One of the few detailed records of Mesozoic deep-water sedimentation and volcanism preserved along the tectonically emplaced Arabian continental margin is from the Baer–Bassit region of northern Syria. South-Tethyan units there occur as blocks, broken formation and disrupted thrust sheets within the Bear–Bassit Melange. Two overall composite successions are identified. The first comprises mainly sedimentary successions ranging from Late Triassic to Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) in age. The second is dominated by Middle Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous alkaline/ per-alkaline volcanic and minor intrusive igneous rocks. The extrusives are intercalated with radiolarian sediments and capped by Cenomanian ferromanganese-rich pelagic limestone. Facies comparisons and the regional setting suggest that the Triassic to Cenomanian, mainly sedimentary units, formed in deep water near the base of the slope of the Arabian continental margin. The contrasting volcanogenic successions developed in a more distal off-margin setting. Regional comparisons (e.g. with southwestern Cyprus and southwestern Turkey) suggest that continental break-up to form a South-Tethyan oceanic basin took place in Late Triassic time, associated with alkaline volcanism. Similar alkaline volcanism of Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous age could reflect the activity of a mantle plume beneath the Arabian plate. Overall, sedimentation was mainly controlled by an interplay of post-rift thermal subsidence, plume-related uplift, siliceous oceanic productivity, climatic change and eustatic sea-level change. The South-Tethyan marginal to oceanic units in northern Syria were detached from an inferred oceanic basement in latest Cretaceous time, emplaced onto the Arabian continental margin, then transgressed by Maastrichian and younger autochthonous successions.

The c. 15000 km2, c. 2 Ga Kunene complex of southern Angola and northern Namibia is one of the world's largest occurrences of anorthositic rocks, rivalled only perhaps by the Lac St Jean massif of the Grenville Province in Quebec. We report here the results of a detailed field and laboratory study of a 100 km2 area in the northern part of the complex. Coarse grained (av. 1–2 cm) anorthosite and leucotroctolite are the predominant rock types, although colour index varies between 0 and 50, averaging about 10. Ultramafic rocks are totally absent. Typical mineralogy is: plagioclase (An57–76) + olivine(Fo64–71) + orthopyroxene(En65–74) + clinopyroxene ± Fe—Ti oxides ± apatite. Textures are dominantly massive, although weak, impersistent, magmatic lamination with nearvertical dip and unsystematic strike is also present. Other magmatic features include plagioclase and orthopyroxene megacrysts, block structure, mortar texture, and anorthositic dykes. Metamorphic effects are minimal or absent. All of these attributes are similar to those found in typical massif-type anorthosites. Since comparable features are present over large areas elsewhere in the complex, we suggest that Kunene should be considered analogous to a large, composite, massif-type anorthositic intrusive complex, rather than to a large, single or composite mafic layered intrusion such as Bushveld, as has been previously suggested or assumed. This interpretation is supported by satellite imagery, which shows the outlines of several individual anorthositic plutons, one of which clearly encompasses our field area.

Radiometric ages for undated parts of the volcanic succession and intrusions in West Greenland were obtained by the 40Ar–39Ar incremental heating method. Acceptable crystallization ages were obtained for 27 samples. Combined with published results the new data provide a volcanic stratigraphy correlatable throughout the Nuussuaq Basin. The thick onshore volcanic pile consists of four widespread formations: 62.5–61 Ma picrites (Vaigat Formation), 61–60 Ma depleted basalts (Maligât Formation and the Hellefisk-1 well), 60–58 Ma less-depleted basalts (Svartenhuk Formation) and 56–54 Ma enriched basalts (Naqerloq Formation). Two local successions comprise 53.5 Ma alkali basalts (Erqua Formation) and 38.7 Ma transitional basalts (Talerua Member). A central volcano developed on Ubekendt Ejland, leading to the Sarqâta qáqâ gabbro-granophyre intrusion at 57–55 Ma. Pre-break-up volcanism took place further south as early as 64–63 Ma. The offshore volcanic succession most probably comprises the known onshore succession plus some younger lavas. The change in spreading direction near the Paleocene–Eocene boundary took place west of the Nuussuaq Basin c. 56.2 Ma. Some tectonomagmatic events are correlatable across the entire North Atlantic Igneous Province. A quiescent 58–56 Ma period correlates with similar periods in East Greenland and the Faroes, and the Naqerloq Formation is coeval with the Eocene basalts in East Greenland. The Paleocene and Eocene tholeiitic basalts are distinguishable chemically; in early Eocene time, mantle typical of the Iceland plume seems to have extended beneath the whole West Greenland margin as well as the central East Greenland margin.

