Lithological, major element, trace element and Sr isotope data from cyclic unit 10 of the Rhum Eastern Layered Series are presented. The lower 65 metres of the unit are peridotite, subdivided on textural and geochemical grounds into a lower homogeneous portion approximately 50 metres thick and an upper heterogeneous portion approximately 15 metres thick. The uppermost 16.5 metres of the unit are allivalite. There are steep geochemical gradients across the peridotite-allivalite boundary in Ni content of olivine and whole-rock Sr isotope composition.

Calculations are presented on the geochemical evolution of a Rhum picritic liquid undergoing olivine precipitation, both when the olivines remain suspended in the residual liquid as they precipitate, and when they are continuously fractionated. Quenched groundmass and olivine compositions from the Rhum dykes and the unit 10 peridotite olivines show good agreement with the suspension model but are inconsistent with the fractionation model. The Rhum chamber is thought to have been replenished with a picritic liquid from which olivine crystallized while held in suspension; however, replenishment by a highly olivine-phyric basalt is also possible. The peridotite probably accumulated rapidly as olivines were dumped out of suspension onto the chamber floor.

The lower part of the peridotite is a poikilitic adcumulate; it is suggested that this formed by convective circulation of melt in the pores of the pile of cumulus olivines. In the latter stages of adcumulus growth, more Fe-rich and isotopically contaminated magma entered the top of the cumulus pile causing cumulus olivines to re-equilibrate and giving the intercumulus plagioclase a higher Sr isotope ratio than lower down. The olivines in the allivalite show steep stratigraphic gradients in major element composition but not in their Ni content. They also show substantial variation in major element composition laterally within the allivalite. It is suggested that these features are a consequence of postcumulus re-equilibration of olivine with migrating intercumulus magma.

The origin of the Newer Granites is long-standing problem. In the Caledonian orthotectonic zone the intrusions span the period of late orogenic convergence and uplift, but attempts to relate them as a group to late Iapetan subduction have been unsuccessful. A range of rock types is represented, mainly with I-type affinities, and granodiorite is the most voluminous. In contrast, granitic intrusions south of the Moniaive shear zone in Scotland and also in the north of England have significant S-type characteristics, span the trace of the Iapetus suture and have ages in the range 400–390 Ma, significantly younger than intrusions to the north. We refer to these younger granitic intrusions, along with others of similar character along-strike to the southwest, as the Trans-Suture Suite. We explore the link between the Trans-Suture Suite and recently recognized orogen-wide sinistral transtension in the Early Devonian period. Importantly, the Trans-Suture Suite intrusions are accompanied by an intense suite of lamprophyre dykes, the origin of which is to be sought in extension, decompression and heating of enriched Avalonian sub-continental lithosphere. In some instances the granite intrusions carry clots of lamprophyric origin and the Criffel body is particularly important in being continuously zoned from an I-type with lamprophyric enclaves to an S-type interior. We propose that generation of these lamprophyres during transtension advected heat into the base of the crust to produce the S-type component of the Trans-Suture Suite. Modelling presented shows that generation of voluminous S-type magmas requires the coincidence of several factors: hydrated sub-continental lithospheric mantle preserved during ‘soft’ collision under the Trans-Suture Suite zone; thermal relaxation to remove any subduction refrigeration; crust composed of juvenile volcanogenic material; and Devonian transtension. Our models suggest that if hydration pre-dated transtension then only small granitic bodies could be produced, unless the zone of lamprophyre generation extends beyond the rift zone. The emplacement of the Trans-Suture Suite intrusions overlapped the Acadian deformation period that succeeded the transtensional episode during which the granite magmas were generated.

