Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease of multifactorial etiology. Its association with psychiatric disorders has frequently been reported, mainly with depressive or anxiety disorders.However, its association with schizophrenia remains exceptional.

In this regard, we report the case of a young patient, aged 24, diagnosed 5 years ago with Crohn’s disease, evolving by remission flares, currently treated with Azathioprine, after failure of corticosteroid bolus.

The patient was admitted to psychiatry for aggression towards his parents.In view of the history of the disorders as reported by the family and the psychiatric interview, the diagnosis of schizophrenia was retained and the patient was put on amisulpride.

Schizophrenia and Crohn’s disease are relatively frequent diseases, generally occurring at a young age, whose etiopathogenesis, multifactorial, involves in both cases genetic, environmental and immunological factors.Their association does not seem fortuitous and arouses both etiopathogenic and therapeutic interest, but studies involving a large number of patients would make it possible to elucidate the link between these two diseases.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is a major public health problem in Morocco. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a four-drug combination therapy for two months (isoniazid (INH), rifampicin, pyrazinamide and ethambutol), followed by two drugs (INH and rifampicin) for 4 months, as first-line treatment for newly diagnosed pulmonary TB in children and adults. This regimen is generally considered effective, safe, and cost-effective. However, adverse effects and drug interactions often complicate the treatment of TB. Isoniazid is associated with 32% of adverse events, of which 1.9% are psychiatric.

The patient and guardians were interviewed to obtain information after their consent. Data from the patient profile forms and laboratory test reports were evaluated. Causality assessment was done by the WHO scale and the Naranjo scale. Oral informed consent was obtained from the patient and parents.

We report a case of acute psychosis in a child with a temporal sequence strongly in favor of INH-induced psychosis. Treatment with risperidone at an appropriate dose improved the symptomatology while waiting for the end of the antituberculosis protocol. As soon as the isoniazid was stopped, there was a clear return to the child’s premorbid state.

In Greece, the Athens Multifamily Group Therapy Project (A- MFGT) provides systemic multifamily therapy to young adults after the first psychotic episode, with a purpose to deliver an early intervention program.

Few evidence is available regarding the viability of multifamily systemic therapy in an online setting in purpose of widely developing in e-mental health care (Borcsa et al., 2021). The members of ten families who participated at two online multifamily systemic groups for young adults after the onset of psychosis provided their opinions regarding their experience of 10-month therapeutic program through online platform, with two - hour sessions every 15 days.

The members of the group described in an online form what they found helpful and/or unhelpful/harmful at three separate times: in the middle of the therapy process, at the end of therapy and at 6 months follow up period. The data collected was analyzed with an inductive, “data – driven”, form of coding based on the methodology of thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Themes represent the prevalence of what the participants found important in relation to the perceived effectiveness of online A- MFGT.

The members highlighted the impact of the online group process on family communication, reflected on advantages and difficulties offered by the online setting, described their emotions and the effect of diagnosis and hospitalization at individual and family level, valued the problem solving and empathy techniques in the group and identified the obstacles they encountered in the group sessions.

Psychosis can affect all aspects of a person’s life, and without support and appropriate care, it can place considerable weight on the patient’s relatives, as well as the community in general. Our suggestion is that MFGT can be a viable way to support the whole system facing psychosis, with the aim of preventing relapse and implementing quality of life of all the participants.

Although cognitive impairment is a core symptom of schizophrenia related to poore outcome in different functional domains, it still remains a major therapeutic challenge. To date, no comprehensive treatment guidelines for cognitive impairment in schizophrenia are implemented.

The aim of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) guidance paper was to provide a comprehensive meta-review of the current available evidence-based treatments for cognitive impairment in schizophrenia, structured into three sections: pharmacological treatment, psychosocial interventions, and somatic treatments.

Based on the reviewed evidence, the EPA guidance recommends an appropriate pharmacological management as a fundamental starting point in the treatment of cognitive symptoms in schizophrenia. Among psychosocial interventions, cognitive remediation and physical exercise are recommended for the treatment of cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. As for cognitive remediation, some variables have been confirmed as core elements for treatment effectiveness.

