Let C denote Cayley's algebra defined over the field of rational numbers. This paper contains a simple characterization of arithmetics of C in terms of a given basis i0 = 1, i1, i2, …, i7. We deduce that certain of the arithmetics of C are isomorphic. The result that the maximal arithmetics are isomorphic is also contained in the work of van der Blij and Springer [2].

There is a commutative algebra of differential-difference operators, acting on polynomials on , associated with the reflection group B 2. This paper presents an integral transform which intertwines this algebra, allowing one free parameter, with the algebra of partial derivatives. The method of proof depends on properties of a certain class of balanced terminating hypergeometric series of 4 F 3-type. These properties are in the form of recurrence and contiguity relations and are proved herein.

A group is called a T-group if all its subnormal subgroups are normal. It is proved here that if G is a periodic (generalized) soluble group in which all subnormal subgroups of infinite rank are normal, then either G is a T-group or it has finite rank. It follows that if G is an arbitrary group whose Fitting subgroup has infinite rank, then G has the property T if and only if all its subnormal subgroups of infinite rank are normal.

Since all the semigroups considered in this paper are commutative, we shall use the terms “semigroup” and “group” where we actually mean “commutative semigroup” and “commutative group”. Some basic results from the theory of semigroups are required and will be used without explicit mention; these results may be found in [1, § 4.3]. We shall denote the additive semigroups of integers, positive integers, negative integers, positive rationals by Z, Z+, Z-, Q+ respectively.

A topological space is called a uqu space [10] if it admits a unique quasi-uniformity. Answering a question [2, Problem B, p. 45] of P. Fletcher and W. F. Lindgren in the affirmative we show in [8] that a topological space X is a uqu space if and only if every interior-preserving open collection of X is finite. (Recall that a collection ℒ of open sets of a topological space is called interior-preserving if the intersection of an arbitrary subcollection of ℒ is open (see e.g. [2, p. 29]).) The main step in the proof of this result in [8] shows that a topological space in which each interior-preserving open collection is finite is a transitive space. (A topological space is called transitive (see e.g. [2, p. 130]) if its fine quasi-uniformity has a base consisting of transitive entourages.) In the first section of this note we prove that each hereditarily compact space is transitive. The result of [8] mentioned above is an immediate consequence of this fact, because, obviously, a topological space in which each interior-preserving open collection is finite is hereditarily compact; see e.g. [2, Theorem 2.36]. Our method of proof also shows that a space is transitive if its fine quasi-uniformity is quasi-pseudo-metrizable. We use this result to prove that the fine quasi-uniformity of a T1 space X is quasi-metrizable if and only if X is a quasi-metrizable space containing only finitely many nonisolated points. This result should be compared with Proposition 2.34 of [2], which says that the fine quasi-uniformity of a regular T1 space has a countable base if and only if it is a metrizable space with only finitely many nonisolated points (see e.g. [11] for related results on uniformities). Another by-product of our investigations is the result that each topological space with a countable network is transitive.

There exist several different approaches to the problem of solving dual integral equations involving Bessel Functions [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,7], and Erdelyi and Sneddon in a recent paper [8] have shown that the introduction of certain operators occurring in the theory of fractional integration enables the relationships between the various methods to be clearly demonstrated. For dual integral equations other than those involving Bessel Functions the operators introduced by Erdélyi and Sneddon are not always the appropriate ones to use and it seems to be of interest to consider this more general type of situation.

The semigroups of unital extensions of separable C*-algebras come in two flavours: a strong and a weak version. By the unital Ext-groups, we mean the groups of invertible elements in these semigroups. We use the unital Ext-groups to obtain K-theoretic classification of both unital and non-unital extensions of C*-algebras, and in particular we obtain a complete K-theoretic classification of full extensions of UCT Kirchberg algebras by stable AF algebras.

Jacobson said a a right ideal would be called bounded if it contained a non-zero ideal, and Faith said a ring would be called strongly right bounded if every non-zero right ideal were bounded. In this paper we introduce a condition that is a generalisation of strongly bounded rings and insertion-of-factors-property (IFP) rings, calling a ring strongly right AB if every non-zero right annihilator is bounded. We first observe the structure of strongly right AB rings by analysing minimal non-commutative strongly right AB rings up to isomorphism. We study properties of strongly right AB rings, finding conditions for strongly right AB rings to be reduced or strongly right bounded. Relating to Ramamurthi's question (i.e. Are right and left SF rings von Neumann regular?), we show that a ring is strongly regular if and only if it is strongly right AB and right SF, from which we may generalise several known results. We also construct more examples of strongly right AB rings and counterexamples to several naturally raised situations in the process.

We give characterisations of the linear relations that are injective and open (respectively, almost open with dense range) in terms of the stability of the nullity (respectively, of the deficiency). Results of Mbekhta about bounded operators in Banach spaces (J. Operator Theory35 (1996), 191–201) are covered.

The use of graphs in the study of groups is well-established. In this paper, we wish to indicate how certain graph-like objects may be used in a similar way. A diagram is a pseudograph which may have some free edges, i.e. edges with just one end.