The form and distribution of load-casts suggests a genetic connection with structures previously formed on the upper surface of the underlying bed. On analogy with salt-dome development, the growth of load-casts and associated flame-structures is attributed to the density contrast between upper and lower bands and differential loading caused by the projections and depressions formed by the upper-surface features. This hypothesis is the basis of a new classification of load-cast structures.

Cretaceous mafic dykes in Fujian province, SE China provide an opportunity to examine the nature of their mantle source and the secular evolution of the Mesozoic lithospheric mantle beneath SE China. The mafic rocks have SiO2 ranging from 47.42 to 55.40 wt %, Al2O3 from 14.0 wt % to 20.4 wt %, CaO from 4.09 to 11.7 wt % and total alkaline (K2O+Na2O) from 2.15 wt % to 6.59 wt %. Two types are recognized based on their REE and primitive mantle-normalized trace element patterns. Type-A is the dominant Mesozoic mafic rock type in SE China and is characterized by enrichment of light rare earth elements (LREE) ((La/Yb)n = 2.85–19.0) and arc-like trace element geochemistry. Type-P has relatively flat REE patterns ((La/Yb)n = 1.68–3.43) and primitive mantle-like trace element patterns except for enrichment of Rb, Ba and Pb. Type-A samples show EMII signatures on the Sr-Nd isotopic diagram, whereas type-P rocks have high initial 143Nd/144Nd ratios (0.5126–0.5128) relative to the type-A rocks (143Nd/144Nd = 0.5124–0.5127). The type-A rocks have 207Pb/204Pb ranging from 15.47 to 15.67 and 206Pb/204Pb from 18.26 to 18.52. All the type-A rocks show a negative correlation between 143Nd/144Nd and 206Pb/204Pb ratios and a positive relationship between 87Sr/86Sr and 206Pb/204Pb ratios, indicating mixing of a depleted mantle source and an EMII component. Geochemical modelling shows that the parental magmas were formed by 5–15 % partial melting of a spinel lherzolite, and contaminated by less than 1 % melt derived from subducted sediment. The type-P magmas were derived from a mantle source unmodified by subduction components. The wide distribution of type-A dykes in SE China suggests that subduction-modified lithospheric mantle was extensive beneath the Cathaysia Block. Geochemical differences between Mesozoic and Cenozoic mafic rocks indicate that lithospheric thinning beneath SE China occurred in two episodes: firstly by heterogeneous modification by subducted components in early Mesozoic times, and later by chemical–mechanical erosion related to convective upwelling of the asthenosphere during Cenozoic times.

The use of calcrete horizons as a means of assessing rates of sediment accretion in ancient alluvial sequences is reviewed. Any attempt to use such horizons in quantifying ancient alluvial deposition must appreciate that accurate data on rates of formation of Quaternary calcretes are limited. Such data show considerable variations in the rates and no reliable data exist at all for some calcrete types. The abundance of calcretes in the geological record warrants a new initiative to improve our understanding oftheir origins and rates of formation.

Both the deformation and rupture characteristics of rocks are related to geomechanics. In this paper, we identify the evaluation indexes related to coalbed methane (CBM) accumulation in strongly deformed strike-slip fault zones considering tectonics and fractures. We found that fault scale, the fault combination, the tectonic stress, the preservation conditions and fractures all have important effects on the CBM distribution. Areas near the large-scale opening faults are unfavourable to the preservation of coalbed methane. The distribution of gas wells with different capacities is influenced by tectonic extension and convergence. A 3D geomechanical method was used to analyse the influence of the ‘ribbon effect’ of strike-slip faults on the CBM distribution. Due to the influence of the ‘ribbon effect’, the tectonic stress presents a plane in situ stress heterogeneity, which in turn will affect the gas well productivity. We also calculated the integrated rupture rate (IF) to characterize the degree of tectonic fracture development in the target coal reservoir. The appropriate fracture development degree can improve the petrophysical properties of the coal reservoirs while maintaining good storage conditions, such that the gas wells can achieve a higher production capacity. This study is of great significance for the enrichment of the geomechanical theory of oil and gas exploration.

