We report the discovery of a dinosaur assemblage in the non-marine Late Maastrichtian of the Corbieres region of southern France; this allows the reconstruction of the succession of dinosaur faunas during the Maastrichtian in western Europe. An Early Maastrichtian fauna dominated by titanosaurid sauropods was replaced by a Late Maastrichtian assemblage dominated by hadrosaurs. This important faunal replacement seems to coincide with environmental changes (documented by sedimentological and palynological evidence) which have been linked to a marine regression during the Maastrichtian. This suggests that sea-level changes influenced the evolution of dinosaur faunas in Europe during the Late Cretaceous, but were not sufficient to cause the final extinction of dinosaurs, for which other causes must be sought.

Recent resurgence of interest in the Mesozoic rocks of SW and southern Cyprus necessitates redefinition of the Mesozoic sedimentary and igneous rocks in line with modern stratigraphical convention. Two fundamentally different rocks associations are present, the Troodos Complex, not redefined, a portion of late Cretaceous oceanic crust, and the Mamonia Complex, the tectonically dismembered remnants of a Mesozoic continental margin. Based on earlier work, the Mamonia Complex is divided into two groups, each subdivided into a number of subsidiary formations and members. The Ayios Photios Group is wholly sedimentary, and records the evolution of a late Triassic to Cretaceous inactive continental margin. The Dhiarizos Group represents Triassic alkalic volcanism and sedimentation adjacent to a continental margin. Several other formations not included in the two groups comprise sedimentary mélange and metamorphic rocks. The Troodos Complex possesses an in situ late Cretaceous sedimentary cover which includes two formations of ferromanganiferous pelagic sediments, radiolarites and volcaniclastic sandstones. The overlying Cainozoic calcareous units are not redefined here.

The southern Menderes Massif in southwest Turkey consists mainly of orthogneisses and overlying Palaeozoic–Middle Paleocene schists and marbles. The contact between the two distinct rock types is almost everywhere structural, herein named the southern Menderes shear zone: a S-facing, high-angle ductile shear zone that separates metamorphic rocks of differing grade. Although there is a consensus that the shear zone was associated with top-to-the-S–SSW shearing and is of Tertiary age, its origin and nature have been highly debated over the last decade. Some claim the contact is a thrust fault, while others have argued for an extensional shear zone. Integration of field and microstructural data (the identification of different fabrics, associated kinematics and overprinting relationships) with fission-track thermochronology and the P–T paths of the rocks above and below the shear zone, supports the conclusion that the southern Menderes shear zone is an extensional shear zone and not a thrust. The data are consistent with a model that the exhumation and cooling of the southern Menderes Massif occurred after a period of extensional deformation. Pervasive top-to-the-N–NNE high-temperature–medium-pressure ductile shear structures (D2 deformation) overprint an early HP event (D1 deformation). The subsequent top-to-the-S–SSW greenschist shear band foliation (D3 deformation) developed mostly around the orthogniess–schist contact and forms the most characteristic features of the massif. The top-to-the-N–NNE structures are attributed to the main Alpine constructional deformation that developed during back-thrusting of the Lycian nappes during the latest Palaeogene collision between the Sakarya continent and the Anatolide-Tauride platform across the Neotethyan Ocean. The top-to-the-S–SSW structures are interpreted to be the result of the exhumation of the massif during the activity of the southern Menderes shear zone. The presence of these two distinct fabrics with differing kinematics suggests that the southern Menderes shear zone operated as a top-to-the-N–NNE thrust fault during early Alpine contractional deformation but was later reactivated with an opposite sense of movement (top-to-the-S–SSW) during subsequent Oligocene–Miocene extensional collapse.

