Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}\in (1,2)$ be a real number. For a function $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9}:\mathbb{N}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$, define $W_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9})$ to be the set of $x\in \mathbb{R}$ such that for infinitely many $n\in \mathbb{N},$ there exists a sequence $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{i})_{i=1}^{n}\in \{0,1\}^{n}$ satisfying $0\leq x-\sum _{i=1}^{n}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{i}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}^{i})\leq \unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9}(n)$. In Baker [Approximation properties of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$-expansions. Acta Arith. 168 (2015), 269–287], the author conjectured that for Lebesgue almost every $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}\in (1,2)$, the condition $\sum _{n=1}^{\infty }2^{n}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9}(n)=\infty$ implies that $W_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9})$ is of full Lebesgue measure within $[0,1/(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}-1)]$. In this paper we make a significant step towards proving this conjecture. We prove that given a sequence of positive real numbers $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{n})_{n=1}^{\infty }$ satisfying $\lim _{n\rightarrow \infty }\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{n}=\infty$, for Lebesgue almost every $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}\in (1.497,\ldots ,2)$, the set $W_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{n}\cdot 2^{-n})$ is of full Lebesgue measure within $[0,1/(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}-1)]$. We also study the case where $\sum _{n=1}^{\infty }2^{n}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9}(n)<\infty$ in which the set $W_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9})$ has Lebesgue measure zero. Applying the mass transference principle developed by Beresnevich and Velani in [A mass transference principle and the Duffin–Schaeffer conjecture for Hausdorff measures. Ann. of Math. (2) 164(3) (2006), 971–992], we obtain some results on the Hausdorff dimension and the Hausdorff measure of $W_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9})$.

We construct an infinite sequence of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms without fixed points and leaving invariant a sequence of orientable measured foliations on the same topological surface and the same stratum of the space of Abelian differentials. The existence of such a sequence shows that all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms fixing orientable measured foliations cannot be obtained by the Rauzy–Veech induction strategy.

In this paper we study some conjugacy invariants (moduli) for discrete two dimensional dynamical systems, with a homoclinic tangency. We show that the modulus obtained by Palis in the heteroclinic case also turns up in the case considered here. We also present two new conjugacy invariants.

In this paper we give a complete set of invariants (moduli) for mild and strong semilocal equivalence for certain two parameter families of diffeomorphisms on surfaces. These families exhibit a quasi-transversal saddle-connection between a saddle-node and a hyperbolic periodic point.

A $\lambda$-graph system is a labeled Bratteli diagram with shift transformation. It is a generalization of finite labeled graphs and presents a subshift. The present author has previously constructed a C*-algebra $\mathcal{ O}_{\mathfrak L}$ associated with a $\lambda$-graph system $\mathfrak L$ that is a generalization of the Cuntz–Krieger algebras. In this paper, we introduce an entropic quantity for the $\lambda$-graph system $\mathfrak L$, called the volume entropy for $\mathfrak L$ and written as $h_{\rm vol}(\mathfrak L)$. The volume entropy $h_{\rm vol}(\mathfrak L)$ is invariant under shift equivalence of $\lambda$-graph systems, and yields a new topological conjugacy invariant of subshifts. We prove that Voiculescu's non-commutative topological entropy for the canonical completely positive map of the C*-algebra $\mathcal{O}_{\mathfrak L}$ is the volume entropy $h_{\rm vol}(\mathfrak L)$.