The Hyllingen Series, comprising the southern part of the 160 km2 Caledonian, synorogenic, layered, mafic Fongen-Hyllingen intrusion, southeast of Trondheim, Norway, crystallized from a basaltic parent magma at 5–6 kb. Well developed modal layering strikes directly towards the magma chamber wall at the southern margin. The lithologies of inclusions match those of the adjacent country rock envelope. Eleven sample profiles (274 samples; over 1000 mineral analyses) allow the Hyllingen Series to be subdivided into four stages which generally decrease in thickness from north to south. A sporadically developed Stage I (< 100 m thick) of mostly unlayered ferrodiorites with relatively evolved compositions occurs at the base. Stage II (400–1500m) consists of layered, broadly ferrodioritic rocks. Modal layering is undisturbed by numerous, plate-like, metabasaltic inclusions which occupy about 22% of Stage II. Cryptic variation is slight except at the top where more evolved compositions are developed. Stage III (350–550 m) has fewer inclusions and is characterized by a gradual regression to more primitive compositions. Stage IV (800–2300 m) shows normal fractionation patterns, and a few minor reversals, with extremely evolved rocks in contact with the roof. Occasional metapelitic, platy inclusions occur near the southern margin.

The rocks gradually become more evolved along the strike of modal layering towards the southern margin. Olivine and plagioclase vary systematically over about 7 km from Fo23:An46 to Fo7:An35 along the Stage II/III boundary and from Fo75:An63 to Fo13:An42 along the Stage III/IV boundary. While the apparent angle of discordance between modal and cryptic layering is usually less than 20°, in Stage IV near the wall of the magma chamber they are highly discordant (approaching 90°) over a thickness of about 900 m.

In situ crystallization along an inclined floor took place from magma which became stratified by double-diffusive convection during Stage II. Modal layering developed concordant with the crystallization front while cryptic layering developed essentially parallel to the liquid stratification. Gradual influx of dense hot primitive magma caused elevation of the stratified magma column in Stage III. During this uplift, progressively more primitive liquid came into contact with earlier crystalline products along the inclined crystallization front. Crystallization during uplift of the magma column gave rise to the gradual regression of Stage III. Highly discordant modal/cryptic layering relations in Stage IV require that the magma became zoned with a horizontal, as well as a vertical, component. This may have occurred in response to lateral cooling establishing horizontal thermal gradients within individual magma layers, the resulting tendency towards density increase being compensated by material diffusion to more evolved compositions.

The original roof during the early period of magma chamber evolution is possibly among the inclusions in Stage II. Repeated magma addition during Stage II resulted in the top magma layer having an extremely evolved composition. During the later stages this buoyant, evolved liquid ultimately crystallized to produce the quartz-bearing syenite in contact with the roof.

The catastrophic slope failures and landslides that occur in the final stages of lateral collapses of volcanoes destroy much of the evidence for precursory deformation and the early stages of the collapses concerned. Aborted or incomplete collapse structures, although rare, are rich sources of information on these stages of development of catastrophic collapses. The San Andres fault system, on the volcanic island of El Hierro, is a relatively young (between about 545 and about 261–176 ka old) but inactive lateral collapse structure. It appears to represent an aborted giant landslide. It is developed along the flank of a steep-sided volcanic rift zone, and is bounded by a discrete strike-slip fault zone at the up-rift end, closest to the centre of the island. This geometry differs markedly from that of collapse structures on stratovolcanoes but bears some similarities to that of active fault systems on Hawaii. Although the fault system has undergone little erosion, cataclasites which formed close to the palaeosurface are well exposed. These cataclasites are amongst the first fault rocks to be described from volcano lateral collapse structures and include the only pseudotachylytes to have been identified in such structures to date. Their development at unusually shallow depths is attributed to large movements on the fault in a single event, the inferred aborted landslide, and a lack of pressurized pore water. The absence of pressurized fluids in the slumping block may have caused the San Andres fault system to cease moving, rather than develop into a giant volcanic landslide. The recognition that the San Andres fault system is inactive greatly reduces the estimated volcanic hazard associated with El Hierro. However, the lack of evidence for precursory deformation prior to the aborted landslide event is disturbing as it implies that giant lateral collapses can occur on steep-sided oceanic islands with little warning.

The Siluro–Devonian suite of granitic plutons in the British Caledonides known as the Newer Granites, together with their associated extrusive rocks, represent one of the most extensively researched examples of calc-alkaline magmatism apparently related to orogeny. Although recent chemical studies have credibly interpreted some of the Scottish intrusions and volcanic rocks as part of a continental-margin magmatic arc generated by the subduction of lapetus oceanic lithosphere beneath Laurentia, insurmountable problems of distribution and timing arise when attempts are made to relate the magmatic activity as a whole to a traditional two-plate collision model for the orogeny.