The Kızıldağ (Hatay) ophiolite in Turkey represents remnants of the southern Neotethyan ocean and is characterized by a complete ocean lithospheric section. It formed in a fore-arc setting above a N-dipping intraoceanic subduction zone, and represents the undeformed, more northerly part of the same thrust sheet that also forms the Baer–Bassit ophiolite to the south. The ophiolite was emplaced southwards from the southerly Neotethyan ocean in Maastrichtian time. U–Pb and Sm–Nd dates are used to constrain the crystallization age and duration of magmatic activity of the Kızıldağ ophiolite. U–Pb dating yielded ages of 91.7 ± 1.9 Ma for a plagiogranite and 91.6 ± 3.8 Ma for a cumulate gabbro. The cumulate gabbro also yielded a Sm–Nd isochron age of 95.3 ± 6.9 Ma. The measured ages suggest that the oceanic crust of the Kızıldağ ophiolite formed in a maximum time period of 6 Ma, and that the plagiogranite may have formed later than the gabbroic section. The U–Pb zircon ages from the Kızıldağ ophiolite and the cooling age of a metamorphic sole beneath the Baer–Bassit ophiolite are indistinguishable within the analytical uncertainties. This indicates the presence of young and hot oceanic lithosphere at the time of intraoceanic subduction/thrusting in the southern Neotethys. The U–Pb zircon ages from the Kızıldağ, the Troodos and the Semail ophiolites overlap within analytical uncertainties, suggesting that these ophiolites are contemporaneous and genetically and tectonically related within the same Late Cretaceous southern Neotethyan ocean.

Comagmatic granitic and volcanic rocks are divided into two types depending on whether or not the primary magma contains restite crystals. Examples of both of these types are discussed from the Lachlan Fold Belt of southeastern Australia.

Volcanic rocks containing restite phenocrysts are chemically identical to the associated plutonic rocks containing the same amount of restite. The more mafic granitic rocks correspond in composition to the most phenocryst-rich volcanics (up to 60% phenocrysts), and thus cannot be cumulate rocks produced by fractional crystallization, but must represent true magma compositions. These restite-bearing magmas result from partial melting in a source region up to the rheological critical melt percentage, which we estimate to be about 40% in the S-type Hawkins Suite of volcanics.

Melts which escape their restite at the source, before the critical melt percentage is reached, are able to undergo fractional crystallization in high level magma chambers by heterogeneous crystallization on chamber walls. In this case volcanic products from the top of the chamber are more felsic than the plutonic products, the plutonics are crystal cumulates and the volcanics are composed of the complementary fractionated liquid. Those phenocrysts present in the volcanics were probably eroded from the chamber walls and are less abundant (< 20%) than in the restite-retentive volcanic products.

Metabentonites occur extensively in the Moffat Shale Group of the Southern Uplands of Scotland. At Dob's Linn 135 metabentonite beds, 1–50 cm thick, occur in Ashgill to Llandovery strata, representing an aggregate thickness of 6 m of compacted ash accumulated over approximately 25 Ma. The metabentonites are characterized by relatively high concentrations of trace elements, including Ba, Cs, Hf, Nb, Rb, Ta, Th, U, Y, Zr and REEs, which were inherited from evolved vitric ash. Immobile trace element data indicate that a spectrum of silicic ash compositions accumulated, ranging from subalkaline to mildly peralkaline. In the late Ordovician N. gracilis to G. persculptus biozones, subalkaline ash falls predominated, whereas peralkaline ash falls predominated in the Llandovery (Silurian) P. acuminatus to M. convolutes biozones, giving way to predominantly subalkaline ash falls during accumulation of the M. sedgwickii to R. maximus biozones. Changeovers in the dominant ash types are marked by increased proportions of ash. The magmas from which the ash types evolved were generated in an ensialic arc transitional to a back-arc setting, and involved attenuated sialic crust and mantle characterized by variable depletion in HFS elements. Lithological, petrological and REE characteristics suggest that the Moffat Shale Group is not exclusively pelagic in origin and probably accumulated in a back-arc basin bordering an ensialic arc terrane.

