The discovery of c. 1.77 Ga A-type granite in the Tarim Craton (TC) provides the first evidence that supports an extensional event related to fragmentation of the Columbia supercontinent in the late Palaeoproterozoic. We present laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U–Pb ages, Lu–Hf isotopic data and the whole-rock geochemical and Nd isotopic data of A-type granites in the Dunhuang area in the SE Tarim Craton. Zircon U–Pb dating for three granite samples indicate that they were emplaced at c. 1.77 Ga. Zircons from these granites have εHf(t) values ranging from –5.9 to 8.7, corresponding to two-stage model ages of 1.9–2.7 Ga. These granites exhibit the following petrological geochemical characteristics that are typical of A-type granite: (a) high content of SiO2 and alkalis (i.e. high K2O + Na2O with K2O/Na2O > 1), enrichment of high-field-strength elements (HFSE) and rare Earth elements (REE) (except for Eu) and extreme depletion of Ba, Sr, P, Ti and Eu; (b) 10000×Ga/Al ratios in the Dunhuang granites of 3.5–4.4, with an average value of 3.79 which is similar to the global average of 3.75 for A-type granites; (c) the presence of characteristic minerals such as amphibole, sphene and perthite; and (d) zirconium saturation temperature results indicate that the Dunhuang granites have high initial magmatic temperatures in the range 887–950°C, similar to those of typical of A-type granites. Whole-rock εNd(t) values range from –2.5 to –6.2 and TDM model ages from 2.3 to 2.7 Ga. Nd–Hf isotopic and whole-rock geochemical data indicate that these granites were most likely derived from the late Archean crustal source in a post-collisional/post-orogenic extensional tectonic environment. The late Palaeoproterozoic A-type granites in the TC could be correlated with those of the North China Craton (NCC), India and the Canadian Shield, thus demonstrating extensional tectonics and break-up of the Columbia supercontinent.

We describe a study of the E–W-trending South Wagad Fault (SWF) complex at the eastern part of the Kachchh Rift Basin (KRB) in Western India. This basin was filled during Late Cretaceous time, and is presently undergoing tectonic inversion. During the late stage of the inversion cycle, all the principal rift faults were reactivated as transpressional strike-slip faults. The SWF complex shows wrench geometry of an anastomosing en échelon fault, where contractional and extensional segments and offsets alternate along the Principal Deformation Zone (PDZ). Geometric analysis of different segments of the SWF shows that several conjugate faults, which are a combination of R synthetic and R’ antithetic, propagate at a short distance along the PDZ and interact, generating significant fault slip partitioning. Surface morphology of the fault zone revealed three deformation zones: a 500 m to 1 km wide single fault zone; a 5–6 km wide double fault zone; and a c. 500 m wide diffuse fault zone. The single fault zone is represented by a higher stress accumulation which is located close to the epicentre of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake of Mw 7.7. The double fault zone represents moderate stress at releasing bends bounded by two fault branches. The diffuse fault zone represents a low-stress zone where several fault branches join together. Our findings are well corroborated with the available geological and seismological data.

The Sulitjelma Gabbro in the central Norwegian Caledonides has been dated with the U/Pb zircon/sphene method to 437±2 Ma. Geological relationships as well as trace-element geochemistry and Nd and Sr isotopic compositions suggest that the gabbro and associated dyke swarms and pillow lava formed during the initial stages of back-arc spreading. The age constrains the timing of juxtaposition of an older island-arc terrane and continental-margin lithologies exposed within the Caledonian nappes. The age of the gabbro is similar to that of the Solund–Stavfjord Ophiolite in west Norway, and confirms that spreading-related magmatism and marginal-basin development took place along the margin of Iapetus in late Ordovician–early Silurian times.

Stratigraphical investigations in the Finchley depression (Middlesex depression) are summarized and show that a gravel, laminated deposits and till sequence is present. Compositional study of the gravels indicates that they were derived from S of the present Thames valley. Gravel patches in North Surrey can be subdivided into two terrace fragments formed by a Mole-Wey south bank Thames tributary. The upper unit is correlated with the gravel at Finchley. The lower unit terrace can be shown to grade into the Thames Black Park Terrace Gravel, and the latter is extended through London to Dartford and Chatham. The events leading to the diversion of the Mole-Wey tributary by the Anglian chalky till ice parallel those of the Thames in the Vale of St Albans and suggest that similar events may also have occurred in other S bank tributary valleys to the E.