This paper reports new geochronological data from the island of Andros, one of the less-studied islands of the Cycladic blueschist belt in the central Aegean Sea. On Andros, two tectonic units can be distinguished, the Makrotantalon unit and the Lower unit, which are separated by a low-angle normal fault, related to large-scale regional extension. Mineral assemblages indicate greenschist-facies P–T conditions for the last metamorphic overprint of both units. In contrast to the structurally lower unit, unambiguous indications for an earlier high-pressure stage were not recognized in rocks collected above the tectonic contact. Owing to a polyphase metamorphic evolution and incomplete resetting of the Rb–Sr isotope system during overprinting, phengite geochronology indicates a wide range in dates between c. 104 and 21 Ma for the Makrotantalon unit, as observed in rocks of similar structural position elsewhere in the Cyclades. The new Rb–Sr data support the interpretation, but are not conclusive evidence, that tectonic slices within the hanging wall were affected by two periods of Cretaceous metamorphism (c. 100–90 Ma and c. 80–70 Ma) and a Miocene event (c. 21 Ma). Tectonic juxtaposition was accomplished around c. 21 Ma. The Lower unit is correlative with the Cycladic high-pressure occurrences. Rb–Sr phengite dating yielded the same range in ages as determined elsewhere in the region for white mica of high-pressure rocks (c. 50–40 Ma) and their overprinted, greenschist-facies derivatives (c. 23–21 Ma). An age gradient towards the tectonic contact with the overlying Makrotantalon unit is not developed. The new results fit well into the previously established chronological framework for the larger study area. Indications for regional differences in the timing of the HP stage and/or the greenschist-facies overprint have not yet been found.

The Miocene igneous rocks in the Basal Unit of the Lavrion area form part of the granitoid province of the central Aegean. Undeformed, subvertical dykes of quartz-syenite to granodiorite and granite porphyries, and a little deformed but variably altered granodiorite stock intrude metamorphic rocks of the Basal Unit. A 9.4 ± 0.3 Ma K–Ar age on feldspar for a dyke rock provides a minimum age for the igneous activity in the Basal Unit. East–west orientation of porphyry dykes is indicative of a regional extensional stress field with roughly north–south direction. Substantial extension in the Basal Unit after granodiorite emplacement is evident from widespread quartz veining associated with hydrothermal alteration of the granodiorite and the occurrence of mineralized tension gashes cutting the hydrothermally altered hornfelses. Final emplacement of the Blueschist Unit over the Basal Unit by extensional detachment post-dates contact metamorphism of the rocks surrounding the granodiorite. Geochemical diagrams show a continuous range of compositions from the dykes to the granodiorite. Radiogenic isotope compositions are compatible with a common magmatic source for the two lithologies. Elemental variations, as well as the considerable geochemical similarity of the dyke rocks to the Hercynian paragneiss of the central Cyclades, indicate that crustal melts were significant components during the evolution of the igneous rocks with fractional crystallization as an important process during later stages of evolution. The granodiorite displays geochemical signatures indicative of a significant mafic mantle-derived magma component.

Dykes of calc-alkaline lamprophyre cutting granite of the Hercynian Jebilet Massif of the Moroccan Meseta (western Morocco) contain crustal xenoliths. The xenoliths range in composition from mafic (cognate cumulates) and upper crustal granitic rocks through gneisses to middle crustal felsic granulites. SHRIMP U–Th–Pb zircon analyses of these rocks indicate that the dykes were likely intruded during Middle Triassic times (∼235 Ma), whereas the xenoliths contain zircons with concordant Carboniferous–Early Permian, Neoproterozoic and Palaeoproterozoic ages (280–328 Ma, c. 540–615 Ma, 700 Ma and ∼2000 Ma). The 280–328 Ma ages appear to record synchronous intrusive and high-grade (up to granulite facies) Variscan metamorphic events, suggesting that high-grade metamorphism may have facilitated the S-type granitic magmatism. On the other hand, the ∼540–615 Ma, 700 Ma and 2000 Ma ages correspond with Pan-African and Eburnian orogenic events recorded in the West African Craton. In a Triassic reconstruction, Morocco is juxtaposed against Nova Scotia (Canada), and some have proposed that the basement of the easternmost terrane (Meguma terrane) is a piece of the West African craton. However, lower crustal xenoliths from Devonian dykes (∼370 Ma) cutting the Meguma terrane have yielded Late Devonian, Neo- and Mesoproterozoic ages (378 Ma, 575–629 Ma, ∼880–1050 Ma and ∼1530 Ma). The presence of ∼1 Ga ages suggests that the basement of the Meguma terrane is Avalonian rather than West African, implying that in a Pangean reconstruction, the Rheic Ocean suture between NW Africa and Maritime Canada coincides with the Atlantic Ocean.