Newer Granite magmatism is here discussed in the context of more mobilistic models for the post-Grampian evolution of the British Caledonides which involve E–W closure between Laurentia and Baltica, terminated by collision in the Silurian, followed by the northward accretion of Gondwana-derived terranes in the early Devonian. The former produced the Main Caledonian tectonometamorphism of the Northern Highlands of Scotland, the latter the Late Caledonian deformation of the slate belts in the paratectonic Caledonides. These models imply much more complex convergence geometries which can, in principle, account for the whole Newer Granite suite as a series of subduction-generated magmatic arcs overlapping in space and time.

The model proposed involves three late Caledonian magmatic arcs in addition to the Ordovician ‘Borrowdale arc’ which is not considered in this paper. One is related to Laurentia–Baltica convergence with westward subduction beneath the Scottish sector of the Laurentian margin in the Ordovician and Early Silurian, which generated the early members of the Newer Granite suite in the Highlands; a second is related to northward Silurian–early Devonian subduction at the Solway Line, which generated the younger Newer Granites and volcanic rocks north of the Highland Border; and a third, related to northward accretion of the Armorican terrane in early Devonian time, produced intrusive and extrusive magmatism as far south as Southeast Ireland and the English Midlands.

Organic-walled palynomorph assemblages from the Kasterlee Formation in northern Belgium provide new insights into the Late Miocene depositional history and palaeoenvironments of the southernmost North Sea Basin. Ranges of key dinoflagellate cysts constrain the unit between 7.5 and 5.32 Ma, that is, a latest Tortonian to Messinian age. The palynomorph assemblage is characterized, amongst others, by Geonettia clineae, an opportunistic species that thrives in mesotrophic, coastal embayments with a low sediment influx. This environmental setting is corroborated by the notable presence of Gramocysta verricula, a species with preference for shallow marine environments. The occurrence of species of the fresh water green alga Pediastrum indicates manifest river discharge in a near-shore environment or embayment. The coastal depositional environment mirrored by the palynomorphs of the Kasterlee Formation succeeds the distinct transgressive and fully marine environments of the underlying Diest Formation in the Campine area. The results from the palynological study, combined with lithological and geophysical data, show that both Upper Miocene formations are two distinct depositional cycles separated by an erosional or regressive phase. The upper boundary of the Kasterlee Formation is correlated with the Me2 sequence boundary at 5.73 Ma. The Kasterlee Formation is herein formally moved from the Lower Pliocene series to the Upper Miocene series. The coastal environment, probably characterized by a shoaling phase, recorded at the border of the southern North Sea Basin, matches the global record of regressive phases in Messinian sedimentary sequences, which are linked to cooling and increasing global ice volume.

An investigation of the sequence of microspores vertically within a number of seams containing horizons of crassidurite has revealed a succession of three distinct phases, each characterized in the main by the dominance of one of the three genera Lycospora, Laevigato-sporites, and Densosporites, The succession begins with the Lycospore phase and culminates in the crassidurite with the Densospore phase. The significance of this succession in relation to the formation of crassidurite and the provenance of Densospores is discussed.

One of the major metamorphic terranes of the Bohemian Massif, the Erzgebirge, is interpreted to record a subducted part of a Palaeozoic margin of Gondwana. A geochemical study on non-calcareous metasediments from the various metamorphic units from lower greenschist to granulite facies metamorphism supports a recently established thrust model. Geochemical discrimination and correlation from the metasediments of the Erzgebirge suggest repetition of an early Palaeozoic metasedimentary sequence in metamorphic thrust units. This new finding is in line with recent radiometric dating of intercalated metarhyolitic rocks, which yielded ages of around 480 Ma. It is furthermore supported by correlation with a low-grade standard section in Thuringia, which represents the transition from an orogenic belt to a passive margin setting, with highly mature sediments. Significant geochemical signatures have been identified in three different lithotypes, which reappear in at least three metamorphic units of the Erzgebirge. Geochemical correlation of these units was established using simple comparison of averages and with statistical techniques. The identification of significant geochemical signatures from different lithotypes in metamorphic suites has important implications for terrane analysis and reconstruction of ancient tectonic settings.

