A new circularly polarized planar array antenna using linearly polarized microstrip patches is designed and optimized for X-band wireless communication applications. Four square patch elements with feed network are used to design the circularly polarized array antenna. The feed network consists of microstrip lines on the obverse side of the dielectric substrate and slot line on the reverse side of the substrate. Both-sided MIC technology is successfully employed to apply its inherent advantages in the design process of the array structure. The unequal feed line is used to create 90° phase difference between the linearly polarized patches. Therefore, the circular polarization is realized by the combination of linearly polarized patches and unequal feed line. Characteristics of the proposed array are investigated by using two electromagnetic (EM) simulators: advanced design system and EMPro. The −10 dB impedance bandwidth of the antenna is around 5%. The 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 1.48% is obtained. The design of the proposed antenna along with parametric study is presented and discussed.

The paper proposes a new design for a single-arm, rectangular, spiral antenna (SARSA) with a wide azimuth space coverage. The antenna, operating at around 3.3 GHz, is capable of steering the beam in four separate directions in the azimuth plane. Only three DC signals are required to control the seven PIN diodes attached along the spiral arm. The antenna has a 200-MHz-bandwidth around 3.3 GHz with stable maximum beam directions that are defined by setting of the switches. Considerations required in selecting switch positions when designing such antennas for other frequencies, are presented. The measured return loss, radiation pattern and gain, all have close correlation with the simulation results. A detailed comparison of our design with those already proposed in the literature is given.

In this paper, the analysis and simulation of a novel geometrical structure of the frequency selective surface (FSS), which has been achieved through the conductive loading of the simple circular ring with wedge-shaped metal vanes has been discussed. The electrical performance and behavior of the proposed structure have been studied in Ku band (12–18 GHz) of the electromagnetic spectrum for satellite communication. We have radially optimized the proposed structure to enhance the performance, such as reflection and transmission bandwidth. We have also discussed the effect of incident electric field at 0°, 10°, 30°, and 50° on the electrical performance of the proposed FSS. In addition to this, the effect of angular sensitivity on the proposed structure through increasing the number of conductive loaded wedge-shaped metal vanes is also explored. However, the structural parameters of the proposed FSS have been obtained through the synthesis technique. The analytical results obtained from the synthesis technique have been supported by the simulation results achieved through CST Microwave Studio as well as Ansoft high frequency structural simulator (HFSS), which are commercially available simulators based on the finite integral and finite-element technique, respectively. Furthermore, for validation of the numerical results, the Ansoft circuit simulator which is based on mixed potential integral equations (MPIE) and solved by the method-of-moment has also been used to obtain the reflection and transmission parameters through the values of inductance and capacitance, which have been achieved by the numerical analysis.

This paper presents a very flexible tool for numerically evaluating the small-signal and noise parameters of a transmission line subject to an arbitrary thermal gradient. Contrary to previous methods, the proposed approach allows straightforwardly taking into account possible variations of electrical parameters along the propagation direction, such as may be expected when temperature ranges between very different values. The main application of the proposed method is cable modeling in noise-figure measurement setups under cryogenic operation: in such circumstances, indeed, the coaxial cables (or waveguide) at the interface between the outside and the inside of the cryogenic chamber are subject to remarkable temperature excursions. As a consequence, significant de-embedding errors may arise if the cables are not correctly modeled, given the very low values of noise figure which are commonly exhibited by cryo-cooled active devices.

The silicon/porous silicon (PS) hybrid substrate is an interesting candidate for the monolithic integration of radiofrequency (RF) circuits. Thus, passive components can be integrated on the insulating PS regions close to the active devices integrated on silicon. Regarding silicon, hybrid substrates allow the improvement of RF circuits performances. To demonstrate it, coplanar waveguides have been integrated on glass, silicon, and localized PS substrates. The characterization results show that the substrate losses are reduced with PS.

A 5G rotated frame radiator for multiple applications is presented in the following paper. The presented geometry is capable of radiating the large frequency band from 2.91 to 12.17 GHz, which covers the 5G-(I) sub-6 GHz band, X-band communication with high efficiency. The impedance bandwidth of the radiator is 128%, with an electrical size of 0.24 λ × 0.24 λ × 0.15 λ in lambda. The antenna is simulated with an FR4 substrate using CST Simulator. 06-stages evolution process is also investigated by simulations, and corresponding S-parameter results are presented. Antenna's design comprises a patch in a rotated square fractal-like frame fed by a microstrip line. The proposed structure also demonstrates stable radiation patterns across the operating bandwidth. The proposed radiator has a high gain of 3.8 dBi, and an efficiency of 85%, which claimed that UWB range of the designed antenna. Therefore, it is useful for 5G-(I) sub-6 GHz band, X-band applications, including mobile, radar, and satellite microwave communication.

