In this paper, a compact, low-profile, coplanar waveguide-fed metamaterial inspired dual-band microstrip antenna is presented for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) application. To achieve the goal a triangular split ring resonator is used along with an open-ended stub. The proposed antenna has a compact size of 20 × 24 mm2 fabricated on an FR-4 epoxy substrate with dielectric constant (εr) 4.4. The antenna provides two distinct bands I from 2.40 to 2.48 GHz and II from 4.7 to 6.04 GHz with reflection coefficient better than −10 dB, covering the entire WLAN (2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz) band spectrum. The performance of the proposed metamaterial inspired antenna is also studied in terms of the radiation pattern, efficiency, and the realized gain. A comparative study is also presented to show the performance of the proposed metamaterial inspired antenna with respect to other conventional antenna structures in terms of overall size, bandwidth, gain, and reflection coefficient. Finally, the antenna is fabricated and tested. The simulated results show good agreement with the measured results.

In this paper, a novel decoupling technique for closely spaced E-plane patch antennas using defect ground structure (DGS) is proposed. The electric field coupling between the antennas is suppressed by etching DGS which consists of a pair of rectangular slots and four stubs on the ground plane. Moreover, unlike the other methods, the DGS is not etched in the middle of the antennas but loaded along the outer edge of the radiated patch. Thus, through the adopted technology the distance between the antenna elements is reduced and the isolation is increased. To validate the improvements by adopting the proposed technology, the array with DGS loading has been fabricated and then measured. The measurement results show that designed antennas have 95 MHz 10-dB impedance bandwidth, which is 25 MHz higher than that of the antenna without DGS. More importantly, isolation improvements have been increased from 8.5 to 31.3 dB by using the decoupling technique when the antennas are placed with a 0.032 λ0 edge-to-edge distance, where λ0 is the free-space wavelength. Therefore, this technique can be widely applied to improve isolation in a compact and low profile antenna system.

A new model is proposed on how to account for the inertia of scatterers in radar-based turbulence intensity retrieval techniques. Rain drop inertial parameters are derived from fundamental physical laws, which are gravity, the buoyancy force, and the drag force. The inertial distance is introduced, which is a typical distance at which a particle obtains the same wind velocity as its surroundings throughout its trajectory. For the measurement of turbulence intensity, either the Doppler spectral width or the variance of Doppler mean velocities is used. The relative scales of the inertial distance and the radar resolution volume determine whether the variance of velocities is increased or decreased for the same turbulence intensity. A decrease can be attributed to the effect that inertial particles are less responsive to the variations of wind velocities. An increase can be attributed to inertial particles that have wind velocities corresponding to an average of wind velocities over their backward trajectories, which extend outside the radar resolution volume. Simulations are done for the calculation of measured radar velocity variance, given a 3-D homogeneous isotropic turbulence field, which provides valuable insight in the correct tuning of parameters for the new model.

Two frequency-tripler monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) reaching sub-millimeter-wave output frequencies of 315 GHz are presented. The convenient integration of transistor–based field effect transistor (FET) frequency multipliers into multifunctional MMICs is shown by integration of a single–stage frequency-tripler with a buffer amplifier generating −0.5 dBm of peak output power at 288. Without post-amplification an average output power of −10.1 dBm in the output frequency range from 285 to 315 is measured with 10 dBm of input power. The 3-dB bandwidth is more than 30 GHz and could not be determined exactly due to the measurement setup. Both MMICs are realized in a 50 nm metamorphic high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) transistor technology. A multiple power-meter measurement technique including a waveguide filter is used to measure accurately the second harmonic power content within the output spectrum.

A meandered-dual-antenna structure is proposed for UHF radiofrequency identification (RFID) tag. It is composed of two independent antennas printed on the one side of the substrate board. One of the antennas is exclusively used for receiving and harvesting sufficient energy to the tag chip having the complex conjugate impedance of the receiving antenna. The other is for backscatter to enhance maximum differential radar cross-section with purely real input impedance, to enhancement the read range. The receiving antenna is formed by a rectangular loop and a parasitic meandered line. The rectangular loop is used as a feeding element for the meandered line. The backscattering antenna is made using a meandered dipole along with a thin rectangular strip. The input impedance of the receiving antenna is designed to be conjugate matched to the chip impedance (13.5-j110 Ω), whereas the input impedance of backscattering antenna alternatively switched to open and short circuit for modulating the backscattered field. The input impedance of receiving and backscattering antennas is measured using differential probe technique. The simulated and measured results are found in good agreement. It is also demonstrated that the read range of UHF RFID system increased considerably by using the dual-antenna structure.