Carbon- and oxygen-isotope ratios are commonly used to correlate shallow- and deep-marine successions. Carbon- and oxygen-isotope analyses were performed on bulk-carbonate samples from two Kimmeridgian sections of the Swiss Jura platform in order to correlate them with biostratigraphically well-dated coeval sections in the adjacent basin. On the platform, a general decrease in δ13C and δ18O values from the base to the top of the studied interval is measured, whereas time-equivalent pelagic–hemipelagic carbonates record an increase in carbon- and oxygen-isotope ratios. Moreover, the measured δ13C and δ18O values are generally lower than those indicated for the Kimmeridgian open ocean and show high-frequency variations superimposed on the general trend. Samples were screened for diagenetic alteration using optical and cathodoluminescence petrography and coupled carbon- and oxygen-isotope and trace-element analyses. Some observations favour a role for diagenetic alteration, but isotopic and elemental trends as well as sedimentological evidence suggest that the more negative values of δ13C and δ18O relative to Kimmeridgian seawater are also due to local environmental conditions. High-frequency changes in δ18O and δ13C values most likely result from variations in salinity and carbonate production and accumulation rates. These variations were produced by different water masses that were isolated from the open ocean and developed their own geochemical signatures. Repeated isolation was induced by high-frequency sea-level fluctuations and helped by irregular platform morphology. Consequently, carbon- and oxygen-isotope records in shallow-marine carbonates can be used for stratigraphic correlation only if their origin is well known.

An extensive pumice raft was encountered by H.M.S. Protector in the area of the South Sandwich Islands on the 14th March, 1962. Evidence is presented which suggests that this material was ejected on the 5th March, 1962, from a submarine eruptive centre 35 miles to the north-west of the existing islands but on the axis of the South Sandwich Arc.

Acritarchs are reported from basal Cambrian rock units inthe Cantabrian region of northern Spain that are known to contain archaeocyathan and trilobite faunas. Biostratigraphic correlation of the Iberian sequences with other regions has been hampered by the strong provincialism of these faunas. However, this report of evidently cosmopolitan acritarch taxaestablishes the time equivalence of early Cambrian trilobite faunas from Iberia, Baltoscandia and the East European Platform (EEP). Our data suggest that the detrital deposition of the Lower Cambrian Herreria Formation embraces at least three (and possibly four) Lower Cambrian acritarch zones previously identified in the EEP, eastern Siberia, Baltoscandia, Scotland, Greenland, Svalbard and western North America. The early Cambrian transgression in northern Spain was probably initiated in Talsy times (Schmidtiellus mickwitzi trilobite Zone in Baltoscandia and the EEP), in part corresponding to the Dokidocyathus regularis archaeocyathian Zone of the Middle Tommotian in Siberia.

Basic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks of pre-Albian age are overlain by the Abakaliki shale of Asu River Group in Eastern Nigeria. The shale has been assigned Albian age on the basis of abundant (middle Albian?) ammonites found in it. It was folded (together with the pyroclastics) about a NE–SW trending anticlinal axis during the Santonian time. This new evidence of an early Cretaceous volcanism supports a pre-Albian rifting of the African shield prior to the opening of the Southern Atlantic. The latter event took place (probably in stages) during Albian time (i.e. less than 110 Ma ago), with a widespread marine transgression in West Africa and South America.

A stratigraphical outline of the Hecla Hoek succession summarizing post-war work in Ny Friesland is presented for the first time. This shows a geosynclinal series of sediments reaching down at least 15,000 m. below Cambrian in a more or less continuous succession. It is compared with other Hecla Hoek successions in Svalbard.

The Themed Fault marks the southernmost border of the Early Mesozoic passive continental margin of north Sinai. This 200-km long fault transects the northern part of the Tih Plateau that supposedly occupies a tectonically stable area. Post-Middle Eocene–pre-Early Miocene rejuvenation of this fault proceeded by right-lateral wrenching and represents a newly recognized phase of deformation in the history of north and central Sinai. The minimum estimate for the strike-slip movement on this fault is about 300–750 m. To the north of the Themed Fault is a narrow fault belt (Sinai hinge belt) that marks the boundary between a tectonically unstable crustal block to the north (the north Sinai fold belt area) and a tectonically stable crustal block to the south, the main part of the Tih plateau area.