In this paper, a new dual-band Wilkinson power divider (WPD) is designed and fabricated using novel low and high impedance stubs instead of quarter-wavelength transmission lines. The proposed circuit was analyzed using odd and even mode analysis, and the optimal values of design parameters were obtained using the particle swarm optimization algorithm. The designed power divider has input reflection coefficients (S11) of −22.1 and −17 dB at the first operating frequency of 2.2 GHz and the second operating frequency of 14.2 GHz, respectively. It also improves stop-band and fractional bandwidth (FBW) while maintaining a simple topology. The proposed WPD suppresses undesired harmonics from the second to the fifth with an attenuation level of less than −20 dB in the first band and generates a broad stop-band (4.4–11.5 GHz). In the first band, the FBW is 54.5%, and in the second band, it is 20.1%.

In this paper, the patch-type frequency selective surfaces (FSS) based on substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) technology is proposed to improve the bandwidth (BW) and angular performance. The proposed FSS configuration overcomes the limitations of both conventional 2D and 3D FSS structures. A closely coupled cascaded mechanism is employed to combine two identical FSS elements separated by thin dielectric substrate results in incorporation of SIW technology; hence, named as 2.5D FSS. A derived equivalent circuit model is used to estimate the basic performance of proposed FSS–SIW elements, and the response of analytical expressions has been validated and final design is obtained using full-wave simulations. Two basic FSS elements viz. single square loop and a Jerusalem cross have been investigated to prove the enhancement in their BW and angular stability. The proposed technique evidently improves the BW and angular stability of FSS structures than in its established form. Besides, various important parameters that influence the performance characteristics of reported 2.5D FSSs are also studied. The important observations made on the thickness, as the thickness increases the bandstop FSS, can change to bandpass FSS. Finally, the proposed FSS structure has been fabricated and measured using free space measurement setup, to show the effectiveness of theoretical results. The measured results show good agreement with simulated results at normal and oblique incidence angle.

In this paper, a sandwiched type frequency selective surface (FSS) is designed and analyzed. The design procedure and operating principle is given based on the equivalent circuit model. The proposed FSS includes two identical layers of periodic metallic arrays, which are separated by a foam layer. In each layer of the periodic array, the unit cell is composed of a gridded-triple square loop structure. The FSS provides three pass-bands, in which a flat band response is presented. Three bands are separated by one or two transmission zeros, which leads to a sharp rejection on both sides of each pass-band. The central frequencies of the three pass-bands are 7.0, 10.9 and 14.0 GHz. To verify the simulated results, a prototype of the FSS is fabricated and measured. The simulated results agree well with the measured ones. This work can be used in area of a radar stealth or satellite communication system.

In this work a de-embedding technique oriented to the evaluation of the load line at the intrinsic resistive core of microwave FET devices is presented. The approach combines vector high-frequency nonlinear load-pull measurements with an accurate description of the reactive nonlinearities, thus allowing one to determine the actual load line of the drain–source current generator under realistic conditions. Thanks to the proposed approach, the dispersive behavior of the resistive core and the compatibility of the voltage and current waveforms with reliability requirements can be directly monitored. Different experiments carried out on a gallium nitride HEMT sample are reported.

This paper investigates a wideband and low axial ratio circularly polarized (CP) antenna, which is composed of a monopole on a novel polarization rotating reflective surface (PRRS) based on a corner-truncated artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) structure. By adjusting the dimensions of truncated corner properly, the PRRS has two polarization rotation (PR) frequency points. Then, a large PR band of 18% (5.55–6.65 GHz) can be achieved with two adjacent PR frequency points coming together. The profile of the newly PRRS is only0.04λ0. With corner-truncated AMC-based PRRS loading, a measured impedance bandwidth of 1.8 GHz (5.4–7.2 GHz) and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 1 GHz (5.55–6.65 GHz) could be obtained by the monopole antenna and validated by measurements. The values of AR were well below 1 dB at most of the CP region, which show a perfect CP performance. Moreover, the proposed antenna has exhibited a large axial ratio beamwidth in both the xoz- and yoz-planes and a peak gain of 6.1 dBic within the operational bandwidth.