Compact modified T-slot circular patch antenna for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) applications, which has good response for four operating frequency bands is developed. Here the design consists of a circular patch with a new slot loaded T- shape on one side of the substrate and a feeder line on the other side of the substrate. A shorting pin is located between the patch and the feeder line. This proposed antenna resonates at the frequencies of 2, 4.8, 5.4, and 6.2 GHz covering the S-band, C-band, and LTE applications. The independent tuning of frequency bands is achieved by varying the length of the slots. By independent tuning of frequency bands, the selection of interested frequency band is achieved. The single element with miniaturized size of 1.945λ × 1.945 λ (30 × 30 mm2) is achieved including the feed line. The antenna has been tested for MIMO applications. The measured envelope correlation coefficient between the two elements, which are spaced 0.139 λ is <0.1(low correlation) and mutual coupling is found to be in the range of −20 dB to −80 dB. The simulation and measurement results of reflection coefficient, mutual coupling, and radiation pattern are presented.

Continuous-wave (CW) radars have been recently investigated in healthcare aiming at contactless health monitoring. However, a major problem in monostatic CW architectures is represented by the unwanted leakage produced by poor isolation between transmitter and receiver, which can drastically decrease the receiver's sensitivity reducing therefore the radar dynamic range. Although this situation can be easily controlled in case of narrowband CW radar by an appropriate passive microwave design, it becomes much more complicated in case of stepped-frequency CW and frequency-modulated CW architectures that present an ultra-wideband nature. In this paper, a monostatic CW radar integrating a tunable wideband leakage canceler aiming at indoor tagless localization is presented and discussed. The use of the feedforward canceler allows a strong reduction of the unwanted leakage over the whole radar bandwidth. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, showing an outstanding improvement of the radar dynamic range.

The operation of a microwave photonic link is thoroughly investigated both theoretically and experimentally. To this aim, we have developed a simulation tool based on an accurate physical model embedded in a radio frequency (RF) chain simulator. The theoretical predictions are tested on an intensity modulation-direct detection (IMDD) link we have specifically developed to this purpose. Our simulation tool takes into account both optical and electrical characteristics of the link components including the laser dynamics and impedance matching networks. It thus enables an accurate understanding of the different physical and electrical phenomena governing the link's performances even under unusual operation conditions. Specifically, we were able to isolate an unusual behavior and to confirm it experimentally. It is thereby clear that the noise figure of a microwave optical link can be lower than the electrical losses, such as a mismatched output passive electrical network. This state is reached when the optical losses are high enough and when the link's output impedance is mismatched, too.

A new technique to realize quasi-elliptic bandpass filters with extreme close-in rejection is presented in this paper. The basic idea consists of embedding non-resonating mode waveguide cavities within the structure of an evanescent-mode filter. Such a combination of cavities and resonators allows the generation of very close transmission zeros while realizing at the same time relatively wide passbands and stopbands. Both H-plane TE201 mode and E-plane TM110 mode configurations are used as non-resonating mode waveguide cavities. In contrast with the other elliptic evanescent-mode filters using conventional approaches, the insertion loss degradation at the filter cut-off frequencies is minimized thanks to the high-Q factor of the waveguide cavities, whose corresponding poles are located right at the edges of the passband. The experimental results of an evanescent-mode filter having 9.950–11.000 GHz passband and providing more than 45 dB rejection between 11.040 and 11.050 GHz validate the proposed solution.

Optimization of hyperparameters of artificial neural network (ANN) usually involves a trial and error approach which is not only computationally expensive but also fails to predict a near-optimal solution most of the time. To design a better optimized ANN model, evolutionary algorithms are widely utilized to determine hyperparameters. This work proposes hyperparameters optimization of the ANN model using an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm. The different ANN hyperparameters considered are a number of hidden layers, neurons in each hidden layer, activation function, and training function. The proposed technique is validated using inverse modeling of two meander line electromagnetic bandgap unit cells and a slotted ultra-wideband antenna loaded with EBG structures. Three other evolutionary algorithms viz. hybrid PSO, conventional PSO, and genetic algorithm are also adopted for the hyperparameter optimization of the ANN models for comparative analysis. Performances of all the models are evaluated using quantitative assessment parameters viz. mean square error, mean absolute percentage deviation, and coefficient of determination (R2). The comparative investigation establishes the accurate and efficient prediction capability of the ANN models tuned using IPSO compared to other evolutionary algorithms.