This paper provides a brief outline of the current, detailed inter-disciplinary work on the Xiaoyangquiao section, trying to expose all the aspects for reference tied to the Global Single Stratigraphic Point (GSSP) Concept for defining the Cambrian–Ordovician Boundary. The 45 m critical interval of this section outcrops very well along the steep bank of a stream and is free from folding, faulting, intrusions, and has not been affected by weathering. Colour alternation of conodonts and acritarchs, and crystallinity indices of illite all indicate a maximum thermal grade of 100 °C. The lithofacies, being of great lateral persistence for a hundred kilometres, consists mainly of a rhythmical sequence of lime mudstone and shales deposited in a moderately deep outer shelf environment of quiet water, well below the normal storm wave base. Chemical investigation of the rocks demonstrates strong positive correlation between A12O3 content and those of K2O, MgO, Fe2O3, TiO2, Be, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn and Ba, indicating these components are tied to the clay fractions. A stable depositional environment is demonstrated by the uniform chemistries through the boundary interval. Close to the boundary itself P2O5 contents are low, indicating continuous sedimentation at fairly substantial rates.

The major biological events, the biostratigraphic framework, and the stratigraphic range of conodont, graptolite, trilobite, and acritarch taxa are illustrated briefly with diagrams. Following the majority views of the Calgary Plenary Session, the boundary level is to be chosen at a point marked by the First Appearance Datum (FAD) of the selected conodont taxon or taxa in the vicinity of the level close to, but below, the first influx of nematophorous graptolites. The following four points marked by the incoming of conodont taxon or taxa are recommended for consideration of the ‘Golden Spike'‘: (1) FAD of Cordylodus intermedius at 5.28 m below the first influx of nematophorous graptolites; (2) FAD of Hirsutodontus simpler–Cordylodus drucei–Albiconus postcostatus at 5.23 m; (3) FAD of Semiacontiodus lavadamensis–Utahconus utahensis–Monocostodus sevierensis at 3.85 m; (4) FAD of Cordylodus lindstromi at 2.23 m. For the following reasons the FAD of H. simplex–C. drucei–A. postcostatus is favoured: (1) the taxa are all distinct and widely dispersed; (2) intensive evolutionary change took place in conodonts, graptolites, trilobites and acritarchs prior to or after this point; all the fossil groups occur together, providing correlation with many regions throughout the world; (3) the point is in a position between the previously widely accepted boundary levels based on graptolites and trilobites; (4) the proposed point lies within a thin, laterally persistent, rhythmical sequence. The FAD of Cordylodus lindstromi is also a favourable point, sharing many advantages mentioned above. But this point is less satisfactory in being defined by the FAD of a single taxon C. lindstromi which also has an extremely small population size.

An isochron age of 500.7 ± 7.4 Ma is determined from clay fractions of mudstones 8.5 m below the proposed point by means of the Rubidium–Strontium method.

The ɛND signature determined from conodonts, trilobites hyolithids and acrotretid brachiopods has a mean value of −6.7, comparable with that of the coeval oceanic water mass occupying southeastern North America and Europe, and indicating that northeastern China bordered the same ocean. The mean Tdm model age determined was 1.26 Ga at the time of sedimentation, compatible with the mean Tdm model age of approximately 1.1 Ga for the Pacific Ocean today. The relatively low value of the Tdm model age indicates a substantial input from young orogenic volcanic island arcs and terranes.

We report U–Pb electron microprobe (zircon and monazite) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) U–Pb (zircon) ages from a granulite-facies metapelite and a garnet–biotite gniess from Chittikara, a classic locality within the Trivandrum Block of southern India. The majority of the electron-microprobe data on zircons from the metapelite define apparent ages between 1500 and 2500 Ma with a prominent peak at 2109±22 Ma, although some of the cores are as old as 3070 Ma. Zircon grains with multiple age zoning are also detected with 2500–3700 Ma cores, 1380–1520 mantles and 530–600 Ma outer rims. Some homogeneous and rounded zircon cores yielded late Neoproterozoic ages that suggest that deposition within the Trivandrum Block belt was younger than 610 Ma. The outermost rims of these grains are characterized by early Cambrian ages suggesting metamorphic overgrowth at this time. The apparent ages of monazite grains from this locality reveal multiple provenance and polyphase metamorphic history, similar to those of the zircons. In a typical case, Palaeoproterozoic cores (1759–1967 Ma) are enveloped by late Neoproterozoic rims (562–563 Ma), which in turn are mantled by an outermost thin Cambrian rim (∼515 Ma). PbO v. ThO*2 plots for monazites define broad isochrons, with cores indicating a rather imprecise age of 1913±260 Ma (MSWD=0.80) and late Neoproterozoic/Cambrian cores as well as thin rims yielding a well-defined isochron with an age of 557±19 Ma (MSWD=0.82). SIMS U–Pb isotopic data on zircons from the garnet–biotite gneiss yield a combined core/rim imprecise discordia line between 2106±37 Ma and 524±150 Ma. The data indicate Palaeoproterozoic zircon formation with later partial or non-uniform Pb loss during the late Neoproterozoic/Cambrian tectonothermal event. The combined electron probe and SIMS data from the metapelite and garnet–biotite gneiss at Chittikara indicate that the older zircons preserved in the finer-grained metapelite protolith have heterogeneous detrital sources, whereas the more arenaceous protolith of the garnet–biotite gniess was sourced from a single-aged terrane. Our data suggest that the metasedimentary belts in southern India may have formed part of an extensive late Neoproterozoic sedimentary basin during the final amalgamation of the Gondwana supercontinent.

