We prove the conjectural relations between Mahler measures and L-values of elliptic curves of conductors 20 and 24. We also present new hypergeometric expressions for L-values of elliptic curves of conductors 27 and 36. Furthermore, we prove a new functional equation for the Mahler measure of the polynomial family (1+X) (1+Y )(X+Y )−αXY, α∈ℝ.

We prove a global Torelli theorem for pairs $(Y,D)$ where $Y$ is a smooth projective rational surface and $D\in |-K_{Y}|$ is a cycle of rational curves, as conjectured by Friedman in 1984. In addition, we construct natural universal families for such pairs.

We show that recently constructed invariants of 3-dimensional manifolds and of hyperkähler manifolds (L. Rozansky and E. witten) come from characteristic classes of foliations and from Gelfand-fuks cohomology.

This paper determines the θ–correspondence for the dual pairs (O(p, q), Sp(2n, R)) when p+q=2n+1. As a consequence, there is a natural bijection between genuine irreducible representations of the metaplectic group Mp(2n, R) and irreducible representations of SO(p, q) with p+q=2n+1.

We construct regular integral canonical models for Shimura varieties attached to Spin and orthogonal groups at (possibly ramified) primes $p>2$ where the level is not divisible by $p$. We exhibit these models as schemes of ‘relative PEL type’ over integral canonical models of larger Spin Shimura varieties with good reduction at $p$. Work of Vasiu–Zink then shows that the classical Kuga–Satake construction extends over the integral models and that the integral models we construct are canonical in a very precise sense. Our results have applications to the Tate conjecture for K3 surfaces, as well as to Kudla’s program of relating intersection numbers of special cycles on orthogonal Shimura varieties to Fourier coefficients of modular forms.

A strategy is proposed for applying Chabauty's Theorem to hyperelliptic curves of genus ${>} 1$. In the genus 2 case, it shown how recent developments on the formal group of the Jacobian can be used to give a flexible and computationally viable method for applying this strategy. The details are described for a general curve of genus 2, and are then applied to find ${\bm C}({\bb Q})$ for a selection of curves. A fringe benefit is a more explicit proof of a result of Coleman.

We study Cox rings of K3 surfaces. A first result is that a K3 surface has a finitely generated Cox ring if and only if its effective cone is rational polyhedral. Moreover, we investigate degrees of generators and relations for Cox rings of K3 surfaces of Picard number two, and explicitly compute the Cox rings of generic K3 surfaces with a non-symplectic involution that have Picard number 2 to 5 or occur as double covers of del Pezzo surfaces.

We clarify the relationship between Grothendieck duality à la Neeman and the Wirthmüller isomorphism à la Fausk–Hu–May. We exhibit an interesting pattern of symmetry in the existence of adjoint functors between compactly generated tensor-triangulated categories, which leads to a surprising trichotomy: there exist either exactly three adjoints, exactly five, or infinitely many. We highlight the importance of so-called relative dualizing objects and explain how they give rise to dualities on canonical subcategories. This yields a duality theory rich enough to capture the main features of Grothendieck duality in algebraic geometry, of generalized Pontryagin–Matlis duality à la Dwyer–Greenless–Iyengar in the theory of ring spectra, and of Brown–Comenetz duality à la Neeman in stable homotopy theory.

Let $W$ be an extended affine Weyl group. We prove that the minimal length elements $w_{{\mathcal{O}}}$ of any conjugacy class ${\mathcal{O}}$ of $W$ satisfy some nice properties, generalizing results of Geck and Pfeiffer [On the irreducible characters of Hecke algebras, Adv. Math. 102 (1993), 79–94] on finite Weyl groups. We also study a special class of conjugacy classes, the straight conjugacy classes. These conjugacy classes are in a natural bijection with the Frobenius-twisted conjugacy classes of some $p$-adic group and satisfy additional interesting properties. Furthermore, we discuss some applications to the affine Hecke algebra $H$. We prove that $T_{w_{{\mathcal{O}}}}$, where ${\mathcal{O}}$ ranges over all the conjugacy classes of $W$, forms a basis of the cocenter $H/[H,H]$. We also introduce the class polynomials, which play a crucial role in the study of affine Deligne–Lusztig varieties He [Geometric and cohomological properties of affine Deligne–Lusztig varieties, Ann. of Math. (2) 179 (2014), 367–404].

We study the back stable Schubert calculus of the infinite flag variety. Our main results are:

• – a formula for back stable (double) Schubert classes expressing them in terms of a symmetric function part and a finite part;

• – a novel definition of double and triple Stanley symmetric functions;

• – a proof of the positivity of double Edelman–Greene coefficients generalizing the results of Edelman–Greene and Lascoux–Schützenberger;

• – the definition of a new class of bumpless pipedreams, giving new formulae for double Schubert polynomials, back stable double Schubert polynomials, and a new form of the Edelman–Greene insertion algorithm;

• – the construction of the Peterson subalgebra of the infinite nilHecke algebra, extending work of Peterson in the affine case;

• – equivariant Pieri rules for the homology of the infinite Grassmannian;

• – homology divided difference operators that create the equivariant homology Schubert classes of the infinite Grassmannian.

Let (C,G) be a smooth irreducible projective curve of genus g over an algebraically closed field k of chararacteristic p>0 and G be a finite group of automorphisms of C. It is well known that here, contrary to the characteristic 0 case, Hurwitz‘s bound |G|[les ] 84(g-1) doesn‘t hold in general; in such cases this gives an obstruction to obtaining a smooth galois lifting of (C,G) to characteristic 0. We shall give new obstructions of local nature to the lifting problem, even in the case where G is abelian. In the case where the inertia groups are p$^ae$-cyclic with a[les ] 2 and (e,p)=1, we shall prove that smooth galois liftings exist over W(k)[$^p^^2$√1].