Low and very low grade metamorphism in a mudrock-dominated succession, ranging from Upper Cambrian to Wenlock, is characterized by the white mica (illite) crystallinity technique. Kubler indices indicate that grade ranges from late diagenetic to low epizonal. The prograde reaction most easily observed by XRD study is the progressive ordering of K/Na micas; diagnostic 2M1 polytypic reflections become recognizable at 0.4 Δ 2θ and strengthen as grade advances. Grade generally correlates with thickness of overburden in the > 9 km thick succession. However, strain exercises additionally a profound influence on grade, and the distribution of strain was related to décollement resulting from inhomogeneities and ductility contrasts within the succession. Strain energy is seen as an additional and important variable in the development of white mica crystallinity in slates. The distribution of metamorphic grade implies that the Lower Palaeozoic succession was augmented by several kilometres of Lower Devonian (Old Red Sandstone) strata at the metamorphic culmination. The culmination was syntectonic and represents an Acadian rather than an early diastathermal event. Subsequent dextral movement on the Bala Fault displaced the regional isocryst pattern by c. 4 km. Retrogressive smectite appears to be localized to the vicinity of the Bala Fault and is probably of Variscan age.

Calcareous algae make their first appearance near the base of the Tommotian. The oldest confirmed occurrences are of ?Gemma, Obruchevella and Renalcis in the Nemakit-Daldyn Horizon and late Yudomian of Siberia. A little higher in the sequence, in the Aldanocyathus sunnaginicus Zone of the earliest Tommotian, Angulocellularia, Bajanophyton, Batenevia, Botomaella, Girvanella, Hedstroemia, Korilophyton, Proaulopora, Subtifloria, and Tarthinia appear. Immediately above this, in the Dokidocyathus regularis Zone of the middle Tommotian, Chabakovia appears with the epiphytacean genera Epiphyton, Gordonophyton and Tubomorphophyton. There are only minor subsequent additions to this flora before the end of the Atdabanian. Kordephyton appears in the Dokidocyathus lenaicus Zone of the late Tommotian and Razumovskia in the early Atdabanian.

These fossils constitute three calcareous algae assemblages (CAA 1, 2, 3) characteristic of the Nemakit-Daldyn Horizon/late Yudomian, early Tommotian, and middle Tommotian/Atdabanian respectively. Most of the genera are long-ranging, but their rapid appearance and diversification near the base of the Tommotian repesents an important event in the history of calcareous algae and augments faunal data concerning evolution and biostratigraphy near the Precambrian/Cambrian boundary.

The brickearth of Pegwell Bay in Kent is identified as a true loess. It rests on solifluction deposits and frost-shattered rocks.

The incomplete Evros ophiolites in NE Greece form a NE–SW-oriented discontinuous belt in the Alpine orogen of the north Aegean. Field data, petrology and geochemistry are presented here for the intrusive section and associated mafic dykes of these ophiolites. Bodies of high-level isotropic gabbro and plagiogranite in the ophiolite suite are cross-cut by NE–SW-trending boninitic and tholeiitic–boninitic affinity dykes, respectively. The dykes fill tensile fractures or faults, which implies dyke emplacement in an extensional tectonic regime. The tholeiitic–transitional boninitic gabbro is REE- and HFS-depleted relative to N-MORB, indicating derivation from melting of a refractory mantle peridotite source. Associated boninitic dykes are slightly LREE-enriched, showing mineral and whole-rock geochemistry similar to the gabbro. The plagiogranite is a strongly REE-enriched high-silica trondhjemite, with textures and composition typical for an oceanic crust differentiate. Plagiogranite-hosted tholeiitic and transitional boninitic dykes are variably REE-enriched. Geochemical modelling indicates origin of the plagiogranite by up to 75 % fractional crystallization of basaltic magma similar to that producing the associated tholeiitic dykes. All mafic rocks have high LILE/HFSE ratios and negative Ta–Nb–Ti and Ce anomalies, typical for subduction zone-related settings. The mafic rocks show a similar trace-element character to the mafic lavas of an extrusive section in Bulgaria, suggesting they both form genetically related intrusive and extrusive suites of the Evros ophiolites. The field occurrence, the structural context, the petrology and geochemical signature of the studied magmatic assemblage provide evidence for its origin in a proto-arc (fore-arc) tectonic setting, thus tracing the early stages of the tectono-magmatic evolution of Jurassic arc-marginal basin system that has generated the supra-subduction type Evros ophiolites.

