A basis , for a Banach space X is said to be boundedly complete [4, p. 284] if whenever is a sequence of scalars for which converges. It is well-known [2, p. 70] that if is a boundedly complete basis for X then X is isometric to a conjugate space; in fact, X = [fi]*, where is the sequence of coefficient functionals associated with the basis It follows that no basis for C[0,1] can be boundedly complete since no separable conjugate space contains C0[l], yet C[0,1] is a separable space which contains c0.

In this paper the author continues the search for a suitable integral transform that can be applied to certain boundary value problems involving the Helmholtz equation and the condition of radiation. The transform in question must be capable of eliminating the r-dependence appearing in the partial differential equation

About 15 years ago, Lutwak and Zhang (E. Lutwak and G. Zhang, Blaschke–Santalo inequalities, J. Differ. Geom. 47 (1997), 1–16) introduced the notion of Lp moment bodies and established important volume inequalities for them, which were recently generalized by Haberl and Schuster (C. Haberl and E. Schuster, General Lp affine isoperimetric inequalities, J. Differ. Geom. 83 (2009), 1–26). In this paper, we establish new Brunn–Minkowski-type inequalities with respect to Blaschke Lp harmonic addition for the quermassintegrals and dual quermassintegrals of Lp moment bodies.

Dr V. O. Ennola has pointed out that there is a mistake in this paper. The inequality for dox at the foot of page 76 does not imply the stated inequality between the second and third lines on page 77. This error vitiates the entire argument, and I have not so far been able to put it right.

Given a variety of lattice-ordered algebras, a lattice L is said to be a relative-lattice if every closed interval [a, b] of L may be given the structure of an algebra in (in other words, is the reduct of a member of —not necessarily unique). This paper discusses the characterisation in terms of forbidden substructures of finite relative.stf-lattices. We treat a large class of varieties of distributive-lattice-ordered algebras. For these varieties, the finite algebras can be described dually in terms of finite ordered sets, so that order-theoretic results and techniques prove valuable.

The non-linear Schrödinger systems arise from many important physical branches. In this paper, employing the ‘I-method’, we prove the global-in-time well-posedness for a coupled non-linear Schrödinger system in Hs(n) when n = 2, s > 4/7 and n = 3, s > 5/6, respectively, which extends the results of J. Colliander, M. Keel, G. Staffilani, H. Takaoka and T. Tao (Almost conservation laws and global rough solutions to a nonlinear Schrödinger equation, Math Res. Lett. 9, 2002, 659–682) to the system.

Questions about polynomials can be turned into questions about matrices by associating with the polynomial

(over an arbitrary field) its companion matrix

which has p/an as its characteristic polynomial. This technique is often used in stability theory, as indicated in [1]; companion matrices also occur in the theory of the rational canonical form.

In this paper, we introduce and study the Gorenstein relative homology theory for unbounded complexes of modules over arbitrary associative rings, which is defined using special Gorenstein flat precovers. We compare the Gorenstein relative homology to the Tate/unbounded homology and get some results that improve the known ones.

The main result in this paper, contained in Theorem 1, is a generalisation of the inequality of the arithmetic-geometric means. A result of a similar character has been proved by Siegel (2). The present result gives an improvement in the inequality in the case when the variables involved are not all distinct, whereas Siegel's result does not. The theorem is used in § 3 to obtain a result in connection with totally real and positive algebraic integers.

We prove that all the pure states of the reduced C*-algebra of a free group on an uncountable set of generators are *-automorphism equivalent and extract some consequences of this fact.

Regular maps, that is, graph embeddings with the ‘highest level’ of orientation-preserving symmetry, can be identified with two-generator presentations of groups G of the form 〈x, y; xm = y2 = (xy)n = … = 1〉; the parameters m and n are the valence and the covalence of the map, respectively. The element j ∈ Zm* is an exponent of such a map if the assignments x ↦ xj and y ↦ y extend to an automorphism of G. The element −1 is an exponent if and only if the map is reflexible, that is, isomorphic to its mirror image. Non-trivial exponents, j ≠ ±1, induce automorphisms of the underlying graph, which are not map automorphisms but can nevertheless be considered as ‘external symmetries’ of the map. In this paper we show with the help of residual finiteness of triangle groups that for any given m, n≥3 such that 1/m + 1/n ≤ 1/2, there exist infinitely many finite, reflexible and regular maps of valence m and covalence n with no non-trivial exponent.

Let S be a semigroup and let be an S-graded ring. Rs = 0 for all but finitely many elements s ∈ S1, then R is said to have finite support. In this paper we concern ourselves with the question of whether a graded ring R with finite support inherits a given ring theoretic property from the homogeneous subrings Re corresponding to idempotent semigroup elements e.

It is proved that if the normal closure of every element of a group G has rank at most r, then the derived subgroup of G has r-bounded rank.

The main aim of this article is to discuss the relationship between Pontryagin duality and pro-objects. The basic idea arises from K. H. Hofmann's articles [7] and [8] where it is shown that the elementary abelian (Lie) groups are “dense” in the category of locally compact hausdorff abelian groups.

A vector lattice W is boundedly complete when each subset {aj:j ∊ J} of W which is bounded above by an element of W has a least upper bound in W. The least upper bound of {aj:j ∊ J} is denoted by and the greatest lower bound by whenever these exist.

Much work has been carried out on the classification of finite simple groups in terms of the structures of centralisers of involutions. However, it is sometimes the case that these classification results cannot be applied to particular problems even although information is available about one conjugacy class of involutions. The trouble is that information about the other classes can be almost non-existent. In this paper we deal with a situation where character theory can be employed to give a strong connection between the orders of centralisers of different classes of involutions, enabling information about one class to be used to give information about other classes. We prove the following result.