We introduce a strategy based on Kustin–Miller unprojection that allows us to construct many hundreds of Gorenstein codimension 4 ideals with 9×16 resolutions (that is, nine equations and sixteen first syzygies). Our two basic games are called Tom and Jerry; the main application is the biregular construction of most of the anticanonically polarised Mori Fano 3-folds of Altınok’s thesis. There are 115 cases whose numerical data (in effect, the Hilbert series) allow a Type I projection. In every case, at least one Tom and one Jerry construction works, providing at least two deformation families of quasismooth Fano 3-folds having the same numerics but different topology.

We give a generalized and self-contained account of Haglund–Paulin’s wallspaces and Sageev’s construction of the CAT(0) cube complex dual to a wallspace. We examine criteria on a wallspace leading to finiteness properties of its dual cube complex. Our discussion is aimed at readers wishing to apply these methods to produce actions of groups on cube complexes and understand their nature. We develop the wallspace ideas in a level of generality that facilitates their application. Our main result describes the structure of dual cube complexes arising from relatively hyperbolic groups. Let $H_1,\ldots, H_s$ be relatively quasiconvex codimension-1 subgroups of a group $G$ that is hyperbolic relative to $P_1, \ldots, P_r$. We prove that $G$ acts relatively cocompactly on the associated dual CAT(0) cube complex $C$. This generalizes Sageev’s result that $C$ is cocompact when $G$ is hyperbolic. When $P_1,\ldots, P_r$ are abelian, we show that the dual CAT(0) cube complex $C$ has a $G$-cocompact CAT(0) truncation.

We study various measures of irrationality for hypersurfaces of large degree in projective space and other varieties. These include the least degree of a rational covering of projective space, and the minimal gonality of a covering family of curves. The theme is that positivity properties of canonical bundles lead to lower bounds on these invariants. In particular, we prove that if $X\subseteq \mathbf{P}^{n+1}$ is a very general smooth hypersurface of dimension $n$ and degree $d\geqslant 2n+1$, then any dominant rational mapping $f:X{\dashrightarrow}\mathbf{P}^{n}$ must have degree at least $d-1$. We also propose a number of open problems, and we show how our methods lead to simple new proofs of results of Ran and Beheshti–Eisenbud concerning varieties of multi-secant lines.

We associate to a test configuration for a polarized variety a filtration of the section ring of the line bundle. Using the recent work of Boucksom and Chen we get a concave function on the Okounkov body whose law with respect to Lebesgue measure determines the asymptotic distribution of the weights of the test configuration. We show that this is a generalization of a well-known result in toric geometry. As an application, we prove that the pushforward of the Lebesgue measure on the Okounkov body is equal to a Duistermaat–Heckman measure of a certain deformation of the manifold. Via the Duisteraat–Heckman formula, we get as a corollary that in the special case of an effective ℂ×-action on the manifold lifting to the line bundle, the pushforward of the Lebesgue measure on the Okounkov body is piecewise polynomial.

We prove a generalization of the author’s work to show that any subset of the primes which is ‘well distributed’ in arithmetic progressions contains many primes which are close together. Moreover, our bounds hold with some uniformity in the parameters. As applications, we show there are infinitely many intervals of length $(\log x)^{{\it\epsilon}}$ containing $\gg _{{\it\epsilon}}\log \log x$ primes, and show lower bounds of the correct order of magnitude for the number of strings of $m$ congruent primes with $p_{n+m}-p_{n}\leqslant {\it\epsilon}\log x$.

In Bull. Soc. Math. France 115 (1987), 399–456, Perrin-Riou formulates a form of the Iwasawa main conjecture which relates Heegner points to the Selmer group of an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, as one goes up the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a quadratic imaginary field K. Building on the earlier work of Bertolini on this conjecture, and making use of the recent work of Mazur and Rubin on Kolyvagin's theory of Euler systems, we prove one divisibility of Perrin-Riou's conjectured equality. As a consequence, one obtains an upper bound on the rank of the Mordell–Weil group E(K) in terms of Heegner points.

We show that some q-series such as universal mock theta functions are linear sums of theta quotients and mock Jacobi forms of weight 1/2, which become holomorphic parts of real analytic modular forms when they are restricted to torsion points and multiplied by suitable powers of q. We also prove that certain linear sums of q-series are weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight 1/2 due to annihilation of mock Jacobi forms or completion by mock Jacobi forms. As an application, we obtain a relation between the rank and crank of a partition.

We give a geometric description of the loci in the arc space defined by order of contact with a given subscheme, using the resolution of singularities. This induces an identification of the valuations defined by cylinders in the arc space with divisorial valuations. In particular, we recover the description of invariants coming from the resolution of singularities in terms of arcs and jets.

We study the action of a real reductive group G on a real submanifold X of a Kähler manifold Z. We suppose that the action of G extends holomorphically to an action of the complexified group and that with respect to a compatible maximal compact subgroup U of the action on Z is Hamiltonian. There is a corresponding gradient map where is a Cartan decomposition of . We obtain a Morse-like function on X. Associated with critical points of are various sets of semistable points which we study in great detail. In particular, we have G-stable submanifolds Sβ of X which are called pre-strata. In cases where is proper, the pre-strata form a decomposition of X and in cases where X is compact they are the strata of a Morse-type stratification of X. Our results are generalizations of results of Kirwan obtained in the case where and X=Z is compact.