In through-the-wall radar imaging, multipath propagation can create ghost targets, which can adversely affect the image reconstruction process. However, unlike genuine targets, ghost positions are aspect-dependent, which means their position changes with the transceiver location. This paper proposes efficient ghost suppression methods exploiting aspect dependence feature under compressive sensing framework. This paper proposes a generalized signal model that accommodates for the reflections of the front-wall and target-to-target interactions, making the scheme more practical, yet the knowledge of the location of reflecting geometry is not a requirement as in most of the recent literatures. In addition, the sensing matrix is greatly reduced making the methods more attractive. Moreover, this paper investigates the influence of array configurations by examining two antenna array configurations: multimonostatic, and single-view bistatic configurations. Results based on synthesized data and real experiment show that the proposed method can greatly suppress multipath ghosts and hence increase signal-to-clutter ratio.

In this work, simple, low profile, compact quarter-mode substrate-integrated waveguide (QMSIW)-based antennas are proposed for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) at 5.2/5.5 GHz and Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) at 5.8 GHz, respectively. By implementing QMSIW technique, the electrical size of the antenna is reduced up to 1/4th of the conventional circular SIW cavities. Thanks to the quarter mode concept, the antenna size is reduced significantly by preserving its dominant mode. The resonant frequency of the dominant mode TM010 is independently tuned at 5.2, 5.5, and 5.8 GHz after loading the QMSIW cavity with metalized via holes, subsequently. The on-body performance of the antenna is verified on pork tissues at 5.8 GHz and it is found to be insensitive with respect to surroundings. The measured gain and simulated efficiency of the proposed antenna at 5.8 GHz in free space are 4.8 dBi and 92%, while in the proximity of pork tissues values are 3.25 dBi and 57%, respectively. Moreover, the measurement results demonstrate a good matching with the simulation results.

This paper presents the capacity of an S band circularly polarized patch antenna using a ferrite material for low-earth orbiting satellites (2025–2100 MHz for TeleCommand) to obtain a semi-isotropic radiation pattern. Indeed, circularly polarized antennas are generally large and bulky which is often incompatible for spatial applications especially for small satellites. A new antenna design is proposed with the following maximum dimensions: a diameter of 80 mm and a height of 12 mm. The structure presents an axial ratio lower than 6 dB (according to requirements) and a realized gain higher than −6 dB over a 4% bandwidth at the limit of coverage i.e. 90° irrespective of the azimuth angle (φ).

This paper presents a fully integrated three-way Doherty architecture to address the challenges of 5G applications using laterally-diffused metal-oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) technology. By using the so-called CDS cancelation method for the Doherty combiner design, a wideband impedance transformation is achieved, that combined with the three-way Doherty power amplifier (DPA) architecture allows for high efficiency in deep back-off, with a reduced load modulation for high bandwidth. Throughout this paper, the design approach and realization are described, while multiple critical design challenges will be addressed such as low frequency drain resonance optimization, impact of in-package coupling effects, and linearity versus efficiency tradeoff. Two state-of-the-art three-way fully integrated LDMOS DPA monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMICs) are presented to demonstrate how these measures have been successfully applied to different power amplifier (PA) line-up components for 5G base station systems. First, a 60 W 1.8–2.2 GHz multi-stage device for driver application in true dual-band operation is presented. The circuit design pays special attention to extended PA video bandwidth thanks to integrated passive device. After digital pre-distortion (DPD) in dual-band operation, this highly linear device achieves an outstanding adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) of −56 dBc for a 2cLTE 20 MHz 8 dB peak-to-average ratio signal spaced by 345 MHz, thus 385 MHz instantaneous bandwidth (IBW), with 29% efficiency at 35 dBm, 12 dB output back-off (OBO). Second, the simulation and measurement results of a 55 W 2.6 GHz multi-stage DPA for massive-MIMO final stage application are presented, which yields an excellent linearized efficiency of 49% using a 200 MHz 10cLTE signal with an ACLR lower than −47.5 dBc. For 8cLTE 20 MHz (160 MHz IBW), the device yields 50% efficiency with −50.7 dBc ACLR linearized after DPD. The achieved efficiency is well comparable to published GaN DPAs. These results were achieved by improved simulation techniques to minimize frequency dispersion and thus allow high efficiency operation over wide bandwidth. Both devices show that LDMOS is not only a mature technology which allows those PAs to be reliable and low-cost for mass production in very compact packages, but also provide best-in-class RF performance according to the needs of 5G base station systems.