The dissemination of the EPA guidance paper may promote the development of shared guidelines concerning the treatment of cognitive functions in schizophrenia, with the purpose to improve the quality of care and to achieve clinical recovery in this population.

Stress is inextricably linked to mental well-being while stressful events remain a major contributor to many common psychosomatic disorders. Traumatic events are universal stressors. Only some individuals participating in stressful events do not develop full-blown post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but many of them manifest psychosomatic symptoms with a strong psychological component

The current study compared the severity of somatization, anxiety, depression, and distress in medical university students who were exposed and in those who were not exposed to a traumatic event.

Data were collected from 594 students of different faculties of the Poznan University of Medical Sciences in Poland. Participants were asked whether or not they had experienced any psychological trauma events and were asked to rate the intensity of psychosomatic symptoms they manifested. The data was collected using the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS) questionnaire and The Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4 DSQ).

The study found that 78% of study participants experienced a traumatic event while 15% of them reported moderate and severe PTSD symptoms. 45% subjects reported moderate or high stress levels, 23% subjects reported symptoms of depression while 30% reported symptoms of anxiety. The analysis also demonstrated 26% of students participating in the study reported somatic symptoms.

In the subgroup of study participants with trauma history trauma sufferers, 36% subjects declared they experienced a one-time event, 23% subjects experienced trauma event twice while others experienced trauma ≥three times. The number of traumatic events was positively associated with the number of PTSD symptoms and severity of psychosomatic manifestations such as stress, depression, anxiety and somatization. In addition, the study analyzed whether traumatic events resulted from conscious and intentional harm by others. In this respect, 16% of subjects declared they participated in an event that was consciously and intentionally caused by others (e.g., battering or abuse). Students who experienced traumatic events related to intentionally harming another person were characterized by a greater severity of depression.

Study indicates that experiencing traumatic events is associated with a greater severity of a range of psychosomatic symptoms.

One of the great challenges still to be achieved in schizophrenia is the development of a staging model that reflects the progression of the disorder. The previous models suggested have been developed from a theoretical point of view and do not include objective variables such as biomarkers, physical comorbidities, or self-reported subjective variables (Martinez-Cao et al. Transl Psychiatry 2022; 12(1) 1-11).

Develop a multidimensional staging model for schizophrenia based on empirical data.

Naturalistic, cross-sectional study. Sample: 212 stable patients with Schizophrenia (F20). Assessments: ad hoc questionnaire (demographic and clinical information); psychopathology: PANSS, CDS, OSQ, CGI-S; functioning: PSP; cognition: MATRICS; laboratory tests: C-Reactive Protein (CRP), IL-1RA, IL-6, Platelets/Lymphocytes (PLR), Neutrophils/Lymphocytes (NLR), and Monocytes/Lymphocytes (MLR) ratios. Statistical analysis: Variables selection was performed with an ad hoc algorithm developed for this research. The referred algorithm makes use of genetic algorithms (GA) to select those variables that show the best performance for the patients classification according to their global CGI-S. The objective function of the GA maximizes the individuals correct classification of a support vector machines (SVM) model that employs as input variables those given by the GA (Díez-Díaz et al. Mathematics 2021; 9(6) 654). Models performance was assessed with the help of 3-fold cross-validation and these process was repeated 10,000 times for each one of the models assessed.

Mean age(SD): 39.5(13.54); men: 63.5%; secondary education: 59.50%. Most patients in our sample had never been married (74.10%), and more than a third received disability benefits due to schizophrenia (37.70%). The mean length of the disease was 11.98(12.02) years. The best SVM model included the following variables: 1)Clinical: number of hospitalizations, positive, negative, depressive symptoms and general psychopathology; 2)Cognition: speed of processing, visual learning and social cognition; 3)Functioning: PSP total score; 4)Biomarkers: PLR, NLR and MLR. This model was executed again 100,000 times applying again 3-fold cross-validation. In 95% of the algorithm executions more than a 53.52% of the patients were classfied in the right CGI-S category. On average the right classification was of 61.93%. About specificity and sensitivity the average values obtained were of 0.85 and 0.64 respectively.