Four phases of dextral wrenching rejuvenated the faults of the Early Mesozoic passive continental margin in northern Egypt; one of them affected the Themed Fault. The oldest (Dl) deformation is early Late Senonian and is related to the closure of Neotethys and the Eastern Mediterranean basin. The D1 deformation proceeded by pure wrenching in the north Western Desert of Egypt. In contrast, it proceeded by transpression in north Sinai due to the irregular plate boundary and the relationship of this boundary to the slip vectors. D2 deformation (post-Middle Eocene–pre-Early Miocene) is clear in the Themed Fault area although reported herein for the first time; it is related to continued closure of the Eastern Mediterranean basin and proceeded by pure wrenching. D3 deformation (Late Oligocene–Early Miocene) proceeded by divergent wrenching in the north Eastern Desert and is kinematically related to the transfer of slip from the nearby faults of the Suez rift. D4 deformation (post-Early Miocene to Recent) affected the Sinai hinge belt by pure wrenching and is probably related to the left-lateral slip on the Dead Sea Transform and the related drag of the eastern edges of the fault blocks of this hinge belt. Recent seismic activity in the Sinai hinge belt perhaps indicates that the D4 deformation has continued to the present time, although morphological expression of recent tectonic movement is lacking. In contrast, the Themed Fault is seismically quiet at present.

A grey pyritic mudstone from Central Wales (Red Vein unit of the Dicellograptus anceps zone, Upper Ordovician Ashgill) has been examined in thin section by scanning electron microscopy using backscattered electrons. Using backscatter it is possible to identify individual mineral constituents of the mudstone by virtue of their atomic number (Z) contrast and differential hardness (relief). The amount of detail observable is far greater than that possible with optical microscopy. Valuable information can be obtained relating to particle form, orientation, texture and internal structure which aids in interpretation of the deformational and diagenetic history of the rock. The adoption of electron microscopical methods in the study of thin sections and polished rock chip surfaces promises to revolutionize the field of shale petrology.

Deep boreholes show that plutonic and volcanic igneous rocks comprise an important component of the Caledonian basement in eastern England. The isotopic compositions of these rocks reveal that many of them are of late Ordovician age (440–460 Ma), and their geochemical compositions suggest calc–alkaline affinities. The intermediate (diorite-tonalite) plutonic rocks are associated with a prominent northwest–southeast trending belt of aeromagnetic anomalies extending from Derby to St Ives, Hunts., which is interpreted to work the plutonic core of a calc-alkaline magmatic arc. It is inferred that this arc was generated by the subduction of oceanic lithosphere, possibly from the Tornquist Sea, in a south or southwest direction beneath the Midlands Microcraton in late Ordovician times. The age and geochemical composition of concealed Ordovician volcanic rocks in eastern England, and hypabyssal intrusions of the Midlands Minor Intrusive Suite in central England, is compatible with such a hypothesis.

We have analysed 129 stratigraphic sections from the Timan–Pechora basin, from its adjacent continental shelf and from the South Barents Sea basin, in order to determine whether existing models of extensional sedimentary basin formation can be applied to these intracratonic basins or whether new mechanisms of formation need to be invoked. The subsidence history of each section has been calculated using standard backstripping techniques. An inverse model, based on finite-duration lithospheric stretching, has then been used to calculate the distribution of strain rate as a function of time required to fit each subsidence profile. Results demonstrate an excellent fit between theory and observation. By combining our analysis with independent field-based and geophysical observations, we show that the Timan–Pechora basin underwent at least four phases of mild lithospheric stretching during the Phanerozoic (β<1.2). These phases occurred in Ordovician, Late Ordovician–Silurian, Middle–Late Devonian and Permian–Early Triassic times. Growth on normal faults, episodes of volcanic activity and regional considerations provide corroborative support for the existence of all four phases. Although less well constrained, subsidence data from the South Barents Sea basin are consistent with a similar Early–Middle Palaeozoic history. The main difference is that Permian–Early Triassic extension is substantially greater than that seen onshore. This similarity implies structural connectivity throughout their respective evolutions. Finally, subsidence modelling demonstrates that rapid foreland basin formation, associated with the Uralian Orogeny, was initiated in Permo-Triassic times and is confined to the eastern margin of the Timan–Pechora basin. Coeval foreland subsidence does not occur on the eastern margin of the South Barents Sea basin, supporting the allochthonous nature of Novaya Zemlya. The most puzzling result is the existence of simultaneous lithospheric extension and foreland loading in Permian–Early Triassic times. This juxtaposition is most clearly seen within the Timan–Pechora basin itself and suggests that convective drawdown may play a role in foreland basin formation.