The rate of signal transmission on or between monolithic integrated circuits is limited by the cross-talk and the dispersion due to the wired interconnects. The bandwidth limitations can be overcome by wireless chip-to-chip and on-chip interconnects via integrated antennas. In this work the utilization of the electronic circuit ground planes as radiating elements for the integrated antennas has been proposed. This allows for optimal usage of chip area, as the antennas share the same metallization structure as the circuits. By exciting the interconnects between the patch areas in transmission line modes as well as in antenna modes, the interference between signals from circuit to circuit and antenna excitation signals is minimized. This has been achieved by inserting a transformer in the antenna feeding network. Examples of possible antenna and feeding structures have been investigated numerically. Scaled prototypes of the integrated antennas have been manufactured and measured.

This paper presents small balanced bandpass filters exhibiting wide differential-mode pass bands and high common-mode suppression. The filters are implemented in microstrip technology and their topology consists of multisection mirrored stepped impedance resonators (SIRs) alternating with mirrored interdigital capacitors. The mirrored SIRs provide the required common-mode transmission zeros to achieve effective rejection of that mode in the region of interest, i.e. the differential-mode pass band. An automated design method for such filters, based on aggressive space mapping, is reported. The method uses the equivalent circuit model of both the mirrored SIRs and the interdigital capacitors, and filter synthesis is based on a quasi-Newton iterative algorithm where parameter extraction is the key aspect. The automated design approach is illustrated through an order-3 filter, where it is demonstrated that the filter topology is generated from the specifications. As compared with previous balanced filters based on mirrored SIRs coupled through admittance inverters, the proposed filters of this work are smaller and the design method is simplified, since bandwidth compensation due to the narrowband functionality of the inverters is avoided.

In this paper, a uniplanar RF-MEMS second-order bandpass filter with reconfigurable center frequency is presented. It is based on quarter-wavelength slotline resonators and coplanar waveguide (CPW)-to-slotline multimodal immitance inverters (MIIs), which are reconfigured using RF-MEMS switchable CPW air-bridges (SABs). The filter can be adequately explained and designed using multimodal theory and circuit models. A surface micromachining process on high-resistivity silicon substrate was used to fabricate the filter. Experimental results show frequency reconfiguration from 12 to 13 GHz, maintaining the same relative bandwidth, and insertion losses of 4.6 and 4.7 dB, respectively.

Nature inspired optimization algorithms, namely artificial bee colony (ABC) optimization and firefly algorithm (FA), have been applied to synthesize beam patterns of a hexagonal planar array of isotropic elements. Two different cases, comprising two different beam patterns of a pencil beam and a square footprint pattern over a bounded region with lower peak sidelobe levels are presented. The pencil beam is generated by thinning the uniformly excited array and the square footprint pattern is generated by imposing optimum amplitudes, phases, and their corresponding states (“on”/“off”) to the array elements. The optimum values of the parameters for both the cases are computed using ABC and FA individually, and the superiority of FA over ABC for the proposed problem in terms of computing solutions for both the cases is established.

A novel approach for the rigorous design of magnetic resonant wireless power transfer links is introduced. We show how, starting from two coupled inductors and making use of general network theory, it is possible to derive analytic rules for designing the source and load terminations which provide the maximum power transfer efficiency or maximize the received power. We also show that, by adding suitable matching networks to two coupled inductors we can realize a wireless link acting as a 1:n transformer and having the all required tunable reactive elements on the primary side. The proposed topology greatly simplifies the design, since only an inductive coil and a fixed capacitance are required on the secondary side; in addition, when tuning is required due to coils misalignment or to link distance variation, it can be attained by acting on the transmitter side without the need for a feedback communication through the link. Moreover, when the load resistance is designed for maximum output power, its value is fixed and does not depend on the coupling. A numerical and experimental verification of the proposed approach is also presented.