In this paper, different techniques for the generation of additional transmission zeros (TZs) in planar waveguide filters are investigated. In the classical theory, TZs are generated only by destructive interference of non-adjacent cavities, limiting the available number of TZs to the filter order itself. However, more approaches for the generation of TZs are known, including bypass-coupling in oversized cavities, frequency-dependent coupling apertures as well as dispersive/resonant TZs which can be realized by the direct source to load cross-coupling. The aim of this paper is to combine several of the strategies in one physical filter set-up to increase the maximal number of TZs beyond the filter order. Different Ku-band fourth-order filter set-ups are presented, showing in total between six and eight real as well as complex TZs. Three filters are manufactured as a proof of concept and compared with the simulation, showing very good agreement.

Large-signal modeling of Gallium Nitride (GaN) based high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) demands a proper description of trapping effects. In this paper, a new, simplified yet accurate drain-lag description is proposed, enhancing the simulation accuracy and the extraction flow of the physics-based compact model ASM-HEMT. The present study investigates the impact of drain lag on specific physical phenomena, focusing on the relation between trap states, surface-potential calculations, and electron transport properties. It is supplemented with a revised extraction procedure, minimizing the required measurements, thereby the undesired consequences of several passes on the same device, using pulsed I-V and pulsed S-parameters only, and approaches for efficient and accurate simulation results. We show that the proposed trap model is a determinative tool for simulating both small and large-signal behavior predicting precisely S-parameters and load-pull performance.

Extreme-high-speed communication exceeding 100 Gbps is one requirement for 6G. To satisfy extreme-high-speed-communication, one solution is to utilize terahertz bands above 100 GHz. To determine the new radio-interface technologies and service frequency bands for 6G, terahertz propagation characteristics above 100 GHz need to be understood. In this paper, we introduce our new radio-network topology for 6G and then show the frequency dependency of key propagation phenomena such as the characteristics of path loss in an urban environment, human blockage, and scattering from a rough building surface up to 150 GHz. Human blockage loss increases and the scattering is more diffused as the frequency increases. In the path-loss characteristics, it was found that path-loss frequency dependency is stronger than that given by conventional path-loss model because of scattering effects from a rough building surface.

An earlier version of this paper was presented at the 2021 15th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP) and was published in its Proceedings. This paper describes a design, fabrication, and characterization of a planar frequency-coded retroreflector for indoor localization. The retroreflector is fabricated in high-resistive silicon and consists of a Luneburg lens antenna and a photonic crystal high-Q resonator reflective layer, providing ranging and identification within the same tag and bandwidth. The Luneburg lens antenna presents a measured gain of 21.63 dBi at a design frequency of 240 GHz. The frequency-coded retroreflector allows for ranging in a continuous 130 degree angular range in azimuthal plane, with a discrete but repeatable two-resonance identification over multiples of 15 degree. Its maximum measured radar cross-section is −23.48 dBsqm at a frequency of 240 GHz. The retroreflective tag set in ideal line-of-sight situation is compared to a non-line-of-sight arrangement showing the influence of a metallic rod as an obstacle on the overall tag detection parameters. Finally, the successful read-out of the retroreflective tag is discussed in unknown environments, where no a-priori information is available.

A compact CPW-fed printed monopole slot antenna is presented for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. The antenna comprises of a dome-shaped radiating element in which embedded is an open-loop inverted triangular-shaped slot (TSS). The antenna is fed through a coplanar waveguide to provide an ultra-wide impedance bandwidth of 8.95 GHz (2.58–11.53 GHz) which corresponds to a bandwidth ratio of 1:4.46 for VSWR <2. The antenna possesses a notch band functionality to filter out interfering C-band signals like wireless local-area network (WLAN). The notch band frequency is determined by physical parameters defining the TSS that allows fine control of the notch's location. The proposed antenna also possesses a flat gain response expect at the notched band and occupies a relatively small volume of 25 × 25 × 0.8 mm3 for ease of system integration.