The c. 1.1 Ga Kgwebe metavolcanic rocks exposed in the northwest of Botswana are late Kibaran rocks. They represent a bimodal suite of Within-Plate low titanium-phosphorus (LTP) continental tholeiites and post-orogenic Within-Plate high-K rhyolites. The chemical compositions of the Kgwebe mafic rocks are characterized by low values of Ce/Pb (<10) and high La/Nb ratios (average c. 2, maximum 4). Mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB)-normalized spidergrams show marked enrichment in mobile elements (Sr, K, Rb, Ba) and negative anomalies in Nb. These features suggest they may have originated in a mantle, enriched during a previous subduction event. The Kgwebe metarhyolites are marked by Y>60 ppm, Sr/Y<1, Rb/Th>20 and high K-contents. They cannot therefore be the product of melting of sediments or a subducting slab. It is inferred that they represent felsic magmas resulting from melting of Mesoproterozoic (Kibaran) calcalkaline rocks underplated in the middle and/or lower crust. The Kgwebe bimodal metavolcanic rocks pre-date the Neoproterozoic Ghanzi Group rocks which are correlated with the lower part of the Damara sequence. The chemical composition and field relations suggest that these metavolcanic rocks were emplaced during a late orogenic collision-associated extensional collapse. This collapse affected a crust thickened during the Kibaran orogeny in the Namaqua-Natal Belt of southwest Africa.

Subtidal columnar stromatolites up to 2.5 m high near Lee Stocking Island in the Exuma Cays, Bahamas, have surface mats approximately equally composed of algae and cyanobacteria. The stromatolites are composed of fine–medium oöid and peloid sand. This sediment is supplied to the growing stromatolite surfaces by strong tidal currents which lift grains into suspension and sweep migrating dunes over the columns. The algae include an unidentified filamentous chlorophyte, and numerous diatom species mostly belonging to Mastogloia, Nitzschia and Navicula. The dominant cyanobacteria are two oscillatoriacean species, both probably belonging to Schizothrix. Trapping of sediment is mainly effected by the unidentified chlorophyte which is veneered by epiphytic diatoms. Grains are bound into a mucilaginous mat composed of diatoms and cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria alone would not be able to trap and bind coarse sediment so effectively in this environment. In being coarse-grained and having a significant eualgal component to their mats, these stromatolites are similar to subtidal columnar stromatolites at Shark Bay, Western Australia. The Lee Stocking stromatolites are physically stressed by high velocity tidal currents and mobile sediment. The Shark Bay stromatolites are stressed by hypersalinity. In both cases stress deters grazers, encrusters and bioeroders. These coarse-grained eualgal stromatolites contrast with micritic and predominantly prokaryotic stromatolites of most Recent marine environments, and are not analogues for most pre-Phanerozoic stromatolites. They appear to be a response to changing stromatolitic mat components in the Cenozoic.