The repetition of lithologies and their distinct chemical compositions in progressively metamorphosed units is useful for examining element mobility during Barrovian metamorphism. Statistical comparison implies that Li is progressively depleted from the greenschist to amphibolite facies, whereas Ca exhibits some enrichment. All the other elements studied are considered to be immobile.

Very thick shallow water sedimentary sequences were deposited in Neoproterozoic time along the future margins of Laurentia. On the eastern margin these include the Eleonore Bay and Hecla Hoek sequences of Greenland and Svalbard; these are described and their geotectonic context briefly reviewed. They present both geotectonic and geodynamic problems: why did subsidence continue for some 300 Ma prior to the opening of Iapetus, and how could 15–20 km of sediment be accommodated in an ensialic environment?

Prolonged slow stretching appears to have affected the eastern margin of Laurentia while the western (Cordilleran) margin progressed through the rift-drift transition as the Pacific opened. It is proposed that expansion of the Pacific was associated with both the convergence of Proto-Gondwanan continental terranes during the Pan-African orogeny (the extended SWEAT hypothesis) and also the maintenance of very slow extension rates on the future Iapetus margin. The strain-hardening effect of slow stretching may have been inhibited by a continuous basin-fill of juvenile heat-producing Grenville detritus. The onset of subduction in the Pacific freed up this margin; major rifting took place between East Greenland and possibly the Tornquist margin of Baltica in Vendian time, followed by the opening of northern Iapetus.

Metabentonites occur extensively in the Moffat Shale Group of the Southern Uplands of Scotland. At Dob's Linn 135 metabentonite beds, 1–50 cm thick, occur in Ashgill to Llandovery strata, representing an aggregate thickness of 6 m of compacted ash accumulated over approximately 25 Ma. The metabentonites are characterized by relatively high concentrations of trace elements, including Ba, Cs, Hf, Nb, Rb, Ta, Th, U, Y, Zr and REEs, which were inherited from evolved vitric ash. Immobile trace element data indicate that a spectrum of silicic ash compositions accumulated, ranging from subalkaline to mildly peralkaline. In the late Ordovician N. gracilis to G. persculptus biozones, subalkaline ash falls predominated, whereas peralkaline ash falls predominated in the Llandovery (Silurian) P. acuminatus to M. convolutes biozones, giving way to predominantly subalkaline ash falls during accumulation of the M. sedgwickii to R. maximus biozones. Changeovers in the dominant ash types are marked by increased proportions of ash. The magmas from which the ash types evolved were generated in an ensialic arc transitional to a back-arc setting, and involved attenuated sialic crust and mantle characterized by variable depletion in HFS elements. Lithological, petrological and REE characteristics suggest that the Moffat Shale Group is not exclusively pelagic in origin and probably accumulated in a back-arc basin bordering an ensialic arc terrane.

Integrated palynological, organic and inorganic geochemical and petrographical methods have been used for deciphering the depositional redox conditions and character of organic matter of the Famennian Dasberg event horizon from the deep-shelf Kowala succession of the Holy Cross Mountains. The ages of the investigated samples have been established, using miospore data, as VF (Diducites versabilis–Grandispora famenensis) and LV (Retispora lepidophyta–Apiculiretusispora verrucosa) miospore Zones of the Middle/Upper Famennian. In the standard conodont zonation, this corresponds to the uppermost postera to lowermost praesulcata Zones. The presence of green sulphur bacteria biomarkers and dominance of small-sized framboids together with the presence of large framboids and low values of the U/Th ratio may indicate that during sedimentation of the lower Dasberg shale, intermittent anoxia occurred in the water column, or the anoxic conditions prevailed in the upper part of the water column, while the bottom waters were oxygenated, at least briefly. Deposition of the upper Dasberg shale was characterized by both bottom water and water column anoxia. The lack of acritarcha taxa from these intervals could have been due to anoxia in the photic zone. Moreover, organic content is high in those samples. There is no geochemical evidence for anoxia during sedimentation of the deposits sandwiched between the lower and upper Dasberg shales, or in the deposits which underlie and overlie both Dasberg shale horizons. The two discrete anoxic events are interpreted to be the result of major transgressions and the blooming of primary producers. Above the Dasberg shales, small fragments of charcoal and raised concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are detected. This supports the presence of wildfires during deposition of shales just above the boundary of VF/LV palynological zones. Temperatures calculated from the fusinite reflectance values suggest that the charcoal was formed in low-temperature ground and/or surface fires. The typical marine character of sedimentation combined with the high proportion of charcoals suggests that wildfires were large-scale, and that there was intensive transport of terrestrial material. The main causes of intensive wildfires were a significant rise of O2 in the atmosphere and important progress in the land plant diversity during Late Devonian times. Palynofacies studies suggest that the transgression corresponds to the part IIf of the Late Devonian sea-level curve.