Let k be an algebraic number field and Ck its ideal class group (in the wider sense). Suppose K is a finite extension of k. Then we say that an ideal class of k capitulates in K if this class is in the kernel of the homomorphism

induced by extension of ideals from k to K (See Section 2 below). In [4], Iwasawa gives examples of real quadratic number fields, with distinct primes Pi ≡ 1 (mod 4), for which all the ideal classes of the 2-class group, Ck,2 (the 2-Sylow subgroup of Ck), capitulate in an unramified quadratic extension of k. In these examples, Ck,2 is abelian of type (2,2), i.e. isomorphic to ℤ/2ℤ×ℤ/2ℤ and so all four ideal classes capitulate.

If E is a Hausdorff barrelled space, which does not already have its finest locally convex topology, then the continuous dual E′ may be enlarged within the algebraic dual E*. Robertson and Yeomans [10] have recently investigated whether E can retain the barrelled property under such enlargements. Whereas finite-dimensional enlargements of the dual preserve barrelledness, they have shown that this is not always so for countable-dimensional enlargements E′+M. In fact, if E contains an infinitedimensional bounded set, there always exists a countable-dimensional M for which the Mackey topology τ(E, E′+M) is not barrelled [10, Theorem 2].

For X a complex Banach space and U an open subset of the complex plane С, let O (U, X) denote the space of analytic X- valued functions defined on U. This is a Frechet space when endowed with the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets, and the space X may be viewed as simply the constants in O(U, X). Every bounded operator T on X induces a continuous mapping TU on O(U, X) given by (Tuf)(λ) = (λ – T)f(λ) for every f e O(U, X) and λ e U. Corresponding to each closed F ⊂ С there is also an associated analytic subspace XT(F) = X ∩ ran(7c//F). For an arbitrary T e L(X), the spaces XT(F) are T-invariant, generally non-closed linear manifolds in X.

Let $G$ be a compact $p$-adic analytic group and let $\Lambda_G$ be its completed group algebra with coefficient ring the $p$-adic integers $\mathbb{Z}_p$. We show that the augmentation ideal in $\Lambda_G$ of a closed normal subgroup $H$ of $G$ is localisable if and only if $H$ is finite-by-nilpotent, answering a question of Sujatha. The localisations are shown to be Auslander-regular rings with Krull and global dimensions equal to dim $H$. It is also shown that the minimal prime ideals and the prime radical of the $\mathbb{F}_p$-version $\Omega_G$ of $\Lambda_G$ are controlled by $\Omega_{\Delta^+}$, where $\Delta^+$ is the largest finite normal subgroup of $G$. Finally, we prove a conjecture of Ardakov and Brown [1].

A positive integer nis called a square-full integer if p2 divides n whenever p is a prime divisor of n. For x > 1 we denote by Q(x) the number of square-full integers not exceeding x. Bateman and Grosswald [1] proved that

Brannan's conjecture says that for 0 <α,β≤1, |x|=1, and n∈N one has |A2n−1(α,β,x)|≤|A2n−1(α,β,1)|, whereWe prove this for the case α=β, and also prove a differentiated version of the Brannan conjecture. This has applications to estimates for Gegenbauer polynomials and also to coefficient estimates for univalent functions in the unit disk that are ‘starlike with respect to a boundary point’. The latter application has previously been conjectured by H. Silverman and E. Silvia. The proofs make use of various properties of the Gauss hypergeometric function.

An integer n\geq2 is said to be a genus of a finite group G if there is a compact Riemann surface of genus n on which G acts as a group of automorphisms. In this paper, formulae are given for the minimum genus, minimum stable genus and the gap sequence, i.e., the (finite) set of non-genera, for a split metacyclic group of order pq, where p and q are primes. This information completely determines the genus spectrum for such groups.

We consider the divisibility of the class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields , where q is an odd prime number, k and n are positive integers. Suppose that k ≡ 1 mod 2 or n ≢ 3 mod 6. We show that the class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields ≠ are divisible by n for q ≡ 3 mod 8. This is a generalization of the result of Kishi for imaginary quadratic fields when k ≡ 1 mod 2 or n ≢ 3 mod 6. We also show that the class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields ≠ are divisible by n for q ≡ 1 mod 4 and the class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields ≠ are divisible by n for q ≡ 7 mod 8.

We give a simple proof of a statement extending Fu's (J.H.G. Fu, Erratum to ‘some remarks on legendrian rectiable currents’, Manuscripta Math. 113(3) (2004), 397–401) result: ‘If Ω is a set of locally finite perimeter in ℝ2, then there is no function f ∈ C1(ℝ2) such that ∇f(x1, x2) = (x2, 0) at a.e. (x1, x2) ∈ Ω’. We also prove that every measurable set can be approximated arbitrarily closely in L1 by subsets that do not contain enhanced density points. Finally, we provide a new proof of a Poincaré-type lemma for locally finite perimeter sets, which was first stated by Delladio (S. Delladio, Functions of class C1 subject to a Legendre condition in an enhanced density set, to appear in Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana).