Collision-related rocks intrude metamorphic rocks overthrust by ophiolitic units to make up the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex. A wide variety of rock types were produced by the latest Cretaceous magmatism in the complex. These rocks can be divided into three distinct units: (1) calc-alkaline (Ağaçören, Behrekdağ, Cefalıkdağ, Çelebi, Ekecikdağ, Halaçlı, Karamadazı, Kösefakılı, Terlemez, Üçkapılı, Yozgat); (2) sub-alkaline (Baranadağ); and (3) alkaline (Atdere, Davulalan, Eğrialan, Hamit, İdişdağı, Karaçayır). The calc-alkaline rocks are metaluminous/peraluminous I- to S-type plutons ranging from monzodiorite to granite. The sub-alkaline rocks are metaluminous I-type plutons ranging from monzonite to granite. The alkaline rocks are metaluminous to peralkaline plutons, predominantly A-type, ranging from foid-bearing monzosyenite to granite. These plutons crystallized under varying pressures (5.3–2.6 kbar) and a wide range of temperatures (858–698 °C) from highly oxidized magmas (log fO2 −17 to −12). All intrusive rocks display enrichment in LILE and LREE compare to HFSE and have high 87Sr/86Sr and low 143Nd/144Nd ratios. These characteristics indicate that these rocks are derived from a mantle source containing large subduction components, and have experienced assimilation coupled with fractional crystallization (AFC) during uprise through crust. The coexistence of calc-alkaline and alkaline magmatism in the complex may be ascribed to mantle source heterogeneity before collision. Either thermal perturbation of the metasomatized lithosphere by delamination of the thermal boundary layer or removal of a subducted plate (slab breakoff) are the likely mechanisms for the initiation of the collision-related magmatism in the complex.

Field studies on the island of Elba and seismic lines from the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy, indicate that major extensional displacements were accommodated along east-dipping low-angle detachment faults. The rifting and subsidence in the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea basin have followed convergence and collision of the Corso-Sardinian block and the Apulian microplate. This collisional episode produced the Northern Apennines fold-and-thrust belt. Major extensional faults cut down-section through the stratigraphy and pre-existing west-dipping thrust faults. West-dipping thrusts can also be reactivated and form antithetic faults to the east-dipping detachments. Brittle deformation conditions predominated during the extensional phase. The geometry, internal structure and the fabrics (brittle and penetrative) associated with a well-exposed low-angle extensional detachment in Elba are presented in this paper. A geometrical model for the brittle extensional faulting is presented in which regional extension was accommodated on a system consisting of two sets of simultaneously active antithetic faults. The east-dipping detachment faults appear to have started at steeper angles, based on field and seismic observations, and rotated counter-clockwise to lower dips. Due to this rotation, and for space accommodation, antithetic west-dipping faults formed and rotated clockwise. A tectonic model is proposed whereby slowing of the convergence between Apulia and Corsica, as well as Tethys oceanic crust and Apulian crust subduction, led to the delamination of the Apulian litho-spheric mantle away from the crust. Accompanying asthenospheric upwelling and intrusion at the crust—mantle interface beneath the Tyrrhenian Sea caused late orogenic crustal stretching in the Northern Apennines internal zone.

The hot emplacement of the Ronda peridotites (Betic Cordilleras) developed a dynamothermal aureole and partial melts that led to the intrusion of granite dykes in the peridotites. Previous geochronological data place rather broad limits for this event between 22 and 19 Ma. Analyses of neocrystalline zircon rims from large zircon populations yield a U–Pb SHRIMP age of 22.3±0.7 Ma for the dynamothermal aureole formation, and intrusion ages of granite dykes between 22.6±1.8 and 21.5±3.8 support that conclusion. Therefore, these new ages provide a more robust constraint on the hot emplacement of the Ronda peridotites at middle crustal levels.

A new geological map, mostly subcrop, of the Brabant Massif is presented, based on a revised lithostratigraphy of the outcrop area and on recently acquired palaeontological and lithological data from boreholes in the concealed area. New interpretations of magnetic and gravity data are used to extend the lithostratigraphical units into areas with few or no boreholes. A structural model of the western, northern and southern parts of the Brabant Massif is presented. The main anticlinal axis plunges towards the west-northwest, its core comprising Upper Precambrian (?) to Lower Cambrian terrigenous rocks which outcrop in the southeast. To the north of the main axis, younger rocks appear in regular succession, but to the southwest this picture is complicated by the occurrence of a second anticlinal structure and by a subparallel magmatic arc.