Our staging model is a robust method that appropriately distributes patients according to the severity of the disorder. Highlights the importance of clinical, functional and cognitive factors to classify patients. Finally, the inflammatory parameters PLR, NLR and MLR have also emerged as potential biomarkers for staging schizophrenia.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on educational systems and the well-being of the university staff. The mental health of university staff can affect their ability to work.

Our study aimed to assess the association between the well-being of university staff and their workability during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We conducted a cross-sectional study among university staff in Sfax, Tunisia. We collected data between September and October 2021 using a self-administered questionnaire including socio-professional characteristics, the Work Ability Score (WAS) and the Arabic version of the Mental Health Continuum-Short form.

Our sample was composed of 62 university staff. The respondents’ mean age was 51.4±6.7 years and 67.7% were female. The average job tenure was 17.9 ± 8 years. The mean score of WAS was 7.5±1.8. The mean scores of emotional well-being, social well-being and psychological well-being were 8.5±4.2, 12.6±6.1, and 19.9±7.3, respectively. Sixty-one per cent of participants reported languishing to moderate mental health, and 39% % were flourishing. The workability of participants was significantly associated with their well-being (p = 0.04).

Having good mental health improves the worker’s ability to work. Taking care of mental health is crucial to guarantee better efficacy at work.

The personality construct of psychopathy consists of severe deficits in behavior, emotion and cognition, often categorized in the two dimensions affective-interpersonal and antisocial-lifestyle. Research indicates that a lack of anxiety and fear play an important role in psychopathic personalities. Understanding the interplay of psychopathic traits, fear and threat processing and reactive behavior is important due to its implications for risky and potentially antisocial behavior.

We conducted a mixed reality study using the elevated plus-maze in a non-clinical sample to test anxiety-related behavior in correlation to psychopathic personality traits. Our hypothesis was that higher psychopathy would lead to higher expression of risky behavior and, thus, to longer time on open arms, higher number of entries to open arms and reduced latency for a first visit on open arms and for open arm endexploration.

Healthy volunteers were recruited (N=170) and completed the Sensation Seeking Scale V (SSSV), the Acrophobia Questionnaire (AQ), and the Brief Questionnaire of Psychopathic Personality Traits. The included subjects were tested on the human elevated plus-maze, which consists of a physical life-sized wooden platform and its representation in a virtual environment. Data recording was performed via the virtual reality tracking system (HTC Vive Base Station®, Seattle, USA) and custom soft-ware (A+ cross®) using the following parameters: total time spent on open arms (time on open arms), number of entries to open arms, latency for the first entry of an open arm (latency 1st visit) and time until subjects reach the end of an open arm (latency endexploration).

Statistical analyses were carried out using IBM SPSS Statistics 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) and R software (R version 4.0.2). Pearson correlation was performed to assess associations between psychopathic traits and measures of anxiety-related constructs.

Reduced levels of anxiety were associated with higher psychopathic traits. This was reflected in a correlation between the PPT sum score and all measures of anxiety-like behavior on the EPM (time on open arms: R = .29, p < 0.001; number of entries to open arms: R = .32, p < 0.001; latency 1st visit: R = -.29, p < 0.001; latency endexploration: R = -.30, p < 0.001). Psychopathic traits were also negatively correlated with subjective levels of anxiety on the EPM (R = -.23, p = 0.004). Sensation seeking (SSSV) (R =.33, p < 0.001) but not general levels of acrophobia (ACQ) (R = -.13, p = 0.11) were moreover associated with psychopathic personality traits.

In light of the ongoing discussion, our results demonstrate a correlation between psychopathic personality traits and anxiety-related behavior in a non-clinical sample. This supports the theory of a lack of fear in psychopathy and may influence risky and potentially harmful behavior in this population.

Sociopetal design methods can offer interesting means to support therapeutic concepts within ward environments. They can help to forge group identities through offering patients, staff and visitors opportunities to identify with the spaces they inhabit. “Sociopetal space” has been defined as “spaces which help bring people together"; but how does this actually work and what role can these types of spaces play in a hospital ward setting?