This paper provides a brief outline of the current, detailed inter-disciplinary work on the Xiaoyangquiao section, trying to expose all the aspects for reference tied to the Global Single Stratigraphic Point (GSSP) Concept for defining the Cambrian–Ordovician Boundary. The 45 m critical interval of this section outcrops very well along the steep bank of a stream and is free from folding, faulting, intrusions, and has not been affected by weathering. Colour alternation of conodonts and acritarchs, and crystallinity indices of illite all indicate a maximum thermal grade of 100 °C. The lithofacies, being of great lateral persistence for a hundred kilometres, consists mainly of a rhythmical sequence of lime mudstone and shales deposited in a moderately deep outer shelf environment of quiet water, well below the normal storm wave base. Chemical investigation of the rocks demonstrates strong positive correlation between A12O3 content and those of K2O, MgO, Fe2O3, TiO2, Be, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn and Ba, indicating these components are tied to the clay fractions. A stable depositional environment is demonstrated by the uniform chemistries through the boundary interval. Close to the boundary itself P2O5 contents are low, indicating continuous sedimentation at fairly substantial rates.

The major biological events, the biostratigraphic framework, and the stratigraphic range of conodont, graptolite, trilobite, and acritarch taxa are illustrated briefly with diagrams. Following the majority views of the Calgary Plenary Session, the boundary level is to be chosen at a point marked by the First Appearance Datum (FAD) of the selected conodont taxon or taxa in the vicinity of the level close to, but below, the first influx of nematophorous graptolites. The following four points marked by the incoming of conodont taxon or taxa are recommended for consideration of the ‘Golden Spike'‘: (1) FAD of Cordylodus intermedius at 5.28 m below the first influx of nematophorous graptolites; (2) FAD of Hirsutodontus simpler–Cordylodus drucei–Albiconus postcostatus at 5.23 m; (3) FAD of Semiacontiodus lavadamensis–Utahconus utahensis–Monocostodus sevierensis at 3.85 m; (4) FAD of Cordylodus lindstromi at 2.23 m. For the following reasons the FAD of H. simplex–C. drucei–A. postcostatus is favoured: (1) the taxa are all distinct and widely dispersed; (2) intensive evolutionary change took place in conodonts, graptolites, trilobites and acritarchs prior to or after this point; all the fossil groups occur together, providing correlation with many regions throughout the world; (3) the point is in a position between the previously widely accepted boundary levels based on graptolites and trilobites; (4) the proposed point lies within a thin, laterally persistent, rhythmical sequence. The FAD of Cordylodus lindstromi is also a favourable point, sharing many advantages mentioned above. But this point is less satisfactory in being defined by the FAD of a single taxon C. lindstromi which also has an extremely small population size.

An isochron age of 500.7 ± 7.4 Ma is determined from clay fractions of mudstones 8.5 m below the proposed point by means of the Rubidium–Strontium method.

The ɛND signature determined from conodonts, trilobites hyolithids and acrotretid brachiopods has a mean value of −6.7, comparable with that of the coeval oceanic water mass occupying southeastern North America and Europe, and indicating that northeastern China bordered the same ocean. The mean Tdm model age determined was 1.26 Ga at the time of sedimentation, compatible with the mean Tdm model age of approximately 1.1 Ga for the Pacific Ocean today. The relatively low value of the Tdm model age indicates a substantial input from young orogenic volcanic island arcs and terranes.