Metabasalts of the Upper Ordovician Solund-Stavfjord Ophiolite Complex of the westernmost Norwegian Caledonides, show N-to E-MORB affinity, with high Th/Ta (or Nb) ratios giving evidence of subduction influence. The Solund–Stavfjord Ophiolite Complex is overlain by a heterogeneous assemblage of sedimentary and volcanic rocks, the Stavenes Group, of which the Heggøy Formation of metasandstones and phyllites conformably overlies the metabasalts of the Solund–Stavfjord Ophiolite Complex. The Heggøy Formation contains, in places, abundant metabasalt pillow lavas and minor intrusions, geochemically similar to those of the Solund–Stavfjord Ophiolite Complex, and basic metavolcaniclastites of island arc tholeiite (IAT) composition. This indicates that the Solund–Stavfjord Ophiolite Complex and Heggøy Formation developed in a marginal basin between a continental margin and an active subduction system, for which the present-day Andaman Sea may provide a realistic model. The other magmatic rocks of the Stavenes Group, showing both calc-alkaline and alkaline affinities, are less well time-constrained, but they are thought to represent an advanced stage of the island arc development, and ocean island build-up, respectively.

Glaucophane schists from Oscar II Land in western Spitsbergen are described for the first time. Although lawsonite, aragonite and pumpellyite have not been found, the mineral assemblages correspond generally with glaucophane schist assemblages known from elsewhere. The results of three XRF chemical analyses are presented, and five K/Ar radiometric determinations. The radiometric dating and field evidence both suggest that the glaucophane schists are a result not of the Tertiary orogeny which affected this part of Spitsbergen, but of the earlier Caledonian orogeny.

The Pelagonian Zone in Greece represents the westernmost belt of the Hellenide hinterland (Internal Hellenides). Previous geochronological studies of basement rocks from the Pelagonian Zone have systematically yielded Permo-Carboniferous ages. In this study we demonstrate, for the first time, the existence of a Precambrian crustal unit within the crystalline basement of the Pelagonian Zone. The U–Pb single-zircon and SHRIMP ages of these orthogneisses vary from 699 ± 7 Ma to 713 ± 18 Ma, which identify them as the oldest rocks in Greece. These Late Proterozoic rocks, which today occupy an area of c. 20 × 100 km, are significantly different from the neighbouring rocks of the Pelagonian Zone. They are therefore interpreted as delineating a terrane, named here the Florina Terrane. During the Permo-Carboniferous, Florina was incorporated into an active continental margin, where it formed part of the basement for the Pelagonian magmatic arc. The activity of this arc was dated in this study by single-zircon Pb/Pb ages as having taken place at 292 ± 5 Ma and 298 ± 7 Ma. During the Alpine orogeny, Florina, together with the Pelagonian Zone, eventually became a constituent of the Hellenides. Geochemically, the Florina orthogneisses represent granites formed at an active continental margin. Because of the Late Proterozoic ages, this Late Proterozoic active continental margin can be correlated to a Pan-African or Cadomian arc. As the gneisses contain inherited zircons of Late to Middle Proterozoic age, the original location of Florina was probably at the northwestern margin of Gondwana. Similar to other Gondwana-derived terranes, such as East Avalonia, Florina approached the southern margin of Eurasia during Palaeozoic times, where it became part of an active continental margin above the subducting Palaeotethys. These interpretations further indicate that terrane accretion was already playing an important role in the early pre-alpine evolution of the Hellenides.