Some of these elements operate at a detail level and can be rather simple to deploy. Normalising the environment by making “regular” design decisions such as by using real rather then simulated materials (ie., actual wood rather then “wood patterned” furniture); or through offering a mix of lighting (ie., artificial and natural sources in variation) can create more homely spaces for patients and staff alike. Ultimately, design decisions at the detail scale can create phenomenal elements which can play a large role towards generating a favorable atmospheric experience on the ward.

It is also possible to explore how specific moments or places within a psychiatric ward might be designed to support patient agency, even on a closed ward. Sociopetal elements such as well-sited sitting spaces can offer moments of safety or retreat, leading to a greater sense of control. This can help patients feel more open to positive interactions with their colleagues and staff because they can safely observe or choose less committed ways of participation in daily or group activities.

Zooming out from these details, we will also look at the layout of a psychiatric ward (ie. accommodations) to help identify where opportunities such as those listed can be found. Simple gestures such as a slight widening of the corridor leading to important shared areas or better access to light or views of nature have been shown to improve outcomes for patients. What other design elements can be placed on or within wards to further this approach? Recent and ongoing projects within our practice will be shared to help workshop participants gather literacy in case they may be involved in future design projects.

Migration is a rapidly growing phenomenon in European countries and its association with psychotic disorders is a public health concern. Psychosis is more prevalent among migrants, which suggests that adverse social experiences play an important role in its pathogenesis. Throughout the migration process, migrants are exposed to several social disadvantages, including in the post-immigration context, where perceived discrimination appears to be an important stressor. In fact, the highest incidence rates of psychosis occur in the most discriminated populations, namely migrants with darker skin complexion, particularly when living in low-ethnic-density neighborhoods, where both discrimination and social isolation are more prominent.

To conduct an updated review about the association between migration, perceived discrimination and psychosis, aiming to better understand the mechanisms involved.

Narrative literature review using the keywords “migration”; “psychosis”; “discrimination”; “racism” on PubMed database, in conjunction with presentation of a clinical case concerning a patient from Guinea-Bissau, admitted to our hospital in the context of first-episode psychosis (FEP), with onset months after completing the Mediterranean migration route to Europe.

Literature suggests that experiences of racism and social exclusion contribute to feelings of imminent danger, fear and general anxiety, which may develop into paranoid ideas of ubiquitous persecution. Furthermore, intense social defeat experiences, common in migrants, are associated with more distressing forms of delusional content, with delusions of psychological persecution being more common. However, there is also evidence that migrants with FEP have better occupational and social functioning profiles compared to natives, suggesting that, in these patients, there is a higher burden of social-environmental risk factors, with the onset of psychosis occurring only when this burden overcomes a higher threshold. Our patient fits this description. After completing his migratory route and while living in an Italian refugee camp, he described suffering experiences of severe discrimination. Real or not, these experiences escalated to become delusional ideas of persecution involving European governments, thought to seek for his humiliation. Despite the presence of psychotic symptoms, this patient was able to maintain a reasonable level of functioning during years, up to his psychiatric admission.

Given the notorious effect of perceived discrimination and racism on the increased risk of psychosis in immigrants, it is urgent to adopt policies that promote the social protection of these vulnerable groups, namely through enhancing their integration in the host countries.

Contemporary evidence has established that stunted vitamin D levels are associated with depression, poor mood and other mental disorders.Vitamin D supplementation might play a significant role in depression.

To assess the role of supplementation of Vitamin D on depression scores among rural adolescents