High-resolution SIMS U–Pb dating of metamorphic zircons of the TTG gneisses, gneissic granitoid and amphibolites of the Lushan terrane, Taihua metamorphic complex, suggests that the metamorphism had taken place at least as early as ~1.96–1.86 Ga. These new dates, along with reference data, demonstrate that the southern and middle terranes of the Trans-North China Orogen had been involved in the continent–continent collision between the Western Block and the Eastern Block of the North China Craton. This orogenic process started as early as 1.96 Ga and lasted as late as 1.80 Ga.

East Greenland is a classical area for the study of the Permian–Triassic transition and the succession is one of the most expanded in the world. New ammonoid data from the Wordie Creek Formation have allowed us to better reconstruct the history of the East Greenland basin from semi-isolated basins with an endemic fauna during latest Permian–earliest Triassic H. triviale–H. martini zones time to well-connected open marine shelf basins during the Early Triassic M. subdemissum, O. commune, W. decipiens and B. rosenkrantzi Zone times. The East Greenland zonation can be correlated with Boreal zonations in Arctic Canada, Svalbard and northeastern Asia. It allows precise relative dating and correlation of important events across the Permian–Triassic boundary. The new ammonoid data indicate that deposition was continuous across the Permian–Triassic boundary and developed as a marine mudstone–mudstone contact in basinal areas of Hold With Hope, northern and southern Jameson Land. Correlation of the ammonoid stratigraphy with the FAD of Hindeodus parvus, which defines the base of the Triassic in Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) in Meishan, China, suggests that the Hypophiceras triviale Zone is to be referred to the uppermost Permian, whereas the H. martini Zone is lowermost Triassic. Accordingly, the end-Permian marine and terrestrial extinctions and associated isotope changes as well as the subsequent adaptive radiations in East Greenland took place in latest Permian time. New Boreal faunas and floras were well established and diversified in the Hypophiceras triviale Zone prior to the beginning of the Triassic, and the Permian–Triassic boundary, in its present definition, is no longer reflecting major changes in the Earth system. It would have been fortunate if a GSSP were defined in a protracted section at a point of major environmental perturbations, marked by isotope excursions, chemical anomalies and mass extinction, rather than in the strongly condensed section like Meishan at a point which post-dates all significant events.

Stable isotopic measurements have been made on both planktonic foraminifera and coccolithic matrix of Middle Cretaceous (Late Albian–Cenomanian) age from two Pacific low latitude sites. The degree of alteration of the foraminifera has been assessed through the application of chemical analyses, cathodoluminescence and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The rotaliporid foraminifera display an interspecies range of δ18O values from −2.29 to −3.01‰ at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 463 and from −2.74 to −3.55‰ at DSDP Site 305. Hedbergellid foraminifera exhibit a δ18O interspecies variation of −2.52 to −3.02‰ at Site 305. Isotopic analysis of individual Hedbergella delrioensis and Rotalipora appenninica foraminifera from single samples shows H. delrioensis to have a surprisingly large spread of δ18O values (−2.492 to −3.097‰ from Site 463, −2.454 to −3.344‰ from Site 305), whilst δ13C values remain confined to a narrower range. Such a spread of oxygen values may be related to a number of factors, including subtle diagenetic alteration, a wide range of temperature-related depth habitats or growth related changes of primary skeletal calcite. The hedbergellids have consistently lighter oxygen and heavier carbon isotopic values than do the rotaliporid foraminifera and hence provide isotopically derived palaeotemperatures consistent with a thermally stratified ocean. At both sites the oxygen isotopic data are consistent with a gradual warming through Albian–Cenomanian time. However, the results suggest that Middle Cretaceous equatorial oceans were possibly only as warm as those of the present day (or slightly warmer), but did not reach the high temperatures claimed in older literature.

