and Basilocal was shown as also expressed by the higher weights attained by larvae grown on these two than on CM 500 and Kisan. Growth rate slowed down to 0.068 on CM 500 from 0.161 on CM 600 maize. A similar trend was observed in egg-laying and hatchability of eggs. Number of eggs laid per female decreased from 290 on CM 600 reared C. partellus to 157 on Kisan reared insects and none of the eggs laid by the latter could hatch. The degree of resistance of the cultivars to C. partellus on the basis of nutritional factors in a decreasing order is: Kisan > CM 500 > Basilocal > CM 600.

Animals were trapped in Marigat, Baringo District to investigate animal reservoirs of visceral leishmaniasis in an endemic focus of the disease. Several species of rodents, carnivores and reptiles were captured. Specimens of spleen, liver and blood tissues were taken from the animals. The specimens were triturated into sterile saline and then cultured into NNN medium, and some of it injected into hamsters intraperitoneally. Skin biopsies were also taken and cultured in NNN medium. Slide smears of all the tissues taken were made stained with Giemsa stain and examined under the microscope for amastigotes. Four isolates of leishmanial parasites were made from a gerbil and three monitor lizards.

A questionnaire survey was conducted to find out the information and knowledge of extension workers on thresholds of cotton bollworms, (Helicoverpa armigera and Diparopsis castanea). A sample of 30 extension officers was interviewed in Southern and Central provinces of Zambia. The results showed crucial deficiencies in extension worker's knowledge on thresholds of key pests and their implementation in cotton IPM. More than 60% extension officers were not aware of the basic information and knowledge such as thresholds of cotton bollworms, the recommended time to start scouting (weeks after germination of cotton) and the number of cotton plants to be examined for pest observance in each field. All extension officers indicated a desperate need for more field oriented practical training on thresholds. The recent increase in the incidence of aphids, Aphis gossypii as reported by 50% extension workers is obviously due to calendar sprays of synthetic pyrethroids and the lack of a suitable aphicide in current spray programme. Demonstrations on the practical aspects of thresholds deserve much more attention at college level and also during the in-service training. More co-operation in cotton IPM training for extension officers within Central and Southern Africa is suggested.

Observations on the fauna that live in close association with mounds constructed by Cubitermes testaceus (Isoptera: Termitidae) were made in a grassland area of Uganda. Termite nests were systematically excavated and dissected and a careful record of the fauna associated with each was made.

Arthropods belonging to three different classes were recorded in mounds of C. testaceus and with varying degrees of occurrence. They included insects (93%), chilopods (5%) and diplopods (2%). Ants were found to be the commonest insects in the mounds followed by other termites (21%) Coleoptera (9%) and Dictyoptera (1%).

In view of the carnivorous nature of most of the ants recorded, and considering the feeding behaviour observed in the field, it is suggested that they can have considerable effect on C. testaceus populations in the grassland ecosystem at Kaazi.

Plumbagin, a napthoquinone from the plant Plumbago zeylanica, delayed pupation when topically applied to newly moulted final instars of the leaf eating caterpillar Opisina arenosella Walker (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae). Pupae from treated larvae emerged into non-viable adults and had abnormalities such as deformed wings and shrunken abdomens; they also died much before the control insects. The results suggest that plumbagin interferes with the process of development and ecdysis of the insect.

Three field trials were conducted to determine the effect of various levels of resistance of South African sorghum hybrids on follow-up generations of Busseola fusca Fuller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). In one trial, plants were artificially infested with B. fusca larvae while the other trials were subjected to natural infestation of C. partellus. The number of damaged internodes and moth exit holes per stem were used to calculate a relative survival index which estimates the survival of larvae to the adult stage. A moth production index was calculated to estimate the role of a hybrid in area-wide suppression of stemborer populations. In the B. fusca trial, resistant and susceptible experimental hybrids produced 40 000 and 113 000 moths per hectare respectively, compared to 80 000 and 83 000 moths per hectare produced by the commercial hybrids. Larval damage to whorl leaves, assessed on a 1 to 9 scale, indicated leaf-feeding resistance of commercial hybrids to B. fusca ranging from susceptible to intermediate. Yield losses suffered by the hybrids in the B. fusca trial were greater than that suffered by a susceptible experimental hybrid, indicating susceptibility of South African hybrids to B. fusca. The evaluation of sorghum varieties for their potential to reduce stemborer populations should indicate their usefulness in integrated pest management systems.

Pyrethrins I and II were extracted from five seasonal Compositae herbs collected from semi-arid and hilly areas of North India. The relative toxicity of natural pyrethrins were evaluated against Mesocyclops leuckarti sensu lato. Based on the LC50 values, the extract of the plants could be arranged as follows: Tagetes minuta > Pulicaria crispa > T. patuia > T. minuta > P. angustifolia.