It is a Cluster Randomized Control Trial carried out for a period of two years. 10 Government rural schools were taken as clusters and sample size was calculated using previous literature.(Libuda.et al:EJN. 2020; 27:1-0) 150 was the final sample size in each group. Adolescents aged 11-18 years were included and with any pre-existing mental health illness, renal abnormalities and confirmed neurological disorders (Epilepsy) were excluded. Intervention group received 2 months of 2000 IU per day for 9 weeks and Control arm received 500 mg of Calcium and low dose (250 IU) of Vitamin D. To assess socio-demographic status a pretested semi structured questionnaire was used. To assess depression, Becks Depression Inventory (BDI-II) was used. Venous Blood was taken by experienced lab technician and analyzed in Central Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Biochemistry Department, SDUMC, SDUAHER, Kolar, Karnataka, India. Study was started after Central ethics Committee approval. This study is intramural funded project (Rs.6,12,000/). Clinical Trials Registry number: CTRI/2021/07/034654: REF/2021/03/042355. All the data collected entered in Microsoft excel and analysed using SPSS v 22(IBM corp,USA). Pre-intervention and post intervention difference assessed with t-test summarized as Mean and Standard deviation (SD) with statistically significant difference defined with p value less than 0.05. Both Intention-To-Treat analysis and Per Protocol analysis done and reported separately.

Comparing Becks Depression scores before and after intervention, Vitamin D arm showed statistically significant reduction in Becks Depression scores. Intention to treat analysis showed that Vitamin D arm had statistically significant reduction in Becks Depression scores.

Vitamin D supplementation had reduced Depression scores among rural adolescents significantly. Vitamin D toxicity was not noted inspite of High dose of Vitamin D supplementation

The use of hallucinogens has accompanied the human being throughout history. In the 1970s, studies focused on the therapeutic potential of hallucinogens were blocked due to their misuse in the young population. At present, psilocybin is re-emerging as the center of attention due to its possible therapeutic potential in different psychiatric pathologies such as depression, anxiety or substance use.

The main objective of this work has been to review recent studies on the therapeutic potential of psilocybin in drug-resistant depressive disorder.

For the search for articles, the search strategy “psilocybin AND depression” was established in PUBMED. Regarding the inclusion criteria, it was established that they were recent articles, in Spanish or English and that the full text was freely accessible. On the other hand, those articles whose studies did not focus on humans and resistant depressive disorder were excluded. A total of 19 articles were obtained to review.

Focusing on Drug-Resistant Depressive Disorder, multiple studies have agreed that the administration of one or two microdoses (10-25mg) of psilocybin accompanied by psychotherapy improves the clinical picture for at least 6 months. These results make us feel optimistic in the search for new treatments in the field of mental health.

Psilocybin microdoses associated with psychotherapy improves depressive symptoms in a patient resistant to common antidepressants.

The psilocybin response in terms of improvement of the depressive symptoms persists after 6 months of evolution.

One or, in some two cases, two microdoses of psilocybin (10-25mg) are enough to obtain statistically significant results in the improvement of the depressive symptoms.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented detrimental impact on mental health in people around the world. It is therefore important to examine factors that may buffer or heighten the risk of mental health problems in this context.

The current study explores the buffering effects of different flows of compassion (for self, for others, from others) and the magnifying effects of fears of compassion on the impact of perceived threat of COVID-19 on indicators of mental health and psychosocial wellbeing.

4057 adult participants collected from the general community population across 21 countries from Europe, Middle East, North America, South America, Asia and Oceania, completed self-report measures of perceived threat of COVID-19, compassion, fears of compassion, social safeness, loneliness, depression, anxiety, stress, posttraumatic stress and growth.

Self-compassion moderated the impact of perceived threat of COVID-19 on depression, anxiety and stress, whereas compassion from others moderated the effects of fears of COVID-19 on social safeness. Fears of compassion moderated the impact of perceived threat of COVID-19 on psychological distress. Only fears of compassion from others moderated the effects of fears of COVID-19 on social safeness. Furthermore, social connection (compassion and social safeness) predicted higher post-traumatic growth and traumatic stress, whereas social disconnection (fears of compassion and loneliness) predicted increased traumatic symptoms only. Social connection heightened the impact of perceived threat of COVID-19 on post-traumatic growth, while social disconnection weakened this impact. Social disconnection magnified the impact of the perceived threat of COVID-19 on traumatic stress. The effects were consistent across countries.

Our findings highlight the universal protective role of compassion and social connection in promoting resilience and buffering against the harmful effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. Furthermore, our results reveal that fears of compassion have a magnifying effect on the damaging impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health.