The well-preserved Tvären crater is noteworthy for being one of a small number of Early and Middle Ordovician impact structures formed in a marine environment. It is demonstrated to be an impact structure by the presence of a breccia lens, consisting of crystalline basement rocks, and shocked quartz. The breccia lens formed under dry-hot conditions after expulsion of sea-water by the impact. Resurging sea-water thereupon deposited a positively graded, 60 m thick turbidite-like unit. This graded resurge deposit is a previously unknown feature, to be expected in open-sea impacts. Breccia in the lower part of this graded deposit contains fragments of a remarkably complete orthoceratite limestone succession that existed at the site of impact, resting on non-lithified sand of probably Early to earliest Middle Cambrian age. A sedimentary succession was deposited inside the crater at depths decreasing from more than 200 m in the initial stages to some 100 m at the time of deposition of the youngest preserved beds. The environment within the crater thus favoured deposition of an essentially complete stratigraphic succession with depth-controlled palaeoecology for a significant time interval after the impact. Whereas planktonic members, like graptolites and chitinozoa, are present throughout the post-impact succession, and asaphids, almost as persistent, became established at an early date, burrowers were somewhat reluctant to enter and remopleuridids and small strophomenids came in at a late stage. We suggest as a result of this study that structures formed by impact may offer unique information about the palaeogeology and palaeoenvironment of the region hit by the impact.

We present and use seismic images to constrain possible scenarios for the evolution of the Middle Miocene Gachsaran Formation in the Central Iranian Zagros during the Neogene folding. This evaporitic sequence plays an important role in sealing the Oligocene–Miocene Asmari reservoirs in the Dezful Embayment and offshore regions. It was deposited in the flexural basin south of the Mountain Front Fault, during the progressive southwestward propagation of the Zagros folding. Its thickness changes very rapidly from several hundred to more than 4000 m. This thickness variation is related to faulting, folding and flow. Seismic and subsurface data show that the Gachsaran evaporite sequence is a major disharmonic level in the Dezful Embayment and shallow, molassic synclines often overlie anticlinal axes at depth. The lithological composition of the Gachsaran Formation is mainly a combination of salt, shale and anhydrite, which have a high interval velocity contrast. Anomalous velocity behaviours of these sedimentary units after deformation affect the seismic quality of the surrounding area, especially the southern flank of the main anticline structures.

Subtidal columnar stromatolites up to 2.5 m high near Lee Stocking Island in the Exuma Cays, Bahamas, have surface mats approximately equally composed of algae and cyanobacteria. The stromatolites are composed of fine–medium oöid and peloid sand. This sediment is supplied to the growing stromatolite surfaces by strong tidal currents which lift grains into suspension and sweep migrating dunes over the columns. The algae include an unidentified filamentous chlorophyte, and numerous diatom species mostly belonging to Mastogloia, Nitzschia and Navicula. The dominant cyanobacteria are two oscillatoriacean species, both probably belonging to Schizothrix. Trapping of sediment is mainly effected by the unidentified chlorophyte which is veneered by epiphytic diatoms. Grains are bound into a mucilaginous mat composed of diatoms and cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria alone would not be able to trap and bind coarse sediment so effectively in this environment. In being coarse-grained and having a significant eualgal component to their mats, these stromatolites are similar to subtidal columnar stromatolites at Shark Bay, Western Australia. The Lee Stocking stromatolites are physically stressed by high velocity tidal currents and mobile sediment. The Shark Bay stromatolites are stressed by hypersalinity. In both cases stress deters grazers, encrusters and bioeroders. These coarse-grained eualgal stromatolites contrast with micritic and predominantly prokaryotic stromatolites of most Recent marine environments, and are not analogues for most pre-Phanerozoic stromatolites. They appear to be a response to changing stromatolitic mat components in the Cenozoic.