The basement of the Central Pontides, and by implication that of Crimea, consists of pre-Permian low-grade metaclastic rocks intruded by latest Permian – Early Carboniferous (305–290 Ma) granitoids. Further up in the stratigraphic sequence are Triassic limestones, which are now preserved as olistoliths in the deformed Upper Triassic turbidites. New conodont and foraminifera data indicate an Anisian to Carnian (Middle to Late Triassic) age for these hemi-pelagic Hallstatt-type limestones. The siliciclastic turbidites surrounding the Triassic limestone contain the Norian (Late Triassic) bivalve Monotis salinaria; the same species is also found in the Tauric series in Crimea. The Upper Triassic flysch in the Central Pontides is locally underlain by basaltic pillow lavas and includes kilometre-size tectonic slices of serpentinite. Both the flysch and the serpentinite are cut by an undeformed acidic intrusion with an Ar–Ar biotite age of 162 ± 4 Ma (Callovian–Oxfordian). This indicates that the serpentinite was emplaced into the turbidites before Middle Jurassic time, most probably during latest Triassic or Early Jurassic time, and that the deformation of the Triassic sequence pre-dates the Middle Jurassic. Regional geological data from the circum-Black Sea region, including widespread Upper Triassic flysch, Upper Triassic eclogites and blueschists of oceanic crustal affinity, and apparent absence of a ‘Cimmerian continent’ between the Cretaceous and Triassic accretionary complexes indicate that the latest Triassic Cimmeride orogeny was accretionary rather than collisional and is probably related to the collision and accretion of an oceanic plateau to the southern active margin of Laurasia.

Three theories have been proposed for the origin of Carboniferous basins in Britain: megashear; tension from Rheic Ocean subduction; tension from rifting of the North Atlantic. The first two hypotheses are rejected because they do not explain the Carboniferous volcanism, Stephanian dyke swarm, Boreal marine transgressions during the late Carboniferous and Permian, Carboniferous sedimentary basin histories, basin types or basin orientations.

Carboniferous volcanics were rift-related due to crustal thinning, which also resulted in the formation of sedimentary basins in the British Isles and a marine transgression of Tethyan faunas. Newly formed Carboniferous fracture lines and basin orientations showed that tension varied between east–west and northwest–southeast. Crustal fracturing in the latest Dinantian, possibly due to collision of microcontinents in the closing Rheic and Phoibic oceans with North America, led to the synchronous initiation of rift basins in East Greenland, elevation of source areas for the Millstone Grit of the British Isles, and formation of transform fault zones near Svalbard and North Spain. The narrow, rapidly subsiding, quickly changing ‘fosse’ basins which formed in these transcurrent fault zones contrast with the coeval stable, slower subsiding rift-parallel ‘saucer’ basins of the British Isles. Variations of subsidence rates in all these basins allow interpretations of crustal stress history. Brittle fracturing in the Westphalian C formed the first oceanic crust, but free oceanic spreading from Spain to southwest of the Faeroes only occurred after Stephanian dyke intrusion and crustal thinning at the Faeroes. The Norwegian Sea underwent continental crustal thinning. Ocean spreading and crustal thinning ceased in latest Stephanian times.

Boreal marine transgressions advanced down the newly thinned Norwegian Sea, firstly along its northern part and then reaching the North Sea basins and Germany in the Rotliegendes and Zechstein. Synsedimetary ore deposits formed during early tensional fracturing of the crust; thick coal sequences formed in rift-parallel basins during clastic source decay of elevated rift margins; oil source rocks formed along narrow oceanic or continental rifts from the Westphalian C onwards.

The Guadix Basin became established as an intramontane basin in the central sector of the Betic Cordillera at the beginning of Late Miocene time. Its geodynamic evolution starts with a unit of Tortonian marine sediments and is completed by a unit of Late Turolian–Pleistocene continental sediments. In the two units, six depositional sequences have been differentiated whose boundaries, in most cases, coincide with tectonic events. Geohistorical diagrams show the results of quantitative analyses of subsidence in the northern sector of the basin and permit correlation of the main events with significant changes in the history of subsidence and uplift. A period of strong subsidence occurred at the beginning of Tortonian time causing the formation of a marine basin 800 m deep. The mid- and end-Tortonian tectonic events involved periods of uplift leading to shallowing in the basin. After continentalization at the end of the Tortonian, the basin was uplifted continuously from Late Turolian to Late Pleistocene times, finally accumulating sediments at a height of 1000 m.