The ultrastructural changes in the ejaculatory duct epithelium in Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood was examined for special features related to spermatophore formation; special attention was paid to the cytoplasmic organelles and the plasma membrane specializations (apical infoldings and space formation). Internally, the transportation system is characterized by a cuticle-lined lumen bordered by cuboidal cells. The endoplasmic reticulum is scarce, while mitochondria are distributed throughout the cytoplasm. At the cuticular surface of the cells, extensive apical infoldings are associated with numerous mitochondria. Glycogen granules are found only in the cytoplasm of teneral flies. Apically, adjacent cells are tightly apposed; however, prominent intercellular spaces develop (1 to 7 days), permeate most of the epithelium and connect to the basal surface of the cells. These are features characteristic of transporting cells believed to have an absorptive function. As the adult fly ages, the ultrastructural characteristics of the epithelium change and are typified by the disappearance of glycogen granules and the formation of intercellular spaces. The features of the ejaculatory duct are discussed briefly in terms of their role in spermatophore formation.

The corn earworm damage to seven maize cultivars TZB, TZPB, WYI, 096EP6, Farz 25, ‘Kewesoke’ and Local White, was assessed during the early and late cropping seasons of 1980 and 1981 at Ikenne and Ilora located in the rain-forest and derived savanna zones, respectively. The effectiveness of dimethoate and permethrin in controlling the earworms was evaluated. All the cultivars appeared susceptible to earworm infestation in the two ecological zones. Infestation was consistently and significantly higher in the early season and also in the rain-forest zone. It ranged from 71.5 to 86% in the early and from 28 to 36.8% in the late seasons, respectively, at Ikenne. At Ilora, infestation ranged from 53 to 82% and from 20 to 75% in the early and late seasons, respectively. Mussidia nigrivenella and Heliolhis armigera were the dominant species recorded damaging the grains.

Earworm infestation was significantly lower on plots treated wtih three applications of 0.05 and 0.1% a.i. permethrin at weekly intervals than on plots that received the same dosages and sprays of dimethoate and the control. Maize yields were significantly higher on permethrin-treated plots. The lower dosage of permethrin is recommended to reduce chemical residue on maize grains.

In this study, the basic biology of and artificial rearing techniques for Bactrocera pyrifoliae (Drew and Hancock), a pest of peaches and plums in high-elevation areas of northern Vietnam and Thailand, were investigated for 5 years. Bactrocera pyrifoliae was found only between elevations of 1000 and 1500 m, heavily infesting peaches and plums from early June to harvest in mid-July. The durations of the egg, larval and pupal stages were determined under controlled environmental conditions in the laboratory, indicating that B. pyrifoliae is a multivoltine species. Larvae were successfully reared on a carrot and corn powder-based diet. Determinations of the appropriate adult density in colony cages, and also optimal temperature conditions for holding adults, were made. Bactrocera pyrifoliae performed better when the temperature was lowered during the night, as would be expected for a species adapted to temperate-like environments. Interestingly, adults originating from field-collected pupae emerged with a 3:1 female-biased sex ratio. Laboratory colonies, by generation seven, appeared to exhibit signs of inbreeding depression and required periodic incorporation of wild insects to restore egg hatch. To develop sound management techniques for populations of B. pyrifoliae infesting peaches, alternate commercial and native hosts infested outside the peach and plum fruiting season must be identified or some form of overwintering mechanism such as reproductive diapause be discovered. Documentation of mating behaviour in the field (a key to developing efficient traps), improvement in fertility in laboratory colonies, and eventually sterile insect technique-based integrated pest management for pest population management in the expanding low-chill temperate fruit-growing areas of northern Vietnam are also needed.

Parasitization of P. brassicae L. by A. glomeratus L. was found to be between 63.79 and 76.52% in Farm 1 and 92.68 and 93.43% in Farm 2. Population density of the parasitoids ranged between 35.16 ± 6.05 and 57.76 ± 13.20. The developmental period of the parasitoids within the host was 21 days and the pupal period 9 to 10 days. The population of the parasitoid showed a steady increase during November–December. The rate of pupation of P. brassicae showed a decline from 36.21% in mid-November to 23.48% in later November in Farm 1 with an early crop. In Farm 2 with a late crop the pupation rate dwindled from an already low 7.32 to 6.57% by late December.

Stem borers are major insect pests of rice in Africa. The utilization of varietal resistance in the management of these pests, has great economic potentials, as it involves no extra cost to the farmer and is also free from environmental hazards. Investigations into the sources of resistance to the African rice striped borer, Chilo zacconius, some possible factors associated with host plant resistance and the benefits derived from growing resistant varieties are briefly reviewed.