Whole-rock geochemical and Sm/Nd isotope data are presented for a representative suite of crustal rocks from the Pindos Ophiolite in order to resolve the origin of the geochemical signature of the boninites. Comparison is made with Triassic MORB from the Avdella mélange and with other ophiolitic rocks of northwestern Greece. Hydrothermal alteration results in large scatter in Sr and K and some variability in Ba, Th and U. The Pindos boninites contain high Zr and Hf with respect to REE, characteristic of many boninites. Pb, La/Sm and Nb decrease with decreasing TiO2 from MORB to IAT, but then increase in the boninites. Nd isotopic values expressed as εNd decrease systematically with decreasing TiO2, from 7–8 in IAT to 0.6–3.0 in boninites. As mantle wedge harzburgite became increasingly depleted, another magma source contributed significant amounts of Pb, REE and probably Nb. The Pb and other large-ion lithophile elements may have been transported in aqueous solutions from the subducting slab, but the REE and Nb imply an ocean-island basalt (OIB)-type source within the mantle wedge. This OIB source is a consequence of mantle plume activity during late Triassic rifting.

Upper Triassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Mamonia Complex in southwestern Cyprus are exposed in erosional windows through the post-Cretaceous cover, where the Mamonia Complex is tectonically imbricated with the Troodos and Akamas ophiolitic suites. Most of these Upper Triassic volcanic rocks have been considered to represent remnants of Triassic oceanic crust and its associated seamounts. New Nd and Pb isotopic data show that the whole Mamonia volcanic suite exhibits features of oceanic island basalts (OIB). Four rock types have been distinguished on the basis of the petrology and chemistry of the rocks. Volcanism began with the eruption of depleted olivine tholeiites (Type 1) and oceanic island tholeiites (Type 2) associated with deep basin siliceous and/or calcareous sediments. The tholeiites were followed by highly phyric alkali basalts (Type 3) interbedded with pelagic Halobia-bearing limestones or white reefal limestones. Strongly LREE-enriched trachytes (Type 4) were emplaced during the final stage of volcanic activity. Nd and Pb isotopic ratios suggest that tholeiites and mildly alkali basalts derived from partial melting of heterogeneous enriched mantle sources. Fractional crystallization alone cannot account for the derivation of trachytes from alkaline basalts. The trachytes could have been derived from the partial melting at depth of mafic material which shares with the alkali basalts similar trace element and isotopic compositions. This is corroborated by the rather similar isotopic compositions of the alkali basalts and trachytes. The correlations observed between incompatible elements (Nb, Th) and εNd and Pb isotopic initial ratios suggest that the Mamonia suite was derived from the mixing of a depleted mantle (DMM) and an enriched component of High μ (μ = 238U/204Pb, HIMU) type. Models using both Nd and Pb isotopic initial ratios suggest that the depleted tholeiites (Type 1) derived from a DMM source contaminated by an Enriched Mantle Type 2 component (EM2), and that the oceanic tholeiites (Type 2), alkali basalts (Type 3) and trachytes (Type 4) were derived from the mixing of the enriched mantle source of the depleted tholeiites with a HIMU component. None of the Mamonia volcanic rocks show evidence of crustal contamination. The Upper Triassic within-plate volcanism likely erupted in a small southerly Neotethyan basin, located north of the Eratosthenes seamount and likely floored by oceanic crust.

The Cambrian–Ordovician Boundary is recognized at different horizons on various continents by utilizing several fossil groups. Conodonts are abundant, diverse, and less provincial and facies-controlled than other fossils in this interval; many species are widespread and some are cosmopolitan. Strata representing the Cambrian–Ordovician Boundary interval from Asia, Australia, and North America can be correlated easily when those strata are from cratonal or shelf environments. Strata from slope facies have fewer conodonts, fewer taxa, and taxa may have different ranges compared with cratonal and shelf facies. It may be easier to correlate intercontinentally within cratonal/shelf facies than to correlate intracontinentally from cratonal/shelf facies to slope facies.