The end-Permian (c. 252 Ma) and end-Triassic (c. 201 Ma) mass-extinction events are commonly linked to the emplacement of the large igneous provinces of the Siberia Traps and Central Atlantic Magmatic Province, respectively. Accordingly, scenarios for both extinctions are increasingly convergent and cross-fertilization of ideas has become important. Here, we present a synthesis of extinction scenarios based on a critical assessment of the available palaeontological, sedimentological, geochemical and geophysical evidence. How similar were the extinction events, what gaps exist in our understanding and how can a comparison of the events enhance our understanding of each event individually? Our focus is on the most important proximate kill mechanisms including: climate change and atmospheric pollution; increased soil erosion, weathering and runoff; forest dieback and the spread of pathogens; and ocean temperature changes, anoxia and acidification. There is substantial evidence to suggest that very similar kill mechanisms acted upon late Permian as well as Late Triassic ecosystems, strengthening the hypothesis that the ultimate causes of the mass-extinction events were similar.

Weakly deformed, low grade, Lower Palaeozoic metasediments from central Wales contain abundant stack-like intergrowths of chlorite and white mica that closely resemble stacks described from the Devonian Hunsruckschiefer of West Germany; the Ordovician Martinsburg Slate, New Jersey, U.S.A.; and elsewhere. Several theories have been proposed to explain the origin of such stacks, including a detrital origin; strain-controlled growth of chlorite on a detrital mica nucleus; and strain-controlled intergrowth during metamorphism. None of these satisfactorily explains the central Wales stacks. A detrital origin is precluded by the presence of many stacks with shapes too delicate to have survived transportation, and a lack of hydrodynamic equivalence between the stacks and the clastic host grains. Features inconsistent with strain-controlled growth are constant alignment parallel to bedding but non-systematic orientation with respect to tectonic cleavage, their common occurrence in undeformed rocks, and petrographic evidence that they precede the tectonic cleavage. It is proposed that the stacks formed during diagenesis and low-grade metamorphism, and before the onset of deformation, through mimetic growth on a primary bedding fabric composed of clay minerals.

The present position of Sri Lanka and its past fit in Gondwanaland are investigated in relation to the development of the Indian Ocean. The 3 stages in the evolution of the Indian Ocean are shown to be controlled by fundamental NW, NS, and NE Precambrian lineament directions in Sri Lanka and South India. These older lineaments were rejuvenated in the Mesozoic–Tertiary to form oceanic transform faults which determined the phases of Indian Ocean floor spreading.

The Term “Cycle of Sedimentation” or “Cycle of Deposition” is not nearly so familiar in England as it is on the Continent. Whilst the teaching of the general principles forms part of most courses in geology, the application of these principles to actual successions in this country has been somewhat neglected. Attention has recently been drawn to the seasonal or rhythmic changes seen in some sediments, and to avoid confusion it is desirable to outline what is meant by the expression “Cycle of Sedimentation”.

A new permineralized fossil plant assemblage is described from volcaniclastic tuff collected in the Upper Permian (Wuchiapigian to Changhsingian) Xuanwei Formation at Shanjiaoshu mine, Guizhou Province, China. The assemblage is fragmentary but contains a small sphenopsid strobilus, a partial strobilus of a lepidodendralean lycopsid, pinnae of the filicalean fern Anachoropteris and a filicalean non-laminate fertile pinna rachis, the marattialean ferns Eoangiopteris, Scolecopteris and Psaronius, hooked stems of probable gigantopterid affinity, and two kinds of cardiocarpalean ovules. This represents the first indisputable evidence of Anachoropteris from the Permian of China, and contrasts with previous evidence from Europe and North America that indicates this genus became extinct during earliest Permian times. The assemblage highlights the persistence of plants from wetland communities and mire ecosystems into the Upper Permian of southern China, and adds further support to the presence of the Ameriosinian phytogeographical realm. This represents the first record of a plant assemblage preserved in volcaniclastic sediments from the Upper Permian of southern China, and in combination with other recently discovered plant assemblages in similar deposits in southern China, suggests volcanism to be an important factor in facilitating permineralized plant preservation in this realm. Although the source of the volcanism that produced the tuff is unknown, its age and location are consistent with the Emishan Large Igneous Province (LIP) of southwest China.