Since the declaration of the first Covid-19 case on December 08th ,2019, and to curb the spread of this pandemic, each country and notably Tunisia, has implemented a preventive strategy dominated by general lockdowns in accordance with social distancing and basic hygiene measures. These measures were not applicable in the health care sector as health care workers are at the forefront in the fight against COVID-19. This condition affects not only their physical health caused by elevated workload, but also their mental health causing anxiety, fear, and depression. Previous studies have reported that health care professionals feel stigmatized, experience high levels of anxiety and symptoms of depression, and have sleep problems. Impaired Quality of Sleep (QoS) can affect their efficiency in providing medical services and adequate psychological support for patients suffering from COVID-19.

To evaluate the QoS among health care professionals treating patients with COVID-19 and quantifying the symptoms of depression and levels of anxiety.

A cross-sectional study was conducted in 75 health care professionals matched by age and sex working in public hospital Taher Sfar Mahdia. The study was based in a self administred, French language questionnaire containing three validated questionnaires: 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) Scale, 9-items Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and additional survey constructed for the purpose of the study.

Healthcare professional treating COVID-19 patients (Group I) group was predominately females mean aged of 32.67±7.04. The health professionals treating COVID-19 patients had poorer Quality of Sleep; Pittsburgh score 10.6 ± 742 vs 7.89 ± 6.14 in the group not treating COVID-19 patients ( p=0.001). Levels of anxiety and depression were significantly higher in the group I (respectively p=0.005 and 0.03). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that higher scores on GAD (beta = .809, p < .01) and the lower one was the number of persons in charge (beta = –0.632; p < .01) were independent predictors of a poorer quality of sleep

This study has revealed the heavy mental health burden health care professionals treating infected patients in Tunisia during the COVID-19 pandemic are exposed to. Providing early psychological support and a psychologically safe environment for these healthcare workers may alleviate their stress and, consequently, ameliorate their QoS. More attention should be devoted to their quality of sleep and work schedules. In many countries, online training, telehealth supports, behavioral group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based therapy have been deployed for frontier Healthcare workers and have proven effective in such circumstances.

In the global practice and in Russia, alcohol abuse in the population remains one of the main risk factors for disability and premature death of the able-bodied population

Systemic neuropsychological study of impaired mental functions caused by the toxic effects of alcohol.

The study was in the substance use unit. Patients over the age of 24 years, with a period of abstinence from alcohol of at least 7 days before the study. The experimental group included 24 patients diagnosed with “Chronic alcoholism” stage II, (including 23 men and 1 woman). The age of patients was 47.1±4.5. The research method was standardized neuropsychological technique by A.R. Luria

In the study group, a direct relationship was found between disorders in the mental functions (frontal lobe of the brain) and the age of patients suffering from alcohol dependence (r = 0.477; p<0.05). This indicates premature cognitive aging, which manifested in a decrease in the processes of processing new information and working memory. Suicide is a complex problem in which individual, family social factors are interrelated. The 1997 Asian financial crisis caused a major economic crisis in Korea, and Korea received bailout support from the International Monetary Funds(IMF) from December 23, 1997 to August 23, 1997.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the suicide rate of children and adolescents who grew up during this economic crisis in Korea.

Suicide rates are calculated according to gender, region, and age of 5 years (10-14 years old, 15-19 years old, 20-24 years old) using suicide death data from the Korea National Statistical Office from 2000 to 2017. The cohort of interest in the study is the group that was in childhood and early adolescence between 1997-2000 and corresponds to 1986-1995 in terms of birth year. Cohorts are divided into 1986-1989 (G1), 1990-1992 (G2), and 1993-1995 (G3) according to birth year. These groups were 8-14 years old for G1 and 5-10 years old for G2, 2-7 years old for G3 during 1997-2000, during the economic crisis. The Age-Period-Cohort analysis and linear mixed-effects regression models are used and the moderating effect on region and age is also analyzed.