A new hierarchical arrangement of conodont interval zones and subzones is proposed for western North America. These include the Proconodontus tenuiserratus Zone, the P. posterocostatus Zone (new), the P. muelleri Zone (new), the Eoconodontus Zone (new, with Eoconodontus notchpeakensis and Cambrooistodus minutus Subzones), the Cordylodus proavus Zone (emended, with Hirsutodontus hirsutus, Fryxellodontus inornatus, and Clavohamulus elongatus Subzones), the Cordylodus intermedius Zone (new, with Hirsutodontus simplex and Clavohamulus hintzei Subzones), the Cordylodus lindstromi Zone (new), and Cordylodus angulatus Zone (new).

The boundary point for the base of the Ordovician System will be chosen so as to coincide with a correlatable conodont zonal boundary; other fossil groups will support correlation of this boundary point. Three alternative horizons are being considered. The base of the Cordylodus proavus Zone is the most distinctive but is regarded by some as older than is appropriate for the base of the Ordovician. The base of the Cordylodus intermedius Zone is recognizable by faunal changes in several evolutionary lineages at a level that is slightly younger than the presently recognized boundary in Australia, North America, and parts of Asia but slightly older than the base of the Tremadoc Series of Europe. The base of the C. lindstromi Zone can be recognized in most areas by the lowest occurrence of the nominate species, which is of questioned taxonomic validity and uncertain biostratigraphic utility; this horizon is closest to the base of the Tremadoc Series of Europe.

Choice of a stratotype section has been narrowed to the Cow Head Group in Newfoundland, eastern Canada; and to the Fengshan and Yehli formations in Jilin Province, northeastern China. The Cow Head Group was deposited on and near the base of the continental slope. Erosion by debrisslide breccias resulted in a significant hiatus near the boundary interval in the Broom Point sections, a condition contrary to guidelines for choice of boundary sections. This may be less of a problem in other sections, such as Green Point. The Dayangcha section in China was deposited on the outer part of a continental shelf and has acritarchs, conodonts, graptolites and trilobites. Additional study of the China section is needed to document fully the ranges of critical conodont taxa.

The Ahnet and Mouydir regions of southern Algeria are part of one of the world's largest, almost undeformed exposures of Palaeozoic rocks which exemplify a hitherto poorly known early Variscan development of a Devonian basin and ridge system. This area includes a series of intracratonic basins along the northern margin of the West African Craton which consists (from W to E) of the Reggane Basin, Azel Matti Ridge, Ahnet Basin, Foum Belrem Ridge and Mouydir Basin. The depositional and palaeogeographic interpretation is based on 71 sections in this region, which for the first time were biostratigraphically calibrated by means of conodonts, goniatites and brachiopods. The structural evolution during Devonian times was probably controlled by reactivation of ancient N–S- to NW–SE-running faults in the Precambrian basement, which caused differential subsidence and uplift of a previously largely unstructured siliciclastic shelf. A hiatus during Emsian times indicates widespread emergence during this interval. The entire area was flooded during the earliest Eifelian, when the first vestiges of the Azel Matti Ridge become evident by stratigraphic condensation. The palaeogeographic differentiation is most apparent during the Givetian, when a shoal with reduced carbonate sedimentation was established on the Azel Matti Ridge passing towards the west and east into basinal environments of the Reggane and Ahnet basins, respectively. The Foum Belrem Ridge is distinguished by increased subsidence during the early Givetian and by revived uplift during the late Givetian. In the Mouydir Basin further east, up to 1000 m of shales were deposited during the Givetian. The early Frasnian is marked by the ubiquitous sedimentation of black shales and bituminous styliolinites. These lithologies occur repeatedly already during the Middle Devonian and document intermittent anoxic conditions. The basin and ridge topography is levelled by the shallowing-up sequence of up to 1400 m thick upper Frasnian and Famennian shales which grade into a deltaic sequence of uppermost Famennian/Tournaisian sandstones. The up to now only vaguely discriminated lithostratigraphic formations of the Devonian have been biostratigraphically defined in suitable type sections.