In this paper we show how to apply classical probabilistic tools for partial sums $\sum _{j=0}^{n-1}\varphi \circ \tau ^j$ generated by a skew product $\tau $, built over a sufficiently well-mixing base map and a random expanding dynamical system. Under certain regularity assumptions on the observable $\varphi $, we obtain a central limit theorem (CLT) with rates, a functional CLT, an almost sure invariance principle (ASIP), a moderate-deviations principle, several exponential concentration inequalities and Rosenthal-type moment estimates for skew products with $\alpha $-, $\phi $- or $\psi $-mixing base maps and expanding-on-average random fiber maps. All of the results are new even in the uniformly expanding case. The main novelty here (in contrast to [2]) is that the random maps are not independent, they do not preserve the same measure and the observable $\varphi $ depends also on the base space. For stretched exponentially ${\alpha }$-mixing base maps our proofs are based on multiple correlation estimates, which make the classical method of cumulants applicable. For $\phi $- or $\psi $-mixing base maps, we obtain an ASIP and maximal and concentration inequalities by establishing an $L^\infty $ convergence of the iterates ${\mathcal K}^{\,n}$ of a certain transfer operator ${\mathcal K}$ with respect to a certain sub-${\sigma }$-algebra, which yields an appropriate (reverse) martingale-coboundary decomposition.

The Julia set of the exponential family $E_{\kappa }:z\mapsto \kappa e^z$ , $\kappa>0$ was shown to be the entire complex plane when $\kappa>1/e$ essentially by Misiurewicz. Later, Devaney and Krych showed that for $0<\kappa \leq 1/e$ the Julia set is an uncountable union of pairwise disjoint simple curves tending to infinity. Bergweiler generalized the result of Devaney and Krych for a three-dimensional analogue of the exponential map called the Zorich map. We show that the Julia set of certain Zorich maps with symmetry is the whole of $\mathbb {R}^3$ , generalizing Misiurewicz’s result. Moreover, we show that the periodic points of the Zorich map are dense in $\mathbb {R}^3$ and that its escaping set is connected, generalizing a result of Rempe. We also generalize a theorem of Ghys, Sullivan and Goldberg on the measurable dynamics of the exponential.

We consider the homology theory of étale groupoids introduced by Crainic and Moerdijk [A homology theory for étale groupoids. J. Reine Angew. Math. 521 (2000), 25–46], with particular interest to groupoids arising from topological dynamical systems. We prove a Künneth formula for products of groupoids and a Poincaré-duality type result for principal groupoids whose orbits are copies of an Euclidean space. We conclude with a few example computations for systems associated to nilpotent groups such as self-similar actions, and we generalize previous homological calculations by Burke and Putnam for systems which are analogues of solenoids arising from algebraic numbers. For the latter systems, we prove the HK conjecture, even when the resulting groupoid is not ample.

Let f be a C0 circle map of degree one with precisely one local minimum and one local maximum, and let [ρ−(f), ρ+(f)] be the interval of rotation numbers of f. We study the structure of the function ρ(λ) = ρ+(Rλ∘f), where Rλ is the rotation through the angle λ.

In this paper, directional sequence entropy and directional Kronecker algebra for $\mathbb {Z}^q$ -systems are introduced. The relation between sequence entropy and directional sequence entropy are established. Meanwhile, directional discrete spectrum systems and directional null systems are defined. It is shown that a $\mathbb {Z}^q$ -system has directional discrete spectrum if and only if it is directional null. Moreover, it turns out that a $\mathbb {Z}^q$ -system has directional discrete spectrum along q linearly independent directions if and only if it has discrete spectrum.

We consider a class of skew product maps of interval diffeomorphisms over the doubling map. The interval maps fix the end points of the interval. It is assumed that the system has zero fiber Lyapunov exponent at one endpoint and zero or positive fiber Lyapunov exponent at the other endpoint. We prove the appearance of on–off intermittency. This is done using the equivalent description of chaotic walks: random walks driven by the doubling map. The analysis further relies on approximating the chaotic walks by Markov random walks, that are constructed using Markov partitions for the doubling map.

For several types of stable flows φ and representations ρ of the fundamental group of the underlying manifold, R-torsion for ρ can be computed from the periodic orbits of φ. However, there are counterexamples and the purpose of this paper is to describe the role of heteroclinic orbits in such counterexamples.