The 10-24 year-old suicide rate was higher in males than females, in older age groups, earlier in birth years in the birth cohort, and in rural than urban areas. Suicide rates between the ages of 20-24 years were particularly high among men living in rural areas. During the national economic crisis, the suicide rate was higher among adolescents than preschoolers (G3 < G1) (p<0.001), and this trend was observed for both men and women. However, the main effect of the cohort was not observed at a statistically significant level.

The national economic crisis has a negative impact on the mental health of children and adolescents, and it is more negative for adolescents than for children, which can increase the suicide rate between the ages of 20-24.

Early neurodevelopmental deviations, such as abnormal cortical folding patterns, are a candidate biomarker for major depressive disorder (MDD). Previous studies on patterns of abnormal cortical gyrification in MDD have provided valuable insights; however, the findings on cortical folding are controversial.

We aimed to investigate the association of MDD with the local gyrification index (LGI) in each cortical region at the whole-brain level and the association of the LGI with clinical characteristics of MDD, including recurrence, remission status, illness duration, severity of depression, and medication status of patients with MDD.

We obtained T1-weighted images of 234 patients with MDD and 215 healthy controls (HCs). LGI values were automatically calculated using the FreeSurfer software according to the Desikan–Killiany atlas. LGI values from 66 cortical regions in the bilateral hemispheres were analyzed. We compared the LGI values between the MDD and HC groups using the analysis of covariance, including patients’ age, sex, and years of education as covariates. The association between clinical characteristics and LGI values was investigated in the MDD group.

Compared with HCs, patients with MDD showed significantly decreased LGI values in the cortical regions, including the bilateral ventrolateral and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices, medial and lateral orbitofrontal cortices, insula, right rostral anterior cingulate cortex, and several temporal and parietal regions, with the highest effect size in the left pars triangularis (Cohen’s f = 0.361; P = 1.78 × 10-13). As for the association of clinical characteristics with LGIs within the MDD group, recurrence and longer illness duration of MDD were associated with increased gyrification in several occipital and temporal regions, which showed no significant difference in LGIs between MDD and HC groups.

Considering that the aforementioned cortical regions are involved in emotion regulation, abnormal cortical folding patterns in such regions may be associated with the dysfunction of emotion regulation-related neural circuits, which may lead to MDD. These findings suggest that LGI may be a relatively stable neuroimaging marker associated with the trait of MDD predisposition.

Depression is a common pathology in the elderly, often unrecognized and mostly affiliated to the consequences of aging,especially in front-line services. It induces somatic and functional impact and even a suicidal risk.

When unrecognized or neglected, depression can reduce life expectancy and increases the use of healthcare and the institutionalization.

-Determine the point-prevalence of depression in the elderly in a front-line heath service in Tunis.

A descriptive and evaluative cross-sectional study on a sample of patients aged 65 or more, in a tunisian front-line service of general health care regardless of the medical reason.

Sociodemographic and clinical forms along with the PHQ-9 scale (Patient health questionnaire-9)

Thirty patients have participated in our study (21 men and 9 women). The average age was 73.23 years. Chronic pathologies were found in 96.66% of cases.

The found risk factors are: female sex in 70% of cases, loneliness and isolation in 10% of cases, widowhood in 50% of cases, grieving in 6.6% of cases and somatic comorbidity in 96 .66% of cases.

The overall prevalence of depressive symptoms was 53.33%. This is correlated with advanced age and female sex (57.14% in women vs 33.33% in men).

The depressive symptomatology found, was mild in 18.5% of cases, average in 62.5% of cases and moderately severe in 18.5% of cases.

Depression is a frequent pathology in the elderly with multiple risk factors. The aging of the Tunisian population on one hand and the change of the social model (family nucleus) on the other, encourage the early detection of depression in the elderly and the training of the health professionals in order to limit its prevalence.

Sleep related sexual behaviors or sexsomnias are unconscious behavioral activities that occur during sleep (e.g. parasomnias). Behaviors could range from sexual vocalizations, orgasms, sexualized movements, masturbation, or full sexual intercourse with a subsequent amnesia. Early epidemiological studies showed a prevalence of 7.1%, with a male predominance. While intended as a rare condition, leads to important physical and psychological consequences for both the patient and their bed partner. For our knowledge this is the first case of sexsomnia reported in Portugal.