We report U–Pb electron microprobe (zircon and monazite) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) U–Pb (zircon) ages from a granulite-facies metapelite and a garnet–biotite gniess from Chittikara, a classic locality within the Trivandrum Block of southern India. The majority of the electron-microprobe data on zircons from the metapelite define apparent ages between 1500 and 2500 Ma with a prominent peak at 2109±22 Ma, although some of the cores are as old as 3070 Ma. Zircon grains with multiple age zoning are also detected with 2500–3700 Ma cores, 1380–1520 mantles and 530–600 Ma outer rims. Some homogeneous and rounded zircon cores yielded late Neoproterozoic ages that suggest that deposition within the Trivandrum Block belt was younger than 610 Ma. The outermost rims of these grains are characterized by early Cambrian ages suggesting metamorphic overgrowth at this time. The apparent ages of monazite grains from this locality reveal multiple provenance and polyphase metamorphic history, similar to those of the zircons. In a typical case, Palaeoproterozoic cores (1759–1967 Ma) are enveloped by late Neoproterozoic rims (562–563 Ma), which in turn are mantled by an outermost thin Cambrian rim (∼515 Ma). PbO v. ThO*2 plots for monazites define broad isochrons, with cores indicating a rather imprecise age of 1913±260 Ma (MSWD=0.80) and late Neoproterozoic/Cambrian cores as well as thin rims yielding a well-defined isochron with an age of 557±19 Ma (MSWD=0.82). SIMS U–Pb isotopic data on zircons from the garnet–biotite gneiss yield a combined core/rim imprecise discordia line between 2106±37 Ma and 524±150 Ma. The data indicate Palaeoproterozoic zircon formation with later partial or non-uniform Pb loss during the late Neoproterozoic/Cambrian tectonothermal event. The combined electron probe and SIMS data from the metapelite and garnet–biotite gneiss at Chittikara indicate that the older zircons preserved in the finer-grained metapelite protolith have heterogeneous detrital sources, whereas the more arenaceous protolith of the garnet–biotite gniess was sourced from a single-aged terrane. Our data suggest that the metasedimentary belts in southern India may have formed part of an extensive late Neoproterozoic sedimentary basin during the final amalgamation of the Gondwana supercontinent.

Seven granitoid gneisses from the contact zone between the eastern margin of the Variscan belt and the Brunian microcontinent in SW Poland have been dated by ion-microprobe and 207Pb/206Pb single zircon evaporation methods. The zircons define two age groups for the gneiss protoliths: (1) late Neoproterozoic c. 576–560 Ma and (2) early Palaeozoic c. 488–503 Ma granites. The granitoid gneisses belonging to the basement of the Brunian microcontinent contain abundant Mesoproterozoic to latest Palaeoproterozoic inherited material in the range of 1200–1750 Ma. The gneisses of the Variscan crustal domain lack Mesoproterozoic inherited zircon cores. Trace element geochemistry of Proterozoic gneisses reveals features resembling either volcanic arc or post-collisional granites. The studied rocks are geochemically similar to other Proterozoic orthogneisses derived from the basement of the Brunian microcontinent. Gneisses with early Palaeozoic protolith ages are geochemically comparable to granitoid gneisses widespread in the adjacent Sudetic part of the Bohemian Massif and are considered characteristic of peri-Gondwanan crust. Our data prove the dissimilarity between the Brunia plate and the westerly terranes of the Variscan belt. The occurrence of granitic gneisses with late Neoproterozoic protolith ages and widespread Mesoproterozoic inheritance in our dated samples support an East Avalonian affinity for the Brunian microcontinent. In contrast, the abundance of gneisses derived from an early Palaeozoic granitic protolith and devoid of Mesoproterozoic zircon cores supports the Armorican affinity of the Variscan domain bordering on the Brunia plate from the west. Structural evidence shows that the eastern segment of the Variscan belt is juxtaposed against the Brunian microcontinent along a N–S-trending tectonic contact, possibly equivalent to the Rheic suture.