We study the possible dynamical degrees of automorphisms of the affine space $\mathbb {A}^n$ . In dimension $n=3$ , we determine all dynamical degrees arising from the composition of an affine automorphism with a triangular one. This generalizes the easier case of shift-like automorphisms which can be studied in any dimension. We also prove that each weak Perron number is the dynamical degree of an affine-triangular automorphism of the affine space $\mathbb {A}^n$ for some n, and we give the best possible n for quadratic integers, which is either $3$ or $4$ .

We show that for a locally free $C^{\infty }$-action of a connected and simply connected nilpotent Lie group on a compact manifold, if every real-valued cocycle is cohomologous to a constant cocycle, then the action is parameter rigid. The converse is true if the action has a dense orbit. Using this, we construct parameter rigid actions of simply connected nilpotent Lie groups whose Lie algebras admit rational structures with graduations. This generalizes the results of dos Santos [Parameter rigid actions of the Heisenberg groups. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys.27(2007), 1719–1735] concerning the Heisenberg groups.

Chaotic and ergodic properties are discussed for various subclasses of cylindric billiards. A common feature of the studied systems is that they satisfy a natural necessary condition for ergodicity and hyperbolicity, the so-called transitivity condition. The relation of our discussion to former results on hard ball systems is twofold. On the one hand, by slight adaptation of the proofs we may discuss hyperbolic and ergodic properties of 3 or 4 particles with (possibly restricted) hard ball interactions in any dimensions. On the other hand, a key tool in our investigations is a kind of connected path formula for cylindric billiards, which together with the conservation of momenta gives back, when applied to the special case of hard ball systems, the classical connected path formula.

We provide an explicit $\mathcal {S}$-adic representation of rank-one subshifts with bounded spacers and call the subshifts obtained in this way ‘minimal Ferenczi subshifts’. We aim to show that this approach is very convenient to study the dynamical behavior of rank-one systems. For instance, we compute their topological rank, the strong and the weak orbit equivalence class. We observe that they have an induced system that is a Toeplitz subshift having discrete spectrum. We also characterize continuous and non-continuous eigenvalues of minimal Ferenczi subshifts.

To study the geometry of a Fibonacci map $f$ of even degree $\ell\geq 4$, Lyubich (Dynamics of quadratic polynomials, I–II. Acta Mathematica178 (1997), 185–297) defined a notion of generalized renormalization, so that $f$ is renormalizable infinitely many times. van Strien and Nowicki (Polynomial maps with a Julia set of positive Lebesgue measure: Fibonacci maps. Preprint, Institute for Mathematical Sciences, SUNY at Stony Brook, 1994) proved that the generalized renormalizations ${\cal R}^{\circ n}(f)$ converge to a cycle $\{f_1,f_2\}$ of order two depending only on $\ell$. We will explicitly relate $f_1$ and $f_2$ and show the convergence in shape of Fibonacci puzzle pieces to the Julia set of an appropriate polynomial-like map.

In this paper, we classify the three-dimensional partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms whose stable, unstable, and central distributions $E^s$ , $E^u$ , and $E^c$ are smooth, such that $E^s\oplus E^u$ is a contact distribution, and whose non-wandering set equals the whole manifold. We prove that up to a finite quotient or a finite power, they are smoothly conjugated either to a time-map of an algebraic contact-Anosov flow, or to an affine partially hyperbolic automorphism of a nil- ${\mathrm {Heis}}{(3)}$ -manifold. The rigid geometric structure induced by the invariant distributions plays a fundamental part in the proof.

We consider one-dimensional dynamical systems with indifferent fixed points (fixed points with derivative one). Many such maps have absolutely continuous ergodic infinite invariant measures. We study the limit of the ratio of the ergodic sum of fA to that of fB, where the integrals of fA and fB are infinite with respect to the absolutely continuous ergodic infinite invariant measure. If fA and fB are analytic functions on [0, 1], the result in this paper makes it clear whether the ratio of the ergodic sum of fA to that of fB converges in the Lebesgue measure or not.