This study was conducted on both station and farmers' fields during the 2010 dry cropping season in the Vallée du Kou rice scheme. We investigated the effect of three rice-transplanting periods (8–10 days) on the population dynamics, damage and parasitism associated with rice stem borers. The on-station experiment was designed as a randomized complete block with three treatments (planting dates) and four replications. Regular intervals of 14 days were observed between subsequent planting dates. Weekly agronomic and entomological assessments were performed from the 21st day after transplanting (DAT) to the 84th DAT. The on-farm experiment covered 1200 ha divided into two zones in which 48 farmers' fields were selected according to the periods of rice transplanting (resulting in 16 fields per period). On-station results indicated 10.1% of deadhearts and 7.5% of whiteheads due to stem borers in the first transplanting period, resulting in the lowest yield (2 metric tons/ha). In farmers' fields, the genus Chilo was found to be the most injurious rice stem borer in Vallée du Kou. The highest larval parasitism (38.5%) was recorded in the third treatment. These results provide important data that can be used in the development of an integrated management strategy for rice insect pests in Vallée du Kou.

Observation on natural enemies of the stem-borer complex on sugar-cane in southern Ghana indicated that Descampsina sesamiae Mensil (Diptera:Tachinidae) is the most important larval parasite of Sesamia species. The relative abundance of this tachinid parasite appeared to vary with the rainfall pattern throughout the year and with the phenology of the sugar-cane plant. The rate of parasitism was found to be higher in the outgrowers fields than in the sugar estate's fields. Differences in cultural practices used as well as the type of vegetation bordering the sugar-cane fields, were believed to be responsible for the difference in the rate of parasitism of D. sesamiae on Sesamia species.

The activities of mankind which introduce excess nutrients and/or pollutants of various kinds into lakes, streams, estuaries, soils and the air, can, and often do, cause significant changes in aquatic and terrestrial environments world-wide. The pollution problem is critical because of the pressures of increasing populations, industrial growth and intensification of agricultural production. Conflicts of interest arise everywhere as challenges to resource use and natural state (‘beauty’) are turned into public issues.

The effects of Decis® (deltamethrin) and Systoate® (dimethoate) were assessed by the number of Megalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom) (Thysanoptera, Thripidae) recorded per cowpea plant at 40, 50, 60 and 70 days after planting (DAP), evaluated by the drop-cloth sampling method. The trial was carried out under natural infestation conditions during the 1985 early cropping season (from April to July). Systoate® was better than Decis® in controlling the flower thrips and its effect was significantly different from the unsprayed control (P = 0.01). The Decis® effect on the flower thrips was also effective in comparison with the control (P = 0.01). The effectiveness of two insecticides used in relation to pest management and the adequacy of the drop-cloth sampling method in relation to other methods are discussed.

Investigations of the phlebotomine sandflies fauna in a visceral leishmaniasis focus of Aba Roba in Ethiopia were carried out. This resulted in finding Phlebotomus celiae for the first time in the country. Previously, this species was incriminated as a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Kitui, Kenya where the disease is endemic. It is possible that P. celiae has a wide distribution covering areas of similar ecological niches as those of its first description.

The influence of soil moisture and temperature on hatchling weight during the solitary phase of Locusta migratoria migratorioides (Reiche and Fairmaire) was studied. Soil moisture is an important weight determining factor; heavier hatchlings are produced in relatively wetter soils. Temperature has no apparent influence on hatchling weight. Hatchling weight and hatchling survival to the second instar showed a positive significant correlation.

This paper is based on experiences obtained during a joint enterprise between the Social Science Interface Research Unit, of the Crop Pests Research Programme, and the Livestock Ticks Research Programme at ICIPE. Topics bearing on technology design and development are emphasized.

The resource-poor farmer as conceptualized within ICIPE and reinforced by research experience, is by definition a person who operates a diversified system of production in which food security concerns and cash income intakes are crucial.

The family/household provides most of the labour required in production in African farming communities. For this reason, their labour investment into the adoption of novel activities or technological innovation and their assessment of the value of such innovations requiring changes in their normative practice, is appraised primarily in terms of the returns they would get for the additional labour input.

It is noteworthy that much of the so-called family labour is, in fact, female labour. It is therefore arguable that the perception of the women of technological inputs and innovations as profitable, is crucial for the successful adoption and social acceptance of novel technology.

Although agricultural land is in increasingly short supply, it would appear that the crucial limiting factor in production is not a shortage of land per se, since a good number of households do not fully exploit all the agricultural land at their disposal. Labour, and/or cash income to secure additional labour, appears to be the most important constraint to production. This tends to suggest that for future technological interventions in agricultural systems of the rural poor, consideration will have to be given to inputs which optimize the use of family/household labour.

The escalating population growth suggests that focus on women's health and incomes could significantly and qualitatively improve the prospects for the adoption of new and improved technology in areas such as pest and vector control.