This paper presents a planar microwave sensor for the noninvasive detection of glucose concentration in diabetic patients. The designed sensor operates from the 3.8 to 6.2 GHz frequency band, which covers the 5.8 GHz Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) band. The designed sensor shows a percentage bandwidth of 23.8% with a reflection coefficient (S11) of −50 dB at the resonance frequency of 5.7 GHz. The detection was carried out by varying the relative permittivity of the blood in accordance with the glucose concentration based on the Cole–Cole model. The measured result is calculated in terms of varying resonance frequency with variation in the reflection coefficient |S11| of the designed sensor. The observed frequency shift and corresponding sensitivity of the sensor are found at 1.7 GHz and 0.089 MHz/mg dL−1, respectively. An experimental validation has also been performed, and the frequency shift is analyzed by interacting the human thumb with the sensor. The simulated and experimental results of the designed sensor suggest that it can be useful for detecting glucose concentration noninvasively for diabetic patients.

In this paper, a new compact hybrid fractal antenna with ultrawideband (UWB) behavior is proposed. Two merged fractals shapes, i.e. Sierpinski carpet and Sierpinski Gasket fed with coplanar waveguide (CPW) feed make patch as multiband and broadband antenna. The antenna is optimized using particle swarm optimization for side length of Sierpenski Gasket fractal and bandwidth. The overall width of the patch is taken as a parameter for optimizing bandwidth. The total size of presented antenna is 59 × 29 mm2. The antenna resonates at 2–5.2 GHz, so that wideband operation is observed. Antenna with this type of characteristics can be used when UWB response at lower frequencies is required. Sierpenski Gasket performs two functions in the proposed design, i.e. to radiate as well as impedance transformer to Sierpenski carpet. The proposed design presents novelty in design to achieve proper impedance matching to edge of Sierpenski carpet design with CPW feed by making Sierpenski Gasket as impedance transformer.

This paper presents a novel dual-band (DB) dual-polarized (DP) shared aperture antenna with high isolation by using a combination of microstrip dipoles and dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) for S and C bands, respectively. In the S band, two sets of proximity coupled stacked microstrip dipoles which crossed at the center are employed to achieve dual-linear polarization (DLP) and obtain desired bandwidth (BW), isolation, and pure polarization. The rectangle DRA with hybrid feed is selected as the C band element for its advantages of small base area and high isolation, and a 2 × 2 array is presented with the “pair-wise” anti-phase feed technique to achieve a low cross-polarized level. Moreover, benefited from the back feed scheme, the proposed antenna has a symmetrical structure and has the potential of expanding into a larger aperture. The proposed antenna has been manufactured and measured, and the results agree well with simulations, which prove the validity of the proposed design.

This paper presents a technique to increase the bandwidth in substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed antennas, inspired by the design of cavity filters. The proposed structure consists of a slot antenna backed by two cavities, located one on top of the other and coupled through a slot. To demonstrate the bandwidth increase, a standard cavity-backed SIW antenna, with a rectangular slot etched in the top metal plane, has been designed, manufactured, and measured. Subsequently, a similar antenna was developed, by doubling the substrate thickness with the aim to improve the bandwidth. Finally, the new topology of two-cavity SIW antenna has been implemented and compared with the two previous ones. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed two-cavity antenna exhibits a bandwidth twice as large as the standard SIW cavity-backed antenna.

The airborne radomes have to cater superior electromagnetic (EM) performance with bandpass characteristics of stealth application. In this regard, a hybrid A-sandwich radome is proposed in this paper. The proposed radome consists of a novel strongly coupled frequency selective surface (FSS) core sandwiched between two dielectric layers (acts as skin) to form an A-sandwich structure. The dielectric layers are cascaded in such a way that the middle layer has less dielectric parameters than the skin dielectric. The core layer comprises a modified FSS array using strongly coupled FSS layers through a series of metallic vias. This strongly-coupled FSS element will have the advantage of eliminating inter-element interference and improves the EM performance characteristics of the structure. The structure exhibits very good band-pass characteristics (>90%) at a normal impinging angle with sharp roll-off characteristics. To show the efficacy of the proposed structure, the transmission loss has been compared with that of conventional A-sandwich radomes at 0°, 50° incidence angle for both TE and TM polarization. Conformal analysis of the unit cell has been carried out, and sector-wise thickness optimization was performed to analyze the structure for the conformal shaped radome application. Finally, a physical prototype has been fabricated and measured its scattering parameters, radiation characteristics in a fully shielded anechoic chamber. The results are encouraging and prove its suitability for radome application.