Southwest Spitsbergen, Wedel Jarlsberg Land, consists of two Proterozoic crustal blocks with differing metamorphic histories. Both blocks experienced Caledonian greenschist-facies metamorphism, but only the southern block records an earlier pervasive M1 amphibolite-facies metamorphism and strong deformational fabric. In situ EMPA total-Pb monazite geochronology from both matrix and porphyroblast inclusion results indicate that the older M1 metamorphism occurred at 643 ± 9 Ma, consistent with published cooling ages of c. 620 Ma (hornblende) and 580 Ma (mica) obtained from these same rocks. This region thus contains a lithostratigraphic profile and metamorphic history which are unique within the Svalbard Archipelago. Documentation of a pervasive late Neoproterozoic Barrovian metamorphism is difficult to reconcile with a quiescent non-tectonic regime typically inferred for this region, based on the occurrence of rift-drift sequences on the Baltic and Laurentian passive margins. Instead, our new metamorphic age implies an exotic origin of the pre-Devonian basement exposed in SW Spitsbergen and supports models of terrane assembly postulated for the Svalbard Archipelago.

A review of biodiversity curves of marine organisms indicates that, despite fluctuations in amplitude (some large), a large-scale, long-term radiation of life took place during the early Palaeozoic Era; it was aggregated by a succession of more discrete and regionalized radiations across geographies and within phylogenies. This major biodiversification within the marine biosphere started during late Precambrian time and was only finally interrupted in the Devonian Period. It includes both the Cambrian Explosion and the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event. The establishment of modern marine ecosystems took place during a continuous chronology of the successive establishment of organisms and their ecological communities, developed during the ‘Cambrian substrate revolution’, the ‘Ordovician plankton revolution’, the ‘Ordovician substrate revolution’, the ‘Ordovician bioerosion revolution’ and the ‘Devonian nekton revolution’. At smaller scales, different regional but important radiations can be recognized geographically and some of them have been identified and named (e.g. those associated with the ‘Richmondian Invasion’ during Late Ordovician time in Laurentia and the contemporaneous ‘Boda event’ in parts of Europe and North Africa), in particular from areas that were in or moved towards lower latitudes, allowing high levels of speciation on epicontintental seas during these intervals. The datasets remain incomplete for many other geographical areas, but also for particular time intervals (e.g. during the late Cambrian ‘Furongian Gap’). The early Palaeozoic biodiversification therefore appears to be a long-term process, modulated by bursts in significant diversity and intervals of inadequate data, where its progressive character will become increasingly clearer with the availability of more complete datasets, with better global coverage and more advanced analytical techniques.

Collision-related rocks intrude metamorphic rocks overthrust by ophiolitic units to make up the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex. A wide variety of rock types were produced by the latest Cretaceous magmatism in the complex. These rocks can be divided into three distinct units: (1) calc-alkaline (Ağaçören, Behrekdağ, Cefalıkdağ, Çelebi, Ekecikdağ, Halaçlı, Karamadazı, Kösefakılı, Terlemez, Üçkapılı, Yozgat); (2) sub-alkaline (Baranadağ); and (3) alkaline (Atdere, Davulalan, Eğrialan, Hamit, İdişdağı, Karaçayır). The calc-alkaline rocks are metaluminous/peraluminous I- to S-type plutons ranging from monzodiorite to granite. The sub-alkaline rocks are metaluminous I-type plutons ranging from monzonite to granite. The alkaline rocks are metaluminous to peralkaline plutons, predominantly A-type, ranging from foid-bearing monzosyenite to granite. These plutons crystallized under varying pressures (5.3–2.6 kbar) and a wide range of temperatures (858–698 °C) from highly oxidized magmas (log fO2 −17 to −12). All intrusive rocks display enrichment in LILE and LREE compare to HFSE and have high 87Sr/86Sr and low 143Nd/144Nd ratios. These characteristics indicate that these rocks are derived from a mantle source containing large subduction components, and have experienced assimilation coupled with fractional crystallization (AFC) during uprise through crust. The coexistence of calc-alkaline and alkaline magmatism in the complex may be ascribed to mantle source heterogeneity before collision. Either thermal perturbation of the metasomatized lithosphere by delamination of the thermal boundary layer or removal of a subducted plate (slab breakoff) are the likely mechanisms for the initiation of the collision-related magmatism in the complex.