To report the clinical and psychosocial impact of a Sexsomnia case in a young woman which was misdiagnosed with depression.

Patient´s clinical files consultation and literature review using Pubmedâ and the keywords: sexsomnia.

A 18-year-old female referred to a psychiatric consultation to be assessed and treated from a diagnostic of depressive disorder. This was a young woman with a previous history of sleepwalking during childhood, with no recurrent episodes since adolescence. A familiar positive history for sleepwalking was confirmed (mother). She reported the beginning of her sleep related sexual behavior six months before the consultation, conflicting with the moment in which she started pharmacological therapy for Chron Disease, diagnosed at that time.

After she slept with her boyfriend, she was told by him about the recurrence of masturbatory activity during sleep. These episodes were told to occur as often as 1 to 2 times a night, shortly after falling asleep, with posterior amnesia for the event.

As for medical or psychiatric history, only Chron’s disease is highlighted, being under control with azathioprine. Likewise, he took 1mg of melatonin/night.

Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index at presentation was 7/21 and the STOP-Bang questionnaire revealed a low risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

A Type I Polysomnographic study was performed revealing decreased sleep efficiency and fragmented sleep presenting an alternating cyclic pattern. The existence of significant respiratory events during sleep, as well as periodic movements, was excluded.

Cognitive behavioral therapy by means of highlighting the need of improvement on sleep hygiene measures was prescribed and the dose of melatonin was increased up to 3mg. Despite the good clinical response, the patient discontinued the melatonin treatment mainly due to familiar and personal reasons and failed to comply with the prescribed hygienic measures, with a further worsening of the clinical condition.

This particularly challenging case representing the emerging medicolegal issues and psychosocial aspects related with the still poorly understood sleep disorders like sexomnia, shows up how much awareness is required from psychiatric team members to better assist and refer patients, promoting both an assertive diagnostic and an effective management.

Eating disorders (ED) historically been adressed as illnesses that only affect young adolescent females. ED’s in males have been documented in literature as early as the 1960’s; yet men continue to be under represented on research on the topic. For decades, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) perpetuated the invisibility of males by including amenorrhea as a diagnostic criterion. It was not until 2013 that male inclusion was endorsed thorught the removal of that criterion. It is estimated that one in four people affected with and ED is male.

It is estimated that one in four people affected with and ED is male. The proportion of males reporting lifetime prevalence of Binge eating disorder (BED) was far greater than for Anorexia nervosa (AN) or Bulimia nervosa (BN); the female versus male ratio of BED prevalence was 3:1. AN is the most life-threatening ED, but is least frequently seen in male populations; researchers suggest this is because most men are not interested in the emaciated, thin look.

This poster aims to recognize the presence of ED’s in males and raise awareness on this topic.

Case report and literature review

We present the case of a 50-year-old man with long-standing AN, who had never undergone mental health follow-up. He is referred to psychiatrist by his primary care provider (PCP) due to depressive symptoms. His medical history included vitamine D insufficiency and osteoporosis. At the age of 19 he was obese (BMI 35) and from the age of 23 he started to present dietary restriction after a social event. He had never self-induced vomiting, use of laxatives, binge eating or compulsive exercise. He reported no history or current substance use disorder. BMI at first consultation was 17,6 and showed fear of weight gain. Antidepressant therapy was started and patient was referred to a specialized therapist, nutritionistand nurse.

Overall, the findings demand clinicians develop awareness about ED in males to advance illness management and enhance long-term prognosis. In our case, the delay in receiving treatment has probably led to greater morbidity and chronicity. PCP’s play a key role in detection of ED’s as the often act as a first point of contact for men accesing the health care system. While assesing and ED, the PCP should include general questions on eating habits in their intake interview. Once an a ED is suspected, the first few minutes of the encounter are crucial to gain trust and buy-in from the patient. Once buy-in from the patient is gained, a complete physical exam and diagnostic work-up is required. Priority referrals to the following professionals are critical: psychiatrist, therapist, dietician or nutritionist, and ED specialist if available.
